Just as a point of interest, the Arion DRS-1 Digital Reverb pedal actually beat the RV-2 to the market, but hardly anyone even remembers that. One of the interesting things about the RV-2 is that it cannot take a battery, due to its relatively high current requirement of 130 mA, which would drain a 9V alkaline battery in very short order, so Boss elected to make the RV-2 their first adapter-only pedal, and packaged it in a larger box with a PSA-120 adapter. This lead to the RV-2 being somewhat unpopular in its day, and I purchased mine on clearance sale at Sam Ash on 48th St in Manhattan for only $69 in 1990. Now, $69 then was a lot more than $69, today, but for 21 year old me working barely above minimum wage, that was affordable.
Boss PSM-5 was the only other Boss pedal minus a battery strap.
I have the Arion digital tuner pedal from mid 80s and they had to be the first at making those. Also I just got a RV-2 today. The PSM-5 and RV-2 were the only two Boss pedals to come with a big box with a power supply.
Gated reverb for percussion is such a Genesis thing.
But yeah, Boss is probably the only brand I constantly fanboy over :)
i literally want all of them man, thanks for watching :)
Its also an Admiral Angry thing! ua-cam.com/video/NOISwfiyvrc/v-deo.html
I owned one of these in the early 90's, it works great for running on an extra track for creating ambience in a dry room, another great vid.
thanks so much, i can imagine
Another great demo and set of dreamy melodies 👏👏👏 Always appreciate the sounds you send gliding through our heads 😍🤙🕉
i always love the way you word your comments. dreamy gliders 😍 thanks again :)
If anyone is wondering, the first analog reverb pedal is probably the DOD FX45 Stereo Reverb pedal, released in 85.
How do you have analog transistor reverb?
The DOD FX45 is THE rarest pedal. I've never seen one for sale.
@@ppaaccco They were only sold for two years. They stopped production in 1987 because the BBD chip became increasingly rare and grew too expensive.
The Great " Grace " album by Jeff Buckley featured these ! Didn't need an echo chamber. This meant you could " DIY " Nice.
i did not know that. love jeff buckley & especially that album of course, what a talent!
i thought he used an alesis quadraverb?
@@5ky1ar both
Skylar Francise he and Michael T both used Alesis Quadreverbs live. Grace would have been reverbs available at Bearsville studio and Quantum Sound
@@roberthaley1 Just adding to this Jeff Buckley thread :) On Grace, Andy Wallace most likely used rack effects for the guitar sounds on that album. There's a good video from Andy Wallace himself about dialing in the verb for Hallelujah. For the Grace tour, they had Alesis Quadraverbs controlled by ART X-11 Midi footswitches and I think when Jeff was recording My Sweetheart the Drunk, the band was changing their sound and they went to using Boss pedals for a more dry live sound (you can hear this on the Arlene's Grocery 1997 live set). Michael Tighe has stated in a Musicradar interview that later they used Boss Reverb pedals live, so it's was either the RV2 or newer RV3 at the time. He was also playing with an Ibanez Talman as well as some different amps (some photos show Matchless amps)?
I love the way you edit all these videos
thanks so much dude
Nice visuals as well!
thank you :)
Love the panning delay on this thing! Would definitely get a lot of use out of that
only realised it had it after i bought it. so much greatness inside it, to think it's the first of its kind is crazy!
Had this pedal and sold it like a dummy. The plate is magical, such a cool pedal time to buy another one!
each setting is so beautiful, hope you get another!
Of course I would use the gated verb for show gazing but it’s also super nice on vocals. Was my secret weapon for years.
sounds great. i'm sure it has a lot of great applications :)
I liked Johnny Marrr at the time of The Smiths, great musician. excellent video as always
thank you my friend :)
I have this pedal. Great video! Well done! 😊
thank you so much! :D
The rv2 is hands down my favorite boss pedal of all time. Mine started making unpleasant noises after moving to Japan for some reason. My top request for the next line of waza pedals (along with hm2)
Your vid looks great. love it
thank you :)
Awesome vídeo 🥰
thanks so much!!!
This was my first pedal. I have it since mid 80ties. I botht it because my Marshall has no effects. Good Demo!
ah that's awesome - it's one of my favourite reverbs! thanks :)
I came for the reverb, but my god man the last bit with the blues driver that sounds like a kaiju fight and squeeling breaks is beautiful! I want to know more about that western too!
i was thinking of yoshimi battles the pink robots {ii} by flaming lips for that part! & that western was purely fictional, but i guess i'll have to start work on it now for you! thanks dude :)
@@pedalpartners Or you could perform your own soundtrack to an existing film like SQURL does!
I've had this pedal for years and would never sell it. It's sounds wonderful and I much prefer it to all the other Boss RV pedals.
it's definitely full of character!
So many folks will sometimes tend to shop for 'boutique' reverbs straight away... so as to kind of, dare to be different or just for other variances perhaps...?
But what this clearly shows is BOSS has been there the whole time...
Quality
I'm glad you are showing this.
Easy + sound quality = Fun mc2
✌🏻♠️
classics for a reason :)
The large Hall setting sounds fantastic. I also really enjoyed the noise part at the end. I'd recommend you check out the Boss RV-3, it is also very good. As always - great video!
thanks man, appreciate the support. the rv-3 is sick, i have one, so i guess a video will have to come out of it ;)
@@pedalpartners Great, loking forward to it!
@@johanneskulesza6841 thanks :)
In my opinion the Roland GS 6 digital rack preamp, which also had an approximation of the Boss CE1, plus three other chorus/modulation modes, ping-pong panning delay of up to 1second, 8 fantastic Roland studio quality reverb algorithms, including 2 and 3 spring reverb simulations, a noise gate, and tunable hum cancellation feature, plus its variable effects order, professional XLR outputs, as well the 1/4 inch outputs, not to mention the 8 different drive simulations, is worth investigating also. The unit had 64 memory presets, which was more than enough for users into "shoe-gaze", dream pop, ambient, etc., it was endorsed by Francis Dunnery of "It Bites", when the unit first came out in 1988. At that time, most people missed the point of the unit because they were expecting a unit similar to the ADA MP1, ACT MP100, or a Mesa/Boogie Triaxis. I think of it as a Roland Jazz Chorus, Boss CE1 chorus, ping-pong delay, and programmable Boss RV2 in a preamp enclosure. The clean sounds are sublime, as are the reverbs, 4 different chorus modes and delay combined. The Roland GS6 is usually available at a cheaper price than a MIJ Boss pedal of the same era. I have had mine since purchase in 1989, and it's a very dependable unit, and easy to program.
sounds so good! i'll have to investigate :)
Once I sell a few games on eBay I’m buying one of these to run with my ps-2 and DD-3. Gated reverb is rare nowadays.
Where did you get yours? Plus GREAT video 👌
Is there reverb added to the delay setting around 5:40? Sounds to me like it's more of a delay+reverb mode than a straight echo . . . unless of course you're adding more reverb somewhere.
how u do all this effects? i mean in the video. & the 2nd question what is better rv 2 or rv 5 ?
your editing is fuckin sick dude good shit
Lovely shoegaze noise.
just the way i like it ;)
Nice video dude! I've recently picked up a Zander Circuits Exosphere reverb pedal. It's pretty wonderful. (and dreamy.)
that's a great pedal! did a demo when i was just starting out, don't know if you've seen :) ua-cam.com/video/TxEXWofmcHQ/v-deo.html
@@pedalpartners I'd forgotten you had done one - but there it is in my 'liked' videos!
With the Exosphere I have finally stopped regretting selling my RV-6, but the +delay setting on the RV series is really something special.
@@binface9 ah awesome haha, thanks again my man
I’ve been waiting for this one. Thanks a lot for the Gated reverb part, sounded phenomenal! I’d really like to know your technique to approach the guitar, you use some beautiful melodies in the videos, do you consider doing a video on that?
ah thanks so much man! maybe sometime :) i just improvise to be honest, let all my creativity out on these videos & then retroactively try remember what i played to turn into songs ;) thanks so much for your support again :D
i release music through dreamgazerreverberator.bandcamp.com & will hopefully have a band soon too if you ever want to listen :)
pedal partners Hahahaha nice! You always get some nice riffs going on. It’s just so inspiring. Great video as always bro
i'll join your band!
@@effective_cmpote heck yeah dude!
I got the "rv-6" I basically got it for the Shimmer🎹🎸🎧💫😵😎👌👍
good call!
well i just had to go and buy a second one after this, thanks!
ah that's awesome to hear. indeed, sometimes the lofi quality of these pedals is so charming.
You might wanna test boss-sy1, you can get super trippy sounds with it.
i'll have to try one!
I just bought one of these recently and was thinking of combining it with a PS-2. It's my first vintage digital pedal (the rest are all analog, except for a PH-3), but after buying it, and even though I like how it sounds, I started thinking about something that, although too obvious, had not crossed my mind until then (which says a lot): is the audio quality of these first digital pedals acceptable? I would like to know to what extent the sound quality is affected by the very limitations of their DSP and signal converters.
The fact that many musicians used this technology at the time tells me that it must offer an acceptable quality (even if it pales in comparison to today's digital effects), but on the other hand, logic tells me that according to the specifications that these effects offered (this pedal in particular features 12 bit, 31.25 kHz sample rate processing), audio quality must have been seriously compromised. How did they overcome this obstacle to gain the acceptance of the musicians and producers of the time?
What makes these pedals work, despite their limitations, is that they have a fairly limited frequency response. 31.25 KHz sampling rate is more than enough to reproduce up to 12-14 KHz with good accuracy, and if you think about reverb and delay sounds, you'll realise that's plenty. Boss specs list the frequency response of the RV-2 as 30 Hz-10 KHz at +1/-3 dB. The RV-2 was the first pedal I ever bought, and was key to my sound in the early 1990s, along with a PS-2 (Boss specs freq response: 80 Hz-6 KHz for the effected sound). Don't get too caught up in specs. Trust your ears.
@@gcvrsa Thanks, that was really helpful!
RV-3 is still my favorite. You kinda get a bit of DD-2/3 + a bit of RV-2.
it's great how each iteration is unique {& they're all great}
@@pedalpartners I love the gate on RV-2
Incredible. How comparable is a new RV option, like the 5 or 6? This is the perfect ambient reverb for me, but I'm not sure if I need the option of a spring setting.
i'm afraid i haven't tried either. but i know people love the modulated & shimmer settings on those reverbs, so go for one of those for ambient stuff!
I don't own the RV-5 but have used it plenty. But, I do own the RV-6 and the RV-3. In my opinion, if you're looking for an ambient reverb. I would go with the RV-3. It's gnarly for swells. Great for pads and such. It has 4 different modes of Delay + Reverb. Highly recommend it.
Still waiting for Johnny...
AndyDemos Yeah I’m still trying to figure out what this has to do with Johnny Marr...
do you like the roland jc 40 for shoegaze stuff? looking for a new amp for shoegaze and post punk.
i LOVE it. use it for all my videos so can highly recommend :)
@@pedalpartners thanks :) bought the rv2 because of this vid, really liking it so far
woah 7:00 sounds like a Sweet Trip song
haha people keep saying i sound like them, will have to check them out :)
@@pedalpartners yes please do, Velocity:Design:Comfort is full of shoegazey glitchy goodness
Reminds me of the last half of 'chocolate matter'
how are you making all that noise at the end
Overdrive after reverb and I'd guess hitting harmonics, pick scraping, and hitting the strings behind the bridge (if it's a Jazzmaster/Jaguar) or above the nut. And the tremolo bar.
The stereo helps make it sound weird, and idk if any editing in post was done.
Parts of it sound vaguely like the intro 30 seconds in to Aruca by Medicine, which at least partially was done on guitar amazingly (even played live).
Review oceans 11 ehx plz :(
would love to :D
I'm going to have to get mine out again. It's been sitting gathering dust for years.
such a great device, do it!
@@pedalpartners
Here's a vid. I'm using the slo plus other effects. Check it out. And you can take this comment off. Thx.
ua-cam.com/video/Wa1qaeoI9vQ/v-deo.html
Let's hear the noise when you adjust the gate time!
haha
I just got an RV-2 and I definitely noticed that :0
make a video on the proco rat! really diverse pedal and great for shoegaze
i'll have to get my hands on one!
This or the Slo?
Seriously, I'm gonna get one of them.
tough choice! the slö has larger reverbs, but i'm really liking the sounds on this one at the moment. gate & pan delay are really cool. tho the slö is always a fave of mine! sorry i don't think i made that easier for you!
@@pedalpartners hadn't even heard of the Slo until I saw your slowdive pitch shifter delay vid and it blew my mind. Can't get that sound out of my head, I go back to that vid and listen to that part of it (great job btw).
But this is a little more versatile and I love playing Smiths..
Damn
@@rounick28 thanks so much dude that means a lot, glad you enjoyed it :D
Why not both?
Brandon Banks cause two reverbs is overkill and 400 euro...
I must know. Even though they technically are not shoegaze, do you listen to Tame Impala?
they're my favourite band. been with them all the way. kevin is the best musician of our generation. looking forward to that album drop tomorrow!
{i have a tame tattoo you might be able to spot in some videos}
@@pedalpartners holy shit that is awesome. I completely agree, he is the best musician of our generation.
@RJ Marlow let's not get carried away
How you use 2 cables wih inpit and output?
Thnks for video
it's mono in, then stereo out into my jc-40
Does this mean my board is going to have another Boss pedal?
yes, yes it does
Why hasn’t boss figured out reverse reverb
i think it's on the rv-500
pedal partners it’s just kind of lame you have to buy a 300$ to get the desirable effect. When I have a digitech polara with 8 modulation reverbs including “reverse”. Idk I still would try that pedal regardless. Cheers
Have you ever thought of talking instead of having text?
Put alot of work only to be shy infront of others.
i speak in a lot of videos. i prefer just playing sounds though & i think a lot of my audience do too. i sometimes think that speaking in videos subtracts from my dreamy manifesto of pure pedal bliss outs ;) thanks for your input though! i'll be talking here & there in the future :)
@@pedalpartners Thanks for hearing me out, just wanted to hear what you had to say sorta did not expect a video with text. Really honestly reminded me of the early days of youtube. The guitar sounds sure were great just seems like you could be getting a larger audience without having us read. As a random viewer I tend to look at previous uploads but the text prevented me from binging as much as I would have normally would have to a new channel i've came across.
Thank you for reply and consideration to my criticism.
Its nice when youtubers are engaging to their audience.
Just hate to see you do all this work and not get as far as you could have.
I understand if you were a from a non english speaking country and thats perfectly fine!
Thanks for uploading the video made me interested in getting the pedal.
Really the best part of others sharing stuff on here you still got the point through :)
