    The place that AR's have arrived at, nice ambi controls, great triggers, and gentle recoil, direct impingement or piston, monolithic uppers, or excellent piece meal assemblies, budget 1 MOA accuracy, reliaibility that we never dreamed would be attainable, innumerable options for suppressors, optics mounting configurations, etc.

    Being left handed this is THE bullpup to own. The newest models have improved easy to reach selector switches. Problem solved. manticore arms sells a replacement buttstock reducing the LOP by 1”. Problem solved. Running a low mount red dot co-witnesses the flip up irons. Problem solved. The trigger isnt a Geissele SSA-E but it sure works for a working rifle. I love mine. Sold my AUG because $250 for a left handed bolt is silly and then a right handed person cant use it. I sold my X95 because sending it in to be converted to LH use is stupid and then it’s not usable for a right handed user. You have to go 1.93” or higher to get a usable cheekweld with the AUG and especially the X95, at least I did. I’m a VHSII fanboy and that’s my cross to bear. I still love my DD, SOL and Radian Rifles. The VHS scratches that “not an AR” itch and the Halo vibe is awesome.

      As a hellion aficionado myself, I want to butt in here and say the Magpul cantilever MAG587 does NOT clear the lip on the forend. I had to dremel mine out ever-so-slightly to make it flush to saitfy my flavor of autism. My other complaint is actually the heft. This thing is bulky and that makes it less appealing to shoot. And the trigger does kinda suck. It's not as bad as some striker-fired handguns IMHO, but still not as pleasant as a nice single stage AR trigger. I actually do like the length of pull, I'm a smaller fellow and I still run my AR stock at the longest setting so the hellion's shortest setting is perfect for me. The optics height is also kind of a non-issue for me. My cheek welding happens to work nicely with the offset height. I run an Eotech EXPS and have no issues. I have to readjust my head on my flat top Ar to get a good picture so I probably need a higher mount for the optic. I do hate that the lower 3rd Eotech is still too high to co-witness the backup irons through. That thoroughly annoyed me.

    The charging handle actually can function as a forward assist, and this is intended:
    Behind the lever that flips to both sides, there's a little metal tab. Pull the charging handle back so that it engages with the bolt, then you can push that little metal tab down so that it engages with the bolt, now you can push the charging handle forward as you need. The pressure will keep that little tab engaged to the bolt, so as soon as you let go the tab will move up again and disengage the charging handle from the bolt.

    Run the light strong hand side, mounted on a Magpul cantilever scout mount. The Magpul mount will sit just high enough to not interfere with the lip at the front of the handguard.
    Run the cable through the inside of the handguard. I used the Unity Modbutton lite, as it is slim enough to fit through the Mlok slots. Even better, i am using their new Link system version and the connector fit through the smaller vent slots. The 7in long cable worked well. I used one of the Magpul cable control clips to hold it in place. I am running an AFG and I was able to mount the clip where the AFG was covering, which prevented anything from sticking outside of the handguard.
    When using the AFG with one finger hooking around the front of it, and using the Unity Mlok mount... The Modbutton sits right under my thumb when I extend it forward rather than have a C-clamp grip.
    Great setup so far.
    I had plenty of good ARs, and wanted something different. The trigger doesn't bother me in use. It's a "shut up and shoot" kind of affair. I love my nice two stage AR triggers, and can be a trigger snob, but I'm not going to complain too much on this one.
    The safety was annoying so I got an aftermarket that fixes the issue. The factory safety has been changed, it is improved, and it is very good. Anything made in the past like 6 months should have the new safety.
    It is a bullpup with some bullpup quirks, but that is fine with me. I like it enough that it is my secondary go to rifle behind my decked out BCM.

    Having used mine, and yeah you're frustrations with the Hellion I have myself. The trigger is the main thing I have issues with, the recoil feels different but whatever.
    The length of pull is also an odd one to me, I keep it all the way in and just shoot it right-handed with right-hand eject. But I'm 6'1" so I would have expected to need more length of pull and I wish it had less. The one other thing is I wish the buttstock was something easy to replace with one that isn't as stiff. It's 5.56 so it's not a huge issue but it's just rock solid it feels like making shouldering it for a long time isn't the most fun experience in the world.
    The optics height was def an issue, but I am used to running a friend's AK so it isn't an issue long term and I like the more heads-up stance it asks for. The NGAL (I already had one laying around) I have with my Vortex Strike Fire (because I wanted to mess around with a cheap 1-6x to figure out which type I prefer between FFP and SFP). As for a tape switch, that is actually the one I have and the one I use, it just works for the grip the gun asks for. I also noticed the issues with the handguard and had come to the same conclusion for where it had to be placed.
    Overall I like it, and like you said if the cool factor is why (yep) it is nice, and I do want to get just a super basic AR-15, good parts, nothing fancy, something nice and brain dead reliable. 100% the Hellion was due to it makes me think of the Halo bullpups. It goes along well with my CZ-75 P-01, which is impractical due to price, weight, and the rarity of 15 round mag's for carry, which is why I'm getting a basic PSA Dagger Compact. And for a reliable do whatever rifle, a reasonable entry AR-15 that can take what I need it to have, a light, an red dot, and a sling.
    But I am glad to see my teething troubles with the Hellion aren't an individual thing, nor are they as bad some make them out to be. Gun is fun, it's alright, haven't had any super weird failures like your trigger but I'm only 500 rounds into it after having it since the start of March. But I do like how compact it is, its balance is a little weird when empty, but easier to lug around than my G3. Same with finding ammo for it that doesn't make me want to cry.

    Personal Review: Take the front end of a G36, weld it to the rear of a SCAR 20s, add 15% more recoil than a HK416, and make it a bullpup...for some reason. While the accuracy is pretty damn good, BF is not lying about the trigger pull (I wish he was). I tried tossing a magic in visible laser on to use for special see in the dark glasses, NO. Height over bore is a thing and Springfield really likes it. Oh, and trying to shoot a barricade is not a good time.
    Good things: You get the velocity of a long gun in a package that sorta fits in the "truck gun" size category. It can shoot a 10 string that measures around 1" at 100y. The suppressed setting works better than most other rifles. Due to the spread of the weight, the gun kinda feels lighter than it is. It looks pretty sweet and you feel like a Helldivers recruit when you run around with it.
    All in all, it's not a bad rifle but it is not a revolutionary new system. If you need velocity in a manageable package, this is a pretty damn good option. It also feels a lot like what a European would draw if you asked them what a scary automatic rifle 15 would look like, so that's a plus.

    Despite the hate it gets I still love my FS2000. It does everything I need it to do without sacrificing barrell length. I own several AR 15's one of which is a shortie, but I'm plenty comfortable with the FS2k manual of arms that I wouldn't hesitate using it in defense of myself or home. The forward ejection is a strength, at the sacrifice of slower reloads compared to the AR. I got mine long time ago. It's raised in price substantially. I can't complain :P From all the bullpups I've seen come out it's still the one for me.

    I honestly think in the case of a military service rifle nightvision compatability is actually a very valid point. Sure, not everyone is the us, but while nightvision is very much a stretchgoal for still probably close to 90% of serious civilian shooters, every military in the northern hemisphere issues nv to atleast some of its troops, so it should be a given that the modern standard service rifle in those countries is nv compatible. And i know, there are people who successfully set their vhs up for that, but with an lpvo at usable height, the only real option is the mawl and i feel like that is very limiting.
    It's a different story for countries that still use aks, if your rifle is basically 80 years old it's okay when you have to take some compromises, as long as there are decently capable ways to set it up. But the vhs is a relatively new rifle, at the time they developed that, they should've been already planning, with night use in mind

    The last point you made about premium price and premium feature, I think you glossed the fact that this rifle has the premium feature/performance of 1) Ambi controls, 2) Ambi ejection, 3) built in BUIS, rugged reliability, bullpup config for 16"/18"/20" barrel performance and decent accuracy. The extending stock is overlooked by many as useless, but its benefits are for offhand shooting to keep brass away, bench shooting, and people with certain physiques.

    • @BrassFacts
      @BrassFacts  3 місяці тому

      those are not premium features, those are just features.
      You just named something that basically every single bullpup can do, including the cheap ones 1000 dollar ones.
      Bullpups HAVE TO be able to be swapped in ejection otherwise a noticeable percent of the consumer base can't even buy it

    • @ryotatakuma6117
      @ryotatakuma6117 3 місяці тому +1

      Hey thanks for the reply man! Now partly true, but as a left hander myself I understand where you are coming from. Granted I have used most bullpups on the market, but here is my additional comment regarding this.
      Not all bullpups on the market has all of the exact features listed as what the Hellion can do, such as a true ambi charging handle/bolt/mag release, built flip up BUIS, and having a gun that can swap right to left ejection without the additional purchase of parts or sending the gun back to the manufacturer. Granted we know bullpup triggers aren't the best, but recent development by 3rd parties is showing promise in platforms like the AUG and a few upcoming for the Hellion (currently Bill Springfield can do a trigger job on the Hellion.)
      The Tavor SAR and TAVOR X95 both cannot be converted to left hand use unless you buy the parts and send the gun back to IWI to do the barrel change or you risk breaking the barrel lock part and the Tavor SAR has no swappable charging handle. Similarly, the AUG cannot swap charging handles and the AUG Nato is right hand eject only (with no bolt release) while the AUG Standard can be swapped, but requires you to buy a left hand bolt to work (+the bolt release is only on the left side which is awkward for us left handers). The FS2000 too is only a left hand charging handle design like the AUG and isn't as ambi as you'd like it to be with other quirks such as stanag magazine use only and no bolt release. Other bullpups such as the K&M M17s is all right hand use with no option for left hand conversion, and this goes for the same for every AR15 based bullpup kit such as the new AKB23 (L85 kit by Aly&Kauffman), Senex Arms MBLR15, A3 TRIAD, SRU TACTICAL AR15/JAKL/BRN180 kit, SCY REAP, AK bullpup kits and PSA's Jakl kit is all geared towards right hand eject only. The only bullpups that can offer a built-in swappable/ambi ejection, built-in swap charging handle and ambi mag release narrows down to the Hellion, Keltec RFB 308, Keltec RDB (but needs 3rd party right side bolt release part) TAVOR 7, MDRX/WLVRN, and PS90. Granted we know the MDRX is flawed so I can only suggest the WLVRN from Desert Tech to be the only premium rifle priced solution for what you are looking for, but the Desert Tech WlVRN still opted to use a polymer handguard that is 2 peice from the reciever so putting laser devices on the handguard will have a POA shift due to the handnguard flex so it doesn't solve all the problems in that design. The Hellion is really a gun that was designed and released shortly after the X95, so it wasn't as geared toward the modern day shooter of having IR/laser devices mounted on the gun's handguard and the Croatian military is seeing mounting the laser on the top of the carry handle with the tape running to the side. There is 1 individual working on a bi-level handguard for the Hellion to resolve that issue. The Hellion is not perfect, but for 1.6k when I got my 16" and 20" Hellion, it has a lot of the features I think was worth it and offered decent performance out of the box in terms of accuracy and reliability for me. I do have to again say the 16" Hellion you have is built more stiffer in the trigger area than the newer 18" and 20" Hellion, and the newer 16" Hellions with the updated selector lever. If you do see a newer Hellion at your LGS, try compare the trigger because it does feel slightly lighter (but more pronounced clacky noise). The perfect bullpup is still not on the market yet at the price point most general consumers can stomach. The Desert Tech WLVRN released recently has most of the good features you like, but has some sacrifices made such as the elimination of the forward eject, but the gun comes at a higher cost tag making it a bit out of reach for most folks wanting a gun that is as capable as an affordable AR15. As for us left handers, we are still a small market in the gun world sadly, and I agree most guns should be ambi by design, but it shows that there is more right handed folks in the market. The Beretta ARX100 was a solid concept for being truly ambi eject and controls, but it was not a bullpup and had issues with its quick detach barrel feature to retain zero.
