  • I was duped into supporting and promoting a creator who, it turns out, stole almost everything he produced. That's pretty embarrassing, and time to put it right

    I was a high schooler when I found him, and at one point I signed up for his patreon because he made a video about how much trouble his channel was in financially. I feel like I fell for a blatant manipulation there, I remember him specifically saying that he would never ask for support like this unless he was in real trouble and I naively believed him. His was the only channel I ever supported with money because I didn’t even have a job at the time, and I feel really gross about that.

      Yes, it's not always hard to be deceived. But it's important to be aware we CAN be tricked, and to learn from this, without becoming super cynacl and nasty about it

    It can take a lot of courage to be able to admit to mistakes. It is cool of you that you are able to do this.
    I didn't fall for James Somerton specifically, but I have had the experience of falling for liars in the past. It sucks every time, that feeling of betrayal.

    I luckily had barely come across him, so I don't have the same sense of betrayal, but I feel for you. I was already subscribed to some of the people recommended, such as verilybitchie, Matt Baume, and Alexander Avila. I'm now checking out more.

    While I never pledged to his Patreon, I remember finding his JK Rowling video so comforting after finding out what an awful person she was. I ended up giving Killing Stalking another chance after watching his video.
    If nothing else, Matt Baume getting a boost is wonderful. For real, his video on Kevin Conroy makes me ugly cry every time.

  • @alinachrist8416
    @alinachrist8416 6 місяців тому +9

    This is astounding how much this one person's actions have impacted so many queer creators and fans. I personally found his channel throufh his killing stalking video and really liked that someone was doing essay style vids about lgbt community on youtube.
    But his essays, in which he particularly promoted his ideas against capitalism, felt icky to me specially with the ad revenue that he got from them. I slowly stopped watching his stuff and moved on.
    It was so crazy seeing the channel I had considered to be a great source of queer essays turn out to be an unauthorized text-to-speech convertor for so many actual articles and books without acknowedging the authors at all. It was lazy, manipulative and disgusting.
    It hurts to think that people like him exist.

    I'm a cishet leftist & long-time fan of Hbomberguy from the early days of "breadtube" [sic]. I'm not sure if I've run across any of Somerton's work before. But I _have_ had Matt Baume's videos come up in my recommends on account of my interest in media criticism in general, and have watched a few. His vibe is the polar opposite of Somerton's, to me - where Somerton comes off as joyless, Baume is joyful, like, he actually _likes_ his job. Which, on top of the quality of his work in general, keeps me coming back. So, that's my recommend, FWIW.

      There's a pattern I've noticed, beyond the red flag of weird wording, with these people who plagiarized. They're always pretty monotone, they don't seem to be enjoying the work. Because, if you're just regurgitating someone else's words, where's your connection to the work? You didn't write it, and often when you're plagiarizing, your goal isn't to spread the work, that's just a means to the real goal; money. I noticed it with Blare (illuminaughti) and, once Somerton was brought to my attention, I noticed it with him too. Just another thing to look out for.

    For anyone looking to fill the void that James Somerton's exposure and subsequent exodus might've left in their lives (or who are just looking for quality content in general) I personally recommend Philosophy Tube, a.k.a., Abigail Thorn. She's a friend of hbomberguy and has a lot of really interesting content on her channel. Her latest episode, coincidentally, is about how she was plagiarized by some dude, and how this is an issue that a lot of women and people within the queer community have been subject to.

    • @tgraywrites
      @tgraywrites  6 місяців тому +11

      Can absolutely second this suggestion. I'm a philosophy grad and wish Abigail had been making her content back when I was studying (unfortunately we're a similar age!). Never miss one of her videos

      @@tgraywrites Same here. ^^ Started watching her stuff 4-5 years ago, and it's been a wonderful journey indeed.
      Also, The Stupendium, a.k.a., Gregory Holgate. They're not an essayist, and their content isn't exactly academic, but they're rather a nerdcore musician with a very leftist slant to their songs. (Check "The Fine Print" for a prime example of what The Stupendium's content is about.)

      I think she's great, but you don't have to agree with someone on everything to enjoy what they're doing or appreciate their perspective. Stealing aside, I just never got behind his stuff cos he always pushed opinions that to me as a gay man, made no sense and came off as extremely antagonistic and incendiary, and just seemed to make people like us come off as misinformed and crazy, and that’s absolutely not the kind of optics I want for myself when it comes to exposure to the rest of the world…

  • @naurrr
    @naurrr 6 місяців тому +5

    I'm so annoyed because I used to occasionally watch his livestreams and the way he interacted with the chat and his community always felt like he was arrogant and knew more than anyone else in his streams. like he was too good to answer earnest questions or respond to inquiries and ideas from the community and was just streaming to have people to talk down to. the vibes were majorly off.
    plagiarism like this is so ridiculously inexcusable and I hope he never resurfaces online. what an absolute tool.
