      @@KeyOfGeebz with some of Tool's songs it might be better to research it's meaning before listening... it will open up a whole new level of understanding. 46 & 2 is a prime example, whereas to the average listener they sound like cool lyrics but are in fact referencing work and theories by Carl Jung. That's not to say your own reaction isn't correct but Maynard's lyrics are often deep on many levels and even for me as a life-long fan - I now have different interpretations of the same song due to my own growth and understanding over time.

      @@hunterfitch5951 exactly. Another great example where a little research won't give anything away, but absolutely helps in fully graspjng the message(s), are the songs about how he dealt with the trauma of his mother's health.
      You're able to get much more depth to how he works through the stages of grief (along with other messages 😊), when listened to chronologically .

      Have you covered the archetypes yet? It helps to make so much more sense of this. It actually helps explain a lot of things including the idea of toxic masculinity. BTW, my definition of toxic masculinity is not that all masculinity is toxic. To my mind, masculinity/femninity exist on a continuum. Toxic masculinity would be at the extreme end and embody the primal idea of the masculine (the archetype). In other words, as Jung argued, we still carry that capacity with us (in the shadow). We have simply evolved mentally and control those primal urges. If we do not, we get toxic masculinity and other horrors. Jung was a genius!

    • @jacksmith4460
      @jacksmith4460 2 роки тому +2

      @@tpaulalex724 "toxic" anything , via Jungian thinking would be a repression of sub conscious aspects, which then through time have to express them selves through sub conscious behavior, The archetype idea (from my understanding) is more a collective mechanism, and is almost the vehicle for that subconscious expression. I would suggest your negative association with the primal aspect of man is not how Jung would see it. To view it in that sense would be a repression , the primal aspect (male or female) is in all of us. Denial of it creates internal fracturing, it has to be accepted and expressed, but in a positive manner, the toxic part is the denial and/or repression. It has to come out somehow, and if a constructive outlet is not found, it will come out as toxic

    I’m sure you know this Geebs, but the beauty in Tool is that Maynard is the “afterthought.”
    He doesn’t pen a single lyric until Adam, Danny, and Justin compose these tracks. What he’s singing is actually a physical response to how certain tracks make him feel.
    Which is why, like you pointed out, he has such perfect dissonance with a lot of this music. He’s not just adding a new layer of sound. He is becoming a new layer of sound within the composition.
    Hope to see more of these! Hope the shoulder is feeling better! Awwwright!

      @@mortmortmort8908 haha yep! I agree. Especially the early days. I mean, being a Tool fan myself since Aenima, one thing that’s always annoyed me was putting those guys on a pedestal so high that the fans start “schooling” other fans and claim their more connected than others

    • @neozakk_
      @neozakk_ 2 роки тому +3

      @@duggiedug9148 certainly wasn’t gatekeeping Tool here. Simply making a comment about a widely accepted truth in their music. Sorry if it came out crappy.
      BUT - This is almost unequivocally the reason why Fear Inoculum took so long to record. They admitted that they weren’t happy with any of the music and couldn’t send any of it to Maynard. Big reason for the APC and Puscifer tours/records and nothing on Tool’s end. Maynard writes plenty of music. He had no music to write to for Tool.

    • @MusicMissionary
      @MusicMissionary 2 роки тому +1

      @@duggiedug9148 do you ever think they kind of mock their own fans for putting them on a pedestal? Like the message is think for yourself yet a lot of fans seem like followers? I think of Maynard looking out at a sea of t shirts that say "tool" and thinking what a bunch of tools. The logo can look a little bit like "fool."It's like a meta layer of "think for yourself" saying "we're not gonna do that for you."

    • @neozakk_
      @neozakk_ 2 роки тому +4

      I have two things to add to this:
      1.) Most new Tool songs are debuted as instrumental interludes in their shows before they ever get released on albums. Why? Because there aren’t lyrics to those songs yet.
      2.) Maynard stands in the back stage area of Tool concerts for a very specific reason. He believes that he is the least impressive piece within the music (while that’s absolutely not true). He has no lights on him at any point during a performance (and don’t point me to that outdoor show from the 90s in broad daylight where they perform Sober - I’m referring to recent years) while every other band member has blinding white lights shining down on them.
      Again - I’m not gatekeeping here. I’m just shocked that my initial comment seems to have gotten such backlash. As again, I thought these were all widely accepted truths for years now.

There's so many songs I've listened to without fully knowing the lyrics and just think "yeah I dig this, my ears like this". I'm really glad that you're taking the time to read the lyrics for the Tool songs you are reviewing. It's part of taking in the whole experience. This song is especially significant to me along with several other ones and often times when I'm reading the lyrics for a Tool song it feels like maynard is writing and singing about something personal to me and my life. The content is so universal that it applies deeply even though he doesn't know or care who I am as an individual.

    I like the way you are putting your own take on the lyrics, rather than trying to reinterpret what the band were trying to say. Music is such a personal experience and we each interpret it in our own way, including the lyrics. That’s why good lyrics are often mysterious or ambiguous. For me, this song is about metamorphosis of the soul. Mahalo. Keep riding the wave.

    The feel you got from the lyrics match mine. The lyrics are quite positive.... "Now is my time" and the end "46 and 2...just ahead of me" seems like a person who's motivated and ready for what's ahead. Leave that old stuff and move on to a new way. That's the attitude and vibe I get from it.

    I love Tool, and I believe that the best is to first feel what the song open up for you in your life.
    After you should get the deep meaning that Maynard, who is just a genius, ment and let yourself be amazed for the second time.
    I'm listenging to some Tool song for 20 years now... and I still get something new every time.
    Everything in each tool songs is perfected to the last detail.. the sad part is that you don't have a new album every year.. the good part is that to fully absorbe a Tool album it might take you a lifetime.

    Bands like tool revolve around their lyrics tying into the music so much that it seems like its part of the percussion and literal feeling they are trying to portray to you. That's why it makes everyone think for themselves on what he is saying so you have multiple meanings for each person who listens to this type of music, it means whatever it is to "you" what it make "you" feel.

    You really killed it, Geebz. The song is about personal evolution and growth. Lines like "Soften this old armor" speak about becoming spiritually and emotionally more open and vulnerable, discarding the "armor" of selfishness, callousness and indifference that we so often find ourselves wearing in our youth to protect ourselves from emotional damage. In our youth, we feel like being emotional or even simply "feeling" is akin to weakness. So, in that respect, allowing yourself to express and feel openly without fear of reprisal is an evolution akin to growing an extra pair of chromosomes and becoming the next stage of human evolution, the 46 and 2.
    Awesome job.

    It’s so interesting to hear you talk about how you hear music. I’ve always heard the lyrics first, music with it, so there are lots of songs I don’t like, regardless of how great the music is because the lyrics say something I don’t like. I didn’t realise I heard music differently until a carol was playing and a girl asked, why is this a Christmas carol, it’s so morose. The lyrics were, I cry for baby jesus. She couldn’t hear the lyrics. I’ve learned so much about music, composition, production and on and on, because I watch your videos and my enjoyment of music has changed due to that, thank you.
