What i like in this shot is that we can see the difference in technique, Alec mostly moving his waist back n forth , Joe more of a ¨squatting¨ motion when hammering.Interesting.

If you do Alec, you should make each point a different steel , and merge them into a twist Damascus center bit where the handle inserts. That'd be cool

    • @xaytana
      @xaytana 6 років тому

The Trident of Poseidon/Neptune is just a fish spear; more specifically an arrow-headed triple pronged fork, which was used by Mediterranean fishermen to catch eels. According to a proposal, Poseidon's trident is derived from Zeus' Lotus Scepter, meaning the Trident is more of a staff as opposed to a tool or weapon.
Another proposal says that the Trident, and Zeus' Thunderbolt were originally sacred labrys, but later distinguished when Poseidon became god of the sea and Zeus claimed the Thunderbolt; a labrys is a double-bitted axe, and many ancient examples have the handle shaft extended past the axe head, and some even have speared tips.
With this information, and the historic use of tridents as polearms, the trident could have been a polearm variation of a labrys. A labrys with a spear tip can easily fit the description of a trident, as curved and flat bladed axes do have their blades end at a tip, so it can easily fit the use of both a labrys and the traditional spear trident; and a polearm labrys would fit the other proposal of the trident being derived from Zeus' Lotus Scepter.
The only actual weapon I can find that would match the idea of a 'spear tipped labrys polearm' is a trilance sruss. I can only find the name by a French website that describes it as double halberd used by Sruss warriors. Though most 'double halberd' depictions I can find only have concaved axes, but the image of the 'trilance sruss' from that french website depicts convex axes; though like all halberds, I'm sure they can come with convex, flat, or concave axes with any number of varying arcs on the convex and concave blades. Some could probably even be asymmetrical. All of this with varying lengths and types of central spears; other than length, some depictions use a bladed spear rather than a conic or barbed spears.
I'm sure you could even create a double halberd in the shape of a trident. Have two convex axes start perpendicular to the shaft of the weapon, and come up to parallel or near-parallel to the shaft, and end with spear like tips, with a spear tip extending from the shaft. This would fit the description of a trident, the use of a trident as a fish spear and a polearm, and fit the various propositions of what the Trident may have been.
But of course, this is all just mythology with many stories and proposals, so what you think the trident of Poseidon is will vary from what another person thinks it is. Personally, I favor the double halberd idea, but that's just my personal preference. It's honestly all speculation since the Trident itself never existed, as it's part of a mythology and ancient religion, so it could literally be anything.

I want to thank you SOOOO much, for still doing 100% forged projects, I'm a blacksmith with far less skill and experience but i believe i can make those, and i hate it when i see other blacksmith channels forge something 50% and then grind it the rest of the way when they could have easily forged it 90% and ground the rest, i love seeing videos like this, and I know you read the comments so if you reply or not i just wanted to thank you and please continue that good work!

And I love seeing you make items that are more viable from a business perspective. Massive Damascus swords are extremely pretty to see, and really show off your amazing skills, but since they take so long I often wonder how practical they can be to sell and make a living on. Little projects like these, when done with enough volume, can easily support a business (especially for the starting craftsman).
I would be really interested in knowing more about the business side of blacksmithing.

Want to know a neat marketing trick? A cracked knife is not a knife you can't sell. Finish it up, and then bury it in the yard for a couple months or so. Dig it up, brush the dirt off and then sell it as a "relic" replica. It's a little niche, but at least it;s not a total loss.

Alec, I have a great idea for your ONE MILLION SUB video. Leading up to the 1M, make some damascus steel bow limbs, then complete the bow, along with some damascus arrow heads.....
Then when you hit 1M, go into a large open field and start firing at some targets.... Along with all your thrown weapons (throwing knives, throwing shovel, tomahawks, hunga munga...and whatever else you may make between now and then..shuriken, kunai, spear, javelin, trident, etc.)
Then for a grand finale shoot some flaming arrows into some pyrotechnics!!!! IT WOULD BE SO EPIC ALEC!!

Hey Alec, you should make a sliding door thing for your forge instead of having those broken up bricks there. maybe not even a 1 wing but a 2 wing door so you could control the opening even better.

A bit late but for the "pointy end" of the poker you could chisel the bar to about half way through at around 2.5"-3" and bend it back, then you could incorporate a fire weld (if your a beginner and trying things to learn this is ideal) then simply bend the bar back to form the point :) you can get some nice looking effects from this!

Also, invariably, your music selection is top notch (I think you would say "spot on" on your side of the "pond"😉) you (and Jamie) do a great job with your editing!👍🤙👊! Keep doing what you're doing!

You should make a damascus steel acoustic guitar and weld all the pieces together! That would be Awesome!
