Tradition tug style narrowboat (what's it really like) | Narrowboat Experiences [4 of 4]

- It's important to talk about what really matters. Today on 'The Narrowboat Experiences' we talk to Margaret and Chris about living on a tug style narrowboat. They share their experience of buying 'Herbert' their 70 foot narrowboat tug, and what makes her a special narrowboat. Margaret and Chris both agree that one of the benefits of living on a narrowboat, or living this kind of life style is the benefits it has to their mental health. We have to agree with that!
Plus they have an adorable cat called Holly! What's not to like.

Margaret was talking about 'getting older on a narrowboat', and adapting the boat later on. I would like to see you interview long-time-boaters who are getting on in years. How are they coping with bridges and locks and gasbottles and so on. Thanks for this informative and personal info.
Thanks. We’ll see who we can find. Summer people are camera shy though.
@@TheNarrowboatExperience Why do you couple long-time-boaters/old-timers with summer people?
Agreed would love to see that too. There is a lovely couple on our pontoon who are in their eighties and live aboard. Anna and Kath, would you like us to speak to them to see if they would be willing? Chris and Margaret
@@charanvantijn541 probably just a typo, insert the word Some for Summer and it works well....
@@diaryofaherbert7423 Margaret, I missed your absolute best reason for living on a boat... is it the ducks, lol! I have Canada geese and mallards sleep on my pontoon every night, I guess I encouraged them by feeding them but its a joy to have them as my neighbours.... been on my boat since last july now and I feel so much different already....why it took me so long to get to this point is the only thing I would go back and do differently. Chris, what a lovely boat you have, I adore the tugdeck style.
Didn't Chris turn up on CCs Vlog 128?
What a beautiful boat, and a magnificent engine. I hope to buy a narrowboat in the next couple years. I would love to ask Chris to give advise on a good engine.
Thankyou for sharing.
What a beautiful Series came to an End. Thanks for all the insights into other peoples Boats. Good to hear that you already work on Season 2.
Watching your videos is good for my mental health xxxx
Thank you. I’m so glad
I love watching your videos. I am from Apache, Oklahoma. I usually watch on my firestick and I can't comment on that device, or I haven't learned how if it is possible.. I watch all your videos and my cats love to watch your videos and love you both and your cats. When I start the videos, the cats run in the room. You ladies are great. Its been hard this winter. without as many new ones so I went back and started watching your very first videos. I love them. If I lived in the UK I would get a narrowboat. Keep up the good work. Give Alice and Muchy a hug for me.
Thanks for commenting. I often watch UA-cam on my fire stick and have a similar problem. lol
This was most informative! It’s obvious that Chris is a proper boatman. Love the engine. Would like to hear it running. Look forward to meeting more narrow boaters!👍✌️😊🙏🏼
Hi TD, head over to the Diary of a Herbert You Tube page and you can hear Thumper in all her glory. Chris and Margaret
Diary of a Herbert I did right away. She’s a beauty and sounds wonderful!👍✌️😊🙏🏼
What a wonderful couple xx
A delightful couple--thank you for including us and sharing your life. Lots of interesting things and, among other things, its lovely to see all the beautifully-polished brass and copper! Well done!
YOU'VE DONE IT AGAIN GIRLS. I'V BEEN FEELING REALLY DOWN AND YOUR VID HAS HELPED ME FORGET MY PROBLEMS FOR AWHILE. THANK YOU SO MUCH , BLESS YOU BOTH AND THE KITTIES TOO.
Hope you are doing ok, glad we could help a little. x
@@TheNarrowboatExperience AS LONG AS YOU MAKE YOUR VLOGS , I KNOW EVERY SUNDAY I WILL FEEL A LITTLE BETTER.
Never fails. If I have a rough day, all I need to do is watch one of your video's. You Ladies have the most infectious, and pleasant attitudes, as well as personalities. And, even the worst days are made better watching your channel.
So glad we can help
I was wondering how the last couples cat adjusted to living on a narrowboat if she was an adult and how they managed to get her settled on it, when she moved from a house or was she a kitten when she made the move
She has always lived on a boat, she has her own spaces, usually my armchair! And has a very happy, comfortable life.
I recognise that boat and that engine, I am fairly sure that Chris has been interviewed by David of Cruising The Cut fame in the past?
He has, it was for the classic engines series!
That really is an impressive engine. After watching David of Cruising the Cut deal with cleaning around his engine, having it removed, scraping, painting, etc, this boat was a complete surprise. An engine ROOM instead of a space under the rear deck, is also very interesting. Lovely couple, and a lovely story. Thanks for sharing.
Swallows and Amazons FOR EVER! OMG my favorite series of books ever!
I'm slowly buying the whole set in audio books.
What lovely interesting people and what a beautiful cat! ❤️
She is beautiful.
Because that engine occupies their living space this was very different. Lovely couple and a A Times Goes By type love story of reconnecting. I think I'll watch it again.❤️❤️❤️
I enjoyed Chris & Margaret's story very much, and thank you both for arranging this with them :-) Good job ladies :-) x
OMG, the Boat and steam locomotive painting! Squeee!
I haven't had chance to read all of the 140+ comments to date so others may already have mentioned it but I simply loved the handily-placed gin bottle on the wall !! 1😎👍👍
You actually didn’t read the other hundred comments- how rude! lol.
To be honest Stephen, I was initially a little embarrassed that the first interior shot of the saloon area showed the gin bottle but hey ho, it was all about being honest. Chris and Margaret
Interesting vlog ,good to see a couple who are so satisfied with life. That engineis justa gorgeous museum piecea nd its so lovingly looked after by Chris it could run forever as long as Chris is around to pamper it.
Thanks for this
Thanks Ralph, although the engine was designed in 1928 it was actually built in 2006 but Chris does pamper her
This was not only a very open and interesting vlog, but for whatever reason, this was also extremely moving. The whole story from start to present time had a sincerity to it that was almost fairy tale like........ I'm one to those individuals stuck in the rat race, competing with everyone else in life, fighting for that last parking space in Tesco's, however at 60 this year I see very little changing. Circumstances are such that I love the idea of a boating life, but my nearest and dearest, would never warm to the idea of a liveaboard as a permanent thing. I would never put my own wishes ahead of anyone else's so I see us down sizing and hopefully getting a small bungalow with a bigger garden for our retirement. Thank you so much for your current series and I will pop over to see Margaret and Chris on their channel. Be safe.......
Thanks so much for your lovely comments. We are still partially on the hamster wheel as we work Monday to Friday and because of our choice to live where we do have a minimum three and a half hour return journey to work everyday so we take advantage of every possible weekend to get away from it all. I was 57 the first time I stepped aboard a narrowboat , just turned 60 now so please don’t let age put you off.
Of course the needs of your family will always come first so if you could perhaps consider a share boat to see if you can get them (onboard) with the idea. Alternatively, when you did downsize, you could maybe find something close to a canal so you can have the lovely walks and maybe help out with locks, I’ve found it a great way to meet and chat to people. Margaret
@@diaryofaherbert7423 Thank you, and I really do wish you all the very very best.
Great vlog girls, loved it x
Thanks
Lovely series, thank you. If they are missing sirens on Herbert, can I recommend the basin in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Hi Paul, trust us we do not miss the sirens, they were one of the reasons we moved from out previous mooring in Reading.Chris and Margaret
Sorry didn’t catch the FB address for Herbert can you let me know please great clip luv the engine mine is all brass as well Gardener 2L2 luv them

@@TheNarrowboatExperience Thanks
Gday again from Australia can you tell us please whats happened to Jono xx
I was wondering this too. Is he ok?
He explains on his facebook page that his is working for victron
Thank you. Always interesting to hear other people's experiences.
Cheers.
Thanks Jane. Chris and Margaret
Really interesting couple and looks like Herbert is a great boat. I love that engine. How are you girls doing with he virus and all? I have been thinking about you and sending positive thoughts.
Thanks David, she is a cracking engine. Chris and Margaret
I really look forward to your videos
Thanks
Hey thank you for sharing that’s awesome ❤️👍🙏☮️💪
Certainly hope you keep this series going I enjoy learning about other people's boats also!
Thanks ladies, hope to see on the cut soon. 😀🐾
Definitely. We need a holly Munchy Alice play date.
I missed what Margaret's absolute best reason for living on a boat was...... I shared Chris's desire to own a boat for years as well.... x
Yes... Margaret might tell you if she remembers...
Just found this question. Best thing about living in a narrowboat is that it takes no time at all to do your housework 😀
I know how he feels about that engine, I got my dads old car, I love that engine,
Reading some of these comments, I’m beginning to think that the NHS should offer tinkering with engines instead of antidepressants. Margaret
The life i would love to live, i do a lot of wildcamping in forests and woodlands and on the beach, down here on the Isle of Wight it is perfect to get away from the hussle and bussel of modern life by losing yourself in a tranquil forest...atb..jeff.
Great video, great boat and lovely couple.
Best wishes.
what a lovely couple. Another great informative video ,enjoyed it immensely. Well done you two. H
Nice to see another quality boat from rugby boats.i got my boat from them.
Thank you all, this is such a heartwarming chat with Margaret and Chris. Take care xx
Thanks Christine, we loved doing it. Kath and Anna were so lovely. Chris and Margaret
This was a delightful interview, and a wonderful account. You all have such terrific people as fellow narrow boat owners.
Very interesting Yay for season two.
If you go back on Herbert again make sure you run that gorgeous vintage engine, lovely couple and another enjoyable video
Beautiful couple, lovely boat - Thank you for this video.
I think Chris was on a "cruising the cut" video explaining his wonderful engine. I too like being woken up by the dawn chorus.
You’re right Roger Thumper ( yes we named our engine!) was featured on ,cruising the cut. Chris and Margaret
Fantastic boat and video
What a nice boat and lovely people
Hi, is your boat a Springer ?
Nice one girls , very good videos
Fantastic video love it
Thank you for the great video. What a moving story, I am in a similar situation to the one Margaret was. My partner is buying a narrowboat (it won't be ready till 2021) and I will have to decide if I want to live on it. It would not only mean relocating from one town to another but from another country to UK!
My plan is to spend blocks of 2-3 weeks living on it before I decide. See how we manage to be in such close quarters all the time as we have never officially lived together. For now, we are navigating the distant relationship challenge...
Hi MunichStar73, you are absolutely doing the right thing by spending time on the boat before making your decision. I can honestly say that even being cooped up together throughout lockdown when we couldn’t go anywhere or see anyone else, it was still the best decision I ever made. When space is at a premium, it makes you realise that people and relationships are what’s important not material things. I really hope it works out for you both and we get to see you on the cut next year. Margaret
I was a little puzzled by one of the comments: Chris mentioned going to reception to check the post. This implies they have a residential mooring in a marina. So how come they can say that they have a different view every day? Surely that only comes with continuous cruising?
Hi Alan, you raise a good point and we can’t wait till we can continuous cruise; however, the weather changes, the seasons change, our local wildlife changes, ducklings, cygnets and other birds are born and then move on - which is also something our neighbours in the marina do. So while we may remain in one location from Monday to Friday the view does change every day. Margaret and Chris
Lovely series I've really enjoyed it...clever you for thinking of it so many interesting people...pleased you are doing another series about all these wonderful folks
So glad you liked it.
Hi Chris, Margaret and Holly hope all is well there, loved the video, hope to be back soon. I can tell you he is telling the truth when he says it takes about an hour to get the mail, many a time my Cris has said where have you been you’ve been gone for an hour! I say getting the mail, getting wood or cleaning the toilet and saw such and such. Stay safe all of you there.
Thanks Colin
Fabulous vlog ladies. Thankyou so much to you both and to Margaret and Chris for taking part and being so honest and open. I am on the way over to Chris' channel right now! Ian
Thanks Gone Googling, we guarantee if you like big engines, lots of brass and gin then you will enjoy diary of a Herbert. Chris and Margaret
Great Vlog girls
Well done guys
Such a beautiful and interesting life story.
I agree
What a beautiful engine room!
We agree!
Outstanding interview. Thank you for sharing😊😊😊😊😊
👍👌👏 Simply fantastic!
Thanks a lot for making teaching recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all involved life forms (humans and animals (
Chris looks like an old viking !
Hi Moe, I call him my Viking 😉
Top!!! Thanks a lot and watch out 😷for undesirables viruses 🦠
Really enjoyed this.....i like hearing peoples story's why they decided to live on a boat
This was wonderful! Thank you...greetings from 🇨🇦
Good job again! Thanks, very entertaining. 👍👍😁😎
What a beautifully presented video, ladies. Thank you. Your work just gets better and better - from cruising to 'Through the Hedge', to this short series. Always a joy. :-)
very good production guys I enjoyed this story, John ..NZ kai-ora
What sweet people! Thank you!! 😁 😁 😁
They really are
Thanks 1911olympic. Chris and Margaret
Thank you for your great series. Can’t wait for the next installment. Just thinking about you two and trusting you are well and safe. Take care, cheers from Canada. R&D
Great series! Very much enjoyed it! Be safe, ladies! Chin scritches for Alice and Munchie for me, please!
For me I'm mostly interested in the views along the canal. So beautiful. Still I enjoyed this. I don't have a canal but I live in the woods. No sirens. I can't hear most vehicles on our little road. Lots of birds songs. An occasional moose passing through. More rare a few bears over 40 years.I understand mental health. If I was made to live in town I'd just fade away.
Well that was amazing girls it's just so weird when as "watchers" all of a sudden an unexpected blog pops up out of nowhere on the videos you might like
Batton down the hatches girls, looks like more and heavy rain on the way. Should arrive in about 5 hours. Sleep tight.
Wonderful video. Thanks so much for doing this series and I’m looking forward to more. Only firms up my own resolve to get home and make this my way of life too.
Brilliant series looking forward to series 2......thanks for sharing
And thank you and those you featured for these four video's.... Looking forward to season two.
You said it all, great, thanks for sharing 🇩🇰👍😘
Really interesting series thanks for putting it together. Would love to know what other people do for work whilst continuously cruising.
What a lovely video, thanks for sharing with us all 🛥🛥
FI truly enjoyed this little series that you did! I hope you will continue to do so , it's very interesting!
Yes, loved it.... and will be subscribing...
What a great couple. Nice finish to the series. Keep up the good work ladies.
That was a great interview. Thanks for sharing...Vic
Loving these interviews and different perspectives. Thanks, friends!
thats a russell newbery , on a tug style you found it the last one ,hang on there's a prize here somewhere , oh here it is a commision for a Herbert Drawing coffee mug transfer with a drawing of the engine ,, hmm thats a lot for mug size ,, hmmm any ideas ??
Clearly there is a pride of ownership. Nice way to end the series!!
Great video. What a nice couple!
Love what you are doing, Ladies.🇦🇺👍🙏. No longer coming over. Corona virus.😪😪😪
Sorry you’re plans have changed. Stay safe
Interesting story how people live their lives !!!
Nicely done ladys
Thank you
Really lovely video, thanks!
I'm a new subscriber to your channel and love your videos. This one is particularly good as I suffer terrible with mental health problems.
My self esteem is always pretty low and I'm always in fear of rejection. So thank you for cheering my days up.
Have you seen Colin and Shaun the Foxes Afloat guys, they cover this subject excellently.
Welcome aboard. You are very welcome here.
Thank you very, very much for this series.
What nice people? And I love 'Herbert', especially that immaculate engine room. I am an engineer and appreciate that sort of thing, but I'm not sure I'd have the patience to keep it so spotless. Oh, and I wouldn't have 'hurricane lamps'; I'd have the real man's lamp, some Tilley lamps!
The rest of the boat has, what I would describe as, 'an old signal box feel' (the phrase just came in to my head - sorry) but it is clearly an all 'mod con' home. Very nice. Couldn't handle the 'sleeping under the tug deck, though - I'm already too old! Great vlog as usual girls.
Thanks for your kind words Roger, spookily Chris is in the process of acquiring a Tilley lamp and is always talking about getting a set of Class 37 horns (demountable) - can you imagine hearing that coming towards you as you approach a bridge or junction.
another wonderful vlog! Thank you, appreciate these friendly intimate newsy stories.
Thanks, glad you like them
Another top-notch documentary of the people on the water. Are you two considering becoming more storytellers, aside from your own stories from life afloat? You've both grown as storytellers/filmmakers in the past two years. (I speak from a background of a dozen years writing/directing/producing hundreds of television commercials and industrial films and video for a range of clients big and small) You're both able to focus in on the real story and that is rare to see. Well done!
We don't just want to give our own perspective all of the time, it feels a bit narcissistic. So thank you for your compliments, we are touched and very proud that you said those kind things.
Wonderful series, very heartwarming. What a wonderfull way of life, and pusscat too ! Purŕrfect 🤗🐱
Thanks Yvonne, Life aboard Herbert wouldn’t be the same without Holly. Chris and Margaret
I'd like a Herbert, what a beautiful narrowboat. Great couple and fully open. Love the idea of "fairy paw prints" on the engine.
Rob, we love ‘fairy’ paw prints, think Chris said furry but we like your version much better 😀Chris and Margaret
That is a beautiful Russell Newbury engine and, while I might be inclined not to worry over it, he seems to love polishing it to a spit shine. I’m sure that work and the scenery along the canal help keep one from having mental health problems. Engines are not as capricious as people can be. Of course, Holly must help keep their sanity the way Munchy and Alice keep yours. Those of us who do not have canals to live on keep our sanity by watching videos like these. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, I think polishing is his therapy, he can be in the engine room for hours. You are so right about Holly though, at his darkest times when I was still living in the north east, it was her that kept him going.
Yay, I took it to 1000 likes! I loved this little series you put together. It's been wonderful listening to other narrowboaters stories. My one concern is vandalism and anti-social behaviour. I remember an incident with Jono when kids run across his roof at 2.00am! It would be interesting if this is a rare thing or not, because otherwise, it seems so idyllic. Hoping you girls are keeping safe during this virus panic. Please stay safe and keep well.
Yes, I hear or read of things, but we have always been fine. We are pretty safety conscious and I think sometimes women just learn early on in life to look out and trust that gut feeling. So if it feels like not the right place to stop we don't. We are ok for now during the pandemic, but thank you for asking. x
Easy to say a great video, but that does not really cover it. I think heart warming is closer, the fact a couple have lost each other due to troubles but are drawn back together. Fantastic engine room Chris ..... would a guess at you being ex services be in the right ball park?
Hmmm
