i may not be the father of any actual children but i do have hundreds of hours of way-to-zoomed-in videos which is basically the same thing
Very close!
On hi8 or mini dv?
Pretty much... lol. My 6 year old has an obsession with taking videos on my phone. And ever since he was 2 his favorite feature is the zoom. Needless to say I too have countless hours of way too zoomed in footage 😂
ive been bringing a dumb, old, little compact point-and-shoot to school with me everyday for the past few months. mainly because i want to document my high school days in a way that when i look back at the photos, they’ll look like how the memory feels,, kinda fuzzy and warm. i’ve also noticed how different people react to a cheap camera rather than a phone, they’re less worried about how they look or if it’s going to be posted and i think that’s pretty spectacular. anyways, this video was so well put and i especially resonated with the line “this world we live in, doesn’t need any help being beautiful.”
awesome video, as always.
Lucky for you that these cams are so affordable and high quality enough to do that. When i was on school i only had a bulky VHS-C camcorder that i could only take with me on rare occasions like class trips. Tapeless camcorders were still too expensive and sucked so hard quality wise. Even digital tape-based camcorders were still tooo expensive for a poor student like me. lol Definitely a good choice to use an actual camcorder for that. Way better than just using a phone. Don't forget to make redundancy backups of all your videos on multiple formats. Just in case. Trust me, you absolutely don't want to lose all of these videos.
Panasonic DMC-TS5 is my Point and Shoot for vacations and special events.
Also got a 23 yr old Sony DMC-TRV11 & TRV30 that record 480p DVD quality on Mini DV cassettes
Also got Sony HDR-HD3 that does 1080i on Mini DV cassette
Sony HDR-UX20 that does 1080i on Mini DVD disc
You should hide away some of your videos and do not watch them till 10-15 years from now. I’ve noticed the old photos and videos I have of myself and friends that I’ve seen a lot don’t give me that warm and fuzzy feeling but when I come across a photo or video i haven’t seen a very long time that is when I get that feeling, but sometimes it’s also depressing cause those are the ones that make you realize how much time has passed. The ones you see a lot are the ones that feel like yesterday
i did the same thing when I was in college.
just was given an old 2000s cam out of my aunts closet and i've been filming my summer on it. it's just so refreshing to capture moments without any pressure and people never act weird in front of an old camcorder. been having a lot of fun capturing these moments!
Have you produced anything with it? that would be really cool to see :)
That’s very true, back in 2012 I was filming so much on my iPod touch and nobody had a clue cause back then it was before everyone used it for getting attention and “catching” people looking stupid, it was mostly just people who truly loved film making or recording memories. Those were my best videos cause they were candid, it was my friends truly being themselves(which is the version of them I love) and once they knew I was making videos they all started showing off and trying too hard to be funny. I definitely miss those days. Now everyone is paranoid of being recorded because they’ve made a fake version of themselves on their social media of them looking “perfect” and having an “amazing” life.. and since they have “fans” aka 100 followers and are “famous” now if someone takes a video of them that person is the paparazzi to them.
I’ve had a sony powershot I think I got it from 2006 and still have it works good as ever!
Storytelling at its finest. Thank you, sometimes we get stuck on filming the best images and we forget why we make them.
Watching this video, seeing the “old footage” gave me a feeling of odd nostalgia, a comfort feeling, like I’m back hanging out with my close friends in high school. Thanks for letting me feel that again.
this video makes me so happy. the storytelling, the sentiment, the nostalgia, the beauty of your memories captured in this video. its so wholesome to watch.
Really enjoyed this video! I feel that. instead of looking for new gear I'm looking for that old camera to get my life back together in a way
As a filmmaker dad, I relate so hard with this video. Love it.
I run an independent commercial filmmaking business, and have all the kit, but it somehow gets in the way when capturing family outings.
Really digging the idea of going back to the handycam for family memories.
Keep it up my guy. You’ve inspired a fellow filmmaker “dad cam” guy over here.
I HARDLY (if ever) comment on videos but I gotta tell you I look forward to your stuff every week. It may sound weird but the authenticity and pureness of your videos make me take a step back and think about what’s really important in life, especially when things gets chaotic.
Keep it up dude 🤙🏼
pssshhh how much did the cuck pay you? lol
Cheers to another unique and beautiful vid! You’re a true inspiration, Shaffer!
Very inspiring I love you audio mixing!
Thank you for this. I've been struggling a lot with perfectionism with film making and video editing. I used to love video recording until vlogging became the norm, and now I feel anxious when recording in public. I've been struggling with trying hard to make amazing transitions, editing and perfects shots only to realize what's important with what you said. I'm not trying to be martin scorsese, I just wanted to show and relive the dumb stuff, the dumb fun stuff I had with the people that I love.
P.S.: Amazing monologue and storytelling. Very well written.
I love researching new cameras, and hearing my friends music in the videos. Especially when it fits so well! How Great We're The Robins track at the end always makes me feel so positive!
Omg this video is so good, i love the chill vibes and your storytelling is amazing!
Love the vibes! Camcorder footage just feels so nostalgic and genuine :) Great storytelling too!
"This life doesn't need any help being beautiful." perfectly conveys the message of this video
On a trip I went on recently one of my friends brought a camcorder, she hasn't gone through all the footage yet, but just the act of recording with it was so fun a such a breath of fresh air, I think it's a bit more magical than the convenience of phones, just as convenient, but somehow a thousand times more warm, easy, and just plain old fun
Mahalo My Dude and IFHT films have made the dad cam an absolute must in their videos for a long time. With the right edit there is just no replacement, it offers a perspective, especially if you grew up in the 90's, that is just priceless.
Looks like an awesome adventure. Fun video idea by the way, we all need to use the tools we have and not worry as much about perfection to tell a story.
I found this video while doing research for my own video, loved the vibes in this video and you helped inspire. thank you.
Very inspired! Love your storytelling style. I learn to shoot short film since my high school with my dad's Sony Camcorder Camera record on DV8 tape, that brings back a lot of memories. Whatever medium we record on, how bad the picture and sound are, but the memories inside are more value than that.
I got a DadCam recently for exactly the same reason, I feel it really pulls characters out of story’s in a way no other camera can
what dadcam did you get? Im in the market
@@jadenlesser8519 I managed to find a Sony HDR-SR11E. It’s got a built in Hard Drive, and was like $2000 when it launched in 2008… been using it on commercial shoots as well, but, it’s almost toooo good.
This was lovely. Thank you 🙏🏼
Loved this, it felt so much more poetic than a youtube video should be!
Capturing life through these camcorders feels like using a time machine they really do take you back to times and places that feel special to us 📹 Keep creating man great video!
We just had a pool party about 2 weeks ago and i busted out the 23 yr old camcorder with a 23 yr old MiniDV cassette and everyone was like ... OMG ... old school camcorder LOL ...
This was an amazing video and an amazing piece of storytelling. Instantly subscribed, keep it up!
"This world doesn't need any help to be beautiful" Really struck me. It's so obvious but still hard to realise when I get lost in the technicalities. Thanks for the reminder and a beautiful video!
Story, story story, nothing else comes together without it and this works perfectly.
I love this! I was just thinking the other day about how I have one of these camcorders sitting in a drawer not being used and that I should get it out and have fun with it! Love that this video showed up in my feed. It’s beautiful.
It's like you're in my brain. Exactly how I feel. And artfully depicted. You have mad talent, brother!
That’s not a junk camera that’s a canon vixia that shoots 1080p 60fps which is up to par on today’s standards. The only thing you did was to turn the resolution on the camera down to 640p
Fun vid. Glad the algorithm pushed me a channel with someone trying to do things differently. Subbed.
Love the video and the reminder! Well done!
I rarely sub after one video, but this truly felt like a magical combo of storytelling and exploring a trend. Nice
Instant sub. Really loved this video from the beginning.
a camcorder, especially with interchangable lenses is better ergonomically than DSLR video. So much easier to work with
great narrative beats cinematic shots every time! I'm tearing a little at the end
Love the story! Great job Brother!
Great video. Love the vibe.
"This world we live in doesn't need help being beautiful." Love that!
Now I have a longing to own a camcorder and go out filming. I remembered when I was a teen we had a camcorder in the family and we record every moment what was special to us for some reason.
Anyway, I'm glad that UA-cam suggest your channel, because you have inspirational thoughts in different aspect of the life. Thank you!
inspiring!! great work
I've been using Camcorders for over 10 years now & it's been a crazy journey using them. Just a SD Card, charge your Batteries & Snap Action "Simple"
Love the Video.
amazing story telling love it !
Rad video! Fun documenting.
How did you colour grade the camcorder footage? Can you make a tutorial? Looks insane!
The same way you color grade any video
Nicely done sir. Looks like fun.
You're an extremely underated UA-camr, you bring such creative and new qualities on here. I know your channel is gonna blow up, I'm here to say I'll see it soon ❤
Awesome video, and great to see Jake frew too
great stuff! This is so cool :)
So good 😍
Indeed
One of the most beautiful videos I have seen in a while
This video is a masterpiece. I might break out the old camcorder and just start filming memories. It’s about the moment, not the video quality
I went to Best Buy in April and told the salesperson I wanted a camcorder to film my seven year olds first play. He recommended I buy a Sony A74 with a large zoom lens. I politely advised that I had several mirrorless cameras but I wanted a camcorder that has decent sound. We went back and forth before I ended up buying what I went in there for. A sony with a large battery that hangs off of the back. I mounted it to my tripod and was all ready to start filming. The Janitor said "you can't have that in here. no professional equipment!" I replied that it was a dad cam and that it was at least ten years old. "Oh Oh, that's okay then." I ended up getting great footage of my kid and left a happy dad. I enjoyed your video because filming your friends, family and buddies is what it's all about. Sure you can use a phone, but there is something magic about having a dedicated tool you can whip out when needed.
Crazy job on this one!
Such a precious video. Videos like these are so rare to find on UA-cam
You have convinced me to buy a camcorder 😂! great job keep it up dude
Please tell me how do you edit your videos look so beautiful? I love so much that color palette!
this is a SEVERELY underrated channel
Great Video. I reminding my dad having this kind of camera to film me as a little child. Was so great
What camcorder or dadcam you use for this video? Looks amazing the footage
"The world doesn't need any help being beautiful."
Totally agree!
Lovely vid! Perfect choice of words! I know what I'm doing this weekend! 👌
there's something about using a big camera or camcorder which people really like, probably knowing that it's for a genuine memory and not just to be uploaded to snapchat or something. It's like the same joy my polaroid brings to people.
Hi! Really like the colors in this. Just wondering if you'd care to share what you did in post to get the sort of film stock coloring? Thanks
Nice video. I will have to get together all my old camcorders.
I have a digicam on the way and a dad cam almost here. So excited to use em again
Saving my life. Perfect!
Have to agree, I’ve just bought a second hand Panasonic v380 and find I’m using it way more than my go pros, DJI pocket 2 etc. you just open the screen and press record. So easy.
We reached a very clinically clean digital images that got people feel everything is so artificial, out of that black pro mist and glow filters were created to tone done the sharp ultra clean image. even more companies like Fuji and now Sony are adding "retro-like" filters to their cameras. What's funny is that instead of getting high end cameras, lenses and filters then edit in post to cut down the sharp digital look and add film grain, we should just get old gear like this which will give the intended results from the get go!
dudeeee, what did you shoot the footage that was not the dadcam with? colors look amazing.
I have the same camera and I started using it again 2 years ago. The file size for the amount of recording time is unbeatable, it automatically gives the vintage VHS home video feel, like you said it's portable and can go from pocket to recording in a matter of seconds and lastly it makes you not care about all the rules and education we have given ourselves after countless hours on UA-cam on how to record and setting to use.
what is the camera name?
hey what type of camera is it?
Bro pls whats the cameras name
@@tejaswinimittakanti7889did u find it¿
Canon VIXIA HF R400@@keysndreams
I have many cameras for many purposes and I have shot many videos. Sometimes a camcorder is the best alternative. They are easy to use, have excellent AF and tracking, handle varying light conditions, and have built-in zoom lenses. Just a few weeks ago, I used one of my camcorders when I needed to record an in-motion motorcycle and rider for a promo video we were recording. The tracking and focus were spot on. The colors (after grading) were awesome. I didn't have to worry about exposure either. I just needed to make sure I captured the motorcycle for several seconds, and I did.
"This world we live in doesn't need ANY help being beautiful."
🙌🏻 Amen! aaamen!
We just need help believing that we've done it justice.
We'll done, Shaffer. 🤙🏻
I actually have a close relative of this camera (HF R40 instead of R400) that I use for field interviews. Eventually I’ll get something newer, but you can get decent results with some planning.
Same I’m obsessed with cameras & videos 😭
Last month, in Goodwill, for $17.99 I saw a Canon HF R500, similar to yours? And like you, I too am finding many uses! Especially when I figured out how to set the external mic audio level manually.
Gotta respect the Dad cam quick draw. Rad Hawaii trip and video
what camera is this?! looks so good, can you get the format and colours ising another camera?
Hey Shaffer, this is the first video I've watched from your channel and it was really good. I think it got suggested to me because I follow Jake Frew who I actually saw in your video lol. Was this video filmed with your cam recorder or something else? I am new to photography and was curious? Also did you color grade this video? Thanks
Love it, have-not had one in years, but after this I am going to get another.
I have a 90’s Canon Camcorder been unused since late 00’s now I fixed it and works just fine . Crazy how old cameras have such good quality
I had a small canon point and shoot that was so fun to whip out. Lost it in texas only 6 months later :(
As a dad, i can confirm that dad cam is a universal term.
This was a really good video
Simple, yet cool and entertaining = just as it should be, enjoyed this little film documentary .... well done ....
Great story - I've spent lots of money on camera bodies and lenses but there's nothing enjoyable to me about capture personal memories on a mirrorless or dslr body. I've been trying to convince myself to get a camcorder recently and your video pushed me in the right direction
please make a video showing how you processed and color graded your camcorder footage. I have a camcorder and i love the simplicity of shooting with it but cannot get this type of look at all
this was beautiful! what camcorder are you using exactly?
Great line bro... gonna use it if that's ok with you - "This world doesn't need any help being beautiful".
On par with the other great truth - "The world doesn't need any help being fun outside of, Dad Cams, Dad Dancing and Dad jokes". Oh yes!
Love me some camcorder!! I haven't had one in YEARS and I just picked one up a few weeks ago. It's amazing! I'm spending way less time getting my settings dialed in and instead just pressing record.
Looks sick how much messing around in post did you do or was it just a color grade and cropping to 4:3?
Image holds up even with that sweet grade!
thanks to video, it brought back my memories. Yesterday I used my Sony CCD-TVR99E again; it still works after 25 years.
Well said
Crazy my first few youtube videos were on a camcorder because its all I had and my parents gave it to me lol now its trendy
the beauty of film and analog items along with cam-corders are the pure imperfections (:
I've started using an old JVC camcorder but have spent months trying to figure out how to export the videos with the time/date stamp still on it! only shows up when exporting to DVD! still love the camera though.
great video :)
what do you use to edit?
I actually love the look of the grain.
I recently bought a Sony CX405 to replace my old Canon camcorder (probably same model as yours) and this video precisely describes me as a photographer/videographer, and my love for these devices. Thank you sincerely!
Stellar filmmaking skills when you are so skilled at portraying the overpopulated Mad Max chaos of the North Shore as such peaceful and glorious place. It can be indeed glorious when it is new and fresh, so perhaps I'm just totally over it, and so much happier to be back in the PNW. Enjoy, and may the madness completely reflect off you and yours' stoke forcefield.
