Dungeons & Dragons and the Combat Wheelchair
No, your D&D setting is not "grimdark" because you ban people from using the combat wheelchairs.
D&D is a power fantasy, the only thing you're achieving is making clear that the only power fantasy you're interested in is your own.

    The vast majority of people in wheelchairs and cripples find the combat wheelchair to be incredibly offensive for many reasons. Also it is rare someone wheelchair bound identifies their wheelchair as part of their identity. So they dont care about banning the Combat Wheelchair BECAUSE THEY DONT WANT TO BE IN A WHEELCHAIR IN THE FIRST PLACE. Also you declaring absolutes about ppl being bad gm's and bad people for not liking this offensive bullcrap, is cringe. Virtue signal somewhere else. No disabled person likes you waving your flags of virtue.

    I appreciate this because it's so exhausting trying to explain to abled people that shockingly, I - disabled - would like to be able to play a game without being told I'm a 'burden' or 'holding them back' or 'ruining their fantasy'.

  • @mikelsmith6803
    @mikelsmith6803 Місяць тому

    This video is so... single-minded about "it's a power fantasy, everything goes". No, not everything goes. Being in a chair has limitations that the GM will have to account for. Travelling through the forest? Nope! Way too much uneven ground for wheels. Up a mountain? Good luck with the slopes and the rocks stopping you. Desert, snow, the sea? More of the same. Actually forget about travelling almost anywhere with uneven ground for your story. And can't forget about stairs, can we? Well it's fantasy you might say, make it a flying chair, just hovering over the ground. That is convenient, isn't it? Problem solved. Well but then why wouldn't everyone have one of those if its convenient. At the very least the wealthy people should do. However, if it's a luxury item now, that is more convenient than walking, how is it a disability anymore? I guess no magical wheelchair then, we want to allow people with disabilities to be represented after all. Like it or not, that limits the settings and scenarios the adventure takes place in. And that affects the rest of the players and, arguably more importantly the GM who is the person putting the bulk of the effort when it comes to preparing the game. And just like some people don't want to see themes like spiders, pirates, any level of sexual content, political intrigue, or detailed descriptions of wounds, for example, why is something so impactful to the game as limiting the terain to adventure because one single companion with a disability where people draw the line? One can obviously ignore everything about this. Who cares you have to get up a ladder, your group will find a way to go up there even if it takes some extra time so you can ignore this detail. Same with stairs, swimming, or dungeon crawling. After all it's a power fantasy, we don't count arrows, or rations, we don't account for filthy clothes, nor the state of our shoes after hours and hours of walking. After all we are slaying dragons, finding treasure, taking down organizations and saving people. But, then... hopefully you don't try to take advantage of being in a wheelchair, that would titter the line of being a disability pretender, wouldn't it? At the end of a day disabilities are part of the real world, so are spiders, so are political issues, sexuality, serious injuries etc., It doesn't mean any of this needs to be active part of your fantasy story. I don't think this is an easy matter to settle in a broad way, and its more a table by table talk. Not being on board for any of the previous issues doesn't make you a bad person, the same way being on board doesn't make you a good one. Intent matters, and trying to apply some nuance to things will help you to realize that "my way, therefore good" or "against me, therefore bad" aren't the only two points of view out there.

    • @tgraywrites

      DMs having to account for things is the job description. If you want to play a game that isn't a power fantasy go for it, there's plenty of tables and game systems that cater for that. If you're playing a game that is a power fantasy and you're drawing an arbitrary line around your own fantasies as a GM that don't cater for your players then you're a bad GM. The fact you wrote all of this and clearly haven't bothered to read how other GMs have handled this, and have no curiosity about it, shows to me that you really don't care much about broadening your horizons as a games master. That's fine, you do you, you stick to what you know and I guess whatever players like that specific niche you offer. But don't pretend like it's about reasonable concerns about players or theme. It's at best being an old dog unable to learn new tricks, probably just laziness, and at worst just contempt for players who don't do what you want them to. Pick your poison.

    While i agree with some of what you said, this idea that you're not allowed to play grim dark setting with dnd ruleset is fucking stupid and you lost me at that point. DND should strive to include everyone but they are themes that will not. Grim dark is one of those themes, if you wanna play a disabled character in a grim dark setting then there needs to actually be a tangible, real drawback to the disability of your character. Something should act as some sort of limiter to their capabilities that is inline with whatever disability you picked.

    What is interesting about this discourse (I have seen it online many times) is how revealing it is to thoughts people have about disabilities and inclusion they might otherwise never say out loud. "If you play a character who has a disability, you are holding the party back. It is selfish! You're slowing everything down! A dungeon doesn't have accessible architecture, so you can't go in!" Exactly those same sentences have been said to wheelchair users and other disabled people in real life. People are constantly told, explicitly and implicitly, that their mere existence is a nuisance and "in a perfect world" they should not exist. Imagine that for a second. When I play a game, I actually like playing characters with similar body and mind problems that I have. My characters are disabled and have chronic illnesses because my "power fantasy" is not being in perfect health, my power fantasy is being able to cast fireball.

      Do you also know what completely ruin this whole argument of yours? The setting allow you to remove the disability with lesser restoration for free by any local priest. Also YOUR DISABILITY IS NOT YOUR IDENTITY. It is so incredibly infantilizing to see someone in a wheelchair and assume theyre also mentally ill to the point of making their disability part of their personality. "Hi, my name is Tom." "Hey Tom; just to let you know we allow the combat wheelchair because we are inclusive!" "Um...okay? I am a lvl 4 Barbarian!" "Awesome tom. Now what color is your wheelchair?" "My character doesn't have a wheelchair. He is a Barbarian. I want to be able to kick everyone's butt." "Tom, we are inclusive. You can kick butt the same way in a wheelchair." "Sorry, but that's not true. I got beat up last week bc I couldnt walk. Also my legs dont work so I literally cant kick someone." "Tom, Dont worry about that. We are inclusive here and the combat wheelchair is magic, and flies, and is immune to damage! We can let it have a free spell where you can kick people with Mage Hand" "No thanks. I will just be a normal Barbarian." "Normal? Tom, Dont be ableist." "Can we just play now?" "Yes Tom, but after a talk with the group we are concerned you arent playing your authentic self." "Oh, is this a litrpg setting? Sorry, I was playing a different character. Okay I will change my character's name to Tom." "Awesome Tom. Now what color is your wheelchair?" "I am not in a wheelchair." "Tom, as a group we are trying. Why dont you feel comfortable being yourself here?" "I am not my wheelchair." @@tgraywrites Theres a war going on between Israel and Hamas. Israel didn't start it. People get killed in war; Israel didn't want a war. So let's imagine a scenario where Hamas (Iran) win this war and then take control of Israel. Then the only gay-friendly state in the middle east will be gone. What then for all those people having to hide their sexuality just to stay alive?

    The only position I can really be on board with is if countries that are not really Europe proper that includes Israel, Australia and countries that only make it due to Eurasia definition should all be removed from Eurovision. I question solidarity with Palastine and that it is merely a vehicle to legitimise islamism within western normative values. Palastine is not a country that enjoys any functional human rights amongst themselves, it is a Sharia state which is grossly oppressive against many rights that are considered entrenched rights. My personal view on LGBTQ is what it has been for Gays and Lesbians since the 60's, as a dual nationality citizen Gay/Lesbian rights were more accepted in the UK vs in Israel however tolerance of a persons sexual orientation is openly received, what however is not supported is acts of debauchery, cavorting down the streets of Tel Aviv with very little on in openly sexual activities is to far. I also find it odd that nobody tries to fight for LGBTQ rights in countries that have zero tolerance for them ie: Palastine. As for "the war" that has somehow turned the bloodbath of gross human rights violations that is the Ukraine/Russia war into an after thought. Going on US military officials numbers that war is passing 1m casualties of war, including over 300 000 civilians on both sides along with tens of millions displaced along with metal and bone scrap yards. Do I believe Israel had the right to take action following October 7, yes, going on the precedent set following 9-11, America went on a 22 year run claiming 4.5 million casualties in various middle eastern states, they succeeded in destroying Al Qaeda, ISIS and they gave Afghanis civil liberties never experienced up until the "withdrawal". Israel was attacked by a country run by a government who's charter expressly calls for the elimination of all Jews, it is a Islamic supremacy document setting out totalitarian intents. Is it Genocide or Ethnic Cleansing, my opinion is no. Genocide is the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group. Destruction is the action or process of causing so much damage to something that it no longer exists or cannot be repaired. Going on the UN's latest population stats as of March 2024 the population in Gaza went up by 30-35K around 3% growth year over and Palatines total population grew by over 200 000 at around 3.5% that is neither effective genocide ie: Actually depleting the population nor intention, if Israel wanted to kill every Gazan they could but don't. It is not a situation we want, my eldest child is currently serving and that weighs heavy on us as parents, as does it upon Palestinian families, perhaps there is a better way to resolve this problem, I am hoping there are smarter and braver men to make that decision, what will be required is a mind shift in Palestinian thinking, we have found books and cartoons depicting murder of Jews used as propaganda material to indoctrinate the youth and create a generation of martyr zealots, if that doesn't change Palestine will suffer a generational crisis when their Youth die leaving an aged population. have war crimes been committed, very possible. I think Israel has pushed the limit on certain acts that have been a bit cringy notably the World Food Kitchen incident that was questionable for me, similarly I hold Palestine in contempt of war crimes. As a former veteran I have seen the use of child soldiers and that has been confirmed in this conflict, that is a no no by Geneva conventions of war, another no no is belligerents are required to identify themselves as combatants, hiding in the civilian population and then conducting military action in the attempt to ambush and make it impossible to identify civilian from combatant is a war crime as is choosing to fight in a civilian population. As a search and rescue pilot I have been shot at which is another no no in the book of rules of war. In summary there are no rules in actual combat, it is about personal honour and whether you can return from a war zone with your pride and dignity.
