I saw the Allman Brothers Band several times in the 70's. I was so sorry that we had alewady lost Duane. Ive seen Gregg twice in clubs in Atlanta. I loved their music. They will always be in the top 5 of my favorite bands. Live at the Filmore East is probably my most favorite Concert. I have watched it so many times, wishing I could have seen Duane.
Attended Jethro Tull concert in Portland, Maine. ABB was playing the following week, bought the tix. We lost Duane the day before, yet he’s still among us. God Bless The Brothers So sad!

Just hard to believe how young he was as he poured out the deepest, ageless blues and stunning, melodic leads over essentially gothic Southern waltzes. On this track his singing reminds me of a young Fenton Robinson. Duane has been the pinnacle of guitarists to me since first hearing Eat a Peach and Derek and the Dominos in '73.

He's not playing slide here, though. He just uses a real trebly tone which sometimes fools people. You can hear him bend notes (ie vibrato) and clear fingering in later solos.
His use of dynamics and phrasing was genius. Second to NONE. He knew how to set up a note in the perfect moment during a song, and with what intensity to play said note. Truly one of the greatest of all time. In my personal Top 3.

Awesome I am going to see the trio this fall. Eat at H&H, see the big house and Capricorn and 2 crash sites. I have loved them since a young child with uncles listening to all their albums constantly. Remember Fillmore being played back to back over and over till Grandma went nuts and yelled at them. Still can not believe he was only 24, what extreme talent and soul for the time.
Lucky! I'm gonna take my dad there one day. ABB is his favorite band ever. So much so that he named me after Duane. TBH, I want to go see The Big House probably as much as my dad does lol
@@becsailor1822 for me, that's part of what makes him the best guitar player that ever lived. He was that good & that accomplished at only 24 years old. Only played for about 10 years from what I understand. Imagine how good he'd have gotten had he lived past 24 yrs old. There would be no discussion about whether or not he's the best. It'd be a fact that could not be denied by anyone.
I am a hardcore blues fan and this track is AWESOME! I can't imagine anyone NOT feeling this! But it goes Different strokes for different folks! I felt it from head to toe! Did I say it was good? LOL
Beautiful version of Muddys tune. As only Duane could do. The best. Straight out of Muscle Shoals singing River. Cheers from Montreal Quebec Canada 🇨🇦 😎🇺🇸
There's something about a good blues performance that hits you deep. Great that you mentioned Howlin Wolf. One of my favorite of his tracks was Red Rooster False Start & Dialogue off the London Sessions. Telling Clapton and Charlie Watts and the boys how it's done saying stuff like, "Ok let's everybody get together now & we'll try to make it" and "always stop at the top, see?" Great stuff. Duane Allman RIP.
Not to forget that the band is just playing the bestest damn back-up that ever was. They just have such feel, such a sweet touch on their instruments. Nothin' flashy, just full of soul. Soul.
One of Duane's very best. He pulls so many tricks out of his bag of licks on this one. Other than his obvious vituosity on the guitar, sometimes underappreciated is the tastiness of it all. Never overplays, seems to always add the perfect phrase at the perfect moment. Check the tiny lick at 7:06 ...the water drip lick. Sounds just like a slow drip of water finally releasing itself into a drop. Gorgeous and difficult to do with that kind of amazing clarity.
Nothing like listening to Duane. Shear entertainment from the master. One day I listened to all blues artists in iTunes and his music was what stood way out.
There's very few songs that just pull tears from me n this is one of em. Such a amazing talent lost so young. Enjoy what you have while you have it. Peace n love!
No one ever mentions the vocals. I loved them - but that guitar - man this was Duane's finest. Duane and Peter Greene - that's all your ears and head need,.2 guys who listened to the masters, absorbed and chucked out something better. Oh shit. Duane's killer performance.
nope. it's not. it is boz scaggs. duane is only playing guitar. duane rarely sang on anything. he only sang a couple of songs, early in his career. go look at the album....and check the performers on the cut. you'll see it's boz scaggs on vocals.
This was a great album to get stoned to, add little wine, some good herb and this albums blues songs would rip my head off my shoulders!! Sometimes a little T.H.C. really set me off for hours. This is such a great blues album!!! The guitar rips up my head!!!
Duane, excuse me, (Sir Duane) has been my pick as the all time greatest,24 year old, on a six string ever. We will never, ever, have anyone come along, that can touch him, ever. I'm WAY BLESSED!! to be a chronic, adamant, Allman Brothers follower, with JJ Cale bringing up the rear, and I must mention Dicky Betts, (Duane said it himself, Dicky was as good as he was.) I will also throw in Henry Vestine and the awsome guitar players from Canned Heat. I will also add, I'm from Memphis, Tn., I also thank Sam Phillips and Sun Records, without Sam, rock and roll would not be what it is.
First saw the Allman's since 1971. Duane captivates my heart like no other guitarist. Pure magic. But I'm no expert on them though I've listened to Live at Fillmore 5 million times. But I never bought most of their other albums. Definiely Eat A Peach (Part of Fillmore) and Brothers and Sisters and some Idlewild South. Probably a couple of others. If I did I would have heard Duane sing before now. WOW! Thanks for sharing!!!
Aint no color in this music that i hear. This man had his natural soul in his music. I really like this and it could hang with anyones version black white brown red yellow. Gets to be kind of stupld sounding. Damn he sounds good
I do like me some Duane. I had tickets to see the original Allman Brothers Band in 1971 in Kentucky and Duane had his accident and of course died. They postponed and came back so I saw the lineup with just the five of them. Berry Oakley died not long after the gig I saw. Next saw 'em 1975 in South Carolina and Dickey Betts was still the sole guitar man and he took that entire concert, put it on his back, and carried it to high Heaven. It was impressive, he really rose to the occasion. I would have sold my soul to have seen him and Duane onstage together and sold my soul twice to get a good seat to view it even mo' better.
That would not be me . I live in Daytona, heard the two practice some while they were here & play once when I sat outside a nightclub. After that about 4 concerts, could not travel much , still in high school , saw them when I could. Miss those days. 68 now, still listening, thank God for internet, Live long& rock on!!!
I take umbrage with that! I am 67 and went to many, many concerts of the Allmans, CCR, Lynyrd Skynyrd, BB King, and many that most younger than I could not have seen. Blues is it, but All Southern Rock was good!
I know Duane wasn't much for his own voice, but I like it's quiet, wistful quality. Killer guitar tone here, too. Sorry he never cut a bunch of solo records.
@Mastas999 Cleartwater here, listening to this fine action of Duane Allman. Never have heard a dropped note or choid. I agree with you he was the best tpo ever live. Never got into Derek Trucks. Duane's guitar can talk to you if you listen close. Going down slow is supurb. The action of his fingers are amazing. Listen to the little whinney riffs he plays they are talking to you. Never another like Duane, Cleartwater,
Bob, I've come across you a couple times and all I can say is...You know your shit! Love to you and all the people you love...thanks for going and representing. Everytime one of us goes to visit them, you represent for all of we loyal and loving fans and friends. Again, I hope you had a good time, and thank you....
LOL
I feel the same
Beautiful version of Muddys tune. As only Duane could do. The best. Straight out of Muscle Shoals singing River. Cheers from Montreal Quebec Canada 🇨🇦 😎🇺🇸
One of best ever and One of most underrated ever too. RIP
not underated by people that know and appreciate great musicianship
Not underrated by anyone. If God himself put a video on UA-cam someone would call it underrated.
Skydog attacks that guitar like no other mortal, the feel he achieves just melts you into the song......
Duane is a Genius t !! Pure heart !
His phrasing leaves you gasping
Not to forget that the band is just playing the bestest damn back-up that ever was. They just have such feel, such a sweet touch on their instruments.
Nothin' flashy, just full of soul.
Soul.
You're the man Duane, Slide In Peace
One of Duane's very best. He pulls so many tricks out of his bag of licks on this one. Other than his obvious vituosity on the guitar, sometimes underappreciated is the tastiness of it all. Never overplays, seems to always add the perfect phrase at the perfect moment. Check the tiny lick at 7:06 ...the water drip lick. Sounds just like a slow drip of water finally releasing itself into a drop. Gorgeous and difficult to do with that kind of amazing clarity.
bufordbox that was the coolest sound i have ever heard
It's what they call a 'rake' it's not a lick, it's a technique.
I've listened to this song many, many times and never picked up on that. Thanks for pointing it out.
VERY WELL SAID INDEED, MY BROTHER! PERFECTLY IN FACT.
All you knowledge able ppl know why he got so great with the slide. Yes sir he's awesome ❄️😎
Everything we have from this man, all his playing.... was all before his prime. We never got to see and hear the man in his prime.
a highly recommended song for any guitar fan. A classic
Nothing like listening to Duane. Shear entertainment from the master. One day I listened to all blues artists in iTunes and his music was what stood way out.
godamn right!
I can never get enough of him. I can never get too much of him. Ever.
Dude was head, and shoulders above the rest!!
Amen.
I think he gives Gregg a run for his money with this song! ✌️🍑🍄💙
There's very few songs that just pull tears from me n this is one of em. Such a amazing talent lost so young. Enjoy what you have while you have it. Peace n love!
Yes
No one ever mentions the vocals. I loved them - but that guitar - man this was Duane's finest. Duane and Peter Greene - that's all your ears and head need,.2 guys who listened to the masters, absorbed and chucked out something better. Oh shit. Duane's killer performance.
His vocals are just down right "SEXY" !!!! Paired with his guitar this is just, like you said, his finest!!!!
the vocals on this song are boz scaggs.....not duane.
stew kupperman it's DUANE on vocals.
nope. it's not. it is boz scaggs. duane is only playing guitar. duane rarely sang on anything. he only sang a couple of songs, early in his career.
go look at the album....and check the performers on the cut. you'll see it's boz scaggs on vocals.
That is Duane most definitely.
This was a great album to get stoned to, add little wine, some good herb and this albums blues songs would rip my head off my shoulders!! Sometimes a little T.H.C. really set me off for hours. This is such a great blues album!!! The guitar rips up my head!!!
you sir, are in the groove
I probably did that to the Filmore East Album a thousand times.
Fuckin aye bro!
Vocals from Duane are perfect!!! He oozed the blues on this one for me...
I will also add, I'm from Memphis, Tn., I also thank Sam Phillips and Sun Records, without Sam, rock and roll would not be what it is.
you forgot Alvin Lee ...

I agree although Derek Trucks has carried on from the Brothers. A different feel but just as soulful.
Al "Blind Owl" Wilson - great man with the slide - died early
Duane has an Awesome voice too
One of the best guitarist ever !!!!
Like that hard rain. He captures the blues so well
We lost a great one ..... greg has done a great job...... my friends and I loved this music and saw many concerts back in the day..... true magic ...
Damn. Most soul from a hippy white dude. And he could play with the best. Shame he was taken so damn soon. His guitar SPEAKS.
Ran in the family man... His brother's vocal on Not My Cross to Bear...
Aint no color in this music that i hear. This man had his natural soul in his music. I really like this and it could hang with anyones version black white brown red yellow. Gets to be kind of stupld sounding. Damn he sounds good
The Allman Bros weren't "Hippies",they were "long hair country boys".They most certainly were not flower children.
You can feel it when he gets that guitar singing!
rest in peace brother allman, what a great lost to the music world
I really miss this man.
I would have sold my soul to have seen him and Duane onstage together and sold my soul twice to get a good seat to view it even mo' better.
you know it doesn't ever get any better than this
I feel bad for anyone over age 55 that never got to be at an AB concert when Duane and Berry and the rest were all doing their magic !
55 ...saw 'em in 75 with Muddy Waters,Boston Garden. No Duane but I was thrilled to be there still.Nobody has done it like Duane.
saw them in 1970 at Hampton Roads Colliseum. Duane, Berry, Greg, Dickie, Jaimoe, and Butch. God they were great!
that would be me,although just 54,
That would not be me .
Sorry he never cut a bunch of solo records.
here we go with that guitar, it tares me wide open, Its true my friend
I feel every line.
The solo is absolutely mesmerizing !!
Yes I agree
@Mastas999 Cleartwater here, listening to this fine action of Duane Allman. Never have heard a dropped note or choid. I agree with you he was the best tpo ever live. Never got into Derek Trucks. Duane's guitar can talk to you if you listen close. Going down slow is supurb. The action of his fingers are amazing. Listen to the little whinney riffs he plays they are talking to you. Never another like Duane, Cleartwater,
The inventor of Southern Rock when he jammed with Wilson Pickett on Hey Jude!!!!
Oh man, this is IT!
RACISM!!!
Incredible how he gives the solo room to breathe on this tune. Some very cool blues lines without overwhelming the tune.
Today marks that tragic sad day!
Love ya Duane! RIP!
🎸❤💙💚💜
Bob, I've come across you a couple times and all I can say is...You know your shit! Your info/insight fills in holes, restores memory, completes a picture. When Duane died I was a dumb ass college student in upstate NY.I'm still a dumb ass but I will forever remember that day I was told he passed....i was hitch-hiking to my girlfriends school and the guy who gave me a ride also gave me the news.I'm 61yrs old, quick of mind and spirit...but I will never forget that day. Take care, Jack
1969/02, Fame Recording Studios, Muscle Shoals.
Duane Allman, Vocal and Guitar / Berry Oakley, Bass / Paul Hornsby, Piano / Johnny Sandlin, Drums
You are the best.
39 years ago today, RIP Duane. You may be gone but your music will live on forever. Best there ever was.
Slide playing aside, DA was and still is one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar. Nothing against Jimi but Duane Allman is my "Hendrix"
Dang! Tears from this old man, thank you, love and peace to all who want it
Pure blues feeling, I had not heard this one-glad I found it, RIP to the man, respect.
I have been an Allman Brother fan since I was a teen, but I am blown away by Duane tonight & I am 60 yrs old !!! No words other than play it Brother !!!
This belongs in a museum.....or if you look up blues in Websters it should say "see Duane's Goin Down Slow"
I like your attitude dude...it does indeed belong in a museum. But glad we have it to listen too.
It should be manditory listening in every school, church & halfway house!
Not to mention Congress, Senate & White House!
just lost my mandate for misspelling :P
not that I ever wanted to date a man ... but if I were a woman, Duane would've been my man!
Geez, we need another Guitar virtuoso like this to come up for my generation. I've always been envious of the 60's... If only I was born 30 years earlier...
Duane is a phenomena. I think the big man upstairs has a incredible band.
so much blues, so mature for such a young man. If you don't feel this you are dead
Would have loved to see him live!!! Headphones and Duane will solve any problems you have.
I just discovered this musician 5 minutes ago and he just blows my mind!
