      Russell didn't get on the grass. It was more aquaplaning from a wet patch on the edge of the track. So Russell never went off the track. It's just that he was unlucky that a wet patch was present there. Yes, he could have been more close to Bottas to reduce the risk, but again, this is at 300kmh. So racing incident for me, but Russell is also slightly at fault. Bottas is at no way at fault.

      Thing is, if you compare those two, you need to see where Lando was compared to the pit exit line. Totally to the left of it. Bottas had his right wheels on the right side of that line. Also another thing people just casually say is "Bottas realized he was squeezing Russell", or something along those lines. Yes he did leave a car's width, but he did so at too much of an angle. Bottas headed over to the right side of the dry racing line and continuing too quickly for a faster Williams with more speed and DRS on a wet part of the track. Bottas' movement was the cause for Russell not having much of a chance in keeping on the track, but it is wayy too small for penalizing Bottas. Racing incident.

    There is one difference between Hamilton and Russell I missed from Jolyon here, but I think is worth mentioning.
    Notice how Hamilton already steers back to the left while his car is still partly behind Norris' car (for the note: front left wheel still behind Norris' rear right wheel). While Russell only starts steering back to the left when he's car got completely out of the slipstream of Bottas (Russell's left front wheel on the righthandside of the rear right wheel of Bottas). Therefore, when Russell's car is alongside Bottas car, it's still pointing significantly towards the grass. While by steering earlier like Hamilton did, he managed to place the car much more in the direction of the track and parallel to Norris's car, having much more control of the placement of the car in that gap on the outside.

    • @vladxx2
      @vladxx2 3 роки тому +1

      I think Russel got overexcited - he was worried that pulling out of the slipstream too early would lose him too much speed, so chose dangerous and fast method over safe and slightly slower. Hamilton was smart enough to not panic and to make sure to bring the car home - he learned how valuable concistency over raw speed is when battling Rosberg.

      I'm normally 100% with Palmer but here I think what he fails to mention is that Bottas has so much more grip on the drier part of the track than Russell and as such has more responsibility for the outcome. He could see Russell going for the pass and he still put him out on the wet stuff at 320 km/h. Yes he left room but the room that he left wasn't really usable at those speeds. Russell went wider than he needed to because Bottas had already shown a blatant disregard for Russell's safety and how was Russell to know that he wasn't going to keep drifting wide?
      It's easy to analyse this stuff with frame-by-frame slo-mo but it needs to be kept in mind that it all happened in milliseconds. Russell went for the pass because he had the speed to make the corner ahead of Bottas. Bottas put Russell into a position where the only outcome was an accident. He could have stayed left and they would both have made the corner. Just saying...

    Great analysis of the incident. The only thing missing is the analysis of why Russell ran his mouth even wider and let himself slipping in letting all know he, at this moment, considers himself entitled to Bottas' place. The question is: would Hamilton like to have such a hothead chasing his seat as team leader (re-edition of the Hamilton-Rosberg times, now with a careless driver) or, even worse, would Mercedes want to have a Bottas-Russell team-up if Lewis leaves, if this is what Russell has to offer? Russell will learn to judge better when to try to pass a car in front. That's a skill. Will he learn to respect his opponents? That's character and Russell has already shown one or two times with Latifi that he may not be the best of team mates.

      @newsfromthefrunk 3 роки тому +3

      I was wondering the same thing. George has DRS open so there should be less downforce. My first thought was that something broke in the suspension or he got a puncture and that contributed to his problems. I guess the team will say if something like that happened.

      @@martinuso7446 It's not. The bottom of his car was just scraping the ground for whatever reason and modern F1 cars are designed to do that. They have a plate on the floor and it's regulated how much that plate can actually scrape.
      My best guess is that the tyres were quite loaded from the turn, therefore squatting the right side of the car and causing it to bottom out a bit.
      Whatever the cause for the bottoming out was, it certainly had nothing to do with Russell losing control.

    • @martinuso7446
      @martinuso7446 3 роки тому +1

      @@bigmaclexa2981 When a car bottoms out it loses pressure on the rear wheels. The down force pressure is on the ground directly and not via the wheels. This makes the wheels spin much easier. Look at his steering wheel movements, he starts fighting the car from the moment he comes in clean air and starts bottoming out. Senna had the same problem in the same corner, he also bottomed out and lost the rear.

    6:14 the main difference here is Hamilton performs the overtake AFTER the curve, on a straighter road. Note the position of the dark green tree on the right and the whole pit lane line (it’s finished in the Hamilton video). Less natural “squeeze” due to less road curvature. Better judgement on where to pass.

      I totally have to agree. Although I am by no means a Hamilton fan I have to give him respect for that overtake. He had twice the chance to overtake but he saw that Norris was just not giving him that tiny bit space enough which is why he waited unlike Russel.
