I'm sure there's some stuff I've forgotten but I remember a lot. I think remembering is important. Understanding, Remembering, and Forgiveness--I feel like this is the way to dismantle generational trauma and minimize bullying eventually.

Trelawney wasn't a mistake. Dumbledore hired her because she had made the prophecy about Harry and Voldemort. Dumbledore wanted her at Hogwarts where he could keep her safe.
All of the things she said did actually come true as well, even when she wasn't in her haze state. Her predictions weren't always very straightforward though.
I think she also had a hard time believing herself....so when others made fun of her she made a fool of herself too. Book readers know.
Even the DADA teachers. Dumbledore doesn’t have a choice. He has to change the profs every year for a very long time. So much so that there was a rumour that the position was cursed.
Oh and Snape was a double agent
Also Lupin was the only candidate that year and was in the Order, Umbrage was forced upon him, so Lockhart was just a respected idiot who seemed like he could do little harm and teach Harry to be less of a narcissist and stay humble.
So to answer the hiring question:
He hired Trelawney to protect her because she IS a seer and made the prediction that the entire series is about
He hired Lockhart to teach Harry what could happen to him if he let his fame get to him
And he hired Lupin to show Harry how cruel people could be to outcasts.
He is outright using Snape, who was a former death eater
He allowed Umbridge to take over the school to show how corrupt the ministry is
There’s a reason for all of them. Every character that had emphasis put on them served a purpose in the books.
But yeah, Dumbledore risked everyone’s education to teach Harry a few lessons🤭
I think Lupin was an excellent teacher though.
@MalloryNewcomb Lockhart wasn't, but at least his books _were_ written using knowledge stolen from people who _did_ know what they were doing.
Moody he hired in hopes to prepare Harry for the upcoming war but that was a thwarted by Crouch Jr.
Dumbledore knew the prediction AND history of previous war, so I assume that he blived that young wizards should build the character otherwise all magic in their hands will be useless or even harmful.
He hired Lockhart to teach Harry what could happen to him if he let his fame get to him - theory, the Lockhart fans had been begging for Dumbledore to hire Lockhart for many years, and then Harry starting Hogwarts was Dumbles ways to create a scenario to out Lockhart. I feel like the video games of Harry Potter had information on how they knew each other before the series.
Background on Lockhart, he was the only Wizard kid out of him and his two sisters, so he was treated as the favorite child, and he thought he was the best. Then, when he got to Hogwarts, he thought he was inherently good at everything, and then, when he wasn't, he gave up trying. That's why he sucks at everything but memory charms. If he can't be the best right off the bat, he doesn't even try, but he still thinks he's the best of everything.
He doesn't suck at everything, he's a competent researcher and writer. the contents of his books are accurate info written in an enttaining way

I could write a book about what it does to child's psyche to have an authority figure you can't escape (a teacher) be completely unqualified to take care of you or do their job (teaching). Like, "this is who you're stuck with this year, kids. No, you're not going to learn anything or be treated with any amount of respect. Have fun :)"

The movies aren't perfect, but I love that Snape gave Lockhart like 50 years of warning before he cast that spell and he still blew it.
Lockhart is the one who counted down himself and he somehow still managed to fuck it up

Books ain't perfect either. But that bit with Snape and Lockhart is great in the movies.
The reason Dumbledore doesn't take much thought to the teachers of defence against the dark arts is because Voldemort cursed the position to bring harm upon the teacher. However for the other ones you mentioned Trelawney, she is actually really good at Divination, however she is just terrible at knowing what she has seen. She makes a number of very great predictions throughout the series. As for Snape, he is a loyal ally and partner of Dumbledore who despite being abusive, has good intentions.
Also Snape is the only one with occlumency powerful enough to infiltrate Voldemorts inner circle. Dumbledore is a great teacher, and a great teacher has got to see the potential for good in the weakest student. Snape had demonstrated that potential at great personal cost after losing lily.
From my understanding, Trelawney was hired for her own protection. Snape was hired because he’s an excellent potions master (even though he’s an awful teacher)
If you consider how long since Riddle jinxed the post, and the reputation of the jinx, people aren’t exactly lining up to teach a class that may well see them in a bad way by the end of the year. Dumbledore would be desperate at this point.

Fun fact: before the movies Ron was the fan favorite and he was a lot smarter, the director of the movies loved Hermione’s character so much he pushed her into the fan fave roll and changed lines to favor her more than Ron.

Which is a shame, because it causes movie Hermione to border on being overpowered and definitely tips movie Ron over the line into Idiot Buffoon territory, especially as the movies advance.
Tbh I never loved Ron, the fact that he didn’t stay loyal to Harry through things like the Trimagic tournament. I can’t stand stuff like that. Otherwise he’s alright.

Just so you know, Dumbledore hired Lockhart because he was the only one available for the job. He hired Trelawney because she made the prediction about Harry and Voldemort, so he couldn’t afford having her work somewhere else. He hired Snape because he loved Harry’s mom, but accidentally doomed her, so he asked Dumbledore for his help in protecting her, in return for his service. Also he was a double agent for Dumbledore

I thought they meant "why give the role of Defense to Snape" in which case its coz Dumbledore needed Slughorn to take the Potions job and to keep Snape around he gave him the job of Defense knowing (I assume) that it wouldn't be his problem to replace him once the year was done and the curse kicked in. (among other reasons) xD
@@missyc7852 well Slughornbwas already a potions teacher and snake had always been capable of teaching defense against the dark arts. So they put Slughorn back i to his old post.

Rupert starred in a film called "Driving Lessons", and his delivery of the line "Fuck off, Sarah" remains one of the best things I've ever seen.
Very quickly I noticed he was so very easily talented, since the first film.
Yes, so true! Ron’s character was so spunky in the earlier movies...he becomes more and more insecure and cringy as the movies progress, which was a sad fate for the character (someone else mentioned something related to this in an earlier comment).
Also, the whole "nothing is ever my fault" thing he does is classic narcissism. Like when he tries and fails to heal Harry, it's not because he's a failure as a wizard, but because "oh, the spell sometimes does that".
Snape is an abusive asshole but GOD do I love him in the duel scene. He's just not having any of Lockhart's BS and it's great!

Snape is also a savant at potions and really rather a talented Wizard generally so certainly not a bad hire.
How many Universities get professors to teach who are incredibly well respected in their field or have renown with the general public but are not actually that good at teaching.

Sometimes I can't decide if Snape is a toxic example of romanticizing an obsessive stalker or a great example of character complexity.
Here's an idea for a future HP video. How about talking about how sorting kids into these groups based on basic personality traits would effect their development?

@@some-ahole I'm not sure of the actual psychological term, I've just called it putting on a mask since realizing it was a thing. And *gods* does it mess with your mental health, even worse because you feel like you're doing it to yourself rather than being pressured to by others.

Dumbledore does have reasons for the people he hires:
- We all know why he hired our favourite teacher Lupin :)
- He hired Gilderoy Lockhart because he couldn't find anyone else for the job that year (the Defense job is cursed, that's confirmed in book 6)
- He hired Snape because Snape was now in his pocket after Voldemort killed Lily and he was a tool that Dumbledore needed, and he had to set Snape up as a useful double agent when the Dark Lord eventually came back.
- He hired Trelawney, because she made the Prophecy about Harry (but doesn't remember it) and would be in grave danger outside of Hogwarts.
- He didn't have a choice in hiring Umbridge.
Surely there were better people than Lockhart, a fraud who had no idea what he was doing, asked people how they'd done various great things then erased their memories and took credit for those things himself and used them to become famous by writing books about those things as if he'd done them.
@@ShadowSailor Yes, Tom Riddle wanted to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor but Dumbledore denied him (I think this is in book 6), so Dumbledore speculated that Tom Riddle cursed the position.

@@Xehanort10 It's literally said, that no one wants this job, because the teachers in DA only stay one year and usually meet a miserable end. It's the only reason Harry is sort of seeing a good thing about Snape becoming DA teacher in book 6. Because after that year, he will be gone.
The best theory I’ve heard about why Lockhart was hired was because Dumbledore wanted to ensure that Harry would not become too proud himself. He wanted to help Harry shape himself to be the opposite of Voldemort- another narcissist. Arrogance can make u fall hard. Dumbledore was trying to keep Harry from going down that path and the best way was showing not telling.

Here’s why Dumbledore hired Trelawney, Snape, and Lockhart: Trelawney was to protect her as she gave the big prophecy that was the big catalyst for the plot. Snape became a double agent, so he was hired partially for protection, but also as a sort of spy. With Lockhart, he was really the only one who applied and it gave Harry a look as to what could happen if he let his fame go to his head....

That's right. They had terrible Defense (DADA) teachers (except Lupin) because almost no one applied. The DADA position was cursed by Voldemort since Dumbledore refused to hire him years ago which is why no teacher lasted more than one year (book 6). It doesn't help with finding candidates.

That doesn’t mean the hiring choices as teachers were still good. And Voldemort did nothing to Trelawney after he took over in seventh book. And Binns and Hagrid are also horrible teachers, we might like Hagrid but he was over his head. Mugglecast podcast has an episode about this if anyone is interested. Binns is my least favorite of the hiring choices since there is no reason for it and he doesn’t teach past 19th century so the students never hear the background of the previous war with Voldemort (or Grindelwald) that could arm them against the propaganda in the seventh book. That would be like Germany not teaching about Nazi’s or US about race relations...of wait...
A minor correction on Trelawney: she was hired because she could prophecize and she was the catalyst, but not for protection. It's just that anyone can learn how to read tea leaves, but 99.9% of fortune tellers are hacks and frauds that can't actually see the future so her incredibly rare moments where she actually makes prophecies still puts her above the competition.
Some of Dumbledore's hiring choices start to make a lot more sense once you realise that they have nothing to do with the person's ability to do the job and everything to do with him wanting to keep tabs on them.
Or be a lesson for Harry
To be fair, in the fourth book he thought he hired one of the best Aurors to ever live and ended up with a Death Eater.
@@gurglequeen433 to be fair he didn't expect him to be a death eater, he already hired Moody (or was at least thinking of hiring him) before Moody got kidnapped and an imposter was put in his place, so you can't really blame Dumbledore for that.
@@lucyla9947 I don't. That was my point. Dumbledore hired a well known Aurora who he trusted. Voldemort knew Moody would be working at Hogwarts so he had Crouch Jr take his place to put his plan into action.
Yeah, but subjecting an entire school of children to people you want to "keep an eye on" is super self-centred and dangerous.
About hiring Lockhart. The book explains why he hired him, and the answer is pretty simple, he was looking for a good teacher, but no one wanted the job except Lockhart, so he had no choice, he was the only one who applied for the job.
And for years to come, it's still a problem and Dumbledore has always had trouble finding someone for the job because it's believed to be cursed ever since Riddle applied for that particular position and failed. From then on, every defence against dark arts teacher only stays for one year and sometimes ends up really bad at the end of the year.
I'm not sure if this was ever mentioned in the movies, but I don't think so. The book actually explains it quite well and many times. In the fifth book, the golden trio even joke about getting rid of Umbridge since she'll be gone at the end of the year due to the curse.
It was mentioned many times and it always worked until Voldemort's death.

Right down to Snape, who lasts for years and years as Potions master but has to leave because of plot after one year of DADA professor.
Dumbledore isn't inherently bad at hiring teachers, he just only considers what teachers would be good for Harry specifically. I'm pretty sure the reason he hires Lockhart is to prevent Harry from becoming that type of person. Dumbledore spends most of the books trying to make sure Harry doesn't turn into what he himself was as a kid.

I think that still makes him an inherently bad headmaster though. He's hiring people based on what would benefit a single student rather than what would benefit as many students as possible.

I dont think it had anything to do with Harry. Dumbledore said Lockhart was literally the only person brave enough (or stupid enough) to apply for the position, everyone just assumed that position was cursed, and it probably was cursed by Tom Riddle when Dumbledore refused to hire him. He was doing the best he could with whoever accepted the obvious danger that came with that job enough to even apply. Quirell got possesed by Voldemort and died, Lockhart was too stupid to realize the danger and ended up with his memory wiped and his brain addled, Remus did it because hes already a werewolf and probably didnt have any other prospects and he was outed for taking the position, Madeye was gonna do it as favor to Dumbledore and to protect Harry(also hes seen some shit so a curse wasnt gonna scare him lol) but he got kidnapped and kept prisoner in a chest for a whole year for it, Snape was picked because he was the only one who wanted it and Dumbledore needed Slughorn to be Potions master to keep him close and safe to get his memories for finding the horcruxes. Dumbledore isnt perfect by any means but he did the best he could with what he had lol
I love how in the dueling scene between Snape and Lockhart, Snape said the spell expelliamus out loud and very slowly, even giving Lockhart a chance, yet he couldn’t even block Snape’s very easy spell. He is so incompetent 😂
The spell in inconsistent in the movie though. Its supposed to just take your wand away.
@@EstherHulst-Artist see, ironically it makes Expelliarmus the only accurate bit of witchcraft in HP. Because it’s power fluctuates based on how much intention was put behind it. Such as Harry, whilst ridiculously angry, managed to knock Snape into the old bed so hard it knocked him unconscious. Or Snape in the duelling scene mentioned, he intended to humiliate Lockhart, not disarm him. So Lockhart was flung in a rathe spectacular.
@@dancingcarapace. The spell knocked Snape on the bed because Hermoine Ron and Harry hit him at the same time, in the books. Spells usually have one function.
I read somewhere that he said expelliarmus out loud but was actually using non-verbal magic and he “thought” another spell, which would make sense
@@EstherHulst-ArtistYes, exactly. The spell in the movie was supposed to be the knock back jinx. A lot of the dueling spells were inaccurate to the book canon, except for the snake summon spell Draco casts, and the banishing spell Severus does to get rid of the snake afterwards.

I especially love his expressions in this film. They are amazing! The spider scenes and going down to the Chamber are just perfect.
Hermione isn’t the “true hero” of the series, but she is written that way for the movies. I watched their interview together where the writer said she was their favourite and Jo said how she’d always hear people say Ron was their favourite so she was excited to work with someone who loved Hermione the most too.
It’s very obvious the movies are written by someone who loves Hermione, because Rons is mostly used for comedic relief and poor Ginny is completely shelved.
There's also the fact that Hermione is given lines in the movie that were never said by her. Many of them were actually said by Ron. I hated the scene where she started crying and explaining what a mudblood was because in the book she had no idea because she grew up as a muggle and this wasn't something that would have been printed in books, Ron was the one who explained and Hermione didn't care.

Not necessarily. He might not be able to write with magic. In the books it was mentioned that there are people who can do only some specific, small portion of magic. It seems that Lockhart's specialty is memory spells and he can't really do anything else.

The best thing that Lockheart never gets credit for -- he may be a totally incompetent charlatan, but starting the Dueling Club was probably the single most important factor in most of those students not dying in the final arcs. He saved a lot of lives with that move.

@@crystalmorgan8039 Yeah, but it was kind of a proto-Dumbledore's Army - at least in the sense that Lockhart didn't want to remove the student's ability to defend themselves, and in fact did think it was a good idea that they learn how to do so, unlike someone else we know... That's the only decision of his I can possibly get behind, anyway

The position of DADA was cursed by Voldemort. Quirrel was actually a professor for a number of years before taking that post. It was on his vacation before starting that post when he met Voldemort. Lockhart was to show Harry the dangers of letting fame go to his head. Snape is because he needs to keep him close as a double agent against Voldemort. Trelwany is bc she was the one who made the prophesy about Harry and Voldemort. If she leaves the grounds she would be in danger of being captured and murdered by Voldemort
And Umbridge was hired to show Harry the corruption in the Ministry of Magic

fun fact: Ron's wands, including this first one, each had a core of unicorn hair, and unicorn hair wands are known to be faithful to the person who rightfully wields them, so when the wand was snatched from Ron's hands by Gilderoy and used to perform the memory-wipe charm, it not only backfired because it was malfunctioning, it basically said, "Oh, you want to hurt _my_ wizard's friend? *TAKE THAT BACK!!* "

Each one is like its own living creature, with personality and identity, and that develope their own individual bond with their weilder each time!
Not to mention how the different materials, ingredients and shapes all contribute to make the wand the way it is, with its weaknesses and strengths.

Well, to be fair about Hermione, her character in the movie is absolutely NOT the same as in the book. The screenwriters and director just had a weird fixation on the character and took good character bits from other characters and placed them into her
Which is unfortunate. It’s why Ron Weasley gets as much gripe as he gets. People mistaken his movie counterpart for how he is, rather than the overly exaggerated, flanderized movie version we got. I agree with Daniel Radcliffe that Rupert is by far the better natural actor, particularly in films 1 and 2. I wish he'd had more to work with, as it is, some of his reactions and moods in the films make little sense or are very jarring or unexplained.

She has zero friends at first because she was so insufferable. When Ron and Lavender walked by her holding hands, she created a bird out of thin air to peck him. Over time she matures, but she still has her bitchy moments. Also, I don't know where this Mary Sue label came from. A Mary Sue is naturally good at every thing without having to work for it or train. Hermione read voraciously, studied, took extra classes, did all of her homework, and kept her head buried in books. Perhaps I'm taking this a little personally, but I got so tired of kids resenting me because "everything came to me easily" when in actuality, I worked my ass off for my grades. When they were goofing off, I was taking notes, reading, and creating my own practice tests. It's not Hermione's fault that for whatever reasons the screenwriters nerfed him and we don't have to take it out on her.

For example: In the fist book when they go through the trapdoor they land at the room with the devil's snare. Hermione knows she has to light a fire, but she loses her nerves under the pressure and doesn't know how to cast a fire. Ron reminds her she is a witch, so she casts on with her wand.
Her flaw is she loses her nerves under pressure, at least in the book. In the movie Ron is written as comic relief in that situation, while Hermione remembers how to beat the devils snare and how to cast the spell immediatly.
Also. Yes, she has zero friends at first, and that is obviously shown, but that is also:
1. a crucial plot point in the book/movie and
2. in the first movie, where the differences to the book are fairly small
Some more small examples.
In the 2nd movie we only see very little of her fancying Lockhart, while that is a huge part in the book.
In the 2nd movie, she explains what a mudblood is, while Ron is comic relief. In the book Ron explains it.
In the 3rd movie, she is the one that stands up to Sirius and says: "If you want to kill Harry, you have to kill us first (I'm paraphrasing). In the book, that is Ron. In the movie, Ron is pretty much useless in the Shrieking Shack (and of course: comic relief)
In the 5th and the 7th (part 1 and 2) movie, she is far less annoying than in the book, when she wants Harry to practice/ do Occlumency
In the 6th movie she is far less annoying about the book of the HBP. In the book, she was almost obsessed with it because she was annoyed that Harry was better than her in potions
There are more, but I think that is enough...
Also, I don't think she is a Mary Sue in the movies because she clearly works very hard, but as a movie watcher you don't get to see that very often. Not as often as in the books at least. In the books we are constantly reminded how often she is the library and how well she does her homework. Not in the movies though.
And I know, they couldn't really show that in the movies because of time issues. I just wanted to explain why she seems more like a Mary Sue in the movies than in the books
A "Mary Sue" isn't a perfect or flawless character. A "Mary Sue" is in essence a black hole of a character, the thing around which the entire story rotates. They warp the story around them so that everything else only serves to make them look good/bad/miserable/etc. You cannot have a Mary Sue in a story with other important and interesting characters. If the "Sue" is not the point around which the story gets warped, then at worst the character is poorly written. The movie versions of both Hermione and Ron weren't written as well as they deserved, but that doesn't make Hermione a Mary Sue. It makes her poorly written.
A "Mary Sue" was originally a term for author avatars in fanfiction stories. Said avatars were and still are often flawless of the author around which the story revolved. However, since most early fanfiction authors were girls and women, their avatars were also girls and women. As such, "Mary Sue" has become a term that gets thrown around as way of attacking female main characters perceived as "flawless" or "perfect".
Using the term "Mary Sue", even when raising valid criticisms, draws attention away from the criticism and can raise concerns that the critic is biased or sexist. Everyone's criticisms of film!Hermione are valid, but are getting lost in the debate about her alleged "Mary Sue-ness". She is not because she does not warp the story around her.
You can have what looks like an archetypal-Mary Sue without the character being a Mary Sue. Son Goku from Dragon Ball Z is an excellent example. He portrayed as perfect powerful lovable goof, but he's not a Mary Sue because of the cast of characters around him.
In summary, if a story is not getting warped around a character, said character is not a Mary Sue. At worst they are just poorly written.

First ever saw Kenneth Branagh in Harry Potter as a child. Thought he was just a goofy, comedic actor. Now for the first time, been watching his Hamlet with my parents and trying not to laugh at the worst moments when a Lockhart flashback pops into my brain while Hamlet is talking about death. Hardest thing I've had to do in my life.
I saw him in Hamlet first and when he delivered the line about reading just words ( I don't remember the exact line off the top of my head.) I crack up everytime. His tone of voice and expression is hilarious to me. I love him as Lockhart.

My father is a narcissist.
I wasn't born what he wanted me to be, so I was never the favourite child.
I grew up with a lot of self worth issues. He's never cared for me yet now that I'm the only person with a degree in my family, at age 21 and show a lot of promise for my future, he's suddenly interested in being in my life and get profit from what I'm going to do in the future.
I spent all my life seeking attention and approval from him and realised only in recent years that it's not worth the pain.
So if you find yourself in a situation similar as mine remember that you're worth more what your parents think of you, you don't have to prove anything to anyone but yourself.
Find people who love you for who you are, not for your worth ❤

Being in any sort of relationship (parent child, coworker, spouse, etc) with a narcissist is difficult at best. I think being the child of a narc is probably the hardest: the narc parent is it a position to manipulate and form the child (who has no way to escape for the first 15-20 years of the relationship) resulting in last and consequences for the child, no obvious consequences for the parent. Until the child grows up, hopefully gets help to heal at least some of the damage, and sees the parent for what s/he is- self-serving, self-aggrandizing, and always at the expense of anyone and everyone else.
Oof. This is relatable. My mom and I have only recently started talking about how her mom/my grandma was a narcissist and how that affected our family. I was always closer to my grandma than anyone else growing up, and I can't help but wonder if that connection was at least in part because of my grandma's narcissistic need to lord over my mother.
It's hard growing up and realizing your family members are failed humans like the rest of the world. I'm glad you've been able to recognize what is unhealthy for you, and set boundaries that respect your personhood.

This is true. I feel like Daniel came into his own in the fifth film and Emma did in the sixth, so it was good that all three knocked it out of the park by the time we got to the finale. But Rupert was crushing it early on. He is absolutely hilarious in Goblet of Fire when he couldn't care less about being at the dance.

A note about Dumbledores hiring practices: He hired Trelawney because she made an actual prophecy and he valued that ability. He hired Snape to keep him close, and because he was actually extremely skillful at potions. All the troubles with DATDA teacher problems we're due to him not being able to find anyone talented enough whom would actually take the position. Just like in real life, I'm sure being a teacher at Hogwarts doesn't pay particularly well, especially considering they're at the school for 10 months of the year.
The reason no one worth a damn wanted to teach DADA at Hogwarts isn't the pay, it's because the position was literally cursed by voldemort. I mean he actually placed a jinx on it and rumor quickly spread about it.
And really, if you're skilled enough to pick where to work, you likely won't pick the job that will actually, literally kill you.
Yea I kind of felt like he almost always had a reason for hiring someone and lockheart was sort of the exception to that rule… every other year felt on purpose and lockheart was the one year where Dumbledore was like oh this dude is an idiot but he’s relatively harmless (these kids have faced worse) and I’ve got too much other shit to worry about lol

Without being famous, rich and constantly talked about and fawned over Lockhart's nothing. And in the post credits scene of the Chamber of Secrets film there's a book called Who Am I by Lockhart on sale in Flourish and Blotts.
This is also confirmed in the books too. When Harry and co. are at Saint Mungos in Book Five, a nurse confirms he's had no visitors since he's been with them. He has fans that he signs autographs for because that's all he had. He also still shows signs of his previous arrogance with this line.
"Teach? Me? Did I? Taught you everything you know, I expect, did I? Well, how about those autographs, then? Shall we say a round dozen, you can give them to all your little friends then and nobody will be left out!"

Trelawney is actually a great seer. "When thirteen dine together, the first to rise will be the first to die" - RIP Dumbledore. "I think I am right in saying, my dear, that you were born in midwinter?" - Harry wasn't but Voldy was. "‘My dear, you have the Grim." - that was Sirius' dog form. "Tonight, before midnight...the servant will break free" - Pettigrew escaped. And so on...
But that is not why she was hired. She was hired to protect her after she gave the prophecy about Harry.

We already had 13 people at the table (Pettigrew as Scabbers still counts) and Dumbledore left his chair to greet and invite Trelawney. I love Trelawney! The way Hermilne treated her was part of the reason I was stopped liking Hermione and much. Like you live in a world of magic and time traveling but you cant believe in predictions? Like just because she isn't good at it it's "fake". Really disliked Hermione after that. Plus how she treated Luna even though Luna was right about the skeletal horses but hermione didnt believe it.

I was friends with narcissists, and I haven't realized it until we worked on a project together. I gave constructive criticism after the project on what we could improve the next time. It ended with them crying and shouting at me. They told lies about me, how I went behind their backs, and that I was an awful friend. I only talked about the project during our shared reflection round. I didn't even say something personal to any of them. I was so confused about their reaction. I never had any drama in my friendships until this point.
Later, when another project was coming up, they reached out to me by saying, "Let's just forget about it!" I insisted on a conversation about the issue first. They denied my wish because they didn't want to talk about it. They said I did something wrong and, after all, I should be thankful that they are willing to give me a second chance. These people even wanted to play off my boyfriend against me. "You know us longer than you know her....you should be neutral...you only agree with her because she's your girlfriend..." I decided to end our contact ultimately. All my other friends did as well; they stood by me and, luckily, had my back which made our friendship even stronger.
My takeaways from this experience are:
1) If someone does not take your feelings or opinions seriously, you have the right to end the relationship because this is not a true friendship.
2) True friends are willing to discuss underlying issues with you, even if it can be unpleasant. They know that arguments are OK, safe, and needed in a friendship, and they trust you enough to know that you will still be friends after the fight.
3) True friends do not only think about their personal benefits.
4) True friends are loyal to you as long as you are truthful and decent to them.
Disagree with the third one. If my friends benefit, I benefit, usually. I may not care about them out of empathy, since I have none, but their feelings affect their actions, which affect me, and affect the friendship. Besides, most people only care about others because they share the feelings of those around them via empathy, so they get hurt if their friends get hurt, and they feel good when their friends do, so ultimately, while they may not be consciously aware of it, they are only kind because of selfish reasons (being good feels good, and being bad feels bad. Doing things that feel good is selfish. Avoiding things that feel bad is selfish). Perhaps that isn't selfish because they don't believe it benefits them, but functionally it is. And it isn't any less real for my friends, even when I admit that I can't care, because they can easily accept that I would if I could, and thats what ultimately counts. Or else I'd never have a friendship. But yeah, I agree on the other points. Except the fourth one, since both sides actually need to be loyal. Which you never specified. Just a small nitpick though, and I believe it was unintended on your part. : ^ )

I think something important about Hermione is that even though she’s brilliant and very intelligent, she too falls for Lockhart’s narcissism. She embodies my own naivete when I was a HUUUGE fan of Twilight. Just equating lies to love🤪 Lockhart is all talk, no walk.

In fact, all of the strange hirings were explained in the books. Hagrid, I think, says Lockhart was the only applicant. Snape was there to be a double agent for Dumbledore.

This is a case of "All there in the manual." According to Pottermore, Dumbledore had two reasons for hiring Lockhart. 1. He actually knew one of the people Lockhart had mind wiped and was seeking proof of Lockhart's misdeeds. 2. Dumbledore considers some life lessons to be more important than scholarly lessons. In this case, Lockhart, as well as Snape, provide great examples of "people you should avoid growing up to be."

Generally all the hires for the defence against dark arts are the only applicants or are there as a favour to dumbledore. Exceptions being Umbridge (sent by the ministry as well as only applicant) and the carrows (death eaters from book 7 after V took over)

I find it kind of funny that in Snape and Lockhart's "duel" Snape takes the time to clearly state the spell he is using and demonstrate it. How kind
When I was younger, Snape scared the day lights out of me. Now at 25 he is one of my favorite characters. Why? Because Snape come off like a jerk yet still kept his heart. I see Snape preparing Harry for just about anything he faces, (primarily because he is Lily's son) yet I also see it as one who kept a distance as to not be hurt again. I theorize that Snape being a jerk to Harry was Snape's way of preparing Harry while keeping him safe. I also theorize that Snape did care for his students, contrary to the shown emotions.
It shows that he always would have been a much better teacher in the subject of Defense Against the Dark Arts. Teaching potions was painful for him, because he was a natural in that subject, and thought that all his students should be able to do as well. Defense was something he actually had to learn, and he was much better at teaching it.

The recognition of Rupert Grint and love for Ron Weasley is why I trust this channel so much 💖 I'm happy you reference reading the books so much because there are important deviations in the movie. Hermione comes across as heroic in the movies. In the books she's definitely the brains ofc but also really annoying and bull-headed, stubborn beyond belief. Only Ron (in the books) has the ability to challenge her beliefs.

I agree Rupert Grint is such an underrated actor. Especially when he needs to portray fear, he does so well. My absolute favorite line is when they land the car in the whomping willow and he has a high-pitched squeal of “what’s happening?!” That takes so much talent to pull off.
They absolutely screwed him over by making Ron in the movies practically purely comic relief when he was so much more in the books. I really hated Steve Kloves, the writer of the majority of the movies, for giving all of Ron's bravest lines to Hermione or just getting rid of it completely. The only movie he didn't write was Order of the Phoenix, I believe, and that was the most fleshed out and interesting Ron got to be throughout the entire series.
Also, you gotta go for the fact that the first 'big actor' purchase was an ice cream van.
Lets not forget the scene with the spiders in the woods. I felt his fear during, and his rage at hagrid afterwords.

Hermione is different in the books. She’s still the top student of her class, but she’s jam packed with annoying antisocial quirks that make her hard to like. Until the boys befriend her she was heading down the Moaning Myrtle path. In her execution of magic she is top grade, but was also full of insecurities. In essence she was a real person with relatable emotions and problems. Many of her flaws are, for the movie removed. Some of these are actually given to Ron. I like the movies, but the characters in the books are better and more complex.

The best theory I've read is that Dumbledore hired Lockhart to teach Harry how narcisism is bad and how this kind of behaviour could lead him to cuestionable actions. It was very important to teach Harry that being humble is essential to defeat Voldemort. Dumbledore himself was not so humble when he was a teenager, and that was one of the reasons why he joined Grindelwald. But Harry was a only a 12 year-old boy who had just found out he was the most famous young wizard of the century... He had to be sure Harry would be able to understand Gilderoy was not a good example to follow. That is a theory I've seen in SuperCarlin Brothers channel

This would be a really bad administrative choice on behalf of Dumbledore if it is actually his reasoning. To knowingly subject a whole school to a sub-par teacher for an entire year just to give a potential and completely unrelated lesson to one student? The worst that could have happened is that students could get hurt in class while the best case sanario is that students waste a year learning nothing or even bad strategies in this very important subject. Either way both are unacceptable if he knew going in because damage was done.
Besides, even if you think tanking the education of an entire school for one student is acceptable the flaw with that reasoning is that Harry grew up in a house with 3 narcissists who were emotionally abusive to him. Because of that he already knows that thinking and behaving like that can hurt people and make you do bad things. Exposing Harry to another narcissist in a position of power over him wouldn't necessarily make any difference at all, or could have made a negative difference instead of a positive one.

I’ve always liked the theory that every time Dumbledore hires a new defense against the dark art teacher he’s just…. Massively overcorrecting. For example:
First teacher actually has Voldemort on the back of his head?? Hire someone who is DEFINITELY not a death eater
Second guy is an incompetent narcissist? Hire the most humble and capable man ever
Third guy was kicked out by parents for his questionable background as a “dark creature”? Hire a guy who was literally the best at fighting dark creatures.
Fifth teacher was the ministry’s evil pet spy? Replace her with your own personal pet spy!

My mom’s one of those “harmless” (I usually call it the “wounded”) Narcissist. Most people have no idea she is the way she is, because she typically keeps to herself. But because we have a really intense relationship, I’ve confronted her a few times, and oh boy the level of viciousness and cruelty she is capable of….its honestly both terrifying and heartbreaking.
You can’t save a Narcissist. You can’t help them- they might be aware that something is different about them compared to other people, but they’ll never admit the reason is down to how they treat people. And even if somehow they do manage to ask for help, its only so they don’t suffer social consequences.
Your mum and my mum should drink with each other. Cuz i know your mum sucks at drinking like mine and they’ll hate themselves by mirroring each other.

Life experience has taught me narcissists, like anyone else suffering mental illness, will only get better if THEY want it (if they even believe they need help to start with). All the help in the world will not change closed minds.
Sadly, at least with the current state of society, saving a narcissist costs far more resources than it does to save their victims it seems. Unfortunately this has given a lot of people and therapists included they're a lost cause, or not worth it. Admittedly.... I agree, at least until governmental society treats narcissism as serious as a problem that it truly is.

*Gladly* the first thing you should probably know is that Dumbldore is a manipulator. Not in a malicious way, but he isn't against playing people as pawns. While at first, his actions, especially with employment might seem random, is it anything but. First, we'll star with why he hired Gildory Lockhart. There were two reasons behind this choice. One was to reveal Gildory as the fraud he is. (Dumbledore knew many of the people that Gildory were taking his accomplishments from) Second, he is the only person who applied for the job besides Snape. He doesn't want Snape teaching the class as he relies on him. Ever since Voldemort was turned down the position, the role has been cursed so they'll only last a year. While it doesn't guarantee that Snape would be run off the premises forever, it's best not to risk it until all the cards are played.
As for Trelawny, Trelawny normally might be a bumbling fool (MIGHT, there are theories that's she's much better than she let's on), when applying for the position at Hogwarts, she gave THE PROPHECY (ya know, the one that set the whole story into motion? Yeah that was her) in order to keep the prophecy safe and not have Trelawny used against him, Dumbledore hires her to work at the school, keeping her close. As for Snape. One Snape is a brilliant potions master, no doubt. But the main reason for his employment is because of his identity as a triple agent. He is the Order of the Pheonix's eyes and ears among the death eaters. He was pivotal in the final fight against Voldemort. Snape is one of Dumbledore's most trusted confidants. Keeping an ex-death eater (and still loyal one in Voldemort's eyes) employed is Dumbledore's con, keeping Voldemort under the ruse he is less smart than he is. Dumbledore is many things but there is one thing he is not. Random.
Another thing about Trewlaney is that it's alluded to that she's related to Cassandra of mythology, who was cursed with the gift of perfectly accurate prophecy, but nobody would believe her.
One of the people that voldemort was always (and still was) afraid of, was dumbledore. Not sure dumbledore could convince voldemort he was that dumb?

@@chrismccaffrey8256 As far as I know Voldemort doesn't respect Dumbledors philosophy of trusting people and seeing the good in them i.e. he thinks Duimbledore is dumb to trust people as deeply as he does. He thinks it makes Dumbledore weak because he can use Dumbledores trust against him, which he tries with Snape and Malfoy in Half-Blood Prince. We learn though Snapes memories in Deathly Hallows that Dumbledore was actually a step ahead in both these attempts, because the trust he put in Snape was justified.
As a child I always thought I was perfect, because people around me treated me as a gifted child. Reality hit me hard and since then I always question myself, when ever I get on a high level of "omg I am so good" xD I am so glad to have this voice in my head, that questions me. I am so afraid hurting people.
Boomer parents had this idea that telling kids how smart and special they were would condition them into being smart/successful. The problem here is that there is always going to be a mediocre population made up of most of the population so now we have a generation of ‘gifted kids’ who feel like narcissists because they KNOW they’re actually pretty average but they have a voice in their head from childhood telling them how smart and special they are, and this cognitive dissonance leads to stress. Our generation and especially the current youth are focusing on the idea that being The Best is not the goal of life, rather to figure out who you are and what you have to contribute to society in a way that makes you happy, and to find joy in that process rather than in status.

Starting with the Defence Against the Dark Arts, position. It is because Tom Riddle graduated from Hogwarts and immediately asked the headmaster at the time, Professor Dippet, for the position because he loved Hogwarts and the Dark Arts, but Dippet denied him claiming he was two young at 18. 20 years later, Tom - now known as Voldemort - returned again and asked Dumbledore for the DADA position. This time, Dumbledore was well aware that Voledemort had malicious intention to recruit students as followers, so he said no. Voldemort then placed a jinx on the position in retaliation so that any applicant for the DADA position would last no more than a year; their departure could be anything from simply resigning to being killed. The jinx was so complicated that no one could undo it, not even Dumbledore with the Elder Wand, so over time, the position gained it's infamous reputation which made applicants scarce as well as decreasing the quality of the DADA education for students which was a great strategy on Voldermort's part.
So, in Lockhart's case, he was hired because there were slim to none applicants, he could easily be persuaded into taking the position by stroking his ego, and he also served as an example for Harry as to what can happen if you let fame get to your head. Altough, Dumbledore probably saw Lockhart as an option and thought "this'll be hilarious."
Snape actually wanted the DADA position the entire time he was teaching at Hogwarts but Dumbledore never let him because it was jinxed and Snape was a valuable and key asset in his plan to defeat Voldemort because Snape was a double agent. Although, the only reason Snape was a teacher in the first place is because he was indebted to Dumbledore for protecting Lily (woman he was obsessed with his whole life) and her son, Harry, whom Voldemort was after once the prophecy about his demise was leaked. I read some comments that were pointing out that Snape could have done anything else apart from being a teacher to serve Dumbledore, but I believe the reason he kept Snape as a teacher was because it allowed for easy, convenient and safe meetings with his double agent whenever he needed, and it made it easy to keep an eye on the man since I'm certain Dumbledore did not trust him in the beginning nearly as much as he did in the end.
Quirrel's time spent as the DADA teacher is another one of the inconsistencies in the HP universe. Hagrid sort of implied that Quirrel had been a teacher for more than a year in Philosopher's Stone, saying he went on a sabatacal for a year before returning; but with the jinx there that shouldn't be possible. In the Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery game and on Pottermore, Quirrel is the Muggle Studies teacher. So there can be many ways Quirrel got the DADA position, my thought is that he went on sabbatical, met Voldemort and made the unicorn blood deal thing resulting in having Voldemort's face on the back of his head, then returned to Hogwarts applying for the DADA position under the influence of Voldemort who still wanted that job for recruiting purposes or something.
Trelawney is the Divination teacher because Dumbledore is keeping her out of the Death Eater's hands. She is the one that made the prophecy about Voldemort's demise which sparked Voldemort to kill the Potter's and send Belatrix after the Longbottom's. Dumbledore did not want Trelawney working anywhere she could get snagged by Death Eaters, so that's why he kept her there. Also because she does in fact has Seeing abilities, that albiet rarely show.
Other teachers reasons for being hired: Lupin was a willing applicant because he needed work as an outcasted werewolf in a discriminatory society. Umbridge was placed there by the Ministry. Moody was supposed to be there as a favour to Dumbledore but then he got jumped and kidnapped by Barty Crouch Jr.. Slughorn was hired because he had the memory about teaching a young Tom Riddle what horcruxes were that Dumbledore needed. Snape was DADA teacher in sixth year and then in seventh year he was promoted to Headmaster.
Every other teacher was normal.

The best explanation of Dumbledore hiring Lockhart I’ve heard is that Dumbledore purposefully did it as a means to teach Harry the importance of not letting the fame get to his head. See the Carlin Brothers’ theory on Dumbledore’s big plan throughout each book.

Remember Snape accused Dumbledore of “raising him as a pig for slaughter.” That Dumbledore didn’t protect him to save him but die when he believed Harry needed to. A sense that Dumbledore “allowed” certain characters and events to happen so Harry would be able to face Voldemort. Perhaps even have a reason to fight for good when had experienced so much trauma and pain.

Initially before we knew about how the elder wand came into possession of a wizard (disarming) I assumed Dumbledore had killed someone to get it (then come by time we learn that Grindlewald had the wand and that Dumbledore in his young years in a final duel manages to disarm him. (That being since Voldemort visited Grindewald in Azkaban)

He hired Remus, cause he couldn´t find any job.

Then he wasn´t succesful hiring anyone else, that´s why Umbridge came on scene.
Then he needed Horace to come back, AND to keep Severus close, so he had no other option, than giving him the post of DADA teacher, even if he refused several times before (knowing that the post is cursed).
And knowing, that Harry will have to fight Voldemort face to face in the future truly reveal why he made so many things - as unpopular as they are. I´m not going to defend him, but there is a big question mark... Would Harry be able to do all of that... if he grew up... idk.. maybe with the Weasleys? Knowing his fate from the beginning?

About your notion that Dumbledore had killed someone to earn the Elder Wand, this is a theme borrowed by Tolkien. If you check in the Lord of the Rings, the times people get it wrong is staggering! And the actions that follow often define the final outcome (Denethor thinking the war lost because he THOUGHT Sauron got the Ring, Sauron's hasty attack on Minas Tirith because he THOUGHT Pippin had the Ring and was hiding it there, to name the two examples that really stand out from memory).
One can go as far as say that Dumbledore is Gandalf with his hands more dirty! Gandalf never raised anyone to die at an opportune moment, he just gave people a "push" towards the righ direction and filled their hearts with hope. Dumbledore left very little to chance, when he needed to HE stooped low so others wouldn't have to - heck, he even arranged his own death to spare that little pri!ck Malfoy's soul being damaged. In the end it all worked and nobody is going to accuse Dumbledore of anything, you know why? Because "all is fair in love and war" and this was war like no other!

Dumbledore always gives each person he meets the benefit of the doubt ESPECIALLY if everyone else has turned their backs on them or don’t like them in some way. He gives people the opportunity for more than what they think they deserve

Ultimately, the greatness of Dumbledore lies in seeing a story unfold and letting things progress naturally without arrogantly intervening at every turn.
That is a level of trust that not many adults would give to a child,
as it goes, Harry completed his journey as well as he did because Dumbledore had the wisdom to make some of these 'questionable choices'.
It always breaks my heart that they took away the bushiness of Hermione's hair in the later films, as well as her flaws. They made her so endearing to me in the books. She was always brilliant, but insecure, and she overcompensated for it a lot. Over time she became a less insecure, but she was still always a little overbearing and impatient. But the films felt the need to make her perfect and flawless, which is such a shame, as it made her less relatable.

It’s because Emma Watson grew up into a pretty young woman. She was very charismatic in front of the camera, which made her a fan favorite. That’s why they changed hermione. And honestly, that’s a little disappointing. But I understand. Money comes first.

Because they're both generally speaking despicable and toxic people, but in the exact opposite ways.
Lockhart is a loud narcissist who is all smoke and mirrors, where as Snape is a very reserved and quiet person who is filled with loathing for the majority of things both around him, and in him, so he quite literally doesn't care for spectacle, and is the perfect character to bring him down a peg, and oddly enough bring focus to the class again, I'd almost say that these two balance each other out as teachers in that scene.
I think I disagree a bit about Snape. What he really loathes is himself. He is drowning in guilt and remorse. He drove the one person he loves away and is indirectly responsible for her murder.
That's why I said the loathing is both directed around him and within him, partly he can't help but blame the world for contributing to everything he's experienced ever since he was a kid, and partly because he blames himself for a lot of things that he's done. His view of the world and his view of himself largely mirror each other, not exactly out of coincidence.

All he feels is hate and self-loathing. He is a tragic figure even though most of it was caused by his own actions.
My favorite part of the dueling club sequence are the looks that Rupert and Daniel give Snape. That says A LOT about the fact that even though they know he can be a bully, they're still willing to support him, and actually cheer on Severus for taking Lockhart down several notches.
I wish I could request a look at Ginny and her character development and how she handled her trauma from Chamber of Secrets, but the movies took all of that out.

I shit you not: Harry was surrounded by admirers, he had just saved the Philosopher's Stone the year before, he's still very new to this whole world. Dumbledore was worried that he'd get side-tracked by it all. Also, he hired BOTTH Snape and Trelawney (spelling...?) to keep them safe, since Snape was a traitor to the Death Eaters, and Trelawney had made the prophecy about Harry and Voldemort, and Dumbledore was worried that, if he left her in the open, she would be found and tortured for information.

That doesn't make much sense; Harry was left with his relatives to help deflect the possible side effects of fame. Growing up away from the wizarding world was supposed to help Harry remain grounded against the obsessions of his longtime admirers since the event of his parents' death (merely going off of Dumbledore's initial reasons and not the unexpected effects it had, like the childhood abuse). Why would Dumbledore need to drive this further if he'd already made sure the kid was away from all of that fame for the majority of his childhood and during his end-of-year holidays? For Snape and Trelawney, though, I do agree; that was for their protection, and insurance in case she had another prophetic episode and to keep Snape's talents away from the DE fanatics.
Doesn't justify putting them in charge of educating children. I'm sure there's all sorts of alternatives he could have thought up and instead hired good people.
Does anyone confirm that's true? Sure that's a good idea on paper and from a narrative stand point but did the headmaster of a school really hire a man to curb one students ego and ruin an entire schools magical knowledge of defense? So many kids must have failed their exams..

The only reason why Dumbledore hired Lockhart was because he could not find anyone else for the job (It is said, and later confirmed, that the Defence Agains the Dark Arts job was cursed by Voldemort). And it was stated that if there was no one for the job, the ministry would interfere there. Dumbledore didn't want the Ministry to interfere with the children's education (and as you can see, that happened in the 5th film with Umbridge and it was a completely disaster). Dumbledore also only knew what was written in the books, and could not have known that Lockhart was a fraud. Of course, I'm sure he realized later, but the year was already on, and there was no one available.
I like how he said he's fairly harmless up until the end but Gilderoy f***ed up a lot of people for years before he ended up at Hogwarts, lol.
Even at Hogwarts, he released pixies who trashed his classroom while attacking his students and made Harry's bones disappear? Is that HARMLESS?
I agree. All his stories were stolen from other accomplished wizards. He messed with their minds, and took the accolades they deserved which would affect their careers & fame / respect / social status, etc.

good one, there was very little risk of that, harry hates people crowding him and has very little sense of selfworth but I totaly belive that. It fits with him allowing the abuse of the Dursleys to make him more willing to sacrefice himself for others.
Except that makes him even worse. He decides everyone else not learning a thing in his class is less important than showing he is a fraud and Harry shouldn’t be this way. Like but he also never showed that he acts like Lockhart so he as the teacher should have been professional enough to, instead of trying to expose someone as faking all their fame, hire someone who will educate his students.

There was quite a lot of healing in Harry with him being exposed to good, albeit grey, examples, like Ron and Hermione, Molly and Arthur, the twins who treated him like a cousin, Lupin, Sirius.... @@tiffanypersaud3518 He gets so much love, but it gets never normal for him, he always sees it as those people beeing great, not him deserving it, so sacreficing himself for them is easy . . .there still is one problem, the lack of a sympathetic figure for the 10 years he lived with the Dursleys, empathy is a learned trait and if you do not recive it you also can not give it. He needed at least one person who loved him in that time so he would even be recetiv to love when he comes to Hogwats and finds his family but beside that, who he is, what he lived through and how he reacts makes a lot of sense.
Molly is very strikt with her own boys for otherwise it would all desolve in utter chaos and she knowes, they know she loves them still. With Harry on the other hand she is always careful and kind for he does not has this surety and he is so eager to please, that she does not need a roughther hand with him. Many attribute it to him beeing Harry Potter, but mostly it is about him beeing a hurt kid so she feels the need to compensate all the coldness and harshness he had been exposed to. I love Molly a lot for that ^^

If he had been able to prove what he did as true, he likely would have gotten a first class, which is quote: awarded for acts of outstanding bravery or distinction in magic.

The difference between them is that Lockheart makes his assumption based on one approximately fifteen-seconds-long encounter, and he probably carried that for the handful of months he was at Hogwarts. Snape, however, seemed to be in plain, simple denial of the truth. I also love that bit of acting Smith and Rickman do: Snape sets up a challenge, McGonagal senses it and kicks the goal he set. The characters do it in the book, too (with Flitwick and Sprout chiming in too, I think, but it’s been some time since I’ve read it), but it is. Fabulous. To see these two *legends* play it that way. You can clearly sense Snape stepping forward, see McGonagal’s eyemovement from Snape to Lockheart looking for a delibetate clue for Snape. Then once she’s satisfied that yes, that was intentional, she carries it the rest of the way (the Heads are with her.)
…I really wish we got to see more of that sort of Solidarity in the books, but, alas. (If we did we’d have seen Dumbledore ousted like they later oust Deepcover!Snape. And we’d have seen a REAL plan taking shape-at least for the students’ education. Which if they had a better education, that alone would’ve prepared them for the coming war far better than Dumbledore’s mindgames and constant willful endangerment of student safety + intentionally hiring buffoons vs finding any number of workarounds for the Curse.)
My favorite theory for why dumbledore hired who he did is this.
Lockhart- to show Harry what he could become and why he should stay humble
Snape- to keep him close because he’s dumbledore’s secret spy
Trelawney- because of her the unpredictability of her real prophecies and as she made the one about Harry and Voldemort he doesn’t want her getting in the hands of the death eaters
Interesting fact: Dumbledore hired Lockhart to get him outed as a fraud. He knew two of the wizards that were charmed by Lockhart.
When Lockhart is in the office and it’s revealed he charmed his own memories.

He hired Lockhart because he had too. No one else wanted the job of defense against the dark arts because it was cursed by Voldemort

That's not a fact. In fact, Hagrid tells Harry at the beginning of book 2 that Lockhart was the only applicant for the position. Dumbledore had very little choice other than to hire him.
The "outing Lockhart as a fraud" thing is part of a larger fan theory attempting to explain the alarming ineptitude of Hogwarts faculty as some sort of long-con scheme Dumbledore had to train Harry.

The best thing about Lockhard isn't even in the movies. In the books (book 5) when he is brought to St. Mungo's to be treated for memory loss the nurse tells the squad that he still has no idea who he is, but he still loves to give autographs and that is the most Lockhard thing ever. I love it!

Ron was my absolute favorite character in the books, but they made him absolutely awful in the films, but I will say, Rupert did a great job with the direction he was given.
Yep. I loved Hermione in the books, she was a human. Perhaps very talented and smart but a human with flaws. The movie just made her into the ultimate Mary Sue.
The actors who can play crazy, obsessive, narcissistic characters and do it well have so much talent. If they anger or annoy you, they are doing their job, and doing it well.❤
I think a lot of the personalities of the teachers at Hogwarts reflect a typical public/private boarding school experience in the UK. Having a mixed bag of teacher personalities, including some who display characteristics on the spectrum of abusive behaviour is/was quite normal here, in addition of course to the lofty academic expectations put on the children. Reading the books as a child I very much took this environment for granted in the story, as it was so obvious having grown up in the UK and witnessing those academic values and that kind of behaviour.

In the book Harry and Ron see through Lockhart instantly in the class when he lets the pixies out but Hermione's too busy fangirling over Lockhart to see him for what he is. She believes everything in his books is true, keeps a get well soon card from him under the pillow of her bed in the hospital wing and justifies him running away leaving her, Harry and Ron to put the pixies back in the cage as wanting to give them "hands on experience." She also brushes off Lockhart's incompetence leaving Harry with no bones in his arm as a mistake.
Also Rupert grint was just an AMAZING actor in the HP series my mother pointed this out when I was 12 and the movie came out, that while the other children were good actors, Rupert was just... brilliant. He came alive. The character came alive. His facial expressions, his voice, he had such comedic talent at such a young age. A true gem of this series.

OMG… I’d entirely forgotten that Snape was the one who showed Harry the “expelliarmus” spell. He kept Harry safe after all…
Snape also gave Harry his old potions book which had TONS of amazing spells Snape had researched himself as a student. He was always trying to give Harry ways to defend himself. And other students,too. Unless I am mistaken, Snape told them about the bezoar as a cure for poison in 1st year and again in his potions book. Harry used that information to save Ron's life 5 years later (he had drunk poisoned mead).
@@CatGold5047 Snape didn't give Harry his old potions book. It was a book that was in the Potions Room for who-knows-how-long and that was probably left on its own as students who failed to purchase their own potions book would likely choose the better-looking one.
I loved the random foreshadowing how seemingly innocuous things from previous books became key later on like the vanishing cabinet and the bezoar. Not to mention how the clumpsy Neville became of huge importance at the end of the story
Yes, very safe. By making Harry’s life as miserable as he could, therefore making Harry more likely to make rash and dangerous decisions. And also refusing to continue teaching Harry Occlumency, which was vital in the plan to defeat Voldemort. What a competent guy.
@@Doomzdeh Oh, don’t get me wrong. I am of the firm belief that Snape in 95% scum. Truly, and aweful person who could not get past his need to bully others. Which is why I find his extreme bravery in standing up to Voldemort, as well as his attempts, like “expelliarmus”, to keep Harry safe, however small and feeble those attempt were, so very facinating. Terrible people can sometimes do one great good thing, just like very good people are capable of truly evil deeds. I love when those characters show up in writing- it makes everything so interesting.
I am so glad that never while under the hold of my savior complex did I meet any narcissists or other people who may have tried to use it against me. As it was, it was a nightmare to work through, and it did some damage, but all of the people that I ended up with from it at some point tried to help me as well, even getting me therapy.
