Yeah I mean I was a live when it came out as well. I mostly put those words in titles for better search results haha. But honestly this thing has a vhs look to it in my opinion. So I guess it does have a retro look to it. And it is a 18 year old camcorder
@brandoncameracollection oh for sure, I know why you used those words, it's just wild to me that that time has finally come haha! I still love all my camcorders and still use them.
Just subscribed because Ive been looking for a good channel for camera information and reviews. Seeing as I have recently aquired an extreme obsession for these older cameras, this is the perfect channel to fuel my addiction!
I''m onto your game sir, this channel is a well disguised attempt at making a scooter trick montage channel seem like Camcorder collection and review page. Well played my good man, but don't hide who you truly are, send it with a full scooter montage filmed exclusively on Retro camcoders! Ha in all seriousness your videos are very helpful and thorough, I'm in the process of looking for the best old school cam to purchase and your videos help immensely. Thank you and keep up the good work!
hey dude, new subscriber here. just wanted to tell you that i love the videos. finally a channel focused around this stuff. hope the ideas dont die out.
Hey thanks 😊 I’m glad you enjoy the content. The idea won’t die out unless people stop watching. But there just isn’t very many old camcorders documented on UA-cam. So I just want to share as many as possible as professionally as I can. I just like checking out old camcorders so I thought I’d make a channel about it.
I have the younger, digital cousins of this model! The DCR-TRV265E and the DCR-TRV480E I'm contemplating getting a CCD-TRV138e/238e to be able to record in true analogue.
@@brandoncameracollection Playback yes, recording no. Only the 480E can playback Video8/Hi8 though, 265E cannot. I think the 480E has an additional head inside the tape deck. When inserting an analogue tape it spools up like normal then shows an icon on screen saying “D8 -> Hi8/8” while it makes mechanical noises. Then you press play and it plays. Same in reverse when re-inserting a tape with digital footage on it. If a tape contains both digital and analogue data it will switch over automatically in the same way. Takes about 10-15 seconds to change.
@@brandoncameracollection NTSC video is 59.94 interlaced fields per second (60i), so you should be using a de-interlacing method that gives you 59.94 progressive frames per second (60p). See the video "How to convert VHS videotape to 60p digital video" -- the same method works with Hi8 tape.
Yeah there were a lot of camcorders at this time that had upside down tape decks. Another thing I actually forgot to mention is the audio for this camera I actually really enjoy it’s very crunchy sounding if that even makes sense haha
Well if you can find one that is in working condition or if you know how to replace capacitors on camcorders. I would say the Sony CCD-VX3/VX1. It’s the only hi8 camcorder has ever been produced with a 3ccd sensor. It was the model before the Sony vx1000 came out.
i have a question about this camera, it’s currently off do i buy a charger for the camera or charger for the battery? the question is really do i need to charge my battery to use the camera?
No you don’t have to have the battery in to use the camera. If you have the original power supply you can plug it in and turn the camera on as well. The power supply will also charge the battery if the battery is connected to the camera
I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC32, mini DV. It should be criminal how fucking cool these are. I want to do a short film with it. Give it a nostalgic 90's early 2000's film feel.
Yes! They are super fun. There is something about how mechanical they are and you really can’t mimic the way the footage looks from these old camcorders
@@brandoncameracollection you can make your DSLR like super 8, but I don’t know if it’s worth it considering most stuff filmed now is 16mm if they use film. It’s still unbelievable in quality

My mistake it was actually made in 1999 so I’m super confused how this camera does TRV 138 has the same built-in functions but it’s a lot worse than the camera that I own which is way older that has way more functions than a dumb camera from 2005
I had this camera when I was 12-13 (grew up in the HD era but still used tape cameras bc I liked them better)
Dang so you have been a video 8 man for life haha
I wish Sony didnt give up on camcorders. I will always love the form factor!
It's wild to me that this is considered nostalgic & retro! I remember when this came out. It was Sony's final analog Hi8 camcorder.

Yeah that’s honestly what I want is for people to keep using these old camcorders. Because it will hopefully keep these old formats alive

Why upload at 60fps if you're not using a de-interlacing method capable of producing 60fps video from NTSC footage, like Yadif X2 or QTGMC?
When I capture my footage I just try to capture it at the highest quality possible. Would it look better if I captured it at 30 or 24fps?

Can you hook a mic to this camera?
If I remember correctly yes but you have no where to mount a mic

Yeah kind of. Not like a dslr but you can attach wide, fisheye, and telephoto lenses. Just make sure it’s a 37mm
