I've found out that the reason this episode was written was that Grant and Naylor had realised just how stupid it was that an incompetent screw-up like Rimmer be given the job of repairing something that could kill the entire crew if repaired incorrectly. Their first thought was to retcon away the accident being Rimmers fault, but they couldn't figure out how to do this without messing up the continuity. They then went with their second idea: explain that the person really at fault for the accident was whoever gave Rimmer the job of repairing the drive plate in the first place because they should never have given such an important job to such a total screw-up.
Kryten getting bored of Rimmer's holiday snaps is like me when i have to watch the same health & safety video at work, whenever the machines get modified.
I never understood why they didn't just put the pod in an airlock and wait for it to open. if it was Barbara Bellini, let her in; if it was the simulant, jettison it out into space. either way, free pod.
Simulants don’t need oxygen, so it would have still been alive and fully awake after being ejected and could have potentially found a way to get back to red dwarf and break back in.
The idea of the justice field is very Clockwork Orange, in that it forces you to be good for your own interest, not because you care or feel any remorse for the people who would be affected by the crime you commit.
Rather, it is similar to law and order in real life Most people obey the law not because they believe in it but because they're afraid of the consequences We're the equivalent of a hamster in a maze conditioned through fear
I really like this retrospective you're doing. Very few people I know even know about this show, so it's great having a fresh point of view applied to it
This episode is excellent, both the line delivery and the physical comedy (walking in the boots/ Cat's perfectly timed pratfall etc) are done so well XD
They re-used the set of Justice World in the finale for series XI as the medical facility. You'd think people smart enough to build the Justice field would make it smart enough to distinguish between self-appointed guilt and criminal guilt. I just noticed the sim's gun says 'make my day' on it lol I could never tell on my old VHS copies. So much nuance.
On the subject of the Cat: In the 'making of' of the tongue tied music video, Danny is instructing the girls who are supposed to be cat-people to not blink because "cats don't blink". That always made me wonder if he actively tried to blink as little as possible during the filming of Red Dwarf, even though it's very unlikely anyone else would notice. (I can't tell even after hearing him say that)
I remember that too. Whenever I think to look for it, I hardly ever catch him blinking. He really puts a lot of work into getting that character just right.
I dunno, all it makes me want to do is smack Kryten. You can't consider yourself nicer than ANYone if you're downright eager to twist the knife this hard.
Lister makes sense, since his actions took place millions of years ago so I would assume the statute of limitations have long passed, while there's no statute of limitations for murder generally. It's weird, the Justice Zone applies to anything that could be considered criminal, even ignoring mitigating circumstances (like a crazed simulant openly desiring the deaths of its victims). Also, it appears that the Justice Zone doesn't work on verbal crimes, like threats or entrapment.
It’s probably easier to program the field to punish any violence, rather than distinguish between assault/murder and self defense. After, self defense isn’t necessary if any attack is only going to harm the assailant.
Holy crap, it just hit me. When Rimmer said, "I could happily kill him if he was on the job" I thought it was a followup to killing him while asleep (asleep on the job). "On the job" in slang means having sex.
Just a short note. The actor playing the simulant, Nicholas Ball died yesterday, aged 78. His acting career was spread across six decades in both theatre and the small screen. He had a niche in crime dramas and also featured in many comedies, hence his appearance in Red Dwarf. Another treasure lost to the UK acting community.
Something you mentioned earlier about Red Dwarf starting to come into its own in Series' 3 & 4, it's kind of strange that both it and Star Trek: The Next Generation, two shows that started around the same time, both hit their strides in their respective 3rd & 4th seasons. Question though, when were you able to watch Red Dwarf on TV over in the States, BBC America didn't launch until 1998.
Good point about Red Dwarf vs. TNG. I originally saw Red Dwarf on Netflix several years ago. I've heard that some PBS stations carry it, but I don't think my local one does/did.
I never noticed this before but in the scene where cat gets plated you can see holly in the background pulling a face of pure disgust. its in the top right corner of when he's saying "shoot me in the head" don know why but it bemuses me
This is the first episode of Red Dwarf and thus confused about a few things. Since I was young and there was no "close caption" option, I missed a couple key points and was confused. If you think about it, the whole space mumps thing could be take out and not much would be lost.
Oh my Gosh. I never knew there were reviews of the episodes on UA-cam. :D I'll need to watch more of these. You're very good at it. :) I love this show. Can't wait until 22nd of September for Series 11. Also I love the Cat too but yeah I agree he is a jerk. Haha.
You're right about the comment about American football. But there are also more subtle references to it in many early episodes when Lister talks about, "Zero-G football." The poster on his bunk is clearly an American football reference not football/soccer.

Seeing as most illegal drugs already have some negative repercussions for the user, probably nothing besides removing all positive traits, i.e. you can't get high in the justice field.
I noticed that the justice computer messed up the maths when passing sentence. 1167 counts 8 years per count It should be 9336 years, not 9328 He missed one
@@simony2801 i didn't mean that, the computer counted 1167 counts of murder (all the 1169 crew minus himself and lister) and sentenced him at 8 years per count, it said that was 9328 years but that's only 1166 8 year terms.
Cyborcat well I watched all of the seasons and the later ones got kinda boring and it was like the last 3 eps that got better for me and I never knew there was a season 11 or 12 coming
Cyborcat yeah but even so lister isnt really the brightest bulb in the shed and rimmer did know about it so he had a malignant intent when telling him to do it so the crime is atleast partially his
It's not illegal to just tell someone to commit a crime, assuming you didn't threaten them and they had the presence of mind to refuse. Clearly Lister DID have the presence of mind because he hesitated. He knew there would be some kind of repercussion, but he chose to do it anyway.

Given that the captain was really Dennis the Doughnut Boy, naturally he’d make bad decisions.
Then in Series 10 they threw away the continuity anyway
@@abbyalphonse499 What do you mean by that?
"I'd describe the accused as a git" That sums up my boss

Love the fact that Holly (on the monitor) sees the simulant and then she ducks.
Kryten’s face when Rimmer is lecturing him always cracked me up
Justice field; red dwarf is chock full of fascinating concepts like this.
This was the first ever episode of Red Dwarf I saw. I didn't know any of the characters or the back story but I knew I now loved this show!! :)

Um, the pod would be sucked out into space as well, so no pod.
@@Foebane72 strap it down
Simulants don’t need oxygen, so it would have still been alive and fully awake after being ejected and could have potentially found a way to get back to red dwarf and break back in.
Or maybe the escaping air wouldn’t have been sufficient to suck a very powerful Simulant out into space.
Love this episode, and your Vlog on it. Wish we could have seen more British terminator types again, he was pretty stylish 😢
“Name”?
“ Dave Lister”
“Occupation”?
“Bum”!
I wouldn’t wish being Rimmer on my worst enemy.

So by activating the pod, the Cat is basically reenacting the Lady or the tiger...
I've always loved the cyberpunk themes and atmosphere in Red Dwarf

He would have been useful on the set of Scott Pilgrim then seeing as they banned blinking to give it an anime feel
Hmm, no mention of the next episode? So, what is it?
Only joking!
I've never seen the next episode before, no one has, but I'm guessing it's called "white hole".
A WHITE Hole?
Every view has an equal and opposite REview. A regular episode sucks funny comments out of the universe, a white hole episode returns them.
So what is it?
Rimmers trial is one of the funniest things I have ever seen.
It's gotta be one of the best moments in the series.
I dunno, all it makes me want to do is smack Kryten. You can't consider yourself nicer than ANYone if you're downright eager to twist the knife this hard.
This was actually the first Red Dwarf episode I ever watched. Sold me on the series and still a favorite of mine.

I thought it meant being on the toilet?
I have absolutely no doubt in my mind, that Rimmer could blast somebody with a bazookoid while they're in the loo... Talk about sitting ducks...
Well, if it's good enough for Tyrion Lannister...
You have to love the times on this show when every character clearly shows they can think at times. Also, I wanna meet a RD cast member just once.
