Boss Reverb Shootout RV-2 + RV-3 + RV-5

  • So I found myself owning all three Boss reverb stompboxes at once, and I looked to see if anyone had made a video of all three before, and seems like I'll be the first! I just took a quick look at how bright/dark each pedal can get, as well as maximum available decay time. Some people may wonder which one sucks the most/least tone, and though I haven't done an official test on it, it sounds like the RV-5 has the best buffer in it of the three, and the RV-3 and RV-2 both have sub-par buffers. Like I mentioned in the video, the RV-5 is definitely the brightest, and the RV-3 is the darkest. For the record, I don't think any of these have a very good spring reverb. I think the hall setting across the board is my favorite. It has the most color and the most body available, most people agree that the modulate setting on the RV-5 is in a league of it's own, and is very cool and fantastic for ambient stuff. It's nice to put at the end of your signal chain and give it all that modulated trail while relying on your delays, etc. to carry that low end that the RV-5 lacks. I think the RV-3 is the most overall usable of the three. It has the most usable tone IMHO, and has the most features. The reverb+delay modes are very cool as well, and the mix knob can be very fun. It also has a semi-usable delay, which could be nice if you needed delay in a pinch.
Again, I was playing a 2009 Gretsch Duo Jet w/ Filtertrons, into the pedalboard (Radial Bones Texas Overdrive, Boss RV-2, Boss RV-3, Boss RV-5), then to the '95 Fender USA Blues Deville 2x12.
Hope you enjoyed the video! Questions or comments? Again, all the glory goes to God! Thanks for watching, and God bless!

Great vid, I agree the RV3 rules, I used to own one but unfortunately sold it years back. I played about with the RV5 tonight at band rehearsal cause somebody had left it sitting. My fave modes were Plate, Hall & Spring which is unique to this one I think. Bottom line is every pedal has its setting.

@waxieman11 Thanks! Glad you were able to take something out of it :) I dig the 3 a lot! though, in my opinion, you can do a pretty solid modulated reverb with the hall of fame reverb from tc electronic thanks to the tone print thing. it has, what im told is, an rv-5 emulation tone print called 'room with a view' i think. i have it on mine right now and it sounds a little different but can produce a MUCH more lush sounding reverb! and the chords were mostly G9 D9 D/F# give or take a major 7th :D

I would agree and say the RV-2 is probably the most natural sounding and the cleanest. And yes, the RV-3 distorts a little bit. For someone looking for over-the-top reverb though, I believe the RV-3 to be the winner. And if you're looking for a natural reverb, I honestly wouldn't recommend any of the Boss reverbs. I feel they all sound at least slightly digital. I would go with a boutique spring reverb or something.

Definitely! That whole album is great, as well as the Awakening album! I hear they are coming out with a NYC album this December, pretty excited for that :)

Indeed! The RV-3 was the first legit pedal I ever bought and it will probably never leave my board, and it's really hard to replicate in a different pedal. Though, the BSR is awesome and had I the money, I would get one! Just got the Eventide Space though, and that thing ROCKS reverb :)

Glad you liked the video! And I recently moved to stereo as well and had the same problem. However, I'll say I actually emailed Dan B. at T1M and he told me he could mod an RV-3 to have stereo inputs! I may take him up on that because I really want to have the RV-3 in the rig. I don't care for the RV-5 nearly as much. Way too much high end. I'm actually not sure how Boss allowed that be the final draft of the RV-5. If they make more reverb pedals, I hope they nail it!

@ghaleon0075 thanks! i think the RV-2 is really cool, and i think it's got a better overall usable reverb than the RV-5. the RV-2 nails that lo-fi reverb sound and is great for ambient playing especially IMO. i still am a sucker for the RV-3 though :)

I agree on the brightness of the RV-5. Not usable enough for how much it costs, though I also agree the Mod setting has much magic going on! On the RV-2 noise thing, I'm not sure that I noticed any noise issues with it, though I wouldn't be surprised if some were noisy and some weren't as it was the first reverb in stompbox form ever made, may have dropped the ball somewhere in the quality department at Boss(?)

thanks for the demo. Do you think the input/output b on the rv5 for a completely wet signal is decent compared to other products?

He said something along the lines of: he was suprised that you played a 'jesus culture' song, and it sounded nice and ambient / spacial. He is thinking of buying one of these pedals and god bless.
thats my good deed of the day done.
PS, i think i like the RV-2 the most... but im not a massive boss fan. the search for the ultimate (and affordable) reverb pedal continues!

Rv-3 for sure but good reverb pedals can be had for cheap these days. They're just terribly digital sounding. Dig the mod setting too though ;)

I have RV-3 and Strymon BSR. This is crazy, but I like hall reberb on RV-3 better. Cool pedal! BTW Jesus Culture rocks!

Not really. Even if I were replacing it with something on my current pedalboard, I would still probably keep it. It's the first real pedal I ever purchased so it holds much sentimental value to me.

I honestly have not used my reverbs in that way before, but I can tell you that I don't see the RV-5 as a top-quality pedal in general. I would side with the TC Electronic Hall of Fame for the money over this pedal hands down. Sorry I can't give you a good answer on your specific question :-/

Great review! I was thinking to buy the RV-5, but I may chose the RV-3 instead. I'm sorry to say, but God has nothing to do with any of this. the Boss engineers are responsible for the great sound. Remember, things generally stand tall by their own merits, and God/religion has no merits. The burden of proof reflects that. If this web of confusion were true, then hiding in the clouds is just cowardly. Anyhoo
