I was working as a teaching assistant at Penn State when a student plagiarized his research paper--having stolen full paragraphs from an article written BY THE PROFESSOR OF THE CLASS.
Did they at least put the paragraphs in quotation marks? I actually had to resist doing that instead of rewriting something in my own words once. Somebody had written exactly what I wanted to say, but as I wasn't going to elaborate on it I couldn't include it wholesale.
We had a top level Politician in Germany, who held positions as the minister of Economy, Science and Defense at some point, whos political career ended when people found instances of plagiarism in his PhD dissertation. He stole work from several people, including his own dissertation supervisor, which is a true 200IQ move right there. He became a national joke in 2011 and was not really heard of ever since. Naturally this didn't HAVE to end his career as a politician - not like you need a PhD to qualify - but after the scandal the party didn't really want to be associated with him anymore and so he "decided" to resign. For anyone interested, the guy used to be from the conservative- right wing "christian social union" (CSU) - party. He also comes from some old noble family and his full name is "Karl-Theodor Maria Nikolaus Johann Jacob Philipp Franz Joseph Sylvester Buhl-Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg"
@@benedictrogers1478 If you just write: this was best expressed by : "" [source], then it wouldn't be plagiarism, would it? It might not get you a passing grade, if there is not enough of your own work in it, but as long as you clearly mark thoughts that are not your own as such, you are not doing anything unethical.
Some of the most damning evidence of Miucin's plagiarism was from Engadget's review of Samus Returns, who accidentally said that you aim with the R-Button. It's actually the L-Button. *Filip copied the mistake*
i have actually noticed that a lot youtube reviewers purposefully insert mistakes like that into their videos for that very reason. it's an instant tell.
I dunno, I kinda sympathize with the accidental plagiarist. I too sometimes fall face first into my keyboard, specifically the ctrl + c, then Ctrl + v, then flail my arms in pain to misclick my mouse to the submission box.
What I don't understand is, why didn't he just play the games and write/say what he thought? How hard could it be? Was he just too busy playing Candy Crush?
the way F. Miucin ends his video, a french president did the same thing (Valérie Giscard-d'Estaing in 1981) BUT with so much swag :) It became a meme in France.
*IT ACTUALLY WAS.* He lifted the entire structure of his apology from a video that was (paraphrasing) titled something like "How to manipulate your audience on UA-cam." This fuck has never done an ounce of original work in his goddamn career, even when it's over.
Using a template is not plagiarism, mate. Templates exist for a reason, I used one for my own CV, as do millions of others every day. Everything else he did, however... yeah, plagiarism. I don't even understand why he did it. If you play a game, I'm sure you must have an opinion on it, and you just put that into your review. Unless he never even played those games and then hastily copy/pasted some else's work to make it look like he did.
@@Azariachan Keep in mind he didn't so much copy a template as copy the descriptions within that are to serve as examples on how to describe the function word for word. Templates exist to help one improve their CV, not completely substitute parts like he has done. He didn't even try to build on it adding his own qualities. Just copy/paste and done.
@@Foxhood He did? The text was too small to read, so I didn't catch that. I just thought he was being mocked for using a template which is perfectly okay. If this is the case, my bad. He really is a loser.
I know this is definitely a joke, but do you think Cody Rhodes actually finds it quite funny? I mean, he hated the character of Stardust- despite how well he played it. If he even has an inkling that Sterdust exists, he probably really enjoys knowing Jim is out there.
If anything good came out of this dumpster fire, it's that at the very least Boomstick Gaming and Deadcells has gotten way more deserved attention from it.
EvilSandwich I’d say Boomstick got the bigger benefit as Dead Cells has a healthy following during its Early Access period. All Dead Cells got was a better release day.
TheAmazingDolphin dude what does Trinen say in that original video? Is it "ninja block"? Lol I've never been able to find that video aside from the clips in Jim's videos lmao
especially when IGN don't even have proper reviewers they clearly hiring students or bums off the street to do their reviews, most their reviews either paid off or comical clearly writers doesn't have a clue what they're talking about.
Pixel Perfect I abide by the notion that you shouldn't trawl the UA-camr pools to hire for a Journalist position for a few reasons: 1. It's better being the other way around. UA-camrs are making the mainstream games media sites more irrelevant by the day and we are seeing more and more qualified joutnalists are flocking to YT and Twitch to create they're own content. 2. Higher education isn't as much of a class issue as the effects of left-centrist government are still being felt and working class people (like myself) have gone to Uni and received an education. If anything It's our anti-intellectual society that does more damage to the act of applying for an education. 3. The culture of UA-camr can bring on an air of unprofessionalism and the need to work more comfortably. There are UA-camrs who do their job from scratch, do their research and still make an impact on society (like Phillip De Franco) obviously but by hiring based on views instead of experience will always comes first and that is something that is classist and comes with its own risks. Years ago, going by views would have been sound but now as UA-cam has grown, more people are using their already-established presences in order to garner views.
Pixel Perfect PLAGIARISM: "My computer was on fire yesterday." "My computer was on fire yesterday." NOT PLAGIARISM: "My computer was on fire yesterday." "The computer I own was on fire the day before today." It's only plagiarism when it's IDENTICAL. Just like Sterdust/Stardust thing. Sterdust isn't considered plagiarism, so why Miucin's reviews should be?
Somehow, working for IGN managed to convince him that: A) IGN's viewers are idiots, B) IGN's reviewers are unapologetic PR agents for the AAA game industry, C) the only thing that matters in gaming journalism is how much money it makes for the corporation you work for, and thus D) plagarism is okay, because it will never be noticed by your idiot viewers nor punished by your bosses. Amazing part was his logic was 100% correct on every single count except the last one, and even then only years after the fact. Don't you see? He's a specimen of what "journalism" has become these days.
Or I would say he’s masterfully good at being disingenuous because not only has he done it before but if he doesn’t know right and wrong in this scenario then there’s some other personality or behavioral issues.
Hal why do you think he did it? I would guess that it's probably not due to a lack of writing skills or even creativity, as hard as the latter is to swallow. My guess is that he decided to get into a field in which he is was not interested in. I've noticed so many game journalists that you can tell are casual gamers and don't have the experience to actually critique the material.
he knows four languages? lol i doubt that clearly using google translator if its true then he's going leave the country to look for work and continue the same bullshit again but in new country
Well I don't know about you but I thought Dead Cells was an amazing game: Dead Cells takes the progression of Metroidvania, and takes you into this procedurally generated action rouge-like, that has you slowly chipping away at its steep difficulty. Although Dead Cells falters slightly with some repetition setting in, especially in some of the earlier sections and longer play throughs. In most games of this genre your coolest spells are often set to strictly longer recharge timers or a limited mana system. But in Dead Cells, your abilities have extremely quick recharge which allows you to seamlessly integrate your new gadgets into normal encounters and it doesn't penalise you for using your cool stuff. Hey I could be a games critic!
The best part of the Metroid review is that Engadget actually made a mistake when they said that R is how you precision aim as it's actually L. R selects you missiles. But that's what makes Filip's "review" that much more damning because he also incorrectly claims that you precision aim with R.
He challenged the internet to not dig up info on him for other content stolen. Challenging the internet to not dig up or find something is a terrible idea if you did something wrong. Oops.
If I ever find myself guilty of something internet related I'll just preemptively come clean with the entirety of my browser history and all the weird porn I've seen throughout the years to steal their thunder. That said, there'd be no plagiarism.
Isn't is just the best? Every time it's the best show in the world. Every time some smarmy, cocky, arrogant little gobshite thinks they're untouchable and challenges the internet...every time they get their underpants hoisted up the flagpole while they're still wearing them. Even funnier when they do the "Upload a picture with the comment "Meme this"" schtick.
The internet is a vast resource of lots of people. He signed his careers death warrant. One fuck up he may have gotten back into the industry in a few years. that many, well good luck XD
8:37 "Holding -R- now activates a precision-aiming mode that allows for full range of motion and some extremely precise aiming." Firstly, Flip Miucin copied the mistake made in the review he copy and pasted from. Secondly, "A precision-aiming mode that allows for ... some extremely precise aiming". Make of that what you will.
This is why teachers kept repeating "plagiarism is bad" in school. True, not all cases of plagiarism in all types of media result in public outcry like this one, but plagiarism truly is one of the easiest ways to become distrusted, discredited or unemployed.
jim, can i just say i think its absolutely amazing that you've become a professional wrestler? like, that this silly joke you were doing turned into something real gives me so much joy for some reason.
That reviewer guy's condescending 'video games are totally rad' voice makes me wonder about the sanity of anyone who ever listened to him in the first place...
As soon as he appeared on the first podcast he was in I instantly knew he was faking it. He was a total yes man the whole time, never had a bad thing to say about anything and always agreed with those around him.
Also may I point out that he challenged Jason Schreier of all people, the *Peak Performance* investigative journalist in games industry with multiple publications. Guy couldn't have signed his death warrant fast enough.
Yeah I dunno what the hell he was thinking. Maybe he hoped the general disdain for kotaku would deafen people to anything schreier said? That would be almost as naive as assuming people would never notice nearly 1 for 1 plagiarism because you targeted small gaming youtubers...oh wait.
I mean... we're talking about a guy that even IGN threw out so it doesn't really matter who he targets, he's getting blasted back...And then as others said he goes for Jason effin Schreier... It's like drawing a water gun agains a Predator in full suit...
Two things; First, don't challenge the internet, there is no way you can walk away scott free. Second, don't challenge Jason Schreier, he's damn good at what he does and I've yet to see him be wrong about a claim. Oh and as a last mention, I'm glad that IGN dealt with this as fast as they did, just a shame they didnt hire boomstick instead as an extra middle finger to the twatstick.
At least IGN will be paying Boomstick for any royalties they gained through the video the guy copied. I got a lot of respect for IGN now, because there was no mention of any courts, or legal issues, IGN replied to boomstick right away and asked him what would he like done. And IGN agreed to pay him the money they got from that video. They never once said anything about going to court or anything. I was surprised. And IGN could of easily went to court, and probably won, they have massive amounts of money compared to a small UA-camr like Boomstick. But they kept it civil, and settled the wrong doing like professionals.
In The Mind of Kibara funny, I called him out and he didn't block me... but he probably just didn't notice what I said lol. I know he has blocked other people.
Yeah, that's Jim's job. He has an easy excuse to make a (not exactly investigative) video recapping what happened last week. Not saying that the dude did nothing wrong, not saying that you did something wrong. But expecting that he thinks you telling him what he has heard 10,000+ times in the last week is something worth engaging in discussion... I think that is a bit naive.
Several years ago I remember that a high school teacher failed most of her class for copying Wikipedia and changing some words around. The parents raised hell with the school board and the school board caved and forced the teacher to let the students redo everything regardless of the fact that plagiarism was explicitly a severe infraction that cal lead up to expulsion. I think the teacher moved on to a different school. The students did not have their records tarnished and this story is the kind of crap that these parents "protect" their kids lead. Anyway...
I bet his apology video was plagiarized too. From starting with a sigh...to the whimpering throughout the video...to the backhanded apology that wasnt an apology... ....to the finger pointing and boldly daring the internet to find more of his acts of stealing (which honestly wasnt to hard to find apparently...) And then ending with a dramatic walk off and vacant air...? ...Really? ..... ......REALLY!?
Apparently according to the thread where all his plagiarism was being discussed / archived his apology video went through the same process step-by-step as a video called "How to emotionally manipulate your audience" I haven't actually watched either video myself but that's the reaction most people seemed to have.
.............REAAAAALLLLYYYY!?!? ..... I was just joking but...wow. This guy really doesnt have an original idea in his head except how to steal? Just....wow. Course, having said this...I can't help but think i've seen an 'apology' video done just like that before. Probably why I said anything about it at all... I wonder who he stole it from?
I will never understand why anyone, ESPECIALLY a reviewer, would need to "research" (yes, that's an actual excuse he tried to pass off) another person's opinion to help their own.
I've been making video reviews for years, and one of the first rules I set myself was to not even glance at another review unless mine had already been finished. It's too easy to be influenced, even without downright stealing someone else's work.
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your comment, but hearing other's opinions about something can help you see it from a different point of view, and give you an appreciation for things you didn't like, or see flaws in things you did.
@@Here_is_Waldo hearing others opinions isn't a bad thing by any means, but you should probably be forming your own opinion before you write a review, and taking on other opinions can potentially dilute/influence your own. I dunno. This is probably why I don't do this for money.
Some people want to check if they forgot something important or maybe got something wrong at some point. Also, it is nice to hear other opinions to make sure you aren't influenced too much by how big of a fanboy you are. But yes, overall it is pretty dumb.
Not that I'm trying to defend Filip, but looking at other's opinions to help your own isn't a rare or bad thing. Hell, in school, we are taught to do research on other people journals and articles to help with our papers. The purpose to this is to gain new knowledge and perspective you did not notice or considered from your own experience. Some of those opinions you may disagree and as such you develop counterargument for them which makes your opinions more original as your own experience to disprove their opinion. However, what Filip fail to understand about "researching" is that it suppose to help form your opinion, not using the research as your own opinion.
@@JoeSmithGOAT no one cares when they do it. They just care when they get caught. Then they cut out side tumors from the main tumor and the cycle renews till the next time they get too big again.
I don't understand. Why when you've been *proven* to be a lying muppet, and you *know* you've got a bunch more skeletons in your closet, would you *challenge* people to find them? Ah well, hope this leads to a bunch more sales of Dead Cells, I love me a precision perfect pixel platform metroidvania. ... and is the Pumpkin Fucker the Pog Fucker's Halloween cousin? :P
Or he's simply a tool (which he evidently is) who thought that if he challenges people to find shit on him, everyone will be like "Oh, well, if he was truly guilty, he wouldn't dare to challenge us. He's good." ;D
The guy didn't have the intelligence to write his own review, why would you think he had the intelligence to NOT be an asshole? Seems like the only 'Dead Cells' associated with Miucin are those inside his cavernous skullhole.
But who is SterDust? Will we ever know his true identity? I have a theory that he is Ben Yahtzee Croshaw. Think about it no one has seen either and they both have the pompous accent.
He sounds exactly like Twin Perfect's disparaging impression of Devin Shatsky, one of the idiot devs behind the destruction of the Silent Hill series lmao
I don't understand this guy at all. Why become a games reviewer if you don't want to play games or talk about games? It would be like becoming a chef so you could buy prepackaged food from another place and pass it off as your own. Why?
BabyKrogan From someone who has worked as a cook for many years, the vast majority of the dishes you cook we're created by someone else. It's very rare in the restaurant industry to be able to make your own food.
"you can keep looking, kotaku," you would think that someone in his position would know better than to challenge the internet and tempt fate at the same time
Surely having a larger platform would have made it HARDER for him to get away with plagiarism. After all, writing a 9.7 review for the largest game reviewing site on the net would have made it almost impossible that the guy he had copied wouldn’t have seen his work. The more visible you are, the harder to get away with blatant plagiarism, right?
Tom Quirk He probably believed the platform would have his back, or that the victims of his plagiarism wouldn't dare attack the mighty IGN reviewer. In other words, he was, and is, delusional. Did you wonder *why* he did something as dumb as daring the Internet to find his other stolen stuff? I think I have the answer: he's a believer of the old myth that all publicity is good publicity, that creating this drama around him would make him infamous and help him with his career. He wouldn't be the first, that's pretty much the motive of all the dumbasses who tried to take videos of Jim and other people down. Of course it isn't going to work, but like I said he's delusional
Exantius E My theory is that Filip has his head so deep into his own ass and is so immersed in his own illusion that he did nothing wrong, that he honestly didn't think people would find more dirt on him. He tried to play the victim, he tried the "come on guys it's not a big deal" approach, and lastly he put all his eggs in one basket with the "try to find more plagiarized stuff" move... And then the basket flew off the window.
Who haven't accidentally done things like that? Just the other day I accidentally wrote down the Bible, slightly changing parts here and there but still the same yet I called it my original work! Happens all the time!
@@theguywhowentthere3346 What an original and well articulated theory. I want to offer you 10 million dollars to work for my company: Original and Well Articulated Theories Inc. Let me know if you're interested.
This hasn't been publicly vocalized yet, that I am aware. But the copying of anothers work or, plagiarism (for non-lamens.) Rarely happens only once!!!
Except for "Still a better love story than twilight" Or commenting some variation of how the trailer spoiled the whole movie... those comments aren't comments they're like button sponges
In other words, Miucin is clearly a narcissist because of his behaviour, which also makes sense given the fact that he adheres far too closely to the seven plots rule.
The only reason to go to IGN anymore is the spectacle of a company so totally absorbed as a money trading flag bearer of the entertainment industry. They're a glorified ad site now.
Rimmer agreed half the games they talk about, they do it because they are paid to do it. Fuck ign for not catching this guy earlier too. The excuse that it was hard to know he was a palagiarizer because its hard to check for plagiarism in video content is b.s because this guy has plagiarized the written word before this as well which is supposedly easy to check for this kind of thing. Why the fuck didn't they catch him when he copied the nintendolife review or the Engadget one? because they don't think one of their's can do something like this and because the culture of not actually playing the games you review or talk about is ok at IGN and all of the rest of the so called 'games media'
RIP his career. While it's not rare for journalists to essentially release similar piece but with words changed here and there, that's generally because they are quoting a press conference or covering an event.
When I was getting my mechanical engineering degree, I had a semester with 4 lab classes. 4 lab reports due each and every week. It was an absolute nightmare, especially considering that I ended up doing nearly all the work. If all my worthless group mates, though, one stood out. He "wrote" his section of the paper and linked his source. The source was goddamn Wikipedia, and his writing was literally copied and pasted. I told the professor, because plagiarism is supposed to be an expellable offence, and she gave a half-assed speech to the class about doing your own work. The next week he did the same thing. Anyways, Dead Cells is fucking incredible. I'm like 110 hours in and working on an art piece based on it* tight now. *I mean, mine is a pixel art painting, so I guess, technically, I plagiarized it. Shit. (Play Dead Cells!)
That's called fan art and I would love to see your piece. It's not plagiarism if you actually put effort into copying something from an IP in your own style. The maker of YIIK using exact words from a Japanese novel to make parts of his story? That's plagiarism. An 8 bit remix of a song? That's not plagiarism if you at least acknowledge the source material. I know, I know, you're just joshing, but I do respect it. Point is, where's that artwork of yours?
Well, they did react very strongly and more or less as fast as anyone can ask, so I'd say their stock actually rose a little. Not that I necessarily trust their reviews as such, but I can certainly appreciate a company that walks the walk (as in removing all the content he was involved with and firing his ass).
Honestly, like Haan22 said, acting so fast and so decisively helped their credibility in my eyes. They did the right thing, did it VERY quickly, and left no wiggle room about it.
As John Milton put it, "Plagiarism only occurs if the work is not bettered by the borrower." Don't break the rules and plagiarise someone's work. Be inspired by them, sure. Learn from them, sure. Remix and build upon other's work until it's totally different from the original. Make it your own. Own it.
I've always regarded IGN as a last resort for literally anything games media related. This new scandal does nothing to alter that opinion. Even still i feel bad for IGN having to run damage control over this.
Agreed really. I haven't paid much attention to them in several years simply cause it became increasingly apparent to me that most of their content was either: written by people who are unaware of or incapable of noticing flaws in game design and writing; or that the outlet as a whole was...well i wont say "on the take" but defiantly more friendly with publishers (especially the ones that can power children's toys if you catch my drift) to the point of being critically corrupted. That being said i really do not envy their staff having to deal with all this crap and the horrible shadow it has cast on an otherwise entertaining, (if not, in my opinion, reliable) games media outlet.
There's just way too many places to go for video game information that it's weird to even have a last resort when even tiny, unknown youtubers will report on video game news, and far less biased. IGN's reaction to this situation was actually really solid, to which they get props for, but this does not undo their awful reputation. Aside from their PR management team (at least in regards to this incident), the only thing I can really say in their favor is they aren't as bad as Kotaku
I've been a video game journalist for the past 13 years, and it makes me so sad to see people like this Filip guy continue to tarnish the already godawful reputation of our trade. There is no excuse for plagiarism. Period. Stealing from fellow hard-working people in the same line of work is abhorrent enough, but this idiot going the extra mile and trying to ego-trip himself out of an already terrible situation is like pissing in the community pool...from the starting block. Did it slip his mind, that the Internet NEVER forgets? He not only made himself completely unhiriable as an editor and journalist, but probably as most everything else too. In this day and age, employers don't just check your credit and rap sheet, but also your social media and history on the Internet. A simple friggin Google search would out him as an untrustworthy, lazy crook with an ego the size of the Sun. No sane employer would ever hire someone like him, because as Jim said, plagiarism never happens just once. It's a character trait, one that combines complete inability or reluctance to do your job with the complete disregard for other people's hard work that borders on sociopathy. Combine that with the utter lack of remorse and sheer arrogance he demonstrated after the fact, and you get a person that's lower on the hire-list than ex-convicts. There are no halfway-houses for people who commit career/character suicide of this magnitude. So, Filip, good luck flipping burgers somewhere in the middle of nowhere with no internet connection...
Well said. Also in an unrelated thread: i should probably stop commenting walls of text on political stuff on facebook so much.... You never know these days.
@Le Beholder If you won't stand up for your own beliefs and values, you don't deserve them. If you are so worried about what other people think if you, it's your choice.
Playbahnosh Let's not get carried away. If Le Beholder's situation's anything like my own, it's a case of just caring too goddamn much - and then, avoiding charged discussion is a matter of self care and maintaining your mental health. Stand up for your beliefs, absolutely - but pick your battles and don't burn yourself out. Burn yourself out and you won't be able to fight at all.
@Tengila No no, I was talking about the walls of text on political stuff. Don't get me wrong, I do that too, waaaaay to often. Hell, I sometimes spend more time and energy researching stuff for a damn youtube comment than my actual job, because the journalist in me won't let me post unfounded bullshit. I'm not Filip Miucin (bazinga!). I was talking about the notion that one should stop speaking their mind because "who knows who's listening", you know. If you are scared to speak your mind about things you care about (walls of text notwithstanding), then we truly are living 1984... And probably this is why I spend so much time and energy writing comments, explaining my views, to make sure if anyone quotes me on any of them, I can stand up and say "yes, I said that. What about it?". No regrets.
He knew he was fucked when the other stories about him were primed to come out. The fact he challenged the internet to do so has to be some weird Freudian admittance of guilt For just this one time, he could've made a sob story about deadlines and give transparency and promised to book his ideas up. But he knew his house of cards was about crumble. Why on earth he came out and "apologised" (in a way that wasn't apologising for his actions, nor was it admitting anything) is beyond me.
Not entirely. The chapter on propaganda is copied wholesale from a German army manual. It's apparently the best part of the book because Hitler himself was a shitty writer.
I mean there are positive sides to this. Boomstick gaming and the game itself garnered a lot of following. For example I didn't even know that this game existed, and now I'm loving it. And this event also makes IGN pay closer attention to the content that they are creating.
I saw the game's cinematic trailer on Nintendo's channel and at first I was afraid it was going to flop (I don't know why I thought that), but I am happy to be proven wrong
Yeah, I'd never heard of the game, but when I heard about this story, and heard nothing but good things about the game and liked how it look, I got it as quickly as I could. It isn't my favorite game or anything, but I am quite enjoying it.
This man is currently trying to make a come back in games journalism and some people believe he should be accepted with open arms. Glad this video is here to remind people why that shouldn't be the case.
But.....but it's a GAME REVIEW!!! You play a game and write an opinion! Why the hell would you plagiarize?!? It sounds like it's the most enjoyable part of the industry! ....Also, there's "higher education" in game reviews? Wat?
Well, journalism in general. Learning how to write informative and with concentrated information, understand the industry at large, conduct proper resarch... Of course, like almost all kinds of journalism, but more so in gaming due to its specific surroundings and nature, these things are often not that important given that more entertaining (or sensational) work gets more important than quality work in the age of clicks. Opposse this with more classical newspaper journalism - especially before online components became more important - and you generally find more high-quality work needing education, that is simply not worth it in more modern media. This is still present of course, but outside of giant scandals its unfortunatly rare for it to be worth the time of the journalist to do a lot of resarch and write in-depth contributions to something.
RoverStorm I might be wrong, but I was under the impression Jim had a degree in journalism. As for playing a game and having an opinion- are you mad!? There is no way a "game reviewer" would have time for that! We all know that they get all the girls and they don't have time to write or play because they are too busy handling the thousands of people throwing themselves at them! Oh, and they also spend time making hideous abominations if Jim is any example... I mean, the Cornflakes Homonculus, Pog Fucker, Jimsaw...
@Noah Gray Heeheehee, no no, Jim Augent Sterling Son's a mild mannered Game Reporter by day, and a superhero named Sterdust at night. So of course he doesn't have time! :)
Haha, yeah, right. 'Play' a game, then write about it. I doubt Phillis Mucinex even had a cool 90 minutes of playtime recorded to his Steam. Hell, even 10 minutes might be giving that poser too much credit. Just from the way he spoke, it's easy to tell he had no actual feeling or sense of experience with it.
Sterdust/Sterling said that there generally WASN'T higher education in games reviews. I know you're just trying to 'do a thing' to try and belong to some online group or another, but still. Could 'doing a thing' be counted as plagiarising a YT comment?
I wasn't genuinely ticked off with him until he posted that disgusting apology video in which he denied the obvious and even threw accusations at someone he'd stolen from... I was willing to assume something was going on in his life and he just stole a review due to some time constraint (especially as it was such an obvious, seemingly unpracticed theft) which would warrant firing and such but not necessarily mean he's a terrible guy, but after that video it was clear this man is an asshole. I suppose sociopaths just can't help themselves.
Not even the original writer of the Dead Cells review was all that mad when the incident started. Philip probably had a chance to redeem himself quite a bit with a sincere apology. His pride got to him, probably couldn't stand the idea that he was ever in the wrong. Though it was probably a good thing he did post that video, since it exposed all the works he did before the Dead Cells review.
i mean, look at all the douche tubers out there. they make a killing being assholes to everyone. mind you, they have a core audience of SaF kids and teens, but it still makes a fuck ton of money.
Same I saw Jim playing some of Dead Cells in an earlier video when he briefly touched on this topic. I loved the fast gameplay on display and went and bought the game straight away.
even if he played the game, he clearly doesn't know how write a proper review for it, already seen how many examples he stole from other people to do his reviews
No one accidentally plagiarizes an entire 4 minute video, then instead of owning up to his mistakes he tries to weasel his way out of it by telling people to find others who plagiarize. What a lazy, cowardly, weasel of a human being.
Come on Jim, where's our officially Sterdust-endorsed wrestling video game, Saturday morning cartoon AND breakfast ceral? I'm sure you could get a sweet deal after so many years of having the Cornflake Humunculus as a corporate mascot!
This man needs to be removed from UA-cam and not be hired by any game review companies. Not only did he have the gall to plagiarize someone's work, he didn't give a proper apology (a half-assed one), he continued to act "holier than thou" and assumes that everything is right as rain and he didn't to anything wrong, challenges the audience to find any more of his faults (which graciously backfired on his ugly mug), not only all that, he then started to play the victim card and now blocks people on twitter to prevent further damage to his already low ego. This man is the grime of the barrel. The black stain on bottom of your coffee cup that won't go away.
The thing I don't understand, maybe this is just the way "contributor" authors/editors work in the new media. The second they hired him they pretty much let him write and submit reviews independently without oversight or review. Jeez! I usually get micro managed hell for the first 3 months until I pass probation whenever I start a new job. It amazes me how anyone close to him missed it, that their co-workers didn't notice his actual day to day work didn't reflect his plagiarised writing style, their had to be warning signs professionally... but then again his own co-worker didn't realise he swiped their thoughts for his Octopath review.
why do you think journalism is such shit now? it's all about getting something out quick instead of taking the time to research anything. they'd rather print a retraction that no one will read than be late to a story.
Thomas, while I agree that its quick to press actions have resulted in some bad media practices (like watching television news quote twitter and facebook posts as "sources"), IGN hired him and didn't professionally mentor/supervise him in a capacity to notice his writing style is uncharacteristic of the person. Its alarming.
Journalism vs. Sensationalism. One sells better then the other, and its more about making money rather then spreading truth more often then not. For example, remember the shooting at the YT HQ a few months or so back? not to long after it happened, i saw several articles claim it was a domestic dispute that lead to the shooting. but in reality, it was completely different. Lets also not forget the countless times News company's paint Video games as "Murder Simulators" or make the bold claim that "Video games influence people to commit crimes" with flimsy study's and outrageous segments that kids say they play about 20 hours of video games a week and then make it sound so much worse then it really is(there are 168 hours in a week after all) with some bullshit headline. Don't forget, good news doesn't sell as well as bad news.
You see the same annoying comments on different videos all the time so yea people are plagiarizing them. Like "the last time i was this early" or "top ten anime battles" or "your dog looks weird" or "that moment when" for example
if he was stupid enough to plagiarise multiple different reviews, I am not surprised to hear that he came back to games journalism without thinking it through.
Check 8:14, the most hilarious thing about this is that you actually aim with the L trigger, not the R, the guy plagiarized a mistake, a bloody mistake! Does he even play the games he reviews?
It's like when an asset flipper keeps a tower half floating in the sky, just because they either didn't care enough to check, or are too dumb or bad to fix it.
Keep in mind that Jim may be, by his own admission, extremely fat, but so are _sumo wrestlers._ And they're absolutely not guys you want shoving you around either.
I was working as a teaching assistant at Penn State when a student plagiarized his research paper--having stolen full paragraphs from an article written BY THE PROFESSOR OF THE CLASS.
grumpyotter how can people be such idiots?
Did they at least put the paragraphs in quotation marks?
I actually had to resist doing that instead of rewriting something in my own words once. Somebody had written exactly what I wanted to say, but as I wasn't going to elaborate on it I couldn't include it wholesale.
Geez, talk about being ballsy and stupid..lol
He also comes from some old noble family and his full name is
"Karl-Theodor Maria Nikolaus Johann Jacob Philipp Franz Joseph Sylvester Buhl-Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg"

What I don't understand is, why didn't he just play the games and write/say what he thought? How hard could it be? Was he just too busy playing Candy Crush?
Wouldn't it be funny if we found out that his apology was plagiarized too?
It would be very ironic.
@@UltimaKeyMaster He hasn't done something original in his entire life. Don't know how he got away with shit in English class.

You don't get it though. That IS selling himself. How better to sell a plagiarist than by plagiarizing the pitch?
@@Azariachan Yeah no. Plenty of people use templates. My CV uses a template. This guy used the template *as* his whole resume.
Don't forget that he had also monetised that apology video he released before he took it down.
How dare that Stardust clown rip off Sterdust like that.
I know this is definitely a joke, but do you think Cody Rhodes actually finds it quite funny? I mean, he hated the character of Stardust- despite how well he played it. If he even has an inkling that Sterdust exists, he probably really enjoys knowing Jim is out there.
Cody would probably get him booked for the All In Zero Hour battle royal.

If anything good came out of this dumpster fire, it's that at the very least Boomstick Gaming and Deadcells has gotten way more deserved attention from it.
EvilSandwich
I’d say Boomstick got the bigger benefit as Dead Cells has a healthy following during its Early Access period. All Dead Cells got was a better release day.
Boomstick did benefit, although there are people attacking him believing he was the one plagiarizing.
I'm not sure I would count them as anything, as they are clearly too dumb to get even their surface facts straight.

A fluid, quick and responsive video. 4.35 Miucins out of 5.
Pixel Perfect I abide by the notion that you shouldn't trawl the UA-camr pools to hire for a Journalist position for a few reasons:
1. It's better being the other way around. UA-camrs are making the mainstream games media sites more irrelevant by the day and we are seeing more and more qualified joutnalists are flocking to YT and Twitch to create they're own content.
2. Higher education isn't as much of a class issue as the effects of left-centrist government are still being felt and working class
people (like myself) have gone to Uni and received an education.
A fast, fluid and responsive video. 19.4 Miucins out of 20.
Pixel Perfect PLAGIARISM:
"My computer was on fire yesterday."
"My computer was on fire yesterday."
NOT PLAGIARISM:
"My computer was on fire yesterday."
"The computer I own was on fire the day before today."
It's only plagiarism when it's IDENTICAL. Just like Sterdust/Stardust thing. Sterdust isn't considered plagiarism, so why Miucin's reviews should be?
Also he monetized his apology video lol
He plagiarized his apology video too. I made that exact same apology 2 years ago and took it down immediately after.
Good god, is he fucking Momokun?
I fucking knew someone plagiarized my apology video from 4 years ago that I took down before I even posted it.
To be fair He did make that video himself so Thats the only fair money He ever earned.
He plagiarized his apology video too. I made that exact same apology 2 years ago and took it down immediately after.
The baffling thing about all this is that Miucin seems to genuinely believe this is normal operations for a writer.
Sad, but true.................
Shows how common sense isnt so common.
Well my second writing job was literally hitting ctrl+c and ctrl+v on press releases
He even copied his LinkedIn profile and apparently he's multilingual in four languages. He's probably plagiarised outside of the English language too.
He probably lied and just uses google translate.
If a plagiarist learned other languages to extend his steal-reach, then I have to give kudos to that one.
That would be genius. Nearly no Anglo ever made the effort to learn a second language, this would be the perfect crime.
he knows four languages? lol i doubt that clearly using google translator
if its true then he's going leave the country to look for work and continue the same bullshit again but in new country

Well, that's all the time I got.

Rule ONE of challenging people to find evidence of your guilt: make sure you're _not actually guilty_ first.
Maybe this guy is actually just so delusional that he thinks he's never plagiarized before
The best part of the Metroid review is that Engadget actually made a mistake when they said that R is how you precision aim as it's actually L. R selects you missiles. But that's what makes Filip's "review" that much more damning because he also incorrectly claims that you precision aim with R.
Maybe they did it on pupose. Like Larry, the guy WatchMojo stole from.

Larry said on this twitter that he lied about putting mistakes in there. and WatchMojo believed him

Also may I point out that he challenged Jason Schreier of all people, the *Peak Performance* investigative journalist in games industry with multiple publications. Guy couldn't have signed his death warrant fast enough.
literally who
Yeah I dunno what the hell he was thinking. Maybe he hoped the general disdain for kotaku would deafen people to anything schreier said? That would be almost as naive as assuming people would never notice nearly 1 for 1 plagiarism because you targeted small gaming youtubers...oh wait.
Patrick Murphy Unlike IGN, Kotaku actually has established personalities, so it's easy to tell which articles are worth reading and which aren't.
I mean... we're talking about a guy that even IGN threw out so it doesn't really matter who he targets, he's getting blasted back...And then as others said he goes for Jason effin Schreier... It's like drawing a water gun agains a Predator in full suit...
Two things;
First, don't challenge the internet, there is no way you can walk away scott free.
I challenge the internet to give me $1 each.
Did each internet give you $1?

The people on the internet are worthless. He could get away.
Plus, Schreier is STILL salty after Playdek kept giving him and backers the runaround with Unsung Story.

Why call him out anyway? You think he hasn't noticed that he got caught?
People just want to say they are disgusted by his actions. Which is basically what Jim is also saying here.

Surely having a larger platform would have made it HARDER for him to get away with plagiarism.
12:50 “breaking into a farm and ****ing the punpking is illegal, no matter how much you wanna do it “. ... oh, crap :(
Who haven't accidentally done things like that? Just the other day I accidentally wrote down the Bible, slightly changing parts here and there but still the same yet I called it my original work! Happens all the time!
Were you able to smooth out the "begat"s in the Old Testament? I could never get through that part.
I think he might be referencing the Q'ran
Are you the one who changed Jesus' name to Gary?
Gaudia Certaminis Oh my god imagine worshipping a dude named fucking *GARY* 😂
Make the plagiarist cry like anime fan on prom night.
As much as I dislike IGN, I can at least give them some credit in how quickly they handled the situation.
I don’t know if anyone has said this before, but I don’t think plagiarism happens once.
I not sure if anyone has said this before, but I don’t think plagiarism happens once.
I'm quite certain this has yet to be repeated: but the act of plagiarism is rarely a single and assumed innocuous act.
@@theguywhowentthere3346 What an original and well articulated theory. I want to offer you 10 million dollars to work for my company: Original and Well Articulated Theories Inc.
Let me know if you're interested.
I'm unaware if anyone has stated this before, but I don't think plagiarism occurs once.
This hasn't been publicly vocalized yet, that I am aware. But the copying of anothers work or, plagiarism (for non-lamens.) Rarely happens only once!!!
I dont see anyone else praising him for that Musenex joke and it was an amazing joke. Good job Jim.
A UA-cam video's comment section has more original work in it than anything Miucin has done in his life.
Except for the copy paste memes... But ya I agree with you
Yeah comments on UA-cam have more originality then him.
Except for "Still a better love story than twilight"
Or commenting some variation of how the trailer spoiled the whole movie... those comments aren't comments they're like button sponges
A UA-cam video's comment section has more original work in it than anything Miucin has done in his life.
In other words, Miucin is clearly a narcissist because of his behaviour, which also makes sense given the fact that he adheres far too closely to the seven plots rule.
The biggest surprise is that people still go to IGN for game reviews.
Can't resist free stuff.
when their shit comes up in my recommended feed I tell youtube to stop recommending me things from their channel, but they don’t listen
Because they're literally the first or second link you get when you search for game reviews. Most people don't bother searching further than that.
As if IGN needed people to question the integrity of their reviews more...
Well, they did react very strongly and more or less as fast as anyone can ask, so I'd say their stock actually rose a little. Not that I necessarily trust their reviews as such, but I can certainly appreciate a company that walks the walk (as in removing all the content he was involved with and firing his ass).
Drink a Beer and Play a Game your nickname deserve respect👍
*cough* compare their DOOM 2016 review with every single one of their Call of Duty review. *cough*
Honestly, like Haan22 said, acting so fast and so decisively helped their credibility in my eyes. They did the right thing, did it VERY quickly, and left no wiggle room about it.
What integrity?
Jim, it's so much fun watching you as Sterdust because you look like you're just having way too much fun with this.
He is having too much fun... SOMEBODY STOP HIM!!!
Can't believe it's been exactly two years since this video came out...
Time fucking flies.
It's scary, and tha amount dead cells changed in that time aswell

As John Milton put it, "Plagiarism only occurs if the work is not bettered by the borrower." Don't break the rules and plagiarise someone's work. Be inspired by them, sure. Learn from them, sure. Remix and build upon other's work until it's totally different from the original. Make it your own. Own it.
Obviously he's a busy man, so he skipped the middle parts and went directly from reading to owning.
I love the fact that "Audacity" is open at the bottom of the clip with his dead cells review. Perfect :)
It's amazing how far you can get in the industry with barely hidden flagrant plagiarism.
I've always regarded IGN as a last resort for literally anything games media related. This new scandal does nothing to alter that opinion. Even still i feel bad for IGN having to run damage control over this.
Cooltrainer Ian IGNorant sums it up for me. They have such a controversial, pathetic history that you must be dumb to watch them
Prepare To Try was the only good thing on there and they have their own channel now so lol
For their (many) Sins, IGN did nothing wrong in this case. They handled the situation well and made the right actions.
I love how he said “Oh it’s unintentional” like college professors haven’t thrown essays into their paper shredder for even accidental plagiarism.
Bang. on.
The fact he challenged the internet to do so has to be some weird Freudian admittance of guilt
For just this one time, he could've made a sob story about deadlines and give transparency and promised to book his ideas up. But he knew his house of cards was about crumble. Why on earth he came out and "apologised" (in a way that wasn't apologising for his actions, nor was it admitting anything) is beyond me.
I had to look for this manually because it didn't show up on my sub feed. Thanks, UA-cam.
I will not say that Philip Musen is worse than Hitler, but Hitler wrote his book on his own. Just sayin.
Not entirely. The chapter on propaganda is copied wholesale from a German army manual. It's apparently the best part of the book because Hitler himself was a shitty writer.
@@Anomaly188 then i guess hitler's on par with Musen xD
@@Anomaly188 Wait wait wait, you're telling me that Hitler was a plagiarist? Is there ANY crime he DIDN'T commit while he was busy wasting our air?!

Who, exactly, are you talking about here?
so who else returned here after 5 years because hbomberguy made plagiarism a big thing in everyone's mind and in the algorithm?
I didn't realise the story was so old
But.....but it's a GAME REVIEW!!!
@Noah Gray
Heeheehee, no no, Jim Augent Sterling Son's a mild mannered Game Reporter by day, and a superhero named Sterdust at night.
@Jim Sterling, thank you for covering this.
I would never have checked out dead cells if this controversy hadn't have happened if I'm being honest, and god damn it I now love that game!
Some say there's no such thing as bad publicity. I never knew about the game until this happened, either.
i mean, look at all the douche tubers out there. they make a killing being assholes to everyone. mind you, they have a core audience of SaF kids and teens, but it still makes a fuck ton of money.
Same I saw Jim playing some of Dead Cells in an earlier video when he briefly touched on this topic. I loved the fast gameplay on display and went and bought the game straight away.
As "I" always say, when someone is digging your grave, don't hand them a shovel.
And guess what? He's back and trying to get a reset on his career by doing a new review of DeadCells.
Why would you risk your career on something like this? Just play the game holy cow
His career was built on constant plagiarism so it was only a matter of time.
ownagemunky he had done it before many times and no ones noticed so he assumed this time the same would happen
Yeah, it's less risking and more so built with it.
even if he played the game, he clearly doesn't know how write a proper review for it, already seen how many examples he stole from other people to do his reviews
Dead cells is far from average it is a excellent game.
4:26 so quick blink and you'll miss it! Calling him an alleged writer is bloody genius Jim, this is why I love you XD
Snizzbut my god i missed that! This just made it allegedly the best video about this topic!
reka10 ikr I almost did, had to rewind to make sure I heard it right!
Rule #1 of the internet..............NEVER EVER EVER EVER EEEEEEEEVER challenge anyone on the net to find out anything about you, cause they will.
No one accidentally plagiarizes an entire 4 minute video, then instead of owning up to his mistakes he tries to weasel his way out of it by telling people to find others who plagiarize. What a lazy, cowardly, weasel of a human being.
"... or believing in what Randy Pitchford said."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He's back and whineier than ever
Captain Merx I’m sure he’ll eventually remove his entire online presence
if he was smart, he would. although he is more then likely going to re-emerge under a new name. still, his chances of a career in gaming is vaporized.
Coming back to this vieeo, Jim really should trademark Chungus Productions.
Jim. You're constantly saying his name incorrectly. It's pronounced "confirmed plagiarist Filip Miucin".
Nanaki Does Filip really deserve such a dignity at this point?
Peter Hanson You’re right, “Copied Plagarist Filip Miucin”.
You beautiful bastard
Please do another one if these! He's trying to mount a comeback!
Most likely reason for this shameful idiocy: pure laziness.
He literally just didn't care.
I want to add that if you search just "filip" on Google. You get only news of his plagiarism. This man, single handedly, destroyed his namesake.
You have to admit: At least that did he very efficiently and carefully.

Who's here after Miucin returned?
I came here to find out more when Jim tweeted about him recently. What a complete knob this guy is. He should've kept his mouth shut.
Hell yeah lol
if he was stupid enough to plagiarise multiple different reviews, I am not surprised to hear that he came back to games journalism without thinking it through.
By FAR the most entertaining video I've seen on this guy. SAVAGE!! Nicely done.
Keep in mind that Jim may be, by his own admission, extremely fat, but so are _sumo wrestlers._ And they're absolutely not guys you want shoving you around either.
