What I really liked about the burning fake guitar scene was the huge buildup played for laughs, when Rimmer gets back, he says he smells burning camphor wood, and Lister panics thinking that he is busted in that deliberately slow manner as if Rimmer realized something, but then turns around and assumes that the guitar was made from Camphor wood and that "It cost a fortune!" so that made him inspired to burn the Napoleon Figurines. Which totally pays off when he sheepishly take the real guitar out of the locker. lol! XD
Having since read "Lolita", I can affirmatively say that it is one of the unsexiest books in existence. The prose is beautiful though! Maybe he was saving a page about the scenery?
@@callinater6133 That doesn't help since the size of the book and font can change how many pages there are. But I agree, it can't have been anything sexual, or at least I hope not.
My theory on why Rimmer is wearing the coat is that it's a hologrammatic backup battery pack. It's the only thing it could be since lack of power doesn't seem to be affecting his lightbee at all. Haha.
How was she more likeable? Male Holly got frustrated at times but was never outright nasty and was very funny. Female Holly was much more hostile, such the despicable way she snapped “UH, WHO WOKE HIM UP?” in dimension jump.
My theory on why Rimmer starting focusing on the golf course and fees was because that he couldn't handle the information, Lister opend up and shared that he was assaulted as a child, and Rimmer didn't know what to say or do. Everything fell into place on how and why Lister is the way he is, and instead of processing it Rimmer internally went "Nope! Not dealing with that!" Buried it deep down and started making his usual self defense quips.
In the Remastered version. The shot of Cat and Kryten walking through the snowy tundra, when they find Starbug. Was replaced with a digital sequence of Blue Midget landing next to the crashed Starbug.
I think the creators never saw eye to eye because at least one of them thought Holly 2.0 fell into the stereotypical ditzy blonde stereotype. I don't really see what's wrong with that but hey-ho.
While I did like the episode, I noticed a few major inconstancies with it: In several parts, Rimmer is shown touching a button to call for help. He also states that he opened a cupboard to find some dog food and he also could smell camphorwood. These three things are inconsistent with Rimmer's being a hologram. He shouldn't be able to touch or smell things, yet he does here. Also, where Cat is more in dislike with Rimmer than Lister is, it should have been Cat and Rimmer to get marooned. We already know Lister and Rimmer are marooned in space, so why have it that they are marooned on a planet somewhere? Why not do it with the Cat instead of Lister.
He said he _found_ it in the tool cupboard, not that he opened it. He could've just stuck his face through the door. Then, of course, you have to consider how holographically projected eyes can still see on the other side of walls and doors. The smelling thing is a bit more difficult. The only thing I can think of is that maybe his lightbee has scent sensors and he's not actually smelling it, his lightbee is recreating it _for_ him. Previous episodes have shown that he actually has something like a sense of taste since he can eat and drink hologrammatic foods and beverages.
Have you read the second Red Dwarf novel Better Than Life? They put twists on this episode so great I wouldn't want to mention it here in case it could spoil it for you. Highly recommended, especially if you like Audiobooks because Chris Barrie reads it!
I alwaya felt sorry for Rimmer in this one, I mean some of Rimmers hang ups come from him not being able to trust, And Lister for all his high ideals, show Rimmer u can't trust anyone.
I'm surprised that they decided not to bring back Hattie for series 9-12. Yet again I guess they decided that Holly was surplus to requirements at this point with Kryten fully taking over her role. Still I really wish they'd bring her back full time.
Locked in a freezer episodes save money too which no doubt was a reason they did it since episodes like Backwards and Polymorph probably ate up the series budget with special effects. The Goodies used to do that regularly where at the end of every season they'd be trapped in their house together just talking cos the budget had quite literally run out.
I think using 2 escape ships was far more practical, more storage space for equipment, and a backup ship incase the first becomes inoperable (oxygeneration unit anyone?)
Rimmer is making the story of Sandra up, or at least hugely exaggerating what really happened because he's trying really hard to play the part of a guy who has had more than one encounter. At least according to the books.
what’s interesting is that there are 2 starbugs so it seems weird that Kryten and Cat didn’t take starbug 2 and instead took one of the Blue/white midgets.
*whsipers conspiritorially* I actually preferred the Hattie Hayridge Holly as well, though that might have been as I started watching in season 3. I think the main reason is that she was more believably "separate" from the crew. Norman Lovett's Holly was great (especially in "Queeg"), but a lot of his best moments were riffing off the crew in my opinion. Hattie was also more believable as "non-Senile Holly" in "White Hole"
Speaking of attires, I consider those to be my favorites: Lister: Seasons 3 & 4 Rimmer: Season 6 & 7 Cat: Any kind of attire, but it must be Red Kryten: USA version. (Don't get me wrong. The USA version sucked, but Kryten's costume makes it better for Robert to move easily. I call it Kryten's "Inner Shell")
Strange that they would do an episode like this, given that the bunk conversations were ditched after the first two seasons due to Craig Charles & Chris Barrie not getting along.
My younger self didnt like this episode due to the lack of any action action. It really was just a rimmer/lister episode of them talking. Also major continuity issue with Rimmer being able to smell the camphor wood burning, and then in bodyswap is happy that he can smell again.
They kept using meat lockers because for a long time there was this design assumption that they wouldn't open from the inside. So once locked in the characters were stuck until rescued
@@CyborcatExactly! :) I suppose, with a replicator, anything's possible! Someone replicated some dog food and left it in Starbug. Or maybe a pre-core-disaster Starbug pilot was keeping a dog on board, on the sly of course, and he tucked a can of Earth dog food away, for emergencies! It's fun just to speculate ;)
I did attend a Q&A with Craig Charles and Danny John Jules, and when I asked about the dog food scene, Craig said it was cat food...he probably wasn't serious.
Oh, I second that, definitely. Hayridge just has such a naturally funny yet still cool demeanor, whereas Lovett to me usually came across as trying too hard to be comedic. Not to mention, Lovett, for all his popularity, is associated with the first two seasons which are usually considered to be weaker than what came after it, while Hayridge is associated with most of Red Dwarf's "golden years" from season 3-5. So yeah, I very much prefer Hilly!Holly - wish she had been brought back at the end of season 7.
Nightman221k She was a lot sterner than Lovett Holly and that made her funny in her own way. Hayridge seems very popular among the fans either way. My sister and I liked her better as kids.
I know this video is old but you forgot to point out that Lister just threw all of the money on the fire instead of rationing it the money would have lasted for six or nine hours
This and the episode where Rimmer forcibly body swaps with Lister are the most mean spirited episodes I've seen. These two and the other episodes also being mean-spirited in other ways made me really dislike Series 3.
I'm sorry did you say you preferred female Holly over male Holly? Thankfully I've seen almost all of your videos on Red Dwarf already. If this was the first I'd stop watching them right after you mentioned that. Norman is Holly. Dumb, loveable, funny and unpredictable. If she came back on that watch I wouldn't have punched the air in celebration. If Queeg was made with her....Well they wouldn't because female Holly just couldn't play practically jokes on the crew. Her version never did anything other than just dumb. Sorry for my rant, still love your reviews but you have gone down a notch in my estimation.
"You can't have been a full member of the golf club then!"
The way Rimmer comicaly misses the point of the conversation slays me. 😆

Kryten, get me some shears. We're going to do to Lister what Alexander the great once did to me.

It was basically a memoir of a pedophile nothing more

Interesting.
I Agree, I think Hattie was an excellent Holly, more endearing and more likable.
Love them both equally, both have their own unique quirks about them that find so funny
How was she more likeable? Male Holly got frustrated at times but was never outright nasty and was very funny. Female Holly was much more hostile, such the despicable way she snapped “UH, WHO WOKE HIM UP?” in dimension jump.
Both are good.
I like both
Lister's jacket was worn by the last companion of classic Doctor Who

Why would be have been "assaulted"? I'm guessing his partner was about the same age as him. Who was assaulting whom?
In the Remastered version. The shot of Cat and Kryten walking through the snowy tundra, when they find Starbug. Was replaced with a digital sequence of Blue Midget landing next to the crashed Starbug.
Brilliant episode!
I completely agree about Holly! This one just feels more benevolent and sweet. I wish we saw more of her

It’s possible the cupboard was already open. And I believe it’s canon that rimmer presses things with his light bee.
imagine of the indignity of the Cat being obligated to eat dog food

Normally im on Lister's side in most episodes of Red dwarf. However, with the episode 'Marooned' I feel really sorry for Rimmer, and F you Lister

She certainly would have been more eager to return than the other actor.
Great videos, can't wait to see the rest. I'm particularly looking forward to season 6, some very interesting and weird episodes to cover.

Why would there be dog food in the inventory if animals aren't allowed on the ships? ;)
Oops XD Maybe left over from the last time someone tried to sneak an animal onboard.

I think I would rather freeze to death than be marooned with Rimmer.

I admit the "ew!" part was funny on second watching.
When ever I get my hands on an episode, I love it while I watching it. But afterword's I just feel really confused.
Now that I think about it shouldn't listers guitar be destroyed from the millions of years of time after all his guitar is made from wood
That's an unpopular opinion?
Here are some of mine: Best K: David Ross
Best sets: the all grey ones
Best Holly: Hattie
"An unpopular opinion"
I suspect that opinion is waaayyyy more popular than you think.
Given that Rimmer spends more time talking about the car, I believe he was lying about losing his virginity there.
NOW!..
...That's all I can remember.
I lost my virginity at 13
