- Little projects and little distractions in the blacksmith shop can sometimes keep you from working on the larger projects. But drifting from one small job to the next is still forward progress and work the needs to be done. This sort of shop drift can also be a pleasant way to spend time in any workshop.

The older I get, the more I drift. I've got lots of projects but most of them are just for fun. Most of my work is mowing, brush clearing, etc. Puttering around the shop provides the regular breaks I have to take. I don't have the stamina I had ten years ago, so drifting between things keeps me moving physically and mentally. "I don't know what dinner is but it's gonna be fried." Yes!
I think that stamina has a lot to do with it. My brain plans like I'm still 40
@@BlackBearForge I'm 75 and just in the last year I started feeling old for the first time. The realities of aging become evident sooner or later. My desire to try out new things is insatiable but the clock is ticking.
I’d like to see the restoration of the cabin. Drift, puttering it’s all done in the shop. It’s a mental health thing!
Cabin restoration videos will still get me out to the shop to work... Even a fried potatoes video is going to get me working. It's all good.

Puttering around is what I always heard it called, but the same thing. Sometimes those small tasks add up to a lot.

Just a legend! I have a 18 year old blacksmith that is being recognized at his high school graduation this week for his work because of you!. We have watched every time a new tub comes out. Been somethin fun to do together. Thank you!
My introduction to blacksmithing was at the Virginia Institute of Blacksmithing. At the time it was $250 for two 8-hour days, making a project you got to take home. It was an excellent experience, very friendly. I'd recommend them to anyone.
They're still pretty reasonable. I live in NC and they're actually closer to me than the John C Campbell Folk School, which also has an extensive blacksmithing curriculum.
I like to see any project you're working on, so doesn't matter if it's on this channel! You'll probably reach a bigger audience here!
I feel your pain. I have a habit of completing a job to the 80-90% point then letting it sit for a few years. When I finally get around to completing the task, it only takes a couple of hours. Drives me crazy! The barn refurbishing should be interesting. I don’t think I’ve seen the other channel.

You were an inspiration to me and is the reason why I told my wife that I want to hone my skills until I can do it full time. I watch you so frequently that we make jokes at the house that you are “ tv grandpa” because I started watching when my son was born. I would ask him if he wanted to watch you and he would say “tv grandpa” and it made us laugh. I’m glad you plan on doing videos for the foreseeable future because I still have a lot to learn and you are a good teacher. Keep up the good work.

Definitely want to see the cabin build on Black Bear. Always love a good big project, especially one that is foreign to me like a log cabin, and the algorithm prioritizes this channel over the personal one for me. I'd hate to miss it.

Shorter versions, updates would be awesome to see of the cabin. I just went down to Centaur Forge and picked up a Cliff Carroll wide face 70 lb anvil ( still have to mount it). I found them very nice to work with. Thanks for all you do.

Definitely puttering, that was my dad to a T, weekends he would go out and putter, occasionally a fully built trailer would appear out of the puttering other times it was just piles moving around. But it was always a full day for him. Edit to add I am loving the smaller shop videos as they are really helping me with figuring out how to reorg and manage my 'forge' in and around the rest of the stuff in my garage. Final edit to add (Note to self, watch all, then comment) I would love to see it all on this channel, if nothing else your style and personality is really engaging and relaxing. If not I have another channel to sub to.

My grandpa and i call it "dinging" and usually are some of the most enjoyable days although not necessarily the most productive. That old majestic stove was gorgeous, we have 2 of them. I for one would love to see the cabin come along.

I say post all the videos on the channel. I watch both channels. But I still think others will be interested as well. Maybe post them in addition to the forging videos you have stored so that there’s still blacksmithing/forging content.

shout out the VIB! Loved every class I've taken there so far. Saving up for the artistic certification and it's in large part to people like you that have helped show me how beautiful even the simple projects can be amd it's helped a lot with my personal growth.
I'd like to see the cabin videos, but I think it would be cool if you tie it into blacksmithing by posting a series of videos about making stuff specifically for that cabin. Especially if it's items that match the time period that the cabin was originally built.
Maybe a particular style of door hinge, or door handle, or candle holders, or fireplace poker, etc.

I always enjoy your videos they have inspired me in my journey in blacksmithing. I appreciate your mentioning of older anvils. I have a Peter Wright anvil produced sometime between 1830 and 1850 according to the markings on it. I enjoy forging on it. Thank you for the time you put in to help others like myself become better blacksmiths.

I love spending the occasional afternoon puttering around my shop. Mix up a little homemade axe wax here, maybe cut some rebar for future projects there, maybe move my tong rack for the 10th time. It’s not very difficult to distract a blacksmith sometimes with smaller simpler projects.
I for one enjoy the cabin update videos, and wouldn’t mind seeing them here on the “main” channel, but I’ll watch them no matter what page you upload them to.

Doesn’t matter what you make as far as vids go John most of us will watch anyway. I personally would love to see the cabin build I plan to make a log style cabin for a forge workshop one day.
Oh man what a cool old truck. I miss seeing those in the roads. Now I'm seeing them in fence rows going back to earth or car shows. Love seeing this old guy still being used for work.
Not much of a commenter, your videos being as near to perfect as is possible. I should like it very much if you would schedule the cabin work on this channel. Partly because as you said it is tool-and-construction related and partly because I was a carpenter before the Gods giggled and removed part of my physical ability to do the work. Nostalgia is a powerful thing and not to be denied. Thank you for giving me another reason to arise and greet the day through your videos.

As a side note: i went looking for some simple hooks to use with our camper, and couldn't find what i was looking for. I bought some inexpensive big-box round stock welding stock. Armed with the knowledge you've given me through this channel, I'm going to try my hand at making them from scratch. Thank you for sharing with us!

How strange. I had just watched some of your tool of the day hammer videos (just about to restore a couple of old hammers). Also making a titanium ring, which I pan to texture with a ball peen hammer even after watching your video on ball peen hammers. Also finishing a wood and copper project, so yes workshop drift.
Short technique videos can be very useful thanks.

Puttering is why after a year I still dont have my basic shop set up . Happens to all of us . I love the blacksmithing videos as well as the other projects you include . Would at least like to see cabin updates even if it is a short update at the end of a smithing video . Bring on the cabin videos. I seem to be interested in anything you do. Planning a trip to the train you showed on your other channel in a couple years with some friends. Also thanks for showing the “other” work that takes place in a blacksmiths shop. It’s easy to romanticize that work and think the only thing that happens is beating on steel. Nice to know about the odds and ends as so many of us have to deal with them. I am not a great blacksmith but I absolutely love doing it and some of my stuff is starting to sell. I owe a good portion of my knowledge to you. What started as a way to hang out with my son has turned into something I really enjoy doing. Thank you!!!
Hey John. Love your videos. I personally love watching construction videos. Especially Log Cabin Construction. I don't mind them being on this channel. I think that a lot of people who like blacksmith videos also would like these sort of videos. Here's an idea: You could use tools you've made or make tools for the construction you plan to do. You could also introduce the tool, explain a bit how you made it, explain what you would change to make it better etc. Keep up the good work buddy!
You could also mention some log cabin and Blacksmith history as well...

I can totally relate to the "drift" but I also procrastination as well. I'm working on it but having videos like yours really help get my mind set back into order. I find what helps me the most is just do small things like cleaning the shop. It helps give me time to figure out what I want to do next. Otherwise I try to do the small projects first regardless of the order of priority and I find I get alot more accomplished in a day then if I try to work on the big projects only.
With all that said the videos are very informative and I enjoy all of them that comes out and when jt comes to the cabin I would love to see that work on this channel as well. Hope everyone is being safe and goodluck with all the projects!

I relate to the puttering, not able to do too much with 4 kids at home. They like to putter too though, so lots of fun days in the garage or garden. I’d love to see the cabin restoration too!
