How could anybody give this a thumbs down? The best blues guitars I've ever heard. I'm 67 years old a musician been listening to these guys from the beginning and this one still raises the hair on my arms.
i think i'm the same age as you, i'm 69 , born in 1954. i became a radio dj during the summer of 1969 between 9th and 10th grade. i continued in radio until 2017 when i retired due to owner problems. i have been a Allman Bros fan since the first time i heard them in 1971.
I am 67 also and the hair on my neck goes up every time I hear this as well. This song is so emotionally raw. I saw them in '75 but alas Duane and Berry were already gone.
When I was a teenager, I was in a local rock-n-roll band in Decatur Alabama. My buddy and I would walk across the street to watch these guys "practice" their songs in the neighbors garage - before they hit the road and got famous. At the time they were between names (Allman Joys/Hourglass). One night they practiced Stormy Monday all night. The same song over and over. No other songs. Only Stormy Monday. We had school the next day so we had to go home at about 11pm. They were still practicing this song. Greg kept saying that something was wrong with the song. I thought it was perfect every time. So they played and played until they worked all the bugs out. Hourglass then went on to become the Allman Brothers. Pure dedication.
+Michael Melonas "Greg kept saying that something was wrong with the song." Perhaps what was wrong was that they had not yet landed on going from b-flat minor 7 to D11 then c minor 7 over e-flat bass in the turnaround. Those unique changes are not on the 1947 T-Bone Walker recording, and they're almost never properly played by cover bands. Stormy Monday is called way too often at blues jams. If not played thoughtfully and with restraint, it quickly becomes wearisome and annoying.
Duane's solo (first one) is as perfect a solo as exists in the annals of rock. Every note, every bend, every tone, absolutely flawless. Best white blues players ever, and likely the finest rock band of all time
This is and always will be the best ever version of this song ! Timing ,, every note , every drum & cymbal hit, every chord timing and Gregg singing with all his heart : does not get any better !
One of Duanes greatest solos. His phrasing is unmatched - even today he is arguably the greatest electric blues guitar player ever. His sense of timing and interplay was remarkable , and we are so blessed they recorded this magic at the Fillmore.
I agree. His playing style was very special. No guitar playing moves me like Duane, such an emotional style. His greatness reminds me of what we lost when he passed.
Arguably the best version of this song. Greg on vocals, dickie & duane playing their hearts out. The band has their entire, original lineup on this album. This album may have captured the ABB at their best. Legendary.
ok so tears are streaming down my cheeks. i miss these boys i'm not getting old..... music is just not the same. please come back so i can leave this world happy
This song could go on for 2 hours and I would still be in a state of southern blues roots nirvana! Gregg, Berry, Jaimoe, Butch, Dickie and the impossibly brilliant Duane...my favorite Allman Bros performance of all time. And one of many heartfelt Duane solos that are technically difficult, but even more soulfully astonishing...The Allman Brothers in the flower of their youth and at the peak of their incredible and gifted musicianship.
you all probably dont care at all but does someone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot my account password. I appreciate any tips you can give me
i was Privileged enough to have seen them many times with Duane and Dickie playin Together, it was a PHENOMENAL EXPERIENCE, they like heaven and hell, then Greg's Organ, and the bass, but it was the Drummer s, between the two of them, they had IT, but i must say, that at a Warehouse in Nawlins was where I sat down on the floor and wept at the duo of Duane and Dickie, literally wept at their playin, no guitarist, not clapton, not jimmy, NOBODY has, or ever will replace that in my memory, becaue at a Warehouse are some of my fondest Rock Memories, from Fleetwood Mac to It's a Beautiful Day, nuff said, jus sayin !😎✌😎!
My cousin always told me: "If I had one album I could take with my on a desert island it would be the Allman Bros. live at the Filmore".....makes sense...
I just heard the whole thing on WJCT recently...sure brought back some great memories! I enjoyed jammin' with them at Forest Inn those Sundays of long ago...smoke was so thick, you couldn't see the wall on the opposite side!
The Allman Brothers Band IS the Best Band of all time, I never tire of listening to any and all of their releases and after 43 years it's still as fresh and filled with spiritual energy as the day I first heard it!!!
Arguably one of the greatest live performances in blues history. The world feels a little less empty. My soul is forever in the past. Thank you ALL for giving this world something that they can feel. RIP
I WAS ALSO AT FILLMORE EAST IN 1971. THE BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE EVERY RECORDED. CAPRICORN RECORDS WAS ON THE BALL. DUANE ALLMAN'S PLAYING IS FANTASTIC AND ACCURATE. QUICKWATER.
Doesn't matter if you're a rapper, a pop diva, a session musician, or a touring blues player. Doesn't matter what instrument you like to play. You must know this tune and you must be able to play it cold the minute you walk into the studio.
Betts is so often overlooked. The band was great at every player. You can hear the different tones and styles if you try. This album is the greatest LIVE rock album ever made.Gregg sang his butt off.
I m gonna lock in the same room the 1000 ppl that commented about knowing about the best album ever and only open when they eventually agree on the same one
I was at the Fillmore when they recorded this live album, about 3 rows back from the stage. Had never heard of them before that night. I was there to hear Johnny Winters and Rick Derringer. But wow, I've seen a lot of bands play live but this was and still is my favorite concert. I remember being mesmerized by the music but especially by the guitar interplay between Duane and Dicky. I didn't want them to get off stage even though Winters was next. My kids love this album.
Saw the original Bros in 1971 in Memphis Overton Park Shell...outside venue.....they played for hours on a cool spring nite......It was sheer Heaven....
I will say it again Betts never got the recognition he is owed but he knew what he signed on for I've never heard him complain and says alot ABOUT the man we all know he is a world class guitar picker and we love you too and THANK YOU SIR
Their songs, words, licks, running freight train instrumentals, like fresh blood running through my veins……. The “All Man”Brothers have been my favorite band of ALL time!!! Seems like my brain is on Alpha Ways, amazing…just love the ride ❤ Thank goodness hearing the old & new versions, my brain tells me the Instrumentals & Vocals are just Perfecto, I adore Them & Friends 😎
Chicken skin every time I listen to this. The Allman Brothers Band at the height of their powers. I'm thankful we had them while we did, and sad we didn't have them with us longer.
+Roger Miller Been listening to this since high school, and I still get chills. Duane made his guitar cry. Mixing Stevie Ray V, Jimi H, and Pat Metheny all into one. Plus the fact that Dickie Betts was on stage was a double added bonus !
it tis what it tis. Great blues and dang glad they were here for a while to let us listen to it now. Enjoy while you can and say thanks. Amen. Peace and Love.
My God with headphones on listening to this song. I can clearly hear every instrument and change up. A good song to calm down and go to sleep. Very late but I think I will listen to it again because once is just not enough.
AND when you want to get "UP", - Whipping Post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lynard Skinner can't hold a candle to these boys. The Allman Bros. are my idea of southern rock.
I think Duane's was the first solo. I never knew for sure who played first. Either way though, Betts was awesome, better than all the others that followed imv.
Saw them in 1970 before they were popular enough to fill big arenas. Small auditorium, maybe sat 200 people in a little town outside of My. Loved me some Allman Brothers, and that concert( jam, more like it) was my birthday present. No one even there at front door to take out tickets!! Walked down to front row which was maybe 5 feet from stage!! Maybe 50- 75 people there on a snowy night, but made no never mind to them that we were few in numbers!! Played their hearts out, they weren't built to do anything less, then they took take a break, went to back corner of stage, light up a " Doobie" and drink a beer, then get back up and go at it again!!! Phenomenal!!!!! Lasted prob 2 1/2 to 3 hours, I guess, lost ALL track of time!! Unbelievable night!!! We watched them drive off into the night, in the snow, in a station wagon, waving at us as they pulled off. Maybe a year later, they were playing to sold out arenas!! Love their music to this day!!
I grew up with Duane and Greg in Pensacola Fl at the Beach ., my brother was a great guitar player and good friends with Duane ., we hung out at the 69 Atlanta Pop Festival on Saturday., unreal.
To me this is the blues at its best my opinion alot of the song just hit that blues spcome into my kitchen is another one such good music soooooo blessed to hear it but sad want them to still b here , but old saying how's it feel to want? Sucks not complainin
THE GREATEST LIVE ALBUM EVER. Gregg Allman was a fantastic blues singer. Chills me to the bone. All were great musician s also. Nobody makes music like this anymore.
Duane died brutally and unnecessarily. He insisted on climbing on his motorcycle after attending a birthday party for Berry Oakley's wife. Never made it home. Striking that Berry was in a fatal accident around a year after Duane's. They are buried side by side at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, GA. It's just too sad to write about two of the greats of the Allman Brothers Band were killed on motorcycles within a year. That is a very big loss for the Allman Brothers Band. However they bounced back famously and did not let these tragedies effect their work. 45 years of great writing and music, that is "ICON STATUS". At the Beacon Theatre in late November was the Allman Brothers farewell performance. I wonder how it was and I am sure that it was a killer performance.
The SHIT these kids play today and make millions off of , well I wouldn't wipe my dogs ass of with their music. This was the real deal...they were the real deal, and it was our time, and shall we never forget those days, and the Allman Bros. Band!
A concert promoter friend of mine bragged to us he had booked a band called the Allman bros. to play outside at the Shell venue @ Overton park in Memphis. He sold all 5000 seats quickly, 35000 people showed up! We sat front row and watched this bands historical performance..
That's awesome and easy to believe. I grew up in Boston and saw them for the first time in about 1972 when I was in the 10th grade. Fillmore East is in my mind the best live album ever. Stormy Monday is amazing. Still one of my favorite bands. Great memories...
ONE OF THE GREATEST SOUTHERN ROCK BANDS EVER! Brings back Many Memory's and Many Tears! One of THE GREATEST LEAD GUITAR PLAYER's ALSO! MAY GOD REST THEIR SOUL's! Ride Hard and Live Free! H.Davidson!
it's really sad we are losing all of the greatest masters of the greatest music ever, never to be replaced, nobody now days has anywhere near the talent.
This band left an incredible legacy. We will never see a band like this again. Just my opinion. Duane and Gregg played the music they loved and grew up with. They refused to "sell out" and become a pop band thank goodness!
I have this album. It is a fantastic vinyl treat. Put your headphones on and just let this wash over you. It won’t be a wasted second I can assure you!!!
no matter how many times i listen to this recording i never seem to tire of it. Duane's technique was just so good. tone, vibrato, dynamics, phrasing, perfect intonation on the bends- the man had it all. and not an insincere note played. each note cuts right through to the soul.
Music like this makes you wish you could build a time machine to see these guys live, but I was blessed to be able to see Greg Allman live at ThunderValley Casino in Summer 2014....Fucking Awesome!!!
Such subtle and deft nuance to their music. Such mastery of dynamics and true soul to their music. You don't find music like this today. Not even close. It's a lost art. Thank God for UA-cam, and people who understand what true music is. Thanks so much posting this!
After 40 years, I still get chills from this awesome band performance! When this album was released, us guitar players longed for, but would never equal Duane'e tone and soul!
Imagine i would be listening to this music in the early 70s thru a cassette. Everytime I would like to hear it again, I will rewind the tape and play the cassette recorder again for another round of listening. How blessed are these present times. I can listen to this over and over again with the comforts of youtube and other contraptions. I did not even know the title of this song, until of recent, but I was scampering for this wonderful music to hear it again. So here we are, listening to the same tune I heard about 40 years ago. God is Good!!!!
this song, this is the best anyone's ever done of Stormy Monday. Every time I hear it it gives me chills and I start singing it like some ole man, some ole man missing his baby, but working hard and barely getting by, but he keeps trying.
IF you haven't left your computer chair in favour of a comfy reading chair with the book Skydog: The Duane Allman Story, you are missing the WHOLE story of a young man drawn to R and B music, and battling dozens of obstacles thrown at him in achieving his life-long goal of forming the best new-concept rock band EVER. Who else successfully used two drummers and two lead guitars, and threw in some improvisation to every concert they ever played. There will never be another band like this one---- they did it all, there's nothing left to do. :)
Still gives me goosebumps to this day, its so damn good. i remember a long time ago i would listen to this with headphones, ALL the problems in the world would dissolve. RIP Gregg.
Saw them live twice in 1970, all the original members...all but one are gone now...their live music was the best ever. Fillmore East album is as good as it gets...RIP ALLMANS...
YOU NEVER KNOW FOR SURE, TILL " YOU FINALLY KNOW",& "THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY OUT THAT DOOR"& "THERE'S A MAN DOWN THERE WAITING FOR ME"{LIGHTEN UP, CAUSE "THAT MAN MAY JUST BE A " MARTIAN"{DOES HE PLAY LES PAUL OR JAZZMASTER GUITAR?}}LOL.,
Goodbye, Gregg. Goodbye Allman Brothers Band. This is the only lineup I ever loved. There will never be another. And this song always bring me to tears.
Best version I have ever heard. Duane is gone but not forgotten. Thank God he left us his music. I believe you can come to know someone through their music and Duane and this song hold a special place in my heart.
I remember sitting in an old blues club in 1980 listening to a group called Mojo Filter cover this song. Their card said "sometimes the blues can make you feel so good" good times. Dwayne Almond is phenomenal!
How could anybody give this a thumbs down? The best blues guitars I've ever heard. I'm 67 years old a musician been listening to these guys from the beginning and this one still raises the hair on my arms.
Me too.
Irreplaceable.

Everything you said!
I am 67 also and the hair on my neck goes up every time I hear this as well. This song is so emotionally raw.

Sometimes thumbs down is a mistake

wow. Aren't we the sensitive and considerate music critic...
Understandable, never thought about it that way. Appreciate your take.
Beautiful take michael, you were there for history. Lucky you.
you are one lucky guy
This remains one of the best blues pieces of all time, even today, over 40 years later.
Absolutely. Duane just tears up the neck of the that wonderful Gibson.
Hell yeah! No doubt about it!
What a great version of this song...........We were so lucky to have this band...This was a Southern band...they were ours.....and I miss them...
Duane's solo (first one) is as perfect a solo as exists in the annals of rock. Every note, every bend, every tone, absolutely flawless. Best white blues players ever, and likely the finest rock band of all time
I always thought that was him in the
first solo, that is one of the best solos
ever , to be sure, incredible talent.
They knew where it came from.
This is and always will be the best ever version of this song ! Timing ,, every note , every drum & cymbal hit, every chord timing and Gregg singing with all his heart : does not get any better !
Greg Allman is amazing on this, his voice and his keyboard are beautiful..

say to a man she is beautiful you are a punk kid I can tell!
One of the most soulful solos ever put to tape.
One of the best blues bands that ever graced this earth.
AMEN.
Agreed

I was stupid forgot my account password. I appreciate any tips you can give me
@Karson Donovan Instablaster ;)
One of my favorite Allman brothers’ songs…beautiful rendition!

charles staats X2
+charles staats I have said the same thing bro; along with a few million others..
I just heard the whole thing on WJCT recently...sure brought back some great memories! I enjoyed jammin' with them at Forest Inn those Sundays of long ago...smoke was so thick, you couldn't see the wall on the opposite side!
And Derek and the Dominos with Duane and Eric.....
Eric Clapton the exploiter of thing great about music. Sorry, but he should have left well enough alone and tried to be original.
The Allman Brothers Band IS the Best Band of all time, I never tire of listening to any and all of their releases and after 43 years it's still as fresh and filled with spiritual energy as the day I first heard it!!!

Greg Allman was the best white blues singer in my opinion. Allman Brothers forever .
Best blues singer.
I would go with best blues
singer ever, I would skip the
color issue altogether.
I'm in Absolute agreement with you for sure.
They do this song better than anyone now before hate comes in I'm only giving my opinion 👌
i never thought i'd listen to a 9 min song and hope it never ends
I've never heard a more soulful rendition of stormy Monday in all my days!!! these white boys have been here before... nuff said!!!
Check out Etta James. She puts more soul in it than anyone.
Bobby Blue Bland in my opinion has the bluest version, but the ABB contemparize it
John Mayall's Blues Breakers with Peter green on guitar did a fine version.
Can blue men sing the whites?
A thousand times upvote!!! The best southern rock of all time!! Who’s better? Long live this music!!!!
Prob best southern white blues band. If we're talking southern rock I think most people know the answer whether they'll admit it is another story 😂😂
I was at the Fillmore when they recorded this live album, about 3 rows back from the stage. Had never heard of them before that night. I was there to hear Johnny Winters and Rick Derringer. Exactly, you put on your earbuds and block out the rest of the world and sink into ABB oblivion.
Yep. I like to listen to different parts every time I play the song. The rhythm section is amazing!
Richard Betts's solo is my all time favorite. The pure tone, the rhythm, the building crescendo. He really told a story.
I think Duane's was the first solo.
I never knew for sure who played
first. Either way though, Betts was
awesome, better than all the others
that followed imv.

@Sandra Smith Great story. I saw them Oct 1971 with about 4000 in attendance at Winterland SF. They were big by then as you said.
They call it Stormy Monday but Tuesday’s just as bad.
These guys knew music so well, the lyrics were worth repeating.

it doesn't get any better than this right here ladies and gentlemen, and probably never will.
“Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy on me”....DAMN! What a shame. As good as I’ve ever listened too. I’ve been a fan for fifty years. It never gets old.
There will never be another that even compares to Duane Allman!!! RIP Duane and Berry ✌
After 5 days of rain in Chicago, this song is music to my ears

Wow! What a legacy Duane left us! RIP sweet guitar man! We love you to this day!
Indeed.
Can you imagine being able to create music that is timeless?
he was the best.....
MrMrfreedom1 Yes!
One of the best, there are many best! I loved em, living in GA i got to see them often.
THE GREATEST LIVE ALBUM EVER. Gregg Allman was a fantastic blues singer. Chills me to the bone. All were great musician s also. Nobody makes music like this anymore.
America's greatest blues rock band.Their albums with Duane are unbelievable.
I agree - I sing this song with my band & it takes me over everytime. If you can't feel it in your soul - you can't play or sing it!
Duane died brutally and unnecessarily. He insisted on climbing on his motorcycle after attending a birthday party for Berry Oakley's wife. Never made it home. Stormy indeed. Love the brothers,
"Stormy Monday is one of my favorites too.
Yes, I read that it was also.
Only 20 fucking 4 years old. Crazy that he accomplished as much as he did by that age.
I named my sons middle name Duane... Best slide ever.

One of my favorites but Duane's solo here is truly a masterpiece.
This is probably their GREATEST performance EVER!
This will play at my wake. God bless the ABB!
Just not too soon brother!
Ringin in the new year 2025 and still jamming to the ABB
A concert promoter friend of mine bragged to us he had booked a band called the Allman bros. to play outside at the Shell venue @ Overton park in Memphis. He sold all 5000 seats quickly, 35000 people showed up! We sat front row and watched this bands historical performance..
ahhhh memories...
That's awesome and easy to believe. I grew up in Boston and saw them for the first time in about 1972 when I was in the 10th grade. Fillmore East is in my mind the best live album ever. Stormy Monday is amazing. Still one of my favorite bands. Great memories...
Live at Fillmore East is my fav album of all time also!!
There's no band like the Allman Brothers of the late 60's.
Rest in peace, Greg. This will always be one of my favorites of your vocals.
ONE OF THE GREATEST SOUTHERN ROCK BANDS EVER! Brings back Many Memory's and Many Tears! One of THE GREATEST LEAD GUITAR PLAYER's ALSO! MAY GOD REST THEIR SOUL's! Ride Hard and Live Free! H.Davidson!
NO bad music from these guys! Wore out plenty of 8 trax, cassettes, & 33 1/3 of this great band!!!
it's really sad we are losing all of the greatest masters of the greatest music ever, never to be replaced, nobody now days has anywhere near the talent.
A true 24 carat masterpiece. RIP, Duane Allman :-(
. Dicky and Duane two of the greats in the same band. Ain't gonna hear nothing like that again in this lifetime.
Duane gets all the credit Dickie did a lot of the playin!
Just a great soulful singer ,Gregg Allman was. He was perfect on this song. Such a Talent!! They shined on this concert!!
This band left an incredible legacy. We will never see a band like this again. Just my opinion. Duane and Gregg played the music they loved and grew up with. They refused to "sell out" and become a pop band thank goodness!
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THE ALLMAN BROTHERS WHEN THEY GET DOWN AND PLAYED THE BLUES!!!!
YES INDEED! RIP Duane - you will be forever missed
No guitar player grabbed me by the balls and made me pay close attention like Duane Allman..........
Bellísimo blues
OR when you want to go the other way - Whipping Post.
I have this album. It is a fantastic vinyl treat. Put your headphones on and just let this wash over you. It won’t be a wasted second I can assure you!!!
one of THE BEST blues songs I have ever heard
Damn !!! Great test slide guitarist ever !!!! Thanks Duane for this great Solo !!!
Very, very high level, this blues and this performance. These guys are great.
We lost a true Artist of music. RIP Greg Allman, you are going to be missed. The mix of Blue, Jazz, and Rock will forever be your claim to fame.
dicky betts n Duane allman pure lead guitars genious!!
without a doubt!
i can't say it enought the allman brothers are the greatest band ever
Certainly the best American band ever.
no matter how many times i listen to this recording i never seem to tire of it.
Thanks so much posting this!
you'll never find music like this again, i believe. they were incredible.
Yeah, the "soul factor" here is unbelievable. This song is just like a an incredibly heartful and skilfully woven cathederal of soul.
purpix1 good but not sure
the best ever. new them as The Second Coming Jax Florida 1968
Joe Somerville l pm
If I had a nickel for every time I listened to this song, I'd be a rich man.

LORD HAVE MERCY!!! This music still can move 40 years later...one of the best albums EVER!
I saw them in '93 at Coleman Colleseum for homecoming at the University of Alabama! Best concert ever!
fantastic music presented with the highest quality and perfection
Anyone who has ever suffered depression know the greatness of "Whipping Post'',
all 23 minutes.
this song, this is the best anyone's ever done of Stormy Monday. Every time I hear it it gives me chills and I start singing it like some ole man, some ole man missing his baby, but working hard and barely getting by, but he keeps trying.
Eva Cassidy did an exquisite rendition. Look it up.
The great Allman Brothers Band. All anybody has to say
Saw them in 1968. What a memorable night
sky dog
The ABB set the standard for this tune, Best version ever!!!!
Still gives me goosebumps to this day, its so damn good. i remember a long time ago i would listen to this with headphones, ALL the problems in the world would dissolve. RIP Gregg.
Saw them live twice in 1970, all the original members...all but one are gone now...their live music was the best ever. Fillmore East album is as good as it gets...RIP ALLMANS...
and this my friends is how god communicates with us
YOU NEVER KNOW FOR SURE, TILL " YOU FINALLY KNOW",& "THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY OUT THAT DOOR"& "THERE'S A MAN DOWN THERE WAITING FOR ME"{LIGHTEN UP, CAUSE "THAT MAN MAY JUST BE A " MARTIAN"{DOES HE PLAY LES PAUL OR JAZZMASTER GUITAR?}}LOL.,
yes, yes, yes!
How incoherent can you even get? Spelling? Wtf
Amen!
Goodbye, Gregg. Goodbye Allman Brothers Band. This is the only lineup I ever loved. There will never be another. And this song always bring me to tears.
I have 5,300 songs in my iTunes (mostly pre-Disco). Of these, 295 are versions of Allman Brothers' songs from the Duane Allman-era. Truly awesome.
Best version I have ever heard. Duane is gone but not forgotten. Thank God he left us his music. I believe you can come to know someone through their music and Duane and this song hold a special place in my heart.
Just so privileged to be a youngen listening to music like this. Thanks be to God!
I remember sitting in an old blues club in 1980 listening to a group called Mojo Filter cover this song. Their card said "sometimes the blues can make you feel so good" good times. Dwayne Almond is phenomenal!
