  • I bought this Leica SL2 to shoot my professional work with and to film these UA-cam videos, but it's become one of my favorite cameras I've ever owned. Here are some thoughts on using the camera for personal work and carrying it everywhere I've gone for the last month.

    Great review Matt. Love the fact that you are sharing the WHY and not just the how. I invested in a Leica Q2 4 months ago (also made a video about it) and. I must admit the simplified shooting experience, image quality and “feel” of the camera in the hands got me interested in the SL system. What’s your favorite lens on the system?

    Just swapped my beloved Leica 262 and an m7, as well as a Leica focomat ii enlarger for an sl2-S and a Carl Zeiss m mount 28mm lens with adapter. It was an impulsive decision but imam so happy I did. Absolutely incredible canera. 👍🏽👍🏽 AF assist! Mamamia! I was one of those people who had trepidation of moving to an EVF, but it's incredible. I still use my contact Rx with Contax lenses and there is a CY/L adapter so I can use my lenses on the SL2S. Happy days.

    Nice review . I use my SL2S with a Pany lens , TL lenses from my CL and my M lenses .So versatile . Been at it for fifty something years and this is one of the nicest set ups which I`ve used .The SL2s low light capability is very welcome here in the UK especially at this time of year .However I wish it had phase detect .... they missed a big trick there .

    The SL2 is my dream camera. I bought the Lumix S1 instead, with the Lumix 50mm S Pro lens. It is a real joy to use, but it will never reach the excellent ergonomics of the SL2. You can program one of the unmarked buttons on the SL2 to give you an instant depth of field preview, it is just not programmed by default. Every button except the shutter button can be reprogrammed in the menu. This also works with the 50mm S Pro lens. The size and weight of the SL2 (and the Lumix S1) are perfectly balanced with L mount lenses, while M mount are not so much. Although M mount lenses work perfectly well, just without the autofocus.
    It took me a long time to switch from an optical viewfinder to a digital one, I bought my S1 only last year coming from a Nikon D610. The Leica SL from 2015 was the first camera where I found the viewfinder to be really good, it has pretty good color reproduction and sharpness is very good. It was way too expensive for me though, and there was not much choice in lenses. This SL2 (and the SL2-S, Lumix S1 and S5) have even better EVFs, with these there is absolutely no reason now to avoid them in favour of optical evfs. That is still not the case with all Nikon, Canon and even Sony evfs, the evf on the SL2 is the best in my opinion. Lens choices on L mount are still not on par with Sony or Canon, although it is getting better and better. The most needed lenses are available now (24-105, 14-24, 70-200, this 50mm prime, other 24, 35 and 85 primes, they are all there).

    Matt, thanks for a great review. I'm looking at using a 50mm m mount on an SL but I'm torn between the SL2 or SL2s. Living in the UK the light is poor most of the year which makes me want the lower res option as I'll be using it for street but it will also be working alongside a Q and will be used also for portraits making the larger resolution more useful. First World problem but any advice would be welcomed.

    Your decision 7 months ago to get away from camera reviews and focus on making photos that you love was a great decision. There have been several channels that instead of focusing on the process or art of photography, have gone to reviewing high end cameras and lenses, that a majority of their subscribers can't afford or don't need, to get more clicks from gear heads. I'm glad that you made the conscious decision to keep your videos focused on the photos and not the gear that is used to make the photos. Keep up the great work.

    Hi Matt, very useful, many thanks for sharing! One question: you mentioned focus-peaking. Can you do that in the SL/SL2 with a MF lens? My understanding was that to focus with a Leica M-lens (not sure about non-Leica M lenses), first the camera has to recognise that a MF lens has been inserted, then you "register" it for exactly what is is through the SL2 internal menu (which has a databank of many Leica MF lenses), and then, to actually focus with it, the only assistance by the camera is that when you turn the focus ring, the camera automatically zooms-in 200% so you can "see" what is in focus. According to Leica's videos, because of the very bright and clear viewfinder, this becomes second nature after a while and MF is pretty fast and accurate. But they don't mention focus peaking (which would also be great, if it's actually available). Can you confirm/elaborate a bit on this, and more generally, what method do you use to manual focus and how hard/easy did you find it to adjust from the rangefinder focusing to the SL2 MF focusing? Many thanks!!

      @mattdayphoto  3 роки тому +2

      For whatever reason, I’ve always preferred a 50mm when I’m looking through the lens and a 35 on a rangefinder. I truly don’t know why this is, but it’s how it’s been for me since I first got my M6! 35 just feels perfect while a 50 on an SLR just makes sense.

    This would be the MAIN reason why I would buy a SL2 ever (although I would go for the S version) adapting those M lenses, new and vintage, and benefit from the Viewfinder with Focus peaking (although it could be a bit better) , the WYSIWYG DoF aperture view in combination with the quality of those M mount (vintage) lenses.

I am very tempted by SL2 and SL2S, would you still go SL2 or would you go for the SL2S if you did not already have the SL2?. I bought a Leica Visoflex (Typ020) to go on my M10P when I bought a super elmar 18mm (amazing lens), but beyond that having an EVF is so much more effective for B&W than trying to work with liveview on the screen. Now I find I use it sometimes with other lenses.

      Dual Pixel AF is definitely better, there’s no denying that. Contrast detect AF feels a bit behind, but that being said, I’ve used my SL2 and LUMIX lenses at weddings and have never missed focus on a critical shot or missed a moment. It might be that I’m extra heightened on anticipating things because I know my AF is just a tad bit slower, I don’t know. Have shot with Leica M's and now use a Nikon Z. Something you didn't mention is that the rangefinders allow you to see outside of the frame (as long as you don't shoot 28mm or wider, which would fill the viewfinder), which helps with finding the optimal composition. Otherwise I have to say I really enjoy the experience of a nice EVF.

    Does the SL2 have a lot of vignetting with wider M lenses? I ask, because I’ve adapted M lenses to my Eos R and anything less than 50mm has plenty of vignetting.

      I had an eos r with a summicron m 35mm asph and sold the eos r for this reason, the corners where soft and had purple vignette. When using the same lens on my Sl type 601 its perfect.

      I’m in opposite position as you - I have the A9 and all the high tech focusing is lost on me (I’m an old school center focus and recompose guy). I am looking to trade to an SL2S for the build quality and overall feel of the system. I constantly move dials and buttons on the A9 accidentally, and I guess I’m just no longer willing to do the menu dive on the Sony. I wish they would come out with a retro simplified version of their A7 series, like the Nikon Df. Sony really is an industry leader in technology advancement but they need to spend a few days in a Tesla or an Apple store to get the user experience side of things.

Some people like to see the whole scene through the viewfinder whereas I prefer to drown out everything other than what is in my frame.

    Hey Matt, thanks for sharing this video. I DM'd you a while back asking you if you have had any issues with the Leica L to M adapter. The one I had would not make a proper connection when using M mount lenses, I would get a message saying the lens was not recognized. Anyhow, I ended up returning it and picking up a cheap Fotasy brand M mount and has worked fine so far with my SL2. I think you used one for a while, obviously the built quality is not up to par with the Leica but I'm wondering if it will hold up after extended usage and if you ever noticed any differences between them at all . Love the channel. Cheers.

      Hey man! Sorry I missed that DM, I try to answer as many as I can but they inevitably slip through the cracks sometime. I used a Fotasy branded one when I first got my SL2 and it never gave me any issues, but I picked up the Leica one because my lenses are 6 bit coded and that adapter will read it for EXIF data, lens profiles, etc. Just a convenience thing!

    • @Anthonylarz
      @Anthonylarz 3 роки тому

      @@mattdayphoto Interesting, your A/B camera plan. But it occurs to me, the SL2-S has a lot better low light capability, and 24mp is of course more than enough unless you really want to crop etc, it seems that IF one has low light performance as a priority to their shooting, the SL2-S could easily be the A cam for photography. That is my plan, as I love shooting in low light. Thoughts? I am about to pull the trigger on a SL, with very little interest in video (more shooting photos with Leica glass) and I am going for the SL2-S.

    It is funny that you say you get through a day with the battery while a lot others are complaining about it, I guess it shows that different use produces different amount of time.
    The SL2 is definitely something I am looking forward to buy sooner or later, maybe used and with M-Mount lenses but rather from Voigtländer and L-Mount-Sigma as combination and really later for Leica M lenses.
    The look and feel is part of the experience, plus the 47mp I like for landscape stuff and the versatility to easy adapt use Leica M lenses if the budget is there.
    Mostly I use manual focus, but to dive into rangerfinder for a couple of thousands is more a risk as to use a SLR, also I love my APSC 50-140 and I like telephoto lenses as well.
    I guess the SL2 is the best hybrid for my manual focus love but also the possibility to use sooner or later SIGMA telephoto lenses.
    But the battery is a concern and of course you pay the Leica price.
    But well I don't have GAS, it is just on the wishlist to purchase sooner or later.
