I love these kinds of videos slow and simple
Looks like a lot of effort. I sure would not think about making very many of them. But the one you did looks very nice. One would certainly be worth the effort. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Nice project.
Great for grandkids!
Hey @BlackBear love your channel, Just a thought but something I did for my own air powered treadle sledge is I made a fixture (simple mild steel) that fits on my anvil face like a saddle- On that saddle I mounted a guide roller and spring to keep a chisel in line vertically and stop any side to side movement. The spring is set to keep the chisel (which I drill a pin hole and pin into for the spring) anywhere from 1/2" to 1-1/2" off the anvil face. That way I have both hands free to work my material much like a sewing machine with fabric. Beauty is by doing it this way you can lift the fixture off the anvil and no modifications are nessecary for the treadle hammer. Once I came up with that it excelled my detail work exponentially. Hope you can use that, love your work and take care sir!
This is an amazing idea. Seriously that's genius. Did you put it together like a guillotine tool for the guide?
You just gave me so many ideas thank you this is genius
You should do a video on it's fabrication this is brilliant. 👍🏻
Great idea👍🏻
@@NewAgePug I made it to keep the work area accessable to move around the material, the only part that's inaccessible is one direction that holds the arm which holds the spring. But that arm is directly in line with the sledge so there is no wasted space.
Soup can lids are great for this, especially if you're working with kids. You can cut through with a chisel, but also use nails to punch through and create designs similar to what they did on old tin lanterns. If you have kids involved, painting the finished pieces can be a blast as they get their creative juices flowing. Just make sure to coat the whole thing really well with a polyurethane or similar to trap in the glitter! And, yes, I've been advised that you absolutely must use glitter.
Thank you for that suggestion! 🌺
@@Aco747lyte Glad to help. Those little nail files women use are very good for getting in the nooks and crannies to take off any sharp edges and burrs. If you have kids "helping" make ornaments, be prepared to have glitter all over your shop. Kids are great fun, but very messy creatures!
Lovely! Slow and steady does it... And a tredle hammer ;)
You got that right!
Thats a beautiful project! Finally, a use for those old refrigerator doors; A nigh endless supply of very thin sheet metal!
Beautiful snowflake. Paper method was cool.
Glad you liked it!
This is a cool Christmas shuriken
And here is another work of iron art, and I'm going to make this next weekend! Annabelle, one of my teen daughters is wonderful at enamel work and said she'd love to decorate it with some metallic enamel. I'm sure she's going to busy because Molly just texted me and said she'll be making some. Ahh, John you inspire many, including my girls and I thank you. Wendi 🌻
Love this idea 💡 John for a Way of get kids involved in what we do as smiths 😊 thank you for showing off the treadle hammer kit for me! I really appreciate your perspectives and hope the kit will help some folks out ❤️🔥 merry Christmas everyone
Merry Christmas
That turned out Great John, it looks like a great project!
Thanks 👍
If I have time I might try making one or more of these as Christmas presents! Thanks for sharing this! You’re videos are always both fun and informative! :)
I like the idea! I would like an inline treadle hammer like yours, but have no budget. I guess I will have to sell a few things first.
GREAT IDEA. My wife and I have 2 grandsons that would really find this project to be inspiring. The BRASS brushing idea would look great too! Another fantastic video! Thanks, John.
Definitely could use some Happy Elves for that finish file work !!🥴
Totally!
.....and dipping the hot in virgin olive oil will give them a gorgeous gloss
Really neat project! Lots n lots of hand work. I can see where a treadle hammer would come in handy! Roy's @ $700 w the air assist is a great option i do believe....now to find some cash hiding under a bush. Lol. Anyhow yours turns out quiet nice! Differential torch heating can bring a rainbow of colours to the snowflakes or brass brush. Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo many options!
Blessings Mr John
Crawford out 🙏🏻🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️
Nice hat at the beginning 😁
You genius! Thanks so much for this video!
I would without question lean over the snowflake too much and clobber myself with the air hammer. No doubt about it.
Lovely!
Really nice, John.
Bill
👍nice work
Never did the snowflake cut outs as a kid, still fun projects. Have a wonderful week. 👏👏👏
Very cool. My step son want to try this.. he is on his way to being my little helper. We do alot of cold projects, dog tags with letter punches and stuff like that.. Speaking on being more comfortable in the shop, has anyone ever seen the lap anvil that Holland tooling has for sale? That thing looks a tad dangerous lol!
Metal snowflakes......cool, very cool! You have done another very nice job ! Thx for sharing. God bless you.
I think I may just make a few ot these Bear Dude! TFS, GB :)
John very beautiful design there. I really enjoyed this video. Really cool project there. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge On. Fab On Weld On. Keep Making. God bless.
Looks great John, lots of great ideas with your tools and working out those snow flakes. Turned out really great. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
Glad you enjoyed it
It turned out really cool and will certainly be a part of every Christmas for years to come.
Simply love it, good idea to do this together with the kids!
That's cool!
Cool idea. Thanks for sharing
Imagine snow flake like this drop on your head
Great Christmas gift idea 💡. Thanks for the lesson, keep up the good work and God bless you and your family 👪. And Merry Christmas as well.
Merry Christmas
Hi John, excellent video as always. I thought of you while watching the last episode of Rings of Power Season One, on Amazon Prime. They have an incredible scene of blacksmithing tools, Forge and various other implements while they Forge and then Smith the three rings. If you haven't, and have access it's definitely worth a watch! Their non marring hammer is made from bone!
Hello John
You looks good with your New Hat on 😉😉.
The cristals are a very good idea.
Thank you for the Video
Have a good First Advent and a peacefull time .
Greetings from Germany
Yours Frank Galetzka
Thanks, you too!
Hi John, I remember making paper snow flakes in school, a former member of the club Jim Hovanec introduced us to Kirigami a form of Origami where we cut snowflakes by folding the metal, cut the shapes and unfold and hammer out. Either way involves a fair amount of hand work. When I first saw the thumbnail I thought you might have reworked one of Roy's blanks?
Roys blanks would be the easier way to go.
@@BlackBearForge I just checked out Roy's blanks, he has 4 different ones, but none like the one you made.
✌🏼🙋🏼♀️👍🏻✨️SUPER!
vert jolly
Looks like a project I could gear up and do. About what gauge steel did you use or would be good for this project? On film it seems to have lots of depth and looks thicker than I'm guessing it really is.
This is probably 16 gauge. The depth is a side effect of cutting with a chisel.
Hey, I have one of those Clay Spencer inline treadle hammers and I'm curious if you know of any resources or places I can look to find making it pneumatic like you'd mentioned? Or perhaps do a video at some point on converting yours and maybe a bit of the info on it?
Love your content and videos, it's been a massive inspiration since I started!
I haven't seen any plans. But if I get it figured out I'll try to do a video
Very cool. I'm gonna try this out, with a bit of a twist. @blackbearforge, do you mind if i clip this video a little for my own snowflake video?
When you get the specs for the air assist treaddell will you please share those so I can modify mine.
There is a beautiful metal snowflake, but what about a metal Christmas tree?
I do have something in mind
Forgive me if someone else asked. But what gauge material are using Thank you,
This was 16ga
I have an anvil that is in rough shape. I would like to weld a block of steel on the top of it. What would be a good steel for this?
Probably 4140, but it will be lots of work to get a good weld.
Thanks
John, what is the weight of your rolled rawhide mallet? Thanks.
I have a 2 pound and a 3 pound
they look like posj ninja stars we werent allowed to make at school. ;) naruto
Did you make the chisels in that roll or is that available commercially?
They are all shop made. I should have several videos on making similar tools.
Oi, have you got a license for that snowflake?
