Tools Needed:
🧵 Pattern Paper
🧵 Ruler
🧵 French Curve
🧵 Tape Measure
🧵 Pen & Pencil
🧵 Sharpener & Eraser
🧵 Marker
🧵 Measurements
Measurements Needed:
📍Waist Circumference
📍 Hip Circumference
📍 Hip Depth
📍 Crotch Depth
📍 Thigh Circumference
📍 Length of Shorts
Steps:
1. Draw a T in the centre of your pattern paper. The vertical line represents length and the horizontal line represents width.
2. On the vertical line measure and mark the length of your shorts and square out from both sides of the line. This is now your thigh line.
3. Mark your hip arc (hip circumference / 4) on both sides of the horizontal line. This is now your waistline.
4. Measure and mark your hip depth and crotch depth from the top of the vertical line. Square out on both sides of the line. These are now your hip line and crotch line.
5. Measure and mark your hip arc on the hip line and crotch line on both sides.
6. Connect the waist, hip and crotch line using two vertical lines on both sides. The right side of your pattern will be the front of the shorts and the left side of the pattern will be the back of the shorts.
7. Measure your front hip line and divide it by 4. Extend the front crotch line by that much. This is your front inseam.
8. Measure the back hip line and divide it by 2. Extend the back crotch line by that much. This is your back inseam.
9. Extend the thigh line on both sides to meet the respective crotch lines.
10. Front dart:
- Divide your front waist line and hip line into two halves. Mark and draw a line connecting them. The front dart should be 3” long. Measure and mark that from the waist line. - The front dart should be 1/2” wide so measure and mark 1/4” on both sides of this vertical line. - Draw your dart legs from the two marks on the waistline to the end of the dart.
11. To minimize the waist line to fit your waist, measure the remaining length (that is your front waist line minus the dart) and divide it by two. Measure and mark this from your inseam and outseam.
12. Use a ruler to draw a straight line from the waistline to the hip line, then use a French curve to add the inseam curve to the crotch.
13. Use a ruler to connect the crotch line to the thigh line.
14. Use a French curve to draw a curve that will blend with your hip line on the outseam.
15. Back dart:
Divide your back waist line and hip line into two halves. Mark and draw a line connecting them. The back dart should be 4” long. Measure and mark that from the waist line. - The back dart should be 1” wide so measure and mark 1/2” on both sides of this vertical line. - Draw your dart legs from the two marks on the waistline to the end of the dart.
16. To minimize the waist line to fit your waist, measure the remaining length (that is your back waist line minus the dart) and divide it by two. Measure and mark this from your inseam and outseam.
17. Use a ruler to draw a straight line from the waistline to the hip line, then use a French curve to add the inseam curve to the crotch.
18. Use a ruler to connect the crotch line to the thigh line.
19. Use a French curve to draw a curve that will blend with your hip line on the outseam.
20. Measure and mark 1/2” seam allowances all the way around your front and back shorts pattern before cutting.
21. You can cut out these patterns and retrace them on fresh pattern paper so you can have allowance all around or you can indicate on your pattern that 1/2” needs to be add to the outseam when cutting from fabric.
22. Lower your front inseam by 1/2” and raise your back inseam by 1/2”. This is to compensate for your booty at the back of your pants and flat at the front of your pants.
23. Waistband: Draw a rectangle the length of your waist / 2 + 1/2” for seam allowance. The width of this rectangle should be 5”. Draw a fold symbol on your pattern which indicates that this part of the pattern should be placed on a fold.
24. Fly extension: Fly piece A - Draw a rectangle 9” long and 4” wide. This piece will be folded in half vertically once it’s cut from the fabric. Fly piece B - Draw a rectangle 9” long and 2” wide. Use a French curve to add a J shape to the bottom.
25. Cut your pattern from the pattern paper.
And that’s it!

thank you! that’s an honor 🤩
Love the tutorial but I am a bit confused on how to calculate what extra space needs to be removed on the waistlines to make them fit after the darts have been drawn in. Could anyone explain how to work this out please. Thank you 🙂
Love the video but confused on how to calculate the dart measurements when deducting for the waist.
Thank you!
Thank you!

Hello😘 can you pls. explain well at 4:40 to 7:00 because that is the only thing i dont get clear..thank you so much😍😘😘😘
was about to ask the same question. 😅 i got a little confused on that part too, but the rest of the tutorial was easy to follow 😊
Thanl you vwry much
you’re welcome!
very useful video many thanks
I still do have a question, as I am not very familiar with the notions - when you make the pattern, you said 'waist to tight' measure, but when you show how and what to measure there is no 'waist -to-tight' given/specified - would you please make a short note what this effectively is? many many thanks!
Can you do a simple elastic waisted shorts pattern? Thank you!
I’m posting that one in a few! 😇
Excellent to tutorial. Thanks but what was your waist measurement pls
Wow, fabulous video and exactly what I was looking for!!! I love drafting patterns using my own measurements! Your instructions were so clear. I am curious though, what kind of fabric did you use? It looks like a woven. Is there any stretch in the woven fabric? Also, where would you build in the ease if it is just a plain woven fabric? (How many inches of ease would you add and where to make sitting and squatting comfortable?)
thank you! you can add about 1/4” of ease at the hips. Also, I used a non-stretch cotton type of fabric.
Really detailed and interesting video 😍. I really wanted to see how you joined the pattern pieces to make the shorts. Do you have a video for it?
in what way do you mean join the pattern pieces?
@@sewquaint yes, the making of the complete shorts.
Amazing explanation, it was really easy to make the pattern and now I'll go and watch the next video. I'm so excited to make them!!!
I’m so happy you found it easy! ✨👏🏾 You must be a really fast learner. Can’t wait to see the shorts you make. Send me pics! 😆
@@sewquaint I'm excited tooooo
I really enjoyed your video, and I've subscribed to it. I have a question please, when you were taking your body measurement, hip, thigh and crotch you measured from your waist and after adding the band to it, the short is still at that length. Are we suppose to deduct the band width from those lengths, if not won't it affect the fitting of the crouch since it will be longer than it was measured.
Thanks!
@SEW QUAINT. pls answer this question 🙏
@SEW QUAINT. Also are we to measure from the band to the crotch or we deduct the band which can be 2 inches before we measure the crotch and full length?
Amazing video thank you! I am wondering how this would work with a non-stretchy material how it would fit over hips while putting it on if the waist is already cut to size? Could someone please explain? Thanks!
Add 1/2” allowance to all sides and 1/2” ease for a looser fit. You can always adjust it to fit tighter afterwards if you want that.
Is there a video of you sewing these shorts?
Great video...I love how you draft both the front and back together... its easier to understand. Can I make this for a child using the same concept or would it be different?
I believe you can use the same concept once you have their measurements. Try it and let me know how it turns out.
& thanks! 🤗
@@sewquaint thanks for the quick reply will try and let you know how it turns out 🙂
If you have old portable sewing machine can you give one .I want to make like your ,very easy you make and perfect nice tutorial love it God bless .Thank you for a blog.
I’m happy you love it and I’m happy I could help 🙏🏽
Hey great work just wanted to know did u make tht bag too?? If yes would love to see how? xoxo
Great 👍👏 tutorial
Can i ask if this method can i use also for kids size?
yes! once you have their measurements
@@sewquaint thank you so. Much
Great tutorial! I'd like to make these out of stretchy material for my Halloween costume-- any tips on how to adjust the pattern besides negative seam allowance?
I would say use the elastic waistband shorts pattern instead. It’s perfect for stretch fabrics. This design is better for non-stretch fabrics
Here’s the tutorial for that ua-cam.com/video/rX3ic_dxH1o/v-deo.htmlsi=yXFy0buyXgZQlhsP
Hello dear, please by thigh line do you mean thigh circumference? Wonderful video.
hey! yes, that’s what I mean. But the thigh line only represents a half of that.
I would like to read the.description please
Was testing out different patterns to see which works easiest me. Did you went ahead and add the half inch extra for the dart when you were cutting?
I didn’t but you can
Love the info but fyi the intro volume compared to the voice over is crazy! I thought I was going to blow out a speaker because I had to turn it up to the highest setting just to hear you and then the intro kicked in blasting out the phone
Hi! Thanks for this! I have been looking for a tutorial for a shorts pattern and this is by far the easiest to follow! I have one question. Is the waist to thigh measurement at 1:30 same as the length of the shorts at 0:47? So if you want to make the shorts longer do you extend the waist to thigh measurement?
hey! thanks for watching 🙂 I appreciate it. yes they’re the same and that’s definitely how you’d make the shorts longer. Let me know if you have anymore questions! 🙏🏾
Thank you for this
The bag thooooo
What’s the story with the bag 😻😻😻😻
When you measure , do u measure in inches and call it circumference
Hey! Awesome video super detailed!! I love it 😻! Just a quick question do I use the same pattern if I wanna make wide leg short? Should I just extend the crotch and thigh line?
thank you! I’m happy you enjoyed it. Extend the thigh line to meet the crotch line. You can let the crotch line stay as is.
Hi. Could one extend this and use it for full pants?
What if I don't want darts in my shorts?
I'm sorry but could someone please explain further the reduction in the waist.
gosto muito... pena que nao percebo muito ingles...:(
Should my hip line be lower than my crotch line?
Nope. The hip line is higher than the crotch line.
wht if I want the shorts a little longer
hey! draw the thigh length to whatever length you want it to be and follow the steps as usual. I could do a video on how to do pants tooo
@@sewquaint So not a pant length but like shorts to the knee area
the side seam should be straight as possible. in professional pattern it is straight, most books are wrong it kept secret it took me 8 years to have a best pattern drafting formula for men's and women's shirt, pant and jacket.
Hey, are you Jamaican? I heard an accent. 😊😊😊
yeah I am 😆
@@sewquaint 😁😁😁
you sound Jamaican
