This parachute trap could be installed on some of your own ships to stop people from stealing them, or in some ship cases can actually benefit the design. Could evolve into some new bizarre vehicles I'd say.
This is like one of those booby traps on NPC ships, if you don't hack the warhead hidden somewhere it will blow up the ship as you reverse thrust it with inertia dampeners. For people that isn't too aware of your ship's design it can be quite lethal.

Groups of 3-6 players working on a ship probably wouldn't even question the extra drone, assuming it belongs to one of their own guys. If you want to troll your own faction, you could also build parachutes and overridden gyros (but renaming them, to make them harder to find), and activating them via remote control. In addition to a few parachutes, maybe have one or two overridden gyros, a sensor and mine to blow it up if it's discovered, a program that activates once the vessel it's attached to exceeds 200m altitude...
r3dp9 if your gonna troll your own crew then why not just rename all of the important components of a fairly complex ship so the have a very hard time finding thrusters doors ect.

Perhaps, but the best thing to do in this situation is hold still and let the parachutes disengage, even if you take some hits in the process; you won't be able to flee with those attached, so that's about all you can do. As for control, you're probably right. I still don't think it would be terribly difficult to regain control if you realize what's happening reasonably fast and slow down.
The trick would be realizing what's happening. A lot of people don't even use parachutes, and even those who do may not remember that the parachutes disengage at zero velocity... especially in the heat of the moment.
if they almost stopped moving they would start to fall and land because the thrusters are not that powerful. and if the ship gets flung sideways the second the parachute diploid and you were simply trying to get to space then you probably would have no chance of recovering.
First off, most people will panic why their ship isn't under their control instead of thinking "oh it's a parachute trap I can slow down and get rid of it", as well as creating stuff like a gyroscope going totally haywire and not allowing the ship to go to a total stop. Secondly, this trap can actually make use of the concept. Whatever this thing can and will target isn't going to be a tiny and weightless object, and that object will need time to slow down or just trying to man up and go through it, which buys incredible time for fighters/similar class ships to swarm that object down. Thirdly, as long as the parachute trolling trap isn't detached, it can still deploy again if you set automatic deploy.
One flaw in the design is Turrets will counter you pretty hard and any smart player builds turrets. Id Turret my main ship just to protect from this and the gear being the front probably get shot to much to attach.

Not if this thing is very very heavily armored. A single gatling has problems getting through heavy armor and missiles are expensive. And it's just a trolling design don't be so overly butthurt about it guys...
When out in space, its always funny to attach some gravity generators to make their ship spin on them. Its even funnier them trying to figure out what is going on. Its always funny until it happens to you.
I think a possible fix for this( besides turrets ) would be a jamming device, expensive, short range, and for blocking remote control blocks only; everything could communicate through the grid.
I started using these a lot in the past few days and my brother learned to send decoy ships up before launching the real thing so what I did was I hid it inside his massive ship by hiding it in a hidden empty cargo bay and when he launched and I activated the parachutes it went crazy and he had no clue what happened.
you could put a turret and a grinder on there. First jam them and make them land,then grind open the ship to kill the grew,then salvage the entire ship and build more jammers with the material

I found a method of using cameras parachutes and remote controls in a different but similar way. I was sneaking in to my brothers base through a tunnel which connects our bases and I kept slowly editing his massive carriers which he was preparing for an assault on my base (our bases are quite far apart but I use a quick sideways elevator to get to him) so I put parachutes in his big ships as well as control aerial things and cameras at the front. I set off the parachutes on the vessels one by one as they approached my base and then used my secret weapon. My secret weapon being an orbital cannon which launches a missile which spreads groups of warhead across massive areas. He is still super p*ssed off at me after 6 weeks
What would happen if you stuck a bunch of artificial mass on instead? Maybe a timer on it, sensing the grid it attaches to and turns on the mass? It would require less mats, I think.

but it wouldn't crash as much (when the ship goes down it would pull the nose up and when ship goes up, pull nose down) the ship would just be wobbling uncontrollably, which may be useful but crashing is as well (especially with the ground eating ships whole)
if you have a faction base on the planet and one of your heavy ships needs help do to engine,power, or overweight you could in theory to save alot of the ship or use it to salvage ships and take them down into the planet

To build this in survival would be resource-taxing at best, if not impossible, since there simply isn't enough hydrogen produced by one oxygen generator to counter gravitational pull while proceeding at full thrust.
I tried this on a server with friends and forgot we had the speed mod and tiered thrusters put a t4 thruster on it and the landing gear drone became a sabot with a parachute
I'm thinking maybe you could make a really small rc drone that will seek the controls of the ship then it will latch on and drill to the controls then take over the ship
i did this, but instead of parachutes, i used clang (lots of rotors, pistons, and a grinder) it was bigger than this, but i was going after a giant mother ship that was about to break the atmosphere, I drill into the hull so i wouldn't be shot at by the turrets for longer than i wanted, then i activated the clang warhead...the ship spazed out, and it broke everything, and my game, it took 20 min to recover frame rate, but i got to see the debris of the once mighty ship, and my drone...XD...
Really trolly. Hahahaha. This can also be useful when capturing pirate amospheric cargo ships and landing them safely after disabling turrets and engines.
My mind went the opposite way lol what if you had a drone ship that used these to save other ships that get to damaged and start falling out of the sky... or use them to stop a disabled enemy ship from completely being destroyed so you can get more resources from them

Why not add a warhead so that you can blow up the dart so they can’t reuse it/don’t know what caused the crash.

The thing is, you can easily counter this by bringing your vehicle to a stop; parachutes automatically detach themselves once velocity is near zero.

Another idea is some kind of ship that disables other ships and pulls them in to orbit ( assuming the are flying close to planet)
Mobile Gaming And How 2s so a ship thats ouside of orbit and it basically locks on goes and tries tp steer them into entering orbit so they crash

you could also set a self destruct, which, if the ship crashes, will eliminate the evidence that you did anything
You can also create a system on your ship to launch these at enemy ship in planets

i'd say about 6 with 8 parachutes each per side

If an enemy ship is on your tail you can air brake with parachute and then remove the parachute and be behind the enemy ship
even if the parachute didnt knock the ship off course it will still slow it enough to not get into orbit
You could attach a warhead to blow up the prob after everything is finished so they can’t re program it

Honestly if i were to use this i would instead replace the parachute with a dozen warheads and just detonate to be a troll.
Warheads are at the mercy of being shock and damaged a bit to blow themselves up. Parachutes don't.
