That city employees voice made the story better for some reason.
Good ol authentic North Carolina accent
Is it just me or does that guy kind of have a mild resemblance to a shaven Abraham Lincoln?
Thought he looked more like a younger Hugh Hefner.
Great piece of storytelling! Had me fooled into thinking it was some sort of mystery house. Good work.
That is a great way to conceal a pump station. I am a commercial diver and have dived on many potable water jobs. I would love to dive on something like that. It is a wonderful idea to hide something like that. Usually they look totally different and can be kind of a eye sore in public areas. Great video!
"it's just the right thing to do" hasn't crossed the US governements mind in decades.

These are governmental installations.
This is such a great idea. I wish more cities would adopt this method of hiding water pump stations. Very awesome!
I lived within a mile of that house and passed it got to work or school everyday for over 20 years. I never had a clue. Seemed like a nice house.
Strange that they mentioned my hometown in the same sentence as Tampa, FL. Shoutout from Janesville, WI
At first I thought it would be some ghostly thing about this house haha
Whoever is voicing this has the perfect documentary voice. Fantastic.
Thank you for sharing this this is extremely interesting.
Kind of looks bigger on the inside.
Twss!
Extremely well put together video. Commentary was spot on.
Great video, well done. Intro was fantastic.Had me thinking 'House on Ash Tree Lane?' Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Great Story, never even thought about this before.
Pretty informative. Never thought about this be4
Cool. I used to work doing the Plc controls for pump stations in the Sacramento area.
really interesting and a great idea !
Jesse Eisenberg (from the Social Network) voiced this video?? LOL
There';s an episode of "Grand Designs" where a couple converted an old pump station in Britain into a real home. It works BOTH ways!
This has been done in Edmonton Alberta. An Epcor(formerly edmonton power) substation in a residential area was converted to home. In the 1920's and 30's, Edmonton Power's sub-stations looked exactly like a home if it was in a residential area. They were brick houses and you see the odd one every so often along with the Edmonton Telephone exchanges which were much the same. They look neat and tidy!
Neat video. I enjoyed it.
Wow, what a thrilling and fulfilling reveal. Only on NPR would that be considered a pay-off.
Awesome story! But to be honest the beginning gave me a bit of shivers. Thought it'd be something creepy or sinister haha.
If they are concerned about vandalism they should not have made this video exposing what the structure is and where it is located.
Huh! Now, that was just downright interesting!
The vandals will never know it's there .....unless they happen to be among the 192 thousand plus who saw it on UA-cam.
I'm so tired of always hearing the negative things the government is accused of. It's nice to see the government doing something positive like this. I would love to hear more positive ideas the government has put into action.
Nice ive seen severs "tree" antennas in my city and birds during summer love them they also hide them as rocks in thr mountains to keep the tourists from noticing them
Wow..this is really cool
That's pretty cool AND clever!
"It's just the right thing to do" - "'Eh so fazer a coisa da maneira correta""
In Raleigh, NC, there's a house or what looks like a house. But inside there is a water booster pump station from the public utilities. Check this video to know why...
Em Raleigh, NC tem uma casa, ou algo parecido com uma casa. Mas dentro dela se esconde o sistema de bombeamento de agua da cidade. Veja o video e descubra o porque....
Similarly, the Fairmount Water Works in Philadelphia wasn't 'hidden,' per se, but rather covered with 19th century architecture and turned into a tourist attraction
Crap! I thought it was going to be something nefarious. :-)
the narrator almost implies a sinister motive
A better example is the radio towers near the freeways that are disguised as trees, or in southern California, a palm tree.
Although a radio tower looks less suspicious than a fake tree.
Wow. Very cool. I had no idea. Indeed a great varmint :)
And the one in Louisville has concerts there regularly. :)
That's pretty cool!
Come to Cal and we have these all over LA county. Here they are oil wells that happen to be pumping in some nice neighborhoods.
There's a tiny "house" down the block that we always knew was a pump station. We live on the hill. I was hoping this video was about something more controversial than an old pump station.
I thought for sure this was going to be some crazy house nobody could get inside.
Who is the narrator? I keep thinking it sounds like the guy who does Pleated Jeans. Anyone know?
Nice story.
We have one in Warrenville. It looks like a house like others in the area. There is a drive way used by trucks delivering chemicals because it also treats the water and removes iron.
good show, but I have to disagree with one point, I grew up in Louisville, and nobody ever was fooled by the original water pumping station being disguised. It was built at a time when Greek architecture for public builidings was in vogue. Even in the 1800s everybody knew it was a pumping station, the historical record is pretty clear on that.
This is old news. Our city has had these things for a long time.
Okay, u win. That's pretty cool
There is something like this in Brooklyn. I cant put links on you tube, but check out scouting new york. I believe the one in brooklyn is a brownstone (townhouse for you non-new yorkers), it looks like a house but its power station or ventilation station. Just do a google, it should come up.
4:38 where in Janesville is that? That dont look familiar
this is nothing new actually. Los Angeles, NY, Big cities have to have these types of places to do what this one does, Regulate water pressure, others have Phone relays, cable fibre connections. it's wildly smart, they even disguise cell towers to look like trees. Kudos to them for being really neat :)
Eric Mennel is a beast reporter!
This is Becca's husband...
Now that’s an old-school NC accent lol
There is one here in Hendersonville, TN where I live. Well one I know of..lol
Not at all where I thought this was going :D
This kind of hiding utilities in urban environments is very common.. I guessed this might be an electrical substation. Close. Subs are commonly hidden in facades like this. Not sure why it's such a mystery. Many councils and local residents won't accept this infrastructure near them if it's not embedded like this.
I knew it! Pretty cool;-)
To be honest I don't know what I was expecting but the reveal seemed like such a letdown... this really does not seem out of the ordinary or unusual to me.
Wow I was hoping for something else
Lol expect some vandalism after this video :D Vandals be like huh no vandalism yet? hell no :D
So now that they know, how many days do you think before this place gets vandalized?
(in jest) Vandals don't listen to Public Radio. They'll be ok.
Jes Webb i totaly do listen to radio
Okay, you got me!
Pretty cool though...
Utilities in camo...
I was expecting something sinister at first. go figure.
Reminds me of the Los Angeles Urban Oil wells; blogs.getty.edu/iris/subterranean-l-a-the-urban-oil-fields/ - neat stuff!
A nice looking house though.
When I live next to a pumping station, I know it's a pumping station, but when I live next to a haunted house, I better wish it was a pumping station.
Why not? Going to spend same amount on a garage Anyways, it was stated that everything was for lack of better word's ** dummy windows, doors so I am sure they used cheapest material possible. Then I thought of the up keep in that machinery if it was left in the weather - just terrible. So I believe the building the fake front was awesome
Interesting there are some cell towers I've noticed that are supposed to look like pine trees but not only are they not very realistic looking they stick up way above all the other trees!
NYC has similar buildings that are disguised as brownstone
bigger on the inside?
Outstanding and creative, but creepy. I've seen the one in Janesville, WI. Now I know what it is. But cell towers in cacti? What else are they hiding in plain sight from us?
Government? Creative? Right... more like Government employees have a "hide and go seek" fetish.
What the hell are you rambling about?
Never knew.
If the purpose is to hide it then why show to more 533,874+ people on youtube?
alguien que pueda decirme que es esto????
Imagine the cost of such a fake structure? They would have had to put together a 250k study group as to which style home to build and then years upon years of planning.
it doesn't have a driveway on wade.... because the driveway is on beaver dam rd...
I searched up haumted north carolina. This came up. Lol
The narrator sounds like Jeremy Scahill.
well that's great. lets keep the vandals away but you give them the house number!
That's cool
in canada they also have these
Anyone notice he sounds kind of like Jesse Eisenberg?
neat!
It seems very privileged
How is this news??? Almost every town has something like this.
+PinkFrogOnAChain It's interesting for someone who doesn't live in USA I guess.
COOL
What language do they speak in Raleigh?
American like the rest of the US - dumbass
pterafirma Wow... You're just extremely rude aren't you?
Lol at first i tought: omg is it haunted? But then i tought no that cant be... And then they revealed the secret and i was like owhh lol hihihi
King of the Hill anybody?
im scared
i thought it was haunted hhaha
Not hidden plan, no more !
Aw, I was hoping it was an abandoned meth lab!
This is very typical in London to hide train roads.
I live in that house
Then why in the world are you telling everyone where it is?
oh great i live 1 min from here
Toronto has a ton of these! Not that big of a deal....
Lies...I heard someone screaming for help at 3:13
Weird !
here we go again !! here comes the conspiracy theorists....
