  • Back before "Digital" was a dirty word, it was a promise of effects and capabilities previously only available in world-class studios. The effects of the RV-2 may pale in comparison to those bearing the Lexicon and Eventide name, but for guitarists finally able to bring Plate, Hall, Room, and Gated reverb to gigs and practices, it was an absolute game-changer. In this episode, we'll look at the first compact digital reverb pedal, the Boss RV-2.

    I’m telling you dude, all you need is to get shouted out by the Jhs guys or picked up by the algorithm to make these videos more popular. The film style is great, your writing is great, personality great, setting great, music is great. Now all you need is a bit of luck!

    The Reverb of Boris, as well as many other dronestars and shoegazers alike. With that plate setting it really does sound just like Wata's guitar whales. This can also emulate the reverb effects of Josh Homme's TCV-era solos quite well. I got mine half a decade ago and it pretty much ended my search for the best reverb (for my applications.)

    Another super video! I really enjoy it when you delve into how the pedal works to the level of technical detail you give. Thanks for putting out such informative and interesting content 🙂

    Picked up one of these last week. Can’t believe that it’s a 35 year old pedal. Still sounds amazing today! The delay setting in a stereo setup is it’s party trick!

    I was lucky enough to be gifted one of these a couple of years ago. While it doesn't stand up to the newer pedals in lots of ways, it has a kind of old school digital, almost lofi charm to it.
    The RV6, as you say, is an excellent pedal and even better once you discover the hidden gem that is Shimmer mode with the tone control on 0 - which turns it into a really nice pad reverb kinda thing.
    Loving the variety of pedals you're covering on the channel!

      I would say the opposite. The newer pedals don't stand up to these old units. Everything sounds hifi, clean, no noise, no hum, no aesthetic

    Great video (as always!!) Picked one of these up about 2 years ago & it's stayed on my board ever since (along with the RV-3) where others such as the Walrus Slo have come and gone. It's an awesome reverb, easy to quickly dial in a great sound and always sounds great!!

    great demo! I'm getting one of these to replace my TC Hall Of Fame because even though it's a lot more limited, I love the gated reverb on this better than the HOF. I recently fell in love with shoegaze/dreampop and there's something about those early digital reverbs that really do it for me lately.

    Beautiful pedal. Great review. I was just given one from my brother. I am using it on an acoustic, to deliberately bypass and replace modern amp modelling verbs (most of which do not sound anywhere near as good for a simple direct application). RV-2 is a sonic beast.

    i know johnny marr used this one!! i never understood why so many reverb pedals came with a gated reverb (since it seems to not suit guitar parts very well), but when i think back on some of johnny's parts, i could totally see him using that gated setting.

    I always keep a Bat-verb on my utility board. I mostly live inside a pair of headphones, so stereo pedals and reverb in particular are a must. I've got an RV-6, a Cathedral, a NU》X Atlantic, a TC Hall of Fame (mostly for kill dry) and a Behringer DR600 (mostly for that gate.) Love me some kill dry, some reverse, some Flerb and gated 'verb. Maybe some occasional Shim, anything that does a good plate or spring. Plus, Tera Echo. But, now I'm just name dropping...

    Loved your joke about the viewers dropping off like the graph. I “upgraded” from a hof to an rv-5 a year ago. Still looking for a better one.

    Excellent as usual. How do you like the jet stream? I’ve been eyeing up one of the purple ones with the 3 p90s. Is the trem good? I’ve only ever heard great things about Reverend but I’ve played very few of them.

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! The Jetstream has become my favorite guitar. The neck has a great thickness that I can play for a long time (and making these demos often has me holding relatively complex chords for a long time) without getting cramped up. It's also unpainted, which gives it a certain amount of texture without being overly grippy that I think is just perfect. If I were looking for another, I'd definitely try to find one with a neck like that, because I've got a Reeves Gabrels model and the neck kinda bothers me.
      The Wilkinson trems are great, they've spoiled me on my other guitars. I haven't had to do much adjusting on it, but it's been very easy to get it to just the right amount of tension where the arm is very useful. Both my Reeves Gabrels and Jetstream came with a little trem-blocker in the rear cavity to keep it decked so it won't bend sharp, but it's literally just a screw in a bracket with a nut so it can be reversed real easily. I'm not sure if that's a factory feature, but both Reverends I bought used from Guitar Center came with them. *shrug*.
      I should also mention that the neck pickup and all of the electronics have been replaced. My Jetstream came with a Seymour Duncan '59 in the neck, and it sounded alright, but I wanted something smoother AND the ability to split the coils which it wasn't set up for. This means I lost the bass contour knob, and instead, I made it Volume Volume Tone, with a push/pull to split the neck pickup, which is now a Seymour Duncan SH-2 Jazz.
      But yeah, Reverends are a great value. There's also a very wide variety available, so it pays to shop around. 3 P90's sounds like a great arrangement, that's what my Warhawk has, and the ability to combine Neck/Middle or Bridge/Middle to get hum canceling is super nice.

    I’m needing to save some board-space and really wanted to add a versatile-reverb with an integrated tremolo. I found the Fender Treverb & have it on the “to-buy” list.
    Are there any other reverb-trem choices under $200? I’ve spent tons of money rebuilding my rig after a divorce and love a budget-friendly quality-pedal. ☮️❤️🎶

      I honestly don’t have any tremolo/reverb pedals but the Keeley Trem-o-verb comes to mind, as well as the Mr. Black Deluxe. I don’t have any firsthand experience, though, sorry!

    Eek!I remember the old boss reverbs the plate and gated are pretty nice but the room and hall are kinda questionable but they refined them thankfully they were good for the time and didn't fall apart but we're very artificial sounding oh well it's much better than the DOD stereo reverb yuck what a shitty sounding reverb it sounded like a flanger comb filter set stationary with a ton of resonance they should have took the Belton brick approach and added a bunch of short delays together until the diffuse into a pseudo reverb like sound

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  Рік тому

      Good to know about those early reverbs. Yeah, part of the videos I watched talked about how they can get weird resonant peaks when reverb is implanted *technically* and not musically. Comb filters galore.
