Return of The Phenix

- Peter Frampton played the same single Gibson guitar, known as the “Phenix”, for nearly a decade until a cargo plane crash when it was thought to have burned in the crash. 30 years later the Phenix reappeared as was reunited with Peter. Journey with him as he tells the story of the guitar and works with the Gibson team to restore it once again.
I sat in the audience tonight in Minneapolis April 1, 2024 and listened to that man play this guitar and cried my eyes out. I will never forget ever.
Spent my lifetime seeing shows and in 60 yrs of life have never been affected by a show life April 1.
Those of us who are older, grew up with people like Peter in our lives, though he wasn't aware. Our lives were immeasurably better for it. We can only hope he understands the impact he made and that we appreciate his gift to us.
Well put. I was 13 at the time. Big influence.
We feel like he does.
AMEN 🙏🏻
Saw him in Framptons Camel many moons ago. Awesome guitarist.
I couldn't have said it better.
Dear Peter, my name is Marco Ciargo, I was born in Caracas in 1961 to Italian parents. In my adolescence Frampton Came Alive was quite an experience and being able to go to your concert in Caracas was amazing after having seen you so much in the pictures of the album with your three pickup guitar while I was listening to you with my headphones. In that year I had a band called Resistencia and I was one of the guitarists, we had released our first LP and we had many concerts around the country.
One of them was on November 12, 1982 at the baseball stadium "Cesar Nieves" in the town of Catia La Mar, a town very close to the airport where the cargo plane crashed with your team.
That day in the afternoon while we were setting up our equipment on the stage where we were going to perform, some fans of the group approached us to meet us who lived in the town of Catia La Mar, while we were sitting talking with them in the stands of the stadium the conversation of the Frampton plane crash and the regrettable loss of all the equipment of the group came up, especially the loss of Peter's Les Paul, when one of the guys told us that a friend of his came to the runway after the accident and recovered the burnt case with Peter's guitar, I imagine that he had not been alone in arriving to the place to take advantage of what to take and that he had sold the guitar to someone who lived in Curacao or that he had taken it.
This remained an urban legend that lived in the uncertainty of the facts.
I remember that it crossed my mind to go and buy the guitar to give it back to Peter, I was 21 years old at the time and he could have rewarded me with another good guitar, but I never worried about that happening because it would not have been so easy to find it.
When I saw for the first time on UA-cam the video of Peter's guitar found in Curaçao I said to myself that it was true then, that the guitar was in Curaçao.
I was very happy about that reunion because in a very distant way I felt involved in that story that seemed to be more implausible than true.
BEYOND BELIEVABLE. ROCK N ROLL HISTORY
This has to be one of the best, certainly the most well versed comments, or I should say dissertations, I have ever seen on youtube. This comment should be in the editorial of a newspaper, magazine, or both actually.
I was 16 in 1976 and I remember that summer well! Frampton comes alive tracks were playing on almost every radio station, it was a glorious summer. Thanks Peter!
me too! 16 that year...i remember going to high school and it was required for your record collection...everyone had it.
I was 18
I was 11
I was 16 also .The Best time ever .Cheers
Peter Frampton is not only my favorite musician, he's an incredible human being, full of virtues, he loves animals, he loves his fans, he values them and shares aspects of his life with them, he is very humble, he is a tremendously talented, brilliant man, I feel immensely lucky to belong to a generation that has been privileged with hismusic and presence, thank you, thank you very much for filling our lives with joy with your beautiful music
He took the Humble, out of Humble Pie
Same...couldn't say it better!
Summer of '76 in Blackpool. I'm a poor student with no money and a very cheap stereo. I walk past Harry Wiseman's HiFi shop on Dickson Rd and hear live music through the door. I walk in and stand in front of the speakers. My first taste of Frampton Comes Alive. Harry approaches, I fancy the Toshiba cassette deck but can't afford it. 'What can you afford?' He asks. I put a deposit down, pay the rest in installments. I also buy the album and have enjoyed it now for over 40 years. Nice one Peter!
This is the best! If anybody deserves a story tale happy ending like this, it’s Peter Frampton.
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!!!❤️
What a true humble gentleman. All the stars lined up to give him back exactly what he deserved. Love this story
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!!❤️
This is one of the best guitar stories ever. To get your best friend back after all those years after thinking it was gone forever. Can tell how happy it makes him talking about it
I was smiling all the way through that.
What a truly nice gentleman. “Frampton lives forever”
I actually played "Comes Alive" the other day. I have the original 76 vinyl and it still sounds awesome to this day, even my neighbors appreciated it, well, they had no choice.
Even the cat wanted to hear what PF had to say. Saw him at Anaheim Stadium summer of 1976 with my sister, my girlfriend and best friends. I will never forget how his music personified my high school years. San Clemente '77.
I'm glad that the Phoenix has come home. I'm even more happier that you've done the blues cruise and did a jam with Joe Bonamasa. The song "My guitar gently weeps" is such a cool jam. Thanks for staying true to yourself Peter. It's such a hard thing to find these days. I wish you peace and keep jamming my friend. 🎶✌️🎤😎👍🎸
One of the happiest stories in Rock history. Randy Bachman and Jimmy Page have had similar reunion stories.
McCartney too.
Randy Bachmann has almost 500 vintage Gretsch guitars...and still climbing
Myles Goodwyn had a Gibson Melody Maker returned after is was heisted some 30 plus years ago . Brian Setzer has had some of his Gretches just grow legs and walk off . Most of Setzer guitars where located and returned . Tom Petty as well because the guy who stole them ,wasn't smart enough to stash the instruments back , hocked them the day he stole them. He got busted for the theft .People with criminal intent just ain't smart . Now days with social media and camera's everywhere , it's hard not to get popped.
Cheers 02/21/2022
John Fogerty and 'Acme'
@@RideAcrossTheRiver Yes! And also Mark Farner’s reunion with his Messenger guitar!
I was a young woman when Frampton Comes Alive was released (just a bit younger than Peter) and I was so in love with the guy---as millions of other women were. But he is/was so much more than a pretty face. He's a fantastic guitarist and musician and I feel fortunate that I'm part of the generation that so much great music!
Oh Lord, have mercy: My earliest childhood friend, Jonathan. He was working for my brother's band, who at the time (1978) had just recorded an album for A&M records, when he recovered my brother's lost Les Paul. Soon after, my brother opened for Aerosmith with that Les Paul at the Boston Gardens. 2 years later (1980), Jonathan's on the flight of The Phenix with Peter Frampton. And to think I once drove the members of Foghat to the airport to catch a plane. They wisely sent their eqiupment ahead by truck.
Fondly remember a state fair performance in rainy Washington state some years ago. It had been pouring down rain and Peter came out on stage and said "Oh, thank god you're here." The band then proceeded to play a ripping set. No place I'd have rather been on that rainy day. Thanks Peter! 👏🙏
Peter Frampton …not only one of the great fret masters of our time but , as you can see from this wonderful video , one hell of lovely guy.
Been a fan forever Pete…God bless you.
Comes Alive has to be my favourite album of all time. The Phenix story being one of the sadest, then happiest stories of all time in popular music. How you felt when you got it back after all those years, we can only imagine. But after Gibson got finished with it I believe it is one of the best, if not THE BEST guitarist/instrument pairings of all time. You are my fave guitarist Peter. Keep safe, best wishes, DaveW 🎸
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!❤️
I'm 67 now and remember buying Comes Alive when I was 19, It was all i listened to for a year. I was lucky to be at the Beacon Theatre in New York in 2013 when he played the entire album for the first time with the ressurected guitar. Just in awe!!
His new book is absolutely awesome. I read it then listened to the audio book read by Peter himself. He does a fantastic job and makes the experience even better. What an incredibly kind and honest man he seems to be. And to think of all the people he's played with throughout the years. Mind boggling. I'm super glad he got the Les Paul back.
I joined the US Army in 1976 and ended up playing some Frampton songs at Ft. Campbell in 1977 on an Aria black Les Paul copy with some GI buddies in a local band. Fond memories!
Man, in HS everybody had either the record or the 8 track, or both. It was everywhere. This guitar definitely is one of the top guitars in rock history, up there with Page's LP and Gilmour's strat. I've seen Frampton a couple of times, he was great both times. Never tire of his music.
Or Page's doubleneck.
Well said brother
What an incredibly honorable guy to give Peter that guitar
Frampton sure is modest about putting out one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. I listened to Frampton Comes Alive over and over again in the ‘70s like everyone else, and also took my high school sweetie to see him live during that period.
I’m glad he got his guitar back.
"Comes Alive" was massive. Everyone had the album and it was played everywhere. That guitar 🎸 is a treasure. An unbelievable story in the halls of music history. 🎶 🤘 ❤ 🙏
Kids today cannot even begin to understand just how huge that LP was. It is the sound track of a generation.
Absolutely, I was in the eleventh grade when it was released. Great musical memories ❤️.
Wore that cassette tape out!
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!❤️
Frampton comes alive was huge back in the day, absolutely massive, plus he was a very good looking bloke....
For those of us who grew up in the 70s, there is only one unmistakable sound of Peter Frampton's guitar. It had its own clearly distinct sound. So cool to learn about the story I never heard, and that he's got his baby back in his arms again. Especially after his sublime guitar solo ending of "Do you feel like We Do?" on Frampton Comes Alive. I finally got to see him in 1995.
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!!!❤️
Because of the association with Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Jan Akkerman (Focus) and Peter Frampton, the ebony black Les Paul was my favourite guitar. I saw Frampton live in one of his first solo shows at the Top Rank Club in Liverpool in 1972 (opening for Humble Pie, who headlined). He was sensational. Getting his beloved guitar back was just meant to happen!
Peter, in describing that album to younger people, I've said "you can literally hear him smiling through the music". It wasn't us smiling (though we do), it was YOU.
Love me some Peter Frampton, my first ever concert back in 1977..... What a night that was!!! My brother took me and my boyfriend to see him, on my 16th birthday!!! WOW!!!!!? 🎸 JAMMING AND PASSING SMOKE....LOL A FIRST FOR EVERYTHING....😁
Frampton is IT !
Thx for all You Do…
Peter Frampton is still my favorite musician ❤️ My first concert to see him was in 1978. Of course a poster of this gorgeous man was on my bedroom wall as I was about 15
😆 🤣 😂 let the good times roll! His music.lives in my heart. So many memories attached to his songs...
This is the best version of the story of The Phenix I've seen up to this point. The way this video is superior (for me) to other tellings of this story is the inclusion of Mark Mariana, the man who gave Peter the guitar, and his perspective. He tells us more details about the guitar, the backstory of how it was acquired, repaired and used for a brief period of time. Finally he explains how and most importantly, why, he gave the guitar to Peter as a gift. For me, this is the missing piece of the puzzle, and brings us full circle.
Congratulations Mr. Frampton, you deserve all of this : being given the guitar from your friend Marc was a very kind and humble gesture, and after the accident and for so many years getting back the Les Paul is heavens gift. Only good people can have these kind of presents. And for sure you are one of them ! Loved your cats to ! God bless . Cheers from Brazil.
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!!❤️
I was 15 when Frampton Comes Alive was released, and I was completely in love with you! Your music, your voice, your smile, that hair! We’ve grown older, but when I saw the smile on your face when you saw the Phoenix back, ready to play, it took me back to my youth. Frampton Comes Alive is still an album that makes my heart so happy every time I hear it! Side note: Love your cat. Tabby cats rock!
I was 14 in 1975 when Comes Alive was released. What a great sounding album. I became an instant fan and have remained so over the years. Ive been through a couple copies of the album after wearing them out and just last year found an original pristine vinyl album that takes me back to 1975 again. ✌
Comes alive is the soundtrack of my high-school years. Class of 80. Thank you Peter. 😊
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!!❤️
What a great story!
I'll never forget the first time the needle came down on my copy of FCA! I still have it. I definitely count you as one of the artists that inspired me to play. The first time I mashed a wah pedal it made me think of you Peter. Thank you for the wonderful memories. I'm glad you got that treasure back.🎸🎵🎶
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!!!❤️
A class act. Giddy as a school boy talking about getting this beloved instrument back. Can't help but like the guy.
Peter Frampton, I saw you in Chicago back in the middle to late 70’s. It was an outdoor show. Don’t remember who else was on the bill. Y’all are rock legends! KEEP ON ROCKIN!
I had to buy Frampton Comes Alive two times due to wearing them out. Great when CD's arrived. What a gracious and perfect humble gentleman and great human being. What melodies have stemmed from his hands have been and always will be heaven to our ears. I wanna jam with Peter, he has always been my dream jam buddy but hey ho... 😊
Peter Frampton was my very first Concert! I just turned 14 years old so I was able to see him live, at The Poliedro de Caracas, What a Great Show! .
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!!❤️
Probably the greatest live album ever recorded.
And whether you like it or not, it will, along with the music, will be what You're best remembered for. Peter, that album stands alone.
You guys set the standard for LIVE.
Love this story, Peter! 💝 Makes my heart happy you got your guitar back.
Was amazing you felt you had to learn to play other guitars all over again when this guitar was lost. The attachment one has for the tools of their trade…well, any such loss is totally huge! Monumental.
I see you love your kitties, too! 😊
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!❤️
I know you were so thrilled that you got it back!
I'm so glad you got it back!! Comes alive is still my favorite album!!♥️♥️♥️
Peter Frampton is an amazing musican. I've been a longtime fan of his work. I've seen him live, on his birthday, in 2018. Cheers! ✌️
Ah mate ... I knew Phenix's story, but seeing all these details about her resurrection, sure brought a smile to my face... Thanks Pete, for sharing this beautiful story
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!❤️
Peter Frampton is just a great guy, so interesting, and of course a great guitarist 🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Happy homecoming for the Phenix! 😍
This axe was just meant to be in Pete’s Hands.. good man that gave it to a good man. I saw you with Humble Pie as a warm up to Grand Funk in 1970… Cleveland Public Hall .. I was 14.. the whole evening was amazing.. from what I remember..
I saw Peter at Cobo Hall in Detroit and a show at Eastern Michigan out door concert in the 70s, and he and his guitar sounded great. Great story and I am glad you got it back.
Bill Graham Presents...Day On The Green... it was magical... Thank you for the memories!! Xoxo
In 1975.... Peter Frampton was HUGE!! His songs, his music, his guitar defined Rock n Roll! We went to see him in Hartford Ct...live and outdoors!!! And that guitar is "Unmistakable "... Congratulations Pete..." I Feel Like You Do" 🎵🎶🎵
Saw him in ‘76 when I was 14 - Three Rivers Stadium (Pittsburgh). It was Gary Wright, Frampton, and then The Beach Boys. Gary Wright was great, Frampton absolutely killed it and then... we left completely satisfied. What a show 👏👏👏✊🏼
Perfect !!!!!!! Wow as AMC princess Ana says : Kind people do Beautiful things . Wow I could just cry tears of joy !!! Always Loved you Peter Frampton !!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
I was young.... 17 old... Come Alive..... thank you Mr Peter from Italy
Thank you, Peter, for making so many people happy, both with and without Phenix...
This is the greatest Frampton interview i ever seen,.. this should be a TV special on Biography, or History, etc.. an incredibly epic story and life’s journey, featuring Rocks greatest Guitar, Guitarist, Album, Band, etc.. All the stars were aligned for this moment. No other album is as much of an adrenaline rush as Frampton Comes Alive, THIS is, the Pinnacle of Rock & Roll🎸🥁🎹🎤⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
That is amazing that it's history was known for 30+ years . The gentleman who knew it needed to be reunited with Peter thank you . What a excellent video . Thank you for this history
How many cats do you have, Mr Frampton? 🐈🐈🤗🤗
I just found your channel. I can’t begin to tell you how many amazing memories I created with your magical music playing in the background. The only way I can begin to describe your music is magical!! It can never ever be recreated. Once in a lifetime a wizard comes into your life. Thank you wizard Peter!!
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!❤️
That guitar was his arms and hands; one of the most iconic guitars ever - along the lines of Brian May's Red Special. To have gotten it back - though it needed a bit of work - had to have been supremely satisfying to Peter, to say the least. I'm so glad it is back where it belongs. We guitarists all have that "one" guitar. Our one, true lover.
Bottom line is Peter Frampton rocked us big time with that Live album that still rocks us today. Thanks man...killer video!
Great Artist and Great band, this music shall last forever.
Saw him in a park in Washington DC. 1976 I couldn't believe my luck as I was working my way across the U.S. from the west. When I heard it was an informal free show I was even happier. He was one of my favorite musicians.
Please keep going Peter. I am 61 years old and back in 76 that album changed my musical life. I’m not a musician but music hits me in the soul. I only saw you live once here in Syracuse New York in 2019. My buddy and I were blown away. I would love to get another chance. God bless you!
I was 14 when I first saw this guitar! I wanted one so bad I would draw pictures of it, I finely got one when I was 50! so glad Peter & Jimmy got their les Pauls back!
Saw you and that nice guitar in '77 at the Sam Houston in Houston. To this day FCA takes me back to '76 and just how huge that LP was.
Best live album ever.
Just gotta love Peter Frampton, what a nice guy ......
Peter you are such a huge influence on my playing thanks for all of your great music over the years! I just wanted to say how much I love your kitties looking for attention in this video! Lol
I THINK IT WAS 1971 WHEN I SAW YOU IN HOUSTON PLAYING WITH HUMBLE PIE MY FIRST CONCERT I WAS 9 YEARS OLD I WENT WITH MY OTHER SISTER I HAD A BLAST.
Proper first concert!🎶
Incredible story. Some of the topics they touch on brings me back to my life experiences with guitars dating back more than 60 years. We didn't know these guitars would end up being worth so much money in the future.
Thank you Peter
I was 13 years old when I bought Frampton comes alive, I wore that album out ! Still today it’s one of my all time favourite albums ! Love and peace
One of my favorite people, thank you. and thanks to mutual friend Bob Heil.
Rock On.
Congrats on getting your partner back, she sounds great.
Thank you for all of the wonderful music.
Frampton Comes Alive is on my playlist.
One of the best ever Live records
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!!!❤️
This man is such a class act!!! Thanks for jamming for us all this time!!! I was 13 years old when Comes Alive was released!!!
Like a true Phoenix/Phenix! Amazing wonderful story!
I saw PF live in 1971 and was very excited and he delivered. Great man.
Impressive.
What an enjoyable musician that isn't full of himself,,,I remember buying PF Live album in the late 70's,,,,it was ahead of its time
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!!❤️
Very nice great stories! Thanks 😊 🙏
Great story
I’m 28. A large part of my generation doesn’t realize how big Frampton was.
My mom always told me in 1976 everyone had the comes alive record.
For good reason too, it’s iconic.
great story!
I had a 59 Les Paul Jr. when I was a kid in the 80's. I bonded with it. It was stolen in 1993 when I was 20 years old. I quit playing that day. I mean I'll pick up a guitar every few years and noodle around but I'm still devastated over losing it. Someone painted it matte grey but left it original. It sounded so fat in distortion. It sounded perfect without it. I miss it
I’m sorry that happened. My dad bought me a 59 lp jr in the late 60’s and it was stolen in the early 70’s , but I got it back. I was very lucky. It sat in the evidence closet at the police station for months and it seemed like years. Get you another one!
It was 1977, I would lay in my living room floor with headphones plugged into a giant furniture looking cabinet with a middle area with lift up door that had a turntable, I would listen to Frampton Comes Alive for hours every night…great memories!
Peter, you will be remembered for the class act that you are. Thanks for the joy.
I have 50 years of listening to your wonderful music and never had the chance to see you live, could you please consider to come to Mexico City and delight us all with your God given gift? Saludos ....
I am extremely happy, for you, Mr. Frampton!
From a fan of yours, and the Mighty Humble Pie!!!! 52yr. Fan....🍁
One of the most treasured guitars in rock history in its rightful owners hands. A fantastic journey back in time!
Great story and Peter is such a cool guy. Back in the early ‘90’s I got a chance to talk with him for a few minutes after a set he did at a local street performance in Dothan Al. Just a regular guy like you see in this video with crazy writing, playing, and vocal skills. Thanks for all the great music man! 👍 (I still listen to Lines On My Face at least once a week and so do my co-workers 😉)
My favorite song of his
@@robertblanks9602 "You can't erase a dream... You can only wake me up" 😴
Great story, Was lucky enough to see Peter a few times. The last two being on the Finale tour in 2019. Great shows! His band was very tight. Peter is most likely one of the most underrated guitarists ever! Exceptional talent.
I've seen.Peter with his guitar before and and after it's great 👍 beautiful
Great sound but then look.whos playing it
Framptons a master of his own unique talents and style
Hope he's doing well
I got emotional just watching this. I was only 9 years old when 'Frampton Comes Alive' was released but I can still remember how much of an impact it had on musicians across the country and me personally. It's one of my favorite albums of all time and as an "old man" now I realize that Peter Frampton is one of the best guitar players ever. I'm glad I got to see him live in 1996 at the Lakewood Amphitheater just outside of Atlanta. He sounded EXACTLY like he did back in 1976 on his album.
Peter you are the best. So glad you got your guitar back after all those years. What a story, truth is stranger than fiction.
I was blessed to see you live for the Frampton Comes Alive tour in the 1970's in Miami AND the anniversary tour when you played the whole album again at Hard Rock in Hollywood Florida. Who knew you'd get your guitar back? AND who knew I'd hear Frampton Comes Alive TWICE? I am blessed.
You are a guitar genius, a gentleman and a wonderful humble person. Rock on Peter, & know we love you. ❤
Congratulations on being inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It's about time.
SO brought tears to my eyes! I know what that connection with a guitar is - and what it means to have it stolen from you! By whatever means! Just devastating! But to have it returned after all these years? Awesome!
Got to see Peter in Houston, but had followed him for years! Have always loved him and pray for him all the time since he announced he wasn't touring anymore! Even more now that I ended up completely losing all feeling in 1/2 my fretting hand!
Hello I am so sorry if this sounds weirds but you wrote such a nice and wonderful comment on here and I like your comment. I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you I'd love to be friends
This is Great!! We finally get to see Mark !!!
Me, Rockin' The Fillmore with Humble Pie in '71.
Solo, Winterland opening forThe Doobs then headliner twice, second the DYFLWD gig.
Abit later, Day On The Green with Skynyrd...."Do you want to see me jump off this piano?"
YEAH.
The LP .
I read Mark has been gifted every prototype of this guitar thru time. Peter never forgot him.
For those of us who play electric guitar, this was truly epic and for me it was very emotional. I saw him in the early 2000s at my military base. He was still able to bring it. What a fantastic guitar story/history.🤘🤘🤘😲😲👏👏👏👏😍
Hello there👋👋, how are you doing today? Hope you had a wonderful day Today? God bless you!❤️
I always loved Peter's tone!
The two busiest days of the year for Sam Goody (the old East Coast record store chain) were Memorial Day and Labor Day, for which they always had their biggest Sale. They would choose one blockbuster album and put it on sale at below cost. I'll never forget the year it was "Frampton Comes Alive." Reg. price (for a double album) was $6.98. That day, it was $2.98. Needless to say, the lines were out the door. They had boxes and boxes of them piled high right inside the front door.
