Ah yes, the episode that I couldn't watch for years because the Polymorph scared the crap out of me when I was little. I'm loving all these Red Dwarf videos Dena!
I kinda like to think that Rimmer got so angry that the light beam shot right up to his head and was about to burst out of his forehead just in time for the Polymorph to catch it
Fun fact. The scene where the Polymorph changed into Lister's boxers and starts shrinking which made Kryten's to remove them from Lister made the entire audience laugh so much that the creators couldn't hear what they're saying.
There was a comic strip in the Red Dwarf Smegazine set during season 6 that had the 2nd Polymorph disguise itself as Red Dwarf and its crew (prefiguring Season 8 by 6 years!) Unfortunately it did it too well and the duplicate Rimmer ended up not sealing the drive plate properly and it blew up because comics
I think “Red Dwarf” references the “Alien” films so much because out of all popular space-related film & television at the time “Red Dwarf” aired, “Alien” is the one the show resembles most. Look at the utilitarian ship design, the lived-in appearance, the protagonists being ordinary working stiffs rather than soldiers/scientists/criminals, the rarity of contact with alien civilizations, and the depiction of space travel as commonplace but still limited in scope and requiring stasis for long trips. All of these are features “Red Dwarf” shares in common with “Alien” much more than shows and films like “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” “Dr. Who,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “2001: A Space Odyssey” or “Blake’s Seven.” Of course, “Red Dwarf” has referenced some of these others, but, as you point out, it references “Alien” a lot more.
A lack of fear will probably free you to do many things. With no fear of repercussions, including death, a noble man will do crazy things. Theres plenty of noble and fearless characters in fantasy and other writing, IE the valiant knight. Its likely Lister was meant to be emulating them.
I grew up watching Red Dwarf here in the UK, it was a viewing staple with my dad and younger brother (I cried at the season 6 finale because I thought it was OVER!) My partner had only ever seen clips so we decided to binge it up to where the original run ended because that's where I dropped off. I came across your video series while researching Back to Earth onwards out of interest and I'm fascinated with what you have drawn from it and some of the points you've made! I always thought Back to earth seemed a bit poo so I sucked it up and put it on... We're now up to series 12 and I have a warm fuzzy feeling of seeing Red Dwarf episodes I've never seen before, I feel like a kid again watching it. I can't wait to get to your episodes where you dissect those ones seeing as it's all so fresh!
I've seen things that I didn't believe, like little details missed by the wash of laughter, like Kryten petting cat, like hearing Lister saying twat and hearing swat" all those moments will be lost in time, like tears...in...rain. Time to laugh.
I enjoyed this episode a lot. It is somewhat ironic, because when I first saw Red Dwarf on YTV in the late 1980's, there were some of the obscenities and sex-related scenes cut. This entire episode was cut from the YTV version of it. But with it on the DVD made it worth waiting for. One note: Shortly before Rimmer and Kryten leave with the Cat, Rimmer says "Let's get Lister and get out of here." He should have said "Cat" instead of "Lister". Another note: Just as the three, Kryten, Cat, and Rimmer are coming down the lift, they are standing in different positions then they are when the camera cuts to the side of them.
From what I heard, this episode got a lot of hate in regards to the clitoris joke. One parent wrote in to complain how she was watching the episode with her daughter, and was embarrassed when asked by her kid what it meant.
The other reason for the warning at the beginning, was the use of the words "twat". Well, it was the 80s. 😁 The word is extremely versatile. And it wasn't a "sausage" on Lister's plate, it was a kebab. 😆😆 The Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society is the greatest abbreviation, ever in comedy. I love this show.
I think this was the second episode I had seen of red dwarf( Psirens being the first one I saw) and it got me confused a bit from it being more of a comedy than most other episodes, thumbs-Up
But the Ministry of Interstellar Nightmarish Greasy Extraterrestrials has taken the fold against the Alien Xenomorphic Extraterrestrials of Worldly Omnipotence Under New Directives.
This was one of my favorite episodes but the part that makes me laugh most is a part i don't think anyone else picked up on, when the Polymorph is seducing Cat and he goes on that monologue of how you have to keep your guard up at all times, then says 'come on babe' to it you can just for a second see the Polymorph roll its eyes, for some reason that makes me die laughing its like its going "Come on man at least make this A BIT challenging!" X)
There is actually a video comparison on UA-cam of the scene of the Polymorph posing of Rimmer's mother, with the actresses original voice. And the Remastered dub over with a more seductive voice.Curious to know which you prefer if you ever view it?
I agree with you that Lister & Rimmer’s emotions drained and behavioral changes don’t make much sense. I would have gone with fear for Rimmer and . . . apathy for Lister? Is apathy considered an emotion?
Cyborcat lol ^^ Oh btw You never mention that the opening for season 1 and 2 was so depressing. Those season it begins with almost tone that make's me feel that there was no hope for them...then in 3rd season is so up beat and cheery, thought I share that with you.
+lainpain03 Hmm, well, I know I mentioned that the pilot was kind of depressing. Tho I didn't really think to compare the first episodes of the first three seasons. Good point.
Cyborcat Oh when you said that I thought you where just talking about the ship I must of miss you talking about the theme song. Now that I think about it the lyrics to the end theme is actual kinda dark. PS see the full version to tongue tie and Love it..one of my fav song now.
+lainpain03 Oh, I misunderstood you. I never got around to mentioning how the opening changed. I probably should have, but I think the Season 3-1 video was already running long so I left it out.
I don’t think there was a double Lister in the UK broadcast - weird how there are slight changes made to the episodes (either to broadcast in the US or just several years later)
when they did the episodes for digital format they made a number of changes to certain episodes, improved special effects but also alterting some episode stories. in polymorth they didn't show the second lister sequence but said the second polymorth was so dumb it hid in listers clean sock drawer and starved to death.
You're right about lister sans anger, but I think this episode gets away with it where parallel universe didn't because this is piss your pants funny whereas parallel universe had very little in it that would actually get a laugh. Plus this episode makes it clear that the characters weren't themselves while parallel universe expected us to believe that that bunch of a-holes were the same characters as the ones we know except gender swapped.
Glad I bought the unaltered originals on DVD before all the remastering crap started, Doug turned into another George Lucas, once you've finished a product just leave it alone. Interesting to note Cat doesn't turn into Dwayne Dibley here either nor does Rimmer turn into Ace which is what the second polymorph converts them too once those characters debuted and became popular, bit inconsistent with the continuity of what these creatures do to them though, I would've liked to see Quiche guy back he was funny.
The warning at the start is a joke. It's ment 2build up the tension so you think it's gonna be scary......like in the Halloween Simpsons when Marge tells u not 2watch. It's funny it confused you.
Oh I love that quote, "Let's get out there and twat it!" They made that into a t shirt and I've got one.
+ZionKraze I need one of those XD
I had one .. about 3 million years ago.
Ah yes, the episode that I couldn't watch for years because the Polymorph scared the crap out of me when I was little. I'm loving all these Red Dwarf videos Dena!
I remember having quite a laugh when watching the shrinking underpants scene. It was truly a crazy moment. lol
One thing I've never seen anyone mention is how the Polymorph was physically able to attach itself to a soft-light hologram.
+OxBigly2010 Heh, true. Rule of funny, I guess.
That's a possibility. Personally I always thought that the polymorph achieved that by turning its proboscis into light.
i think the novel said it actually got to the computer storing rimmer's personality and fed on it.
I kinda like to think that Rimmer got so angry that the light beam shot right up to his head and was about to burst out of his forehead just in time for the Polymorph to catch it
@@archiefraser8927 that's not a bad shout
I actually have a Fearless Lister bobble-head on my shelf, it comes with the tiny Polymorph too, got it next to my Inquisitor Bobble-head
I bought that Lister for my brother at Cardiff Comic Con, Great piece I think NECA made it WAY back in the day
I am quite impressed by the number of "give quiche a chance" t-shirts on Fleabay.

Yeah, without fear he volunteers to let it eat him so that it can be killed while it's killing him. That's pretty noble.

It's great to hear I got somebody to watch the later seasons. The show isn't what it was, but it's still pretty solid, IMO.

Definitely one of the funniest ever episodes. You left out the leafleting campaign quote from Rimmer, which was probably the funniest of the episode.

"And if that doesn't work, then I'm sorry, but it's time for the t-shirts"
Thanks for the video. This is my absolute favourite episode of Red Dwarf :-D

Lister basically becomes Vasquez from Aliens!
It's feels like the ending with the polymorph Lister smiling at the camera is meant to be a reference to Micheal Jackson's Thriller Video.
The other reason for the warning at the beginning, was the use of the words "twat". Well, it was the 80s. 😁 The word is extremely versatile.

After Rimmer loose his anger he look a bit like Gordon Freeman.

I liked this episode. Polymorph: the insane shapeshifter. :)
In the UK the word 'twat' is quite a versatile word
There was an episode of Farscape with almost the exact same premise.
+Shawn Ravenfire I remember that one! It immediately hit me as "Hey, this is Red Dwarf!"
Polymorph is my favourite ep
It's a shame that the Committee for the Understanding of Non-Terrestrial Fright-inducing Lifeforms As a Pacifistic Species had been disbanded by then.

I wish someone would make bazookoids in gmod
And UnderTale kinda ruined the "ALPHABETTI SPAGHETTI!?" moment.
Oh my god, that style of handmade shirts with the iron on words never made a resurgence in culture after the early nineties and i have no idea why
In the adio book, this story was connected to both marooned and white hole and ended sadly for one of crew

You'd think the second polymorph would have died of starvation before old age.

That’s because the second polymorph sucked out rimmer’s bitterness and cat’s coolness. The first polymorph sucked out their actual emotions.
