Adam: I've got all these riffs and other stuff I wanna play for you.
Danny: I've got all these fills and drum parts I wanna play for you.

Adam’s technique on this song is something that’s become a bit of a hallmark of the modern Tool sound. He’s not palm muting in the intro but playing straight 16th notes with his picking hand (DUDUDU) and doing a pull off with his left in between the first two strokes to create the articulation of the triplet. Stunningly precise especially live.

I never heard anything from that album before hand, but I bought it that day, too, purely based on Tool's reputation. But I did not have instant love. I remember as it was yesterday, hearing that album and being utterly disappointed and saying to myself I never need to listen to this album again. Can you believe it?? How wrong I was. 500-700 listens later it is probably the best example of a sleeper album for me, one that just kept getting better even after listening to it nearly everyday for the first year after it came out. And even after all that time I still hadn't settled on my favorite song, but by now I rank the Wings for Marie pair as my favorite work of art in any genre or media.

Danny Carey has an intuitive sense of percussion that I've never heard from another prog rock drummer. Guys like Neil Piert, Mike Portnoy, and Thomas Haake are incredibly technical in their playing, but Danny is super technical while having a sense of rhythm, groove, and sound that someone like John Bonham had. For that reason he is the single best percussionist/drummer that I've ever heard.

"Shine on upon the severed / Shine until the two become one / Divided I'm withering away / Divided I'm withering away / Shine on upon the many, light our way / Benevolent sun". I feel this verses sum up pretty well what Tool music has meant for me during all these years. Since I was a child, I've felt broken, severed, dysfunctional, incomplete. My family has a long history of mental health issues who weren't properly dealt with, I've been enduring some trauma related to my upbringing and I'm still struggling to this day to find a place where I feel safe and valued. Tool music helped me to survive, to watch inside my darkness and accept that some wounds will never heal completely but I still deserve to be happy. I'm still here, keep up this amazing work! 🖤PS. Sorry for my English, it's not my first language.

I always felt that the lyrical theme of this song was about us humans being severed from spirit and the need for the reconnection to god/nature. The two become one theme is littered throughout the album and artwork and is symbolic of transcending duality.

I feel that being broken isn’t something to be ashamed of. We are all in some way, and as long as we recognize it and deal with it, we can be alive and still thrive. I know that everyday is a struggle for me. I have some mental illness, but I have chosen to be medicated because that’s what feels best for me and my long term health, but even the meds have their own side effects and those aren’t great either. Tool has definitely been a go to outlet for many years and helped recognize that I am not alone and that we can all work through anything if we have the desire to.

He learned stuff from Meshuggah. I just can't remember the quote but I'm sure it was in an interview. And Meshuggah did open for Tool during the Lateralus tour. I love watching your videos. I can't tell ya how much it makes me happy to see you get sucked down the proverbial Tool/APC/Puscifer rabbit hole that many of us have found ourselves happily lost in for so many years. Hehe. In the early years of listening to Tool and APC, I remember thinking "damn these guys deserve so much more attention and credit for their incredible talents than what they recieve." That was before the internet really made its way into the majority of our homes and our lives. Nowadays we have a veritable cornucopia of videos, blogs, podcasts etc etc giving the bands and their individual members the acknowledgment that so very many of us feel they deserve. Anyone that MJK works with musically, seems to produce solid gold imho. And they never fail to surprise me! Just the other day I was listening to the new Puscifer album for the umpteenth time lol, and found myself shocked at the new bags of tricks Maynard was dipping into. On some tracks he sings in ways like I've never heard him sing before in all my years of listening to him sing . And that realization just blows me away. And hearing Maynard and Carina together is pure magic. I could probably create an entire side-category dedicated to just their ability to harmonize and play off each other's talents! I never get tired of it and probably never will! I could list quite a few songs that I'd love to hear your input on as well.

The song is in 9/8. You hit the nail right on the head. That's impressive as hell.
Also, you're 100% right about Danny. He could very easily force TOOL to be a drum-centric band. But he doesn't. He does an incredible amount of work to make the drum track complex but also subtle. It doesn't tread over the other instruments, when I think he very easily could make it if he wanted to. But he respects his band-mates and allows himself to exist in a space where he can be a part of a greater whole, rather than leader with people following him.

For a long time I thought he was just doing standard alternate picked triplets, but he's actually doing a pull-off on the first note into the open E and dragging his finger across the A and D strings to give it an extremely unique flavor.
