      Absolutely accurate comment. Was disappointed at first by this album, but after more listens it is fairly epic, and the songs take you on a great journey. I would still say that we didn't need the "filler" tracks in between the six or so actual tracks.

      I agree. Several of my friends who love Tool but don’t have a deeper understanding of music we slightly disappointed with FI when it first came out. I get pretty strongly that more people would appreciate it with time. Having an average track length over 10 minutes is a major obstacle for the typical music listener who has been conditioned their whole life that a five minute song is an epic ballad.

      @@AgentZ1011 absolutely agreed. I loved the album from the start but I feel as if just as a listener I’ve matured over the years. Same as I think the band has as artists collectively and individually. I grew up a hardcore kid and music just couldn’t be heavy enough or angry enough. Now I’ve mellowed out and love this album for exactly what it is. I have a lot of friends who love tool but were disappointed with the album and I think it’s because they just want another Undertow or Aenima record. They always reference seeing them back in the 90’s when Maynard was a madman and the band was just more wild. And as much as I love those days of Tool, I love these days. Their maturity in songwriting and overall technique/skill absolutely shines on FI. If this were to be their last album, I think it’s a great opus for them to retire on as a band, and especially for Adam.

    • @linkenski
      @linkenski 2 роки тому +3

      The real answer is that Maynard recorded in 2017 expecting the songs to be final, but then the other band members kept disagreeing about the arrangements and started changing. They had already moved pieces around a lot when Maynard did his "final" recordings, but this was it for him and this album, he considered his work "done" and he let the other 3 "duke it out" as he said. He expressed some irritation with how this album was done, because I think it simply got too long in the tooth for him. I'm sure he'll still be working on the next album but according to him the other band members have gained a bit too much of "this is good because of me" complex, so they keep shuffling things around trying to make it too perfect.

    The tonal movement of Adam's guitar work in this is like nothing else I've heard. The choices he makes in his "solos" here, especially the 2nd one are so unexpected and varied. One of the best minimalist guitarists. You highlight one of the key things about their compositions, the spacing and room. Less is more sometimes and this track is the evidence of it.

    • @InsaneCarville

      If you're referring to the solo the starts around the 15-16 minute mark in this video, that sound is the Plasma pedal by Game Changer. Saw footage of them using it while shaping the tone in the studio for the album with no indication of what song they were going to record. Once that moment happened in the song it was undeniably that pedal.

    This is the most underrated song on this album. My personal favorite on the album. Adam Jones has the skill to take over a song if he chose to. But he’s always been the type of guitarist that sacrifices his guitar skills for the sake of the band sounding great as a unit. Justin as well and Danny of course. That’s why unlike many other bands they have stayed together for as long as they have. Adam Jones and Tom Morello of RATM are insane guitarists and friends since back in the early 90s and they both sacrifice their skills for the better of the band. I have always said Adam Jones is severely underrated as a lead guitarist. Amazing guitar work on this song.

    A little secret for all the nerds out there, - Maynard sings "Call us all to arms and order!" and finishes right at the central second of the total track length... 6.49 (and a half) - out of 13.39... I know a lot of that can be fabricated with the soundscape wash before and after, but still very cool.

    This is my fav off of Fear Inoculum album. The flow and sound of the whole song paint a picture that is perfectly represented by the title. You feel like you are descending from beginning to end. The sound of water flowing and breaking, like chaos, rushing in to fill the void left by our demise. Even the main bass line is a descending pattern, if you noticed. And Adams part mirrors it in the sense that it is a descending pattern, overall. Adam is not a show off. He’s a “texture artist.” That’s what he does best. Even his riffs tend to have texture. They sort of set the scenery. He’s the Bob Ross of guitarists! You said it perfect when you mentioned about not adding too much. Just as much as is needed. What belongs. That’s what Adam does.

    I feel like I've been a tool fan my whole life. Found them pre teens and have been listening since, I'm 34. Descending might be my favorite song. They played it live for a few years before FI came out without any vocals and I would listen to just the instrumentals on UA-cam over and over again. Even better with lyrics though.

      @@inthedream9127 Ive seen Tool live a few times in the last 10 years and if you want to see them live you got to log onto Ticketmaster and get the tickets the second they drop or else you are paying double from a scalper. Hope this helps!

      It’s amazing how Maynard can improve on what appears to be perfection.

    I love how the "swells" in the middle of the song are the instrumental version of the water swells of the start of the song. Ugh and then when the synths hit its such a cathartic moment. Adam's guitar work is pure elegance in this song.
    In the theater of the mind as you say, this song brings me from the beach, to the depths of the ocean, then back to the beach. And what a journey it is throughout.

    I think its funny that the song is called descending, when it opens with you ascending. when it first starts, it sounds like your under water. Then you ascend above the surface.
