03:44 vs 04:13 // 03:55 vs 04:24 The Modulate in the RV-5 does have something a little more special in it, like people say. Almost a voices / choral pad in the reverb once the echos start to harmonise.
Couldn't really bond with the RV-6 when I had it, granted the decay time is longer and it's a bit smoother, but it also sounds a bit more digital and cheesy. Ended up getting a 2nd hand RV-5 and actually prefer it to be honest. It doesn't dull your sound like the RV6, which also has this slightly jarring low frequency feedback thing going on. The modulate or hall settings on the RV-5 are enough just to round off the overall sound for volume swells and ambient stuff (given that you have delay before it).
Thanks for the review.. i found in my store almost half the price difference (used RV5, new RV6).. I guess I would pick the RV5, and for shimmer will just use my EHX Ocean 11.
just bought a RV5 today for the modulation setting (and also the high tone control cranked up bright sound). that modulation is SO RECOGNIZABLE AND GOOD
hi. for ambient music, how would compare the rv6 to the rv5? on one hand the rv6 has shimmer. but I've heard around that the mod on the rv5 was much better.
If you really love modulated reverb, you can't go wrong with the old trusty RV-5. To me, all the modes on the RV-6 sounds pretty good, but not great. Even the shimmer one sounds a bit 'plastic'. The RV-5 would be 'meh' on every mode, but the 'modulate' one. It's just magical! No other 'modulated verb' sounds better.
Noticed 4:50 (rv-5) / 5:20 (rv-6), hall bright comparison, the signal with the tone knob dimed on the RV-5 is perceivably noisier than the RV-6. The RV-5 was way brighter, too (in an annoying way imo).
I'm not sure really! I love both pedals.. I think personally I prefer the RV-5.. I used that for a long time and modulate is a comfortable setting to me.. so i'm a bit biased ;D
Shimmer adds (depending on the pedals application of the feature) an octave trail above or below. Modulation does not but is the amount of aural movement the verb sonically imparts.
The RV-5 'modulate' mode could be described as 'shimmery' because of its bright and lively sound, but actual 'shimmer' adds upper octaves on the trails in order to make the wet sound like an orchestral synth pad.
The evolution of Boss pedals models typically result in ascending model numbers with each new generation: RV-2, 3, 5, & 6. The only Boss compact that went backwards was the Loop Station: RC-2, 3, and 1.
The rv6 is just duller is all. Turn the tone down on the rv5 and its the same. I highly doubt they engineered a whole different sound for these settings. You are demo-ing the sounds with effect level turned up past what an ordinary user would have. You should have E level at 12 Oclock.
This discussion freaks me out! All Reverb pedals sound the same at medium position on UA-cam. A lot of people are interested in how a pedal sounds cranked. This is what makes the difference: you always can back up tone but you can never know how it sounds fully drenched. Anyway it's not cranked enough for me - I won't buy that pedal based on that video since I have no idea what I will get.
How do think you can ever judge a Spring Reverb without doing a Surf Tune to demonstrate it by???! Someone needs to tell these Birdbrain demonstrators why people want an Spring Reverb. It sure isn't to do what this person was doing. Drip! Where is the Drip?!!!!

Good point
the list of options that one pedal can do but the other can't, was excellent!
I'll be sure to bring that back in future comparison videos :D thanks for commenting!
This is a fantastic side by side - thanks for the great production and clear labeling of what is going on, and keeping it simple.
I like the synthetic brightness of the rv-5 when maxed. it's awesome
Seems that the RV-5 can get as dark (or very close) to the RV-6 but the RV-6 can't get as bright as the RV-5.

I own the RV-6 and it's a game changer for me. I Love the damn thing to death
Both sound great. I just made an offer on a RV-5 on Reverb. I'll probably buy a new RV-6 too, what the hell!

IMO there is no better modulated reverb than the RV-5, but every other setting on the RV-6 a HUGE improvement over the RV-5...
just bought a RV5 today for the modulation setting (and also the high tone control cranked up bright sound).
that modulation is SO RECOGNIZABLE AND GOOD
Still love my Boss RV-2.. Still works and sounds great.. 12bit goodness!
I own RV-5 and I am not fond of the spring reverb "artefacts". Are they also so audible and that much present in RV-6?

i was set on the RV6 but after watching this i like the RV5
@Ryan: i am interested to know which one do you think sounds better?
All of your vids are amazing btw :)

So to be clear, do both have a decay option? Sorry I'm new to the reverb pedals, but I know I need a good decay...RV5 or RV6 for this?
This is video is very well done. Apples to apples, which is the only way to make a decision. Thanks.
steven messick what u choose?
Modulate on the RV-5 is so much better than the RV-6's.
Meu achismo kk Spring Rv5 , plate ambos, hall ambos, Room RV6 e modulte Rv6.
Hall and modulate are for sure better on RV5
modulate on the rv-5 is one of my favs.. so good
sounds pretty close
People hate RV-5, People love RV-6, People say RV-5 better than RV-6. Paradox!
Agree, its confusing af 😂
Is there anyone here has tried with the saxophone?
Sold on the RV5!
rv-6 sounded way smoother and more rounded, the rv-5 sounded more tinny/distance and overall just not as good in my opinion.
Do you feel any of these pedals provide stereo spread or are they dual mono?
Hi, one question, the modulation effect would be something similar to the shimmer?
no, man
Shimmer adds (depending on the pedals application of the feature) an octave trail above or below. Modulation does not but is the amount of aural movement the verb sonically imparts.
The RV-5 'modulate' mode could be described as 'shimmery' because of its bright and lively sound, but actual 'shimmer' adds upper octaves on the trails in order to make the wet sound like an orchestral synth pad.
what is best to acoustic?
I used the RV-5 for a long time with acoustic and I liked it.. I've not tried the RV-6 with acoustic though
can u record a video using an acoustic guitar?
sure :) I'll have it up asap!
+Ryan Lutton cool. waiting for it :) thanks
still waiting bro....hahaha just kidding, but would be awesome see the boss rv6 tested with a acoustic guitar :)
For my tastes, the RV-5 smokes the RV-6. I specifically care about the Hall and Modulate modes, and the RV-6 just isn't as good on those at all.
Which is the newer pedal ,The RV-6 ?
Little Holmes yes
What number comes first, 5 or 6? What kind of question is that haha

@@anisopiavision ha ha ha
@@anisopiavision tell that to the yamaha portasound series
Can we use it for vocal?
yes

RV6
RV5 sounds like an analog pedal
