Bottas and Russell 3D Crash Animation - F1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix 2021

- A 3D reconstruction of the collision between George Russell and Valtteri Bottas at the Formula 1 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, Italy. Including realistic new onboards and slow motion replays. Enjoy the crashalong!
Who did you blame after you saw Bottas & Russell collide at Imola? I wanted to see it from top view and was curious if the Russell's tyre could have slipped over the cockpit without halo. So directly after the incident, I analysed all available footage and made this animation in Blender. Based on the onboards of Kimi Raikkonen and Russel, I could accurately place the cars just before the collision, the determine how much space there was. Does it change your view on the accident?

Disclaimer:
At some moments during the reconstruction, I had to make educated guesses about the dynamics of the car and barrier. It is not simulated and I do not claim that the animation is 100% accurate. It is based on the experience of a simple mechanical engineer with a fetish for crashes.

Kimi driving around at neutral gear is more epic than the whole crash
The drink is powering the car
The car in this vid is driving in Neutral gear lmao
I think all of them are
Honestly something that Kimi would do
It's very Kimi of him.
I wouldn’t mind if you were to put some watermark on these as I see many people using your animations but you get no reward for the work you did
Lol I actually forgot and only realised when reading this comment haha
@@Crashalong definitely worth it. I already see youtube "shorts" that are just clippings from other channels and people claim its fair use
Well the helmet is kinda a watermark right
@@Crashalong you should look at doing some NASCAR crash breakdowns such as Ryan Newman's 2020 Daytona crash

Kimi: "They spun"
Can we just appreciate how the onboard camera actually looks like a real on board camera, slightly to the side, and not perfectly angled... Love it
That's for the broadcast. We need the driver positions and other info to the left of the screen.
@@sampathbalivada-personal for the broadcast it doesn't make a difference. You could still display all the info on the side of the screen without obstructing important parts.
The T cams as we know them today have always been off centered most likely because there is for looking in a forward direction and another for looking backwards mounted symmetrically with the electrical wiring going through the middle.
I've been amazed by your previous recreations but this time I'm even more so.
- It's been 10 days since the race.
- F1 only put out 1 video about this and they just recut the onboards and trackside camera footage into a short montage.
- This is based on those footage and clearly showcases what happened ,from different angles ,at different speeds.
Basically: Congratulations ,you did a better job than the official F1 Media team. :)
"This is based on those footage and clearly showcases what happened ,from different angles ,at different speeds."
yet slightly wrong though
@@JustaGuy1250 I'd still take it over nothing.
@@JustaGuy1250 okay buddy let’s see your 3D animation that represents it more accurately.... oh wait
@@Jerraldough the fact i dont animate doesn't mean i cant criticise it?
hell, the criticism isn't even about the animation part of it.
it's about what is shown to have happened
@@JustaGuy1250 I mean you could go look at the actual crash if you want it spot on. At least we get different angles. Without this you prob wouldn’t have known halo helped. What is slightly wrong?
Submit your work to formula 1 official, they would love these type of video to promote the Halo !
Thats so 2018, we all already know the halo works zzz
We definitely know that we NEED the halo because of Grosjean's crash.
@@ancientpickle You fotgot about Leclerc in spa 2018
@@vyepez500 you forget there are still idiots that claim it doesn’t
I'm all for the halo, but it seems to me that in this particular case Bottas would be fine without it. It looks like Russel's wheel was stopped by the side of the car and wouldn't hit Bottas if the halo wasn't there.
If you shows Bottas showing his middle finger to Russel in this animation video....that would be awesome😂😂😂😂
If you shows how Bottas is fuckin loser in this video, that would be awesome 🤣🤣🤣

I didn't realize Halo save Bottas in this accident until I see this video.
@Rusty Gamer every body can realise that the halo saved Grosjean
@@sjors050 It was still worth a mention that the halo is proving to be an important safety device. In USA they have also added plastic screening for catching small debris items.
(Most) f1 drivers when halo wasnt there: i said we dont crash near the drivers face today
f1 drivers when halo was added: crash every race and the halo saves them
Edit, i said this bc if the drivers had this types of crashes 10 years ago, halp the grid would be missing
@Rusty Gamer ok
No, its quite clear the halo didn't do anything here. The wheel got caught on the side pod, not the halo
Idk if someone said it, but this is surprisingly good. I hope we had pc or consoles that could stand this type of realistic physics
A High End PC can do it. But designing a game around 0.5% of all potential Players is not worth the production cost
yeah we can, we really can this is actually a bad tender all things considered
These types of simulations can take weeks to prepare and pre-bake on modest hardware. Real time rendering for stuff like this is currently impossible to all but the richest gamers
@@sharcc2511 yeah if u have a good pc beamng is a great game to play for crash physics and realism but running 20 of these cars would be a handful for that game due to all the physics and detail on each and every car
@@sharcc2511 Exactly. That is why i said 0,5%(or lower) of all potential players.
So, yes it is possible to a degree but it is not realistic to expect a studio to do this
The amount of times the halo has prevented serious injuries at this point, its incredible
I am pleased that you have adopted my idea with the custom helmet design :)
Haha, yes thanks for that! I happily involve you guys and consume all your great ideas :) Keep 'em coming!
I was about to say I love the helmet design! Great idea!
@@Crashalong steering wheel look noice
from the first time i saw the crash and every time after, i'm still amazed they both pirouetted at the exact same time and same angle.
It was sad, but also beautiful
@@ragnarwiik2054 agreed
Awesome animation great job showing all the angles and perspectives, thanks for posting look forward to more scenarios.
If you did that with Blender........Omg this is the best animation ever. Congratulations!
1:12 damn that Russell went fast 😂😂
Yes, Bottas was still trying to get grip in the soft tyres just fitted and was why he was sticking to the dry line as he knew the wet area had little grip with cold tyres.

Incredible work! Especially in blender. This is amazing!
Keep the videos coming like to see something every Grand Prix season interesting how lucky these drivers are
A pretty damn good animation of it all. Well done.
So good! Thanks Crashalong.
Loved the fact that you even added Kimi’s POV
Very well made! :D
The fact that The Whole corner was covered with product placement makes this 10x better
This channel deserves way more subs
This is just amazing, keep going bro, keep going
This is AMAZING, this is a huge amount of work congratulations !
I don't mind if this guy makes videos every single year but I will really enjoy them
I’ve said this before i’ll say it again this stuff is quality and amazing I love these
Great work once again. I think this is one of the most underrated F1 channel on YT.👍
The first time I saw the crash I said thank god for that halo! Great video! 👍🏼
Incredible. Absolutely well done! ✅
Wow ! Incredible! That was picture perfect
Super like. Just good 3D crash explanation.

You're getting better at this, nice reconstruction
Very underated channel. Nice video!
You made a fantastic job !...
Thank you for this smart and interesting video...
:-)
From Brussels, with Love...
This is amazing!
Can you do one for Senna please? It’d be interesting to see what it would look like if the onboard camera hadn’t gone to black. And a more in depth look could probably explain what happened
To the tops, please!
I doubt we would get more information than is already available, so it would not explain what happened for sure
I would also like to see it but if you think about it, its quite disrespectful to his family as it is basically replaying his death
@@remobbles Yeah that’s exactly what I was thinking too but I’m just so damn curious. There’s been some remakes already using games but they’re so terribly recreated and this guy recreates them almost 100% perfectly so that’s why

You got yourself a niche in the market
Great job
The halo protected Bottas, because Russell wheel was right on top of the Mercedes cockpit. The halo really is proving to shield drivers in so many ways to get hit on the helmet with such force from a heavy object, like a wheel.
Or Russel's hand
@@Vincent9895 Oh yeah, that too.
It seems like since the halo's came in there is always stuff bouncing off of them. It's strange that we didn't hear of drivers getting hit in the head more before they were brought in.
People are too quick to praise the halo. It did nothing here, the wheel wasn't even close to hitting Bottas
@@peterjones6456 yea just like in ww1 when helmets were issued to the British soldiers and a lot of shots that would have missed them now hit their helmet due to an increased surface area. Still, I think this time it prevented the wheel from coming any closer to Bot but I think it would have been a similar (ish) hit like in that 4 way crash (with Jos Verstappen and Ervine??) A hit but no damage.
Simply amazing!
This is good, congratulations
You work is simply amazing, well modeled and renderized, keep doing it!! Congrats
If I could ask a crash reconstruction, I know it takes a HUGE time in the proccess of modeling, breaking the model, animation, etc... But It would be Surfers Paradise 2002, not so many angles, but would be amazing to see how miraculously no one was serious injured
Brilliant. Thanks
Very good animation, as always. It would have been nice if you had included Russell's halo deflecting an incoming tyre (and possibly saving him as well).
This animation is pretty well made

That Explains Well...!
Wow this looks so realistic 😍😍😍
Wow this is super accurate
"Are you alright? Engine off! Engine off!"
-Jeff the engineer
Well, I guess this was it then.
Finally someone who realized the angle of the corner, well portrayed how small the track got for Russel
In the video he said that there was 395cm of space and f1 car's width is 200cm so there was almost 2 car's width and 1 is what is must.
@@samsan1254 its tight and fast, Bottas is changing direction in the middle of russell's DRS Overtake. It should be avoidable IF : bottas's engineer warn about russell, or russell lift off (it makes it worst for them). Its a pretty straight lane btw but to hit the apex for the next corner the most optimal line for it its bottas's line, but he should know when russell DRS overtaking. I know that Bottas is defending, but they are both failed at it.
Conclusion : Its an accident.
@@kamil5b339 I see Bottas taking a smooth arc to the corner and in no way impeding Russel to push him onto the grass. In fact Bottas gave him plenty of room whether he knew Russels was there or not. As Russel was moving to the right to pass he made the slight bend tighter than it is, moved out to far thinking incorrectly Bottas was squeezing him, and catching the grass with the rear tyre. To me it's clearly Russel's fault but a racing accident all the same. Split second decisions like those racing drivers have to make are rarely easy and, in the heat of the moment, won't always get them right.
@@stevecade857 yeah, its an accident, Russell fail to seize the gap, Bottas move slightly to the right when George want to overtake him from the right side and maybe he panicked that Bottas will keep going right and squeeze him so he went too far to the right and into the wet grass and the incident happens.
@@kamil5b339 Because of the slight bend to the left and Russel moving to the right it must of looked to Russel as Bottas was moving more than he actually was as the gap looked like it was closing out fast. When you're travelling at 200 mph you don't have much room for error.
Excellent work. Thank you.
How many times I watched videos about the collision - I do not understand why part of the public makes Bottas guilty if Russell was spun to contact.
Excelent!
Nice !
