Absolutely true and unforgettable story: Back in August 1998 travelled in the way north Maine woods, weaving around moose and bear on logging roads around midnight, to get to a white-water kayak paddle the next morning. FM radio stations had petered out long ago. Spun the AM dial and pulled in a Quebecois station - all in French - playing a mind-shattering blues program. Heard versions of songs I've never heard before or since. I've no idea where to find this version. I can't leave this earth without finding it, or something close to it.
The energy, the musical brilliance, the inventiveness, the era, so far away now...the music remaining as the profound connection to a time long past...this jam is for me profound. Clapton and Allman, profound. The loss of Allman, profound. Clapton still around, all, it doesn't get much better than him. Dicky Bettes Great Southern inspires but this is more like the finest port wine, or the smoothest joint one could ever smoke. Jam 5 just gets me cooking overtime all the time. There is not much like this in the world today - a far different world than the road these guys went down. The loss of Allman at such a young age is made all the more poignant and important by listening to genius like this. How do people learn to play music like this? How can they dream ump these rhythms and sounds? So brilliant. So compelling. And Allman gone for so long.
Superb jam, captured right there on the spot - yes, this is music history - and the pictures, posters and cover art here bring the era to life as well. The spirit of hope, soul, a generation on the move, the love of music is right there in these pictures - now reeking with nostalgia, even to those of us who were not even born yet in 1970. I love how relatively un-produced, un-fixed these photos look compared to the airbrushed, glossy pics of hip people in music and movies in the last decade.
September 27, 1971 I drove to Dallas to see the Allman Brothers play at the State Fair Music Hall. Wrecked my car on the way and had to hitch hike to the show. That is a great sounding venue, a concert hall rather than an arena. Best live band I have ever seen live, and I've seen some great shows! I'll never forget the way they played and how Duane directed the whole show with subtle cues and his inspired guitar work. Waiting for a ride after the show I got to talking to a member of the "Children of God", a cult loosely based on Christianity. They tried to recruit me the whole time I was waiting to get a ride home. What a crazy night!
Glad you resisted the cult antics of the COG. They used to tell the girls to go out and find boys and have sex with them to bring them into the cult. They called it "flirty fishing." Interestingly, their cult leader was a Jewish guy named Moses David (I think he adopted that name, but I'm not certain). In 1976, I came to the place of faith in the Messiah, (Yeshua in Hebrew that literally translates "Salvation"). The Angel told his step father, "you shall call his name Yeshua (Salvation) for he will save his people from their sins," Matt. 1:21. I've been held by God's grace in the care of His Holy Spirit for almost 40 years. I am thankful daily for protecting me for false messiah's and religions that put people in bondage. The Truth, Messiah Jesus, will always set you free!.
I remember "The Children of God." No disrespect to anybody - but if you let them "save you" you could always get a box of sandwiches or something to eat! Bumped into them at Mardi Gras, concerts, etc. when I was 15 to 19 years old. Back from 70 to 74.
Clapton may have had a 6th sense to lay down as much as humanly possible- Duane was a shooting star dazzling brilliant passing through our galaxy- Thank goodness we have these to remember their stunning collaboration

I'm RonDog and I'm for real. I'm 66 years old and I love hearing a jam with Eric and his friends. Don't forget Duane Allman and Boz. I don't have a dime but I love the songs.
There's two qualities to Duane Allman that others didn't have. He was a dominant force and he was an emotional player. He made others better around him with a fortitude every second that pushed forward. Listen to interviews of the people who knew him. Also, understand he came into the Layla sessions and made that album. Derek was so down and out. I love Dickey Betts. But Dickey was pushed by Duane to be his best. Dickey wrote his best songs then. Listen to Betts solo on whipping post from Fillmore East. Its beautiful man. Emotional. Give credit to Dickey but Duane was there pushing him AND the whole band. He was a genuine leader.
He pushed Clapton to be his best too. No "slow hand" with Duane around! They played together for hours/days at a time when they met... sadly no one was there recording most of it.
We thought we were so innocent then. Life was different, but it got serious very soon. I had been in the Army when Clapton was playing with Duane Allman, wasn't aware of him until I bought Eat A Peach in 1972, when Duane was already dead. I suppose it was symbolic. At least we have the recordings. He was so great.
Thank god for tommy dowd hes the greatest guy of all time the most humble man i ever knew hes the man who got eric and duane together and put all that great music together for us to still be enjoying i miss tom so much
Gratefully these wonderful Musicians keep living on thru the Music they made--Enriching my heart mind and soul each time i hear them... RIP Duane & Gregg
Lawdy. I have to partied to some really great musicians when I was in college. The Allman brothers and Dicky Betts were the just ONE of the musical groups of theirs and my time. I was young and in college. Got my head bad back then and just rocked with some like minded ppl. Baby Boomer‼️
I was 4 years old when Duane Allman passed. I've been listening to his music since bout high school and never heard this till recently. Gone but not forgotten and am thankful for this music he left, it's kinda like hes still here
Those were the days my freinds, we thought will never end, but alas every good thing must have an end. But it leaves a very sweet residue and that clings to your heart.
My favorite LP. Kept me company -for days- August in Italy, as hubby had to do work. Top 5 if stranded on Island. My favorite Rec. Studio 'cause Criteria gave birth to "Layla". The vocals on Layla make me cry 'cause they are so full of pain and longing. A masterpiece, for sure...
Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to see Duane play live - just a terrific guitarist. Was fortunate to see Derek & the Dominos play in Montreal and have seen Clapton a few times since. The 5 Jams are great and the high slide work on Layla is outstanding. However my favorite Duane Allman piece is his collaboration with Boz Scaggs on "Loan me a Dime". I bought this album 42 years ago and it still gets the back of my hair up. The arrangement is incredible, the Muscle Shoals influence is clear, and Duane's guitar work, particularly the crescendo at the end, is incredible. Playin' with angels!
I was blessed to see both artists . Abb . Before the 1st album charted for $1.50. Saw boz full band in69 , incredible show. Both magnificent artists in their prime
Being from India and never had the chance and opportunities to listen to these singersand musicians of the West, I really feel unfortunate. Even the present Indian generations know nothing about the great artists of the West. Musicwise India is finished.
I have said this before. I was just so very lucky to hear them at the warehouse. Live it was amazing. But this jam surpasses ‘em all. And I’ve heard many of the greats!!!
I recently watched two films on Amazon Prime - the 1st about the beginnings of the ABB, focused on Duane and the 2and film was how the band carried on without him. Both were excellent for any ABB fan. Also, just yesterday I watched a UA-cam video of the ABB with EC at his Crossroads 2013 festival where Warren Haynes, Derrick Trucks and Eric Clapton got ir on with "why does love got to be so sad" Damn, if Derrick isn't the reincarnation of Duane! Truly sad I never got to the Filmore East back in 71 ...just a little tyke still in middle school and barely listening to anything remotely what I consider worthwhile music.
Clapton is playing so well here with the rhythm its unreal. I love how Duane just hangs low in the first half then takes us into outerspace
All time banger.

Very well spoken friend
We thought we were so innocent then. Life was different, but it got serious very soon. I had been in the Army when Clapton was playing with Duane Allman, wasn't aware of him until I bought Eat A Peach in 1972, when Duane was already dead. I suppose it was symbolic. At least we have the recordings. He was so great.
OMG! This is so cool! Who cares who is playing what part, it's just fantastic listenung to them all jam! So much talent!
Some otherworldly licks here by two of the best guitarists in their prime.
Finally! Someone complimenting both players without a foolish who's better comment.
@@timhoovermusicman your quite right
@@rileymcintosh4852 Absolutely agree - this is not a competition. Respect for both.
Thank god for tommy dowd hes the greatest guy of all time the most humble man i ever knew hes the man who got eric and duane together and put all that great music together for us to still be enjoying i miss tom so much
Great jam..thanks. Duane's tone just screams out.
Gratefully these wonderful Musicians keep living on thru the Music they made--Enriching my heart mind and soul each time i hear them... RIP Duane & Gregg
Duane was best.I grew up listening to his work.
Slowhand and Skydog! A gift from heaven
He is was not slow!
Skydog, best ever
@@rickmark9625 that's Claptons bonafide nickname, SMH
@@8sec85gt Slow hand. But Clapton should be called Fast hand.
@@rickmark9625 he's getting his cleanest sound ever on that Strat .I had no idea this gem was here. only thing missing is Buddy Holly.
I'm under self isolation this helps keep me sane thank you
Gone but not forgotten and am thankful for this music he left, it's kinda like hes still here
Toying with musical genius. Magnificent music so well done.
Brilliant. The stuff of legend. Thanks so much for putting this up here.
One of the classic jams ever recorded in my opinion.... Just Plain good music.
It was,Is , and always will be!!!!! Their Music Lives On.
Those were the days my freinds, we thought will never end, but alas every good thing must have an end. But it leaves a very sweet residue and that clings to your heart.
It did not leave me
When your too busy listening to reply.
I wasn't even born yet back then and I love that sound and the music from back then
It’s called : memories
Well put!
Duane, absolute genius. What he could have done.
Duane Skydog
The best of the best. I miss you and your brother a lot. See y’all soon
Kari Kelton , I heard that piece recently and liked it. Loan me a Dime IS a really nice piece of music , like your taste , live long & rock on...
I was blessed to see both artists . Abb . Before the 1st album charted for $1.50. Saw boz full band in69 , incredible show. Both magnificent artists in their prime
Great jam to roll some buds to. Love ya Duane!
What great Music History America Has!
18 minutes of Duane Jamming in the studio.BRAVO...
Thanks for posting this. I love stuff like this. Just a bunch of great musicians jammin' out, playing music just because they love it.
Being from India and never had the chance and opportunities to listen to these singersand musicians of the West, I really feel unfortunate. Even the present Indian generations know nothing about the great artists of the West. Musicwise India is finished.
That's a shame. But thanks for sharing that.
This is insanely good....
I have said this before. I was just so very lucky to hear them at the warehouse. Live it was amazing. But this jam surpasses ‘em all. And I’ve heard many of the greats!!!
just got to the end, absolutely brilliant, the whole unit are 100% tight
Nice collaboration effort. Both legends, both vintage cool tunes.
Gone but not forgotten, this jam sums up my life as I remember it....IT''S ALL GOOD...Still Groovin' ..... The Fatman
