Man please keep making videos, these are killer. Spent the last few days just rewatching your videos over just to look at these photos + the info on the gear. Definitely changed my opinion on all things leica and can totally see their value now. Also read the articles on your blog and they're incredibly helpful I can't thank you enough
Hi, I also own some Leica-R lenses and I think about buying an SL2-S. How is your experience with focus (and peaking) in general on the SL2-S with manual lenses? Is it fast and accurate through the EVF? Thank you.
@@elbanzo8110 Its all just fantastic! Yes, the EVF-focus peaking of the SL2-S combined with the R lenses works perfectly! You will be sooooo happy. It is a tremendous experience. I have five R lenses. Even with the R 100 macro lens, it works very very well. Enjoy!
@@elbanzo8110 ha!!! You are going to LOVE the SL2-S / R lens combinations! I have been doing photography for 50 years and it is the best photographic experience (lens, camera combination) of my life . . . in every way . . .
my favourite R lenses have been the 180 elmarit, and the 100 elmarit macro . . just incredible . . . and with the in camera stabilisation, the focus peaking and the super low light performance combinations . . .I am even getting remarkable hand held macro results!
Great video Andrew. This video was a the main push for me purchasing an sl2-s. I bought the Sl2-s kit with 24-70 but I love shooting my Zeiss 50 planar zm or my voigtlander 35 1.7 because it's just a wonderful experience and I get wonderful results. As you mentioned in thebvideo, the evf is amazing. Great luck with your yt channel (I subscribed)
@@GenericPhotographer I would be super curious to hear your thought on the SL2-S for lowlight and lowlight street photography. Would it be worth giving up the SL2's extra megapixels just for lowlight? Would you feel that it allows you to feel more creative, capable, etc.?
Love the 3-shot composite of the Mazda partway through... I'm heading to Montreal next month and will most definitely drop-in to see the folks @ Camtec!
Thanks Daniel! Awesome, enjoy your time in Montreal, I’m sure the guys at camtec will be happy to see you. They’ve got a lot of gems on display there as well ;)
Great video. I am thinking of getting a used SL as my gateway into Leica cameras. I would use it mostly with manual focus glass so this video was very helpful. Thanks. Also nice to see a fellow Canuck on the screen.
I had missed this one. I sometimes look at the SL2, which seems to be an interesting camera to complement an M, as you mentionned in your conclusion. But for now my arsenal will be limited to a M10 and a Q2. Maybe someday. Thanks.
Great video! I have Leica CL with M type lens as well as vintage lens with a variety of adapters. The Leica works great with manual lens. I am sure the SL2 or SL2s works similar to my CL. I have my function button set to ISO so I can manual set the ISO.
Thanks for the video! I wanted to share that I also have an M10 and an A7R2. BUT an A7R4 as well and that is a massive massive upgrade. So if you want a truly inspiring Sony experience, try an A7R4 with the new 35mm 1.4 GM. 🥰
Great video ! I have both M and SL2-S, and I prefer using M glass on with the SL. Easier focussing esp. with longer focal lenght, plus IBIS. Could not agree more !
I use ten Leica M lenses on a Nikon z5 (which I purchased strictly to get entry to the matchless f/0.95 Noct lens). The results with the M lenses on a Novoflex adapter are mind blowing and I have to say shocked me. For 1200 bucks! I have seen no images posted from an M/SL2-S combo that match or exceed what I get with the z5. That said, I still want an SL2-S! :-)))
Great review on using M lenses on the SL. As I understand it, you have to use the original Leica M to L adapter to get the ability to move the magnified point around, which you don’t using third party adapters. Do you know anything about that?
I can't comment on that as I only have experiences with the Leica adapter. Which, depending on your vendor is usually included with the sale of the camera these days. Sorry I can't be of more help
Thanks for sharing and your info. My experience with shooting with manual leica lenses with non M cameras: I do jobs on canon gear, however for my street photography, I use leica lenses mated to a fuji xt3. A note on your underexposure to retain highlight: I found my workflow in fuji street photography one where I really try getting out of camera jpgs a priority to avert processing. Fuji film sims make it even more of a motivation in that if offers a finished subjective “look” in camera. Shooting in NY’s tall building required hilight retention techniques due to the extremes in shadow by buildings, yet full sun. So underexposing images not only messed with photography workflow, but post processing as well. The worst was dark underexposed jpgs! In comes fuji’s dr 400, an extended dynamic range. Bad news: minimum iso is 640, and you lose some shadow latitude. Good news: you shoot normal and retain hilight detail, and works in RAW!!!! It works by making you increase the iso to 640 to allow your camera more room to process the amplification phase of the processing . It decreases the amplification of only the highlights of your image in order to protect them. Then it uses the selected iso of 640 to amplify the shadows (hence the more noise) as well as some of the midtones. Basically the highlights are processed with a lower iso while the shadows and midtones are processed with a higher iso all in a single shot!!! No shutter limits. This all happen before the image is sent to the analog to digital converter, hence why it works in raw! This was a game changer with my street photography where i can be a photographer again and not a digital alchemist; where i had to change my photography (underexpose) my photos to circumvent digital sensor shortcomings… ending up with dark photos! UA-camr pal2tech demonstrates this beautifully and shows raws! ua-cam.com/video/RjjCa73XxsY/v-deo.html

interesting video, am considering purchasing the leica SL2-S rather than the SL2. my understanding is that the only major difference is a 24 megapixals sensor rather than the 47 megapixals on the SL2. my question is can I also, with, using the correct adapter, use any of the leica M manual lenses on the SL2-S camera body. ...... zen billings, niagara region.
I thought i would ask you something, i have a sl3 and every time i switch af lens to m lens I loose all camera settings is it normal? Thanks for your reply
I love Leica as well. I switched from the SL2 to SL2s for its better low light ability. Having 24mp is more than enough for me. Also like you in the video, Leica and Subaru go well together eh?
With the SL2 is there an option to turn the screen off and is there an option to turn the constant preview (in viewfinder) off? This is how I try to shoot mirrorless bodies to make them feel more like film ect.
I have a7iii with techart and two M lenses, voigt 40 mm 1.2 and zeiss zm 50 mm f2. Fantastic lenses both of them. The 50 mm f2 is very very close to the fantastic 50 gm ( at f2). So when I want a compact camera with a 50mm fov, I take the zeiss.
Do you have to recompose the photo when zooming in on the EVF to focus with the SL2 (or can you quickly select a zone to focus in on and then just shoot)? I have the M10P and love it, but my eyes are getting older and shallow depth of field is tougher to nail.

@@GenericPhotographer Nikon z9 screen looks great. Having said that, not having the option for a tilting screen was a no-go for me with the SL2-S. Especially for video work.
