  • I would like to point out again, this is a silly design challenge and has no real use outside of this specific scenario. It was however a fun challenge to wrap my head around, I think we got a solid design out of it in the end.

    A few ideas:
    1. tune ups for the steam turbines, it should make the process of making nat gas (slightly) power positive;
    2. consider a symmetrical design, with half the sour gas goes around to the left of the central column, half to the right - you might need two Akus tho - having shorter steam chambers should make them more efficient - also, having 3 ATs on the left and 3 on the right might make the first ones (from the top) not too hot, hopefully.

    • @mrShift_0044
      @mrShift_0044 2 роки тому +6

      Yeah, vertically symmetrical design woud make it a bit more efficient AND provide a hefty place for our dear Aku statue right in the middle!
      Also: add heat transfer loops on the BOTTOM levels of turbines, inside the aquaturner room and EVERYWHERE ELSE WITH THE UNNESESARY HEAT GRADIENT and maybe RESTRAIN heat transfer on the top steam turbine room, to even out the heat drain throughout the levels, then there is going to be no need in bleed out system altogether.

    A new post-DLC option for rapidly deleting heat from sour gas or the petroleum boiler: boiling and condensing nuclear waste. The temperature range is just about right. No power generated this way, but you'd hardly be short on natural gas power on the oil planet.
    Plus, Aku standing in a lovely fountain of sour gas and radioactive waste, what's not to like?

      @@FrancisJohnYT yes 34 of them to be exact, to be fair it was on the old maps where you had a lot more space but it wasn't oil that was being brought through but liquid methane. The oil was being dripped down a large I think 30 tile high pyramid of air flow tiles and diamond temp shift plate to the bottom where 2 aqua tuners were heating it up, im 99% sure i got this from Tony Advanced's channel or from Gear Head Gaming. For it to work it had to be very very large and mostly tall so the heat exchange was near perfect and used everything using the liquid methane and sulfur, I got the idea from Tony Advanced's video on self powered(through steam turbines not using any of the methane) sour gas boilers the video is called "Self powered Natural Gas cooker " by Tony Advanced, the video its self is slightly out dated but there are forum posts and other lesser known videos on how to do it. Note: To make a truly self powered one now a days it has to be practically the entire maps height.

    As far as the initial power needs to get the boiler going on the oil planet. That planet does have a native natural gas vent. Which since the plan in general is to power things with natural gas, you won't even have to change away from the initial power setup if you just tap into it from the start. Also means you will be able to get your water/oxygen generation going in the process of setting up the power.

    • @OverworkedITGuy
      @OverworkedITGuy 2 роки тому

      @@FrancisJohnYT true enough, but there's a certain level of poetic symmetry in using natural gas to power a massive natural gas factory. Plus saves you the time of having to convert your power off coal and onto natural gas or something else later there later. Leaves more time for other projects, especially since making that massive boiler is probably going to take up a full episode at least to set up ;)
      That said, a nuclear reactor would also take care of the rad requirements to fire the stuff off everywhere else. Yeah this is probably going to be a multi-episode project easily. Should be fun to watch

    1) I'd get a mod to rename planetoids (which'll let you rename rockets too) and call the oil planet "The REFINERY" 2) I think I'll use the mini sour gas boiler on my world as I only got three oil wells on my starting planet. 3) The idea of a nuclear powered sour gas boiler is right up your alley, honestly too bad it doesn't get hot enough to use the reactor output to boil it directly. It is hot enough however to run a petro boiler.

  • @ilyazzar
    @ilyazzar 2 роки тому +2

    That is a beautiful monstrosity.
    Even though I'm not so good in this game, I d like to present to you my two cents to this "The Thing" design (DC comics).
    1) I never ever used those solid loops to chill/heat the environment, but it looks really great. Like using the steel one to transfer heat, yeah it does not store much, but conducts it's heat fast enough and it's also relativly cheap
    2)maybe there will be an option to use a solar panels too, yeah it's not much power, but it's still something to fill up that consumed power . of course i understand that you need that space to deliver methane to the planets, but you could build it with mesh tiles and under that delivery system - solar panels to maximise the power you could extract from a planet.
    3) I think you also have enother problem. once your cargo arrive to a destination it will need to be heated, but that's also power requirments to you
    4) WE WANT AKU THERE!
    love that.can't wait to see in the survavial game.

    Nuclear reactor for starting steam and power. Could take some of the steam itself or run the nuclear waste through a temporary heat exchange attachment to boil the water. I would try the attachment method since it can be torn apart after the boiler is up and running. The corner insulated tile where the dev power would be the best place for a heat exchange tile to get the starting steam in both rooms.

    Fun to see a design video like this. I would definitely prefer the big design. The current version doesn't have room for Aku though, so you'd need to make it slightly wider. Not sure if that causes any changes to the whole thing.
    You could always ship some of the the frozen methane to a small room nearby, heat it up somehow, and only ship in more if the pressure is below a certain amount. Then you have a room of backup power to keep this thing running.

The pipes in the lowest aquatuner loops spend some time in a vacuum, where they don’t contribute to cooling the sour gas. Maybe a heat transfer loop (gas pipes if you’re gonna go back to using the sulfur to optimize the cooling a bit, rails if not) running up and down the cooling area?

    Love the design episodes. Really makes the game more approachable and its very enjoyable watching you iterate on your designs. I wouldn't have tried to understand a sour gas boiler but watching this makes it seem much less daunting. Similar to how I never thought I'd grasp SPOMs, watched you (and others) build them a bunch of times, and now I can easily build one that overflows power into my main grid that isn't just a copy of Ol' Roddy.
    I do think you deserve a bit of a break lol. Between RimWorld and ONI, your series' are always on the edge. Maybe invert the scale and give yourself a different kind of challenge? How decadent could you make a base in ONI in 1000 cycles? Some sort of three- or four-dupe gimmick? One dupe per planetoid? Build the stupid monstrosity! I'd like to pressure into using the sulfur to provide additional chill specially making it zigzag through the metal tiles, also, conveyor bridges vertically on the heat exchanger will make it more efficient.

    Woo! the compendium of amazing designs is awesome. I've had a lot of fun with ONI using that little guidebook. Building those things in a real game is a special kind of challenge. As you note, the design is tricky but the boot sequences are often trickier.
    That said, bigger and stupider is the order of the day.
    If you could find some way to paint the whole thing red....

    Love your videos. I'm always having a blast when you explain your process and your contraptions.
    With the latest version of the game, there are now dev gax and liquid generator so you no longer have to build an infinite storage of supper couland, it's included in sandbox mode. Juste wanted to let you know so you can save you the trouble.

    FJ, I had a couple of thoughts on increased efficiencies, so I grabbed your save file and tinkered a bit... If you put your temperature insertion doors and the left side turbines a bit higher, With the doors at the middle of the aquatuners, it will spread your temperature differential better, which doesn't increase efficiency, but should mitigate your concerns about the top aquatuner temperatures. On the other hand, I tried increasing the right side steam chambers to 3 tiles high, putting tempshift plates across the middle row of each level, and them extending tempshifts in the sour gas room upwards 3 rows each for the bottom 2 and 2 rows for the top, and was able to squeeze a few more degrees of sour gas precooling from them. I also dropped the whole thing lower, with the bottom turbines' steam room sitting above the horizontal section of the sour gas room. I'm seeing the sour gas passing by at 125 to 127 degrees consistently. It's only a tiny efficiency gain, but the thing is already pretty close to energy neutral... I'm going to see if I can hunt up any more gains for you.

    A much more sane option would be to just send petroleum to the other planets, which can be burned for power + water. But we are well past sane options here aren't we!

    I recently learned of this interesting game mechanic: if you put in HOT water at the vaporization point of Petroleum, say 540` C, the Oil Refinery will spit out Sour Gas. 😂 This might save you a step in your build process. It also is 100% efficient!

    Unless the game has changed, there was a design that used 60 something gas valves and vents to convert 10 K/s of sour gas with zero sulfur. Would be a net 50% increase in natural gas without increasing the boiler portion

    • @FrancisJohnYT
      @FrancisJohnYT  2 роки тому

      That thing was huge, I don't think the oil planet has enough free space for that. The main planet/Base game planet version is about the only place you can build something like that.

    I'd skip the nuclear reactor, it would mean shipping fuel, and you want to export energy, not import energy.
    You also might scale the amount of temp shift plates upwards as you move on in the design, so the first one has one layer, the second has two, the third has three, and so on. Tthe hottest SG has the least exposure, and the cooldest pre-cooled SG has the most. This would mean you have to expand the SG tunnel to be wider, but that would let you go back to having room for Aku.

    Nice, love seeing a gas elevator. Though you do need a mesh tile under each vent in order for it to form a bead that exchanges heat. I still think you should've used supercoolant to get away with counterflows as short as 6 tiles ;). Though you wouldn't be able to export it as a solid in that case

    • @HappyGingerWolf

      No need, 1 conveyor rail can handle 20kg/s of material, which is more than this boiler can produce

    • @FrancisJohnYT
      @FrancisJohnYT  2 роки тому

      The issue is once the loader start picking up one type of material it keeps picking up the same type of material as it's constantly raining sulphur and methane. The only way I could get it to work was two loaders and sweepers. Also had to have one of the sweepers only in range of one of the loaders.

    For a real world boot up, wouldn't generating steam in a separate steam boiler to be pumped into the aqua tuner room save potential headaches? So you get pre heated steam environment for the aqua tuners to exist in.

  • @soppen42
    @soppen42 2 роки тому

    Some quick math and you are constrained by the cooling down of SG to solid methane. Anything that will reduce the SG temp will allow more throughput (or a higher safety margin). One thought is cool the SG after the turbine section by running the crude through (125ishC -> 100ishC... 7% or so impovement). Sulfur is terrible but a long external counter flow with incoming crude could drop this even further.
