  • Trigger Warning: This video mentions sexual assault.
This is the 3rd and worst movie in the Twilight saga in my opinion. Today, we’ll also look into some other characters like Rosalie & Jessica to get a break from the love triangle that never ends. Remember, having narcissistic traits does not automatically make someone a narcissist. How do you feel about Eclipse?

Rosalie’s monologue makes me think that she was very excited to grow old, see her beauty fade, and still have someone love her. It must be devastating to be in eternal beauty and never have that confirmation that you are valued for something other than your beauty

@@StephAnya here's a little rant about Jacob because i can't stop thinking about it after watching the video lol.
i believe Jacob changed that drastically from the second book to this one because of his new pack's influece on him.
By the end of the second book he was still confused as to what his new "role" in the pack was and if he HAD to become one of them and do and believe the same things just because he turned into a wolf, like he suddenly didn't have a choice anymore and i even remember he left his oldest friends in the world without saying or explaining anything to them and started hanging out with the pack.
And after that new feeling of belonging to a group faded and the cullens came back he got soooo angry because he was feeling trapped and without the ability of making decisions and choices about any aspect of his life, and he used all that anger and fed his hatred towards the cullens just to put the "blame" on somebody, to make someone gulty that now the could even hide his thoughts from other people and was literally physically forced into doing what the alpha of the pack ordered and bella didn't want him and he even puts the blame on them that he became a wolf in the first place. So i think the was a loooot going on with Jacob that resulted into a personality change in this book and it had nothing to do with the author not wanting us to root for him and bella.
i also believe wholeheartedly that he was trying that hard to "win" bella because he needed that victory in his life, that in the middle of all that was going on getting her would back up the hopes he had of still being worthy and human enough and part of the "good guys". i also think that he's struggling with thought that he won't even find "the one" and without the imprimation he won't find anyone willing to be with him now that his a wolf, and he sees that bella doesn't care and he thinks she's the only hope he has left.
So getting her to be with him sooo much deepper than just loving her in my opinion. also honestly, none of the times i read the books i got any impression of a love triangle. Bella just saw an easier life with him, but i don't remember her ever telling him that he had a chance and every time he adamant that she was in love with him too but didnt know it (all that gaslighting made me sooo mad btw) she always turned him down.
anyway im so glad someone is talking more in depth about this series! i just binged all the other videos, i cant wait for the next one hahaha
thank you so much for making them!!

Rosalie a character that I love exploring because her story is the the conversation about consent. The line “I wish someone voted no for me,” is so deep because it highlighted the fact that Carlisle actually took something away from her right after her fiancé did by turning her into a vampire with the hopes of giving Edward a mate. Carlisle is painting as a good vampire but his motivations and decision making rarely comes from the interest of the individual

    • @lilspookymama

you make such good points!!! I cant believe i never made the connection that carlisle also did something without consent to rosalie so soon after her "fiance" and his buddies all sexually assaulted her. I remember watching these as a teen and hating her because she was so bitchy to me and i just feel so sorry for her now. She truly got so many things ripped from her without her consent and it breaks me. Your comment really got me thinking!

    • @Schu0086
      @Schu0086 9 місяців тому +53

Carlisle is an interesting character because I feel his motivations are so unclear, they often seem very selfish in nature. I feel like the story would be more powerful if all of the Cullens had been turned independently and come together as a family by choice, rather than Carlisle turning these characters and then them feeling obligated to stay a part of the family. It’s like he feels the need to create “good” vampires even though this is such a traumatic experience for most of the characters who have been turned and I think Edward also would have rather died in his sickbed than be turned into a vampire, at least up until the point that Bella gives his unlife some meaning.

    • @SannaJankarin
      @SannaJankarin 9 місяців тому +27

That is an excelent point, but I think it would more of a metaphore of a parent because the idea of creating a child - in his case, a vampire - îs inherently selfish: passing your genes in order to prezerve your genome. In this instance, it was his selfish wish to create a family by forcing vampires created by him to become part of it. That is the circle of life, unfortunately.

I think it makes sense that Rosalie would be offended that Edward didn’t care for her looks. She came from a time period where a woman’s looks were an essential part of her being picked to be married. In part marriage was something she wanted, but it was also socially expected. And if she couldn’t attract a man, she would’ve been seen as a failure of a woman.

Let alone that in the books a whole reason she was turned was to be a MATE for Edward. So add her upbringing and then the whole factor of why she was turned, of course she was upset. She had to deal with being a vampire against her will and then the other person in a similar boat she was turned for tell her she wasn't good enough for him. Imagine living with someone like that

I think Meyer destroyed Jacob's character because she was trying to reach an originally planned end when her story had already changed directions. She first wrote the series as two books, giving the second one to her sister with no plans for it to ever see the light of day. (It wasn't YA friendly.) Then when Twilight was going to be published, she sat down to properly write an extended, YA friendly continuation.
The problem is Jacob hijacked the story. This probably sounds really weird if you've never written before, but characters and interactions kind of have a mind of their own. I had this happen to me in a book where I had a throwaway side character and the main character started flirting, and then he ended up being a major plot point. It just happens.
My guess is she wanted to use Jacob as the motorcycle plot device, and then they just had such chemistry. He's a sweet guy, and so he noticed the things like she didn't like music. And Bella was just comfortable and relaxed around him. It's why you can feel so strongly about Team Jacob in New Moon - he's the better option for her, because she's happier and a complete human when around him.
The problem though is Meyer didn't want her to be with him, she had the end planned and was going to make it go that way no matter what. The only way to do that is to completely change Jacob's character to make him a different person. She had to shoe horn in the ending she wanted, and that's why it feels so out of character, because it had to be manipulated to get to that end.

I feel like she didn't plan for him to be so tied to Bella but also didn't want him to be with anyone else. Because he had imprinted on Leah for example, he wouldn't be anywhere near Bella or the story. So she used the imprint baby thing, probably because he was so popular and fan reactions imo

I agree with you on Jacob's change, but not on how bad the sentence "better be dead than one of them" is.
See it from Jacob's point of view : Bella WILL be a bloodthirsty killer. She claims to be his best friend, but is willing to turn into his mortal enemy. At that point of the story, Jacob has had little to no connexion to vampires besides Edward, who left her and do seem like a monster incapable of feelings at that point.
Besides, it is impossible to know how much control she will have at first, when she turns. She will likely kill humans because she won't have any control... There's also the fact that becoming a vampire results in more werewolves "turning", see the pain that it causes for Jacob, for Sam and Leah.
Honestly, it's harsh, but I get his point of view. "Better be dead than turning into a cold bloodthirsty monster who will endanger me, my people and the people you claim to care about - ie Charlie".
The rest...Unforgivable, as you said. Besides, painting the Native American as the violent, hot headed, dangerous man against the quiet white dude (who is actually much more dangerous) is terrible.

Also, the presence of vampires make the young people in the tribe phase. Their lives get derailed by the presence of vampires, who are just another threat to their existence. No one in the book really cares about that. The tribe is just painted as beastly when it is in reaction to a real threat.
Jacob has been trying to save Bella from becoming the undead or being murdered by another vampire. Edward’s been controlling but not particularly good at protecting Bella. Jacob is actually more competent in that way-even Edward admits that in the book: “You stitched her back together.” Edward accepts Jacob’s help on multiple occasions in the movies too.
It’s got to be frustrating. Only in this context is some of Jacob’s possessive and aggressive behavior somewhat understandable, if not right. The kiss, in the book especially, was assault. Charlie should have probably taken him down to the police station and asked Bella if she wanted to press charges. In real life, girls should run from anyone who acts like this. A guy like this has maturing to do and is too volatile for a relationship.

(Sorry for the mistakes I will make since I'm not an native english speaker). I don't know if it was really because he has hid this part of him. The analyze in the video makes a lot of sense. But I also think that an important aspect of his change is the fact that he has been part of the pack for a longer time. As it is said a few times in the books, the pack's members think in unison so they are more effective. He's mind has, in a way, been sort of corrupt or brainwash from Sam and the others (and the elders that have teach Sam everything). I found that Jacob in this book/movie sounds a lot like the internal monolgue of Billy that we have discover in Midnight sun. Just my two cents on the subject. Not sure if it makes sense.

Also, SM glosses over the fact that the young people of the tribe only phase when vampires are present, and yet Dr. Cullen, who could afford to house his family in any cold rainy place in the world, CHOOSE to live right next to the ONE tribe who must transform in response to them. Yet he’s supposed to be SO principled and ethical. The Cullens know the tribe is threatened by their presence.
All this can be a metaphor for the generational trauma of colonization, except that I don’t think SM picked up on that. The gene mighy go dormant again if the Cullens and Bella moved away. Between this and having to imprint on Bella’s baby, Jacob gets a crappy story arc. His agency is repeatedly taken away. It’s like he is Bella’s perpetual body guard and servant.

I read that the tribe felt Lautner represented them well in his performance, but they did not appreciate the overt sexualization and trope of violence and aggression in the story. Also, the whole story is built on the presence of the Quileute tribe and their folklore-which is much more interesting than what we see or read-and yet the studio and SM “opted” not to let them sell merch OR compensate them, despite being asked. They need to relocate the community due to climate change too. It’s pretty awful.

Is Bella's not wanting to get married truly a personal value? I feel like it's more of a trauma response to the experience of our parents getting divorced more than anything. I believe the main reason why he was reluctant to be intimate with Bella is the fear that he would hurt her because he is a vampire not because he wanted to manipulate her into marriage. Also Edward is a very traditional character and the marriage is considered a lifetime commitment for vampires which is more sincere. It is also the same if she was to choose Jacob a lifetime commitment. I think both Edward and Jacob have more of an animalistic approach to finding a mate than human.

I love this question. I think just because Bella’s POV on marriage may be a response to the dissolution of her parents marriage doesn’t mean it isn’t a personal value. Ultimately, every person has a reason/experience linked to their stated values and/or morals. Think about how this relates to religion. The logic works the same.

    • @sunkistbabe
      @sunkistbabe 9 місяців тому +4

@@Bee-gf8gn Well I'm looking at from the point of view that behaviors or beliefs that come from dysfunction ( I know it sounds harsh but that is what divorce is) aren't really healthy and don't need to be preserved. Being scared of marriage is just keeping you from experiencing a full life. For instance, Edward could have walked away because of that and there's no guarantee that Bella could find another love as great again.

i feel like the reason bella behaves the way she does has a lot to do with the relationship she had with her mom. a lot of her traits resemble the adult child of a narcissist, or something similar (maybe renee had bpd traits?) the whole premise of her moving had to do with her mom. when she explains to edward why she moved she says it was on her own, so her mom could travel with phil. but a responsible mother would recognize putting the pressure to make that decision on a child not even 18 would be unfair. she’s also really hurt over the fact bella doesn’t share every detail of her life (her relationship with edward) when she shows up at the hospital after the accident. but these things show she sees her more as an “equal”, an extension of herself. the responsibility makes sense it’s not unreasonable for bella to take.
all of that would likely lead to bella feeling doubtful in most of her decisions despite actually having quite a bit more life experience than most people her age, and it would lead her to be attracted to relationships that were stronger willed.

I’m not sure if I agree with the assessment that Renee was a narcissist. It seemed like Renee really wanted Bella to live with her, as Forks was a place Renee had rejected and felt her daughter would feel similarly. But Renee didn’t manipulate her into staying and let her make her own decision.
I think the more accurate reality is that Renee is flighty, which Bella recognizes as a character flaw in her mom. She left her marriage and small town life in Forks and then moved on with Phil, who allows her to travel and experience new things. Charlie reflects stability. Jacob also is somewhat stable. Maybe the reason Bella didn’t choose Jacob is because he’s more similar to the life Renee rejected and subconsciously wants to experience that same freedom her mother eventually did with Phil.

We (daughter and I) found the series just this past month and it was new for us. Kind of fascinated in a morbid way. The books especially did not age well. I really appreciate the way you talk about the characters as if they were your clients and you essentially call them in to understand what drives their unhelpful and harmful behaviors. You are using empathy but asking for accountability. Great for people to see.
I’m also happy that my teen daughter says she is “Team Sweet Jacob Only.”
She’s sympathetic to wolf Jacob as he is under a lot of otherworldly stress + wolf hormones BUT she would only be interested in the sweet kid who rebuilt the truck as a gift just for his childhood friend(although Bella barely noticed that) or the kid in New Moon who is steadfast and patient and sunny (and who gets to wear clothes) who patiently helped Bella through her depression. My teen says she is really “Team Bella needs a stronger sense of self and to tell these guys to get lost” once the competition for control starts. Who gets married at 18, she says. (She also ships Edward and Jacob. ;) )

      One more thing:
The main problem with the books is that SM wants them to also be bodice rippers for teens, so the messaging around consent is conflicting. The main problem with the movies is that they really sexually objectified a teenage boy through body modification, and while he was beautiful, he was before the extra 35 pounds, and we started to feel downright bad for him in Eclipse. “Doesn’t he own a shirt.”
Teenage boys still try to emulate that unsustainable body and I think it’s toxic b/c even the actor has talked about body image and dysmorphia and weird encounters with women old enough to be his mom.

I love that you're talking about these. Everyone is honestly terrible in this book/film. Stephenie has continued to say she's a Jacob shipper, which astonishes me. The one thing I appreciate in the book is that when Edward comes back from hunting, he says he trusts Bella, and she's welcome to be with the wolves as much as she wants. If she says they're safe, he believes her. The animosity is so much less coming from Edward (at least for a long while). It was refreshing. Of course, the movie did away with that.

Edward knew Jake had feelings for Bella. Plus, Jacob made it very clear he had feelings for her. At some point she being older should have put distance between herself and Jacob. I found myself annoyed at times that Edward was tolerating Bella's behavior. Not to blame the victim. Jacob definitely assaulted Bella, but Edward warned her to leave Jacob alone. Bella should have spent more time with Angela & Leah. They were the only characters who told Bella the cold truth. Charlie pushed Jacob on Bella to slow down Edward's relationship with her. Smh.

Edward, and Alice, constantly violates bella's consent and autonomy so him warning about Jacob or whatever just comes off as hypocritical especially since Edward has also kissed her without consent but he isn't demonized for it by bella or by Stefanie Meyer cuz he's white. The lack of awareness about how deeply r@cist it is that Jacob and wolves are all written to have uncontrollable rage even tho it directly contradicts their purpose, which is to protect human, while the exclusively white vampires, who show little to no regard for human life unless they deem that human important, are painted as the saviors is bizarre

And btw, even after the kiss, he still left, but this time with the promise of trying to stay alive, so the kiss was definitely an instrument to make him fight for his life and not keep him there.
The fact that he said he won't kiss her without her asking for it earlier makes this even worse for me actually! Like, she made it clear, that she isn't interested in kissing him and he still ended up putting her in a position (accidentally or planned) where she felt that kissing him was the only way to ensure him staying alive - that's forced consent to me which means it's no consent.
Honestly, I don't believe that he actually intended to manipulate her into kissing him, he was just too hurt in the moment to think straight, but that doesn't make the entire situation less disgusting
If it was a situation where he wasn't threatening to essentially unalive himself and had Bella not tried other reasons to make him either stay (so he won't unalive himself) or at least fight properly, then I would fully agree with you, bc it would truly have been just a "kiss before the war" moment, but it clearly wasn't

The easiest way to see this is this - would she have kissed him if he didn't threaten to harm himself? No, she wouldn't, since the kiss was not initiated by any deep desire that she had to do so (doesn't mean that there wasn't any desire there, just that it wasn't the reason that she kissed him), but as a desperate attempt to get Jake to not throw his life away. I think Jacob changing so much between New Moon and Eclipse is supposed to be partially the supernatural effect. Imo, Stephanie Meyer wrote it with the intention that turning into a wolf/coming of age for Jacob involved him becoming more "dominant" and "animal like" and the hatred of vampires being instinctual. Because of being in Bella's POV / arguably not great world building viewers often try to treat the vampires and wolves as a little too human. But the story is a lot more interesting and things make more sense if you genuinely view them all as predators and Bella as prey.

I always thought that Edward thought that Bella had been convinced that marriage wasn’t so bad by seeing Renee remarry happily and seeing the Cullen couples who were also married. I think he felt pretty awful when he realized that Bella was going along to get along, and that he may have inadvertently forced her into marriage when that wasn’t necessary. As always, great video and great discussion!

I missed that part. My cousin said..."Jacob was nice until he didn't get his way"...or the girl...which I agree with. I didn't feel he was as nice of a guy as Team Jacob made him out to be. At least Edward, never tried to overpower Bella. That's a red flag. Edward & Alice was right to warn Bella against Jacob.

@@kaisofine yea it was only clear in the books though. Right before the fight he says “there’s a pretty dangerous fight brewing down there, it wouldn’t be too hard to take myself out of the equation” he goes on saying that if Bella doesn’t want him to kill himself than Bella needs to do something to prove she wants him alive, which ended up being for her to ask him to kiss her. Then after the fight when he’s in bed injured Bella says “at least Edward didn’t say he’d kill himself just to kiss me” but she wasn’t mad at him… and for the life of me I don’t understand why

That wasn’t consent. Consent needs to be freely given, not coerced. If a man holds a gun to your head and tells you you’re going to have sex with him, and you do, you didn’t give consent just because you weren’t physically held down. You were coerced, and that’s still rape. Bella didn’t consent to either kiss.

28:00ish: re: the discussion of the marriage ultimatum vs. having sex. I think it's okay for Edward to say "I want to be married before we have sex" and it's okay for Bella to say "I don't believe in marriage so I don't want to do it." In a healthy couple, that would be a discussion, and possibly a (hopefully amicable) breakup because they realize they want incompatible things.
To play that forward a couple moves, they both might realize they can't stand being apart so they come back and renegotiate, and maybe we end up in the same place with them married, etc., but without the emotional blackmail of the original story.
TL/DR: I do enjoy Twilight as brain candy but I do wish it modeled healthier relationship dynamics.

    • @NoelleTakestheSky
      @NoelleTakestheSky 9 місяців тому +3

I don’t see Edward coercing Bella either, even regarding turning her. Bella had no right to push him when there were others who were willing. She pushed and wanted him to do what he didn’t want to do, and so he placed a condition on it. If she wasn’t pushing him, then his actions would be assholish. But she’d not innocent in this. She’s so conceited and entitled that she saw no problem with barging into their home after not seeing them for so long, and, rather than being so happy they’re back and focusing on that for a while, forced them to vote then and there on giving her what she wanted.
I never enjoyed Twiight because I was concerned VERY early on that there were going to be girls who had these relationships reinforced as the ideal. Fantasy becomes reality when people are told in real life that this thing is good. Even in this comments section, there are people who’ve mentioned molding relationships after Twilight and not seeing the toxicity.

Idk how true this is but I always heard that Stephanie Meyer wrote twilight to be a standalone, and then she wrote the wedding from breaking dawn as a follow up. But when she got an agent, they wanted her to make it a series. So Jacob wasn't even a character at first, and she definitely didn't ever really think of him as a serious love interest imo

  • @kaisofine

Edward had a right to lay out his standards in the relationship...no sex before marriage...marriage in order to turn her into a vampire. Bella didn't have to except the offer. Like he said "compromise".

    Great video !
I used to read Twilight as a kid, but not as a plot, but rather some other issues. I have a warm feeling towards the book, since if it didn't exist, I probably won't be here today. I don't remember the plot much, just how I turned the pages for basic soothing, but was never a fan, and just read it because my mom used to read it and I wanted to check it out of curiosity. The thirst for violence was something young me found relatable in Edward, and still do to some degree, and I understand how all encompassing it is, and agree with Edward on the no sex before marriage thing. To me, it just seems like a relationship that is emotionally distressing for both. And wanting to hurt someone even if it's against your values is very emotionally distressing. It's a choice to act upon it, but I see it more as succombing to temptation, and that thirst for violence can be all incompassing. Verbalizing it is important to some degree, especially if you don't know how long you'll be able to control yourself. Being tempted impulsively so to do something against one's values is very distressing. Together with his attraction for Bella. I don't think Edward would be happy in this relationship.
Personally, I am more of a Harry Potter girl. It got some great stuff to analyze, maybe the Dursleys are an interesting pick for a relationship therapist.

Me too. I was never interested in the romance aspect of the series. What drew me in was how Bella felt like she didn't belong anywhere. Which I can still kinda relate to this day but I'm comfortable with being able to socialize with people now and not expecting deep friendships.
Obviously I stayed for the vampires.

Hi! I love your videos so much. My daughter just read the Twilight series and enjoyed them. Now I want to show her your videos so she understands that the books are just fiction and not a template of what healthy relationships should look like. Sometimes, we don't realize how much books and movies influence how we view relationships and develop unrealistic expectations based off of what we see. LOVE that you’re diving into this series and have been waiting for this video! I only read & watched Twilight growing up because my sister was completely obsessed. I just wanted to see what the fuss was about. I deeply disliked Bella for most of the series but enjoyed the way she found herself as a vampire in Breaking Dawn pt 2. I actually think that’s the best movie in the series as well.
LOVED the way you spoke about Bella parenting her parents in the first book/video. I think there is more to explore there. How Bella is so needy/dependent on Edward modeling how her mother manages her relationship. We see this same dynamic (of course) with Ana in 50 Shades of Grey. The ways absent mothers leave their daughters vulnerable to manipulative/controlling partners. Thoughts?
In a future video, would love to hear your POV on the Michelle Carter/Conrad Roy III case. I just watched the documentary and the Hulu series “The Girl from Plainville” based on this and I think there are similar themes to explore re: depression, teenage relationships, parental absence, etc. I know this is a real case with real people as opposed to the fantasy of Twilight but with our obsession with true crime, these stories are hard to ignore. Another one is the story of Betty Gore and Candy Montgomery as seen in the Hulu series “Candy” and/or the HBO Max series “Love & Death”
