I got Silver on release when I was like 10 and if any other kid rented it from Blockbuster I would pitch them the idea of letting their pokemon live on in my game file
Who needs friends when you can just get another gameboy and the other version of the game? Lol. I know it would cost money, but I made money cutting lawns as a kid, so I was like, "Who needs friends for Pokemon?" :)
Steelix's move pool in later games, the physical special split, as well as the introduction of abilities, improved steelix drastically. I mean, to the point where I absolutely love using him. Gyro Ball, Heavy Slam, Double edge with Rock head, elemental fang moves, the list goes on.
Rocked a Steelix on my Sword ladder team for Trick Room and Sandstorm. Body Press, even being 80 power and non-STAB, is still scary coming off 250 DEF. Statakata and Aggron outclass it after the DLCs though

First, you diss my boy Stantler by calling him a forgotten pokemon, and now you're making cow puns?! you have made yourself a very minor and not at all threatening enemy this day! Denis
I feel like the result of this challenge is less of a case of “steelix bad” and more just about how these kind of solo in game run challenges heavily favor offensive mons over defensive ones. Steelix isn’t really meant to run through a gauntlet of mons and win the game on its own, it’s more of a defensive backbone, it’s meant to come in, wall things and force them out. The way scizor is designed is practically made for this sort of challenge especially in a region as easy as johto, it can just set up on whatever terrible mon the AI leads with and win lol. Steelix is pretty solid mon in the GSC comp format from my understanding, which makes sense it’s allowed to act more as a wall rather than a wincon, as well as be able to support teammates rather than be a one man army. Great video By the way but yeah I don’t think it’s as much steelix not being very good in this gen it’s more like this kind of challenge structure is like the antithesis to slow, fat defensive mons like steelix if that makes sense. Mons with either easy setup, good speed and offensive stats, huge movepools, or any combination of those things are generally gonna excel in this style of challenge. There are outliers and exceptions ofc for both sides but other than yeah that’s kinda my 2 cents on it lol Oh and almost forgot: Denis
I have a suggestion for a Gold/Silver/Crystal run: A race between Growlithe/Arcanine and Vulpix/Ninetales, but there's a caveat. You have to start with the pre-evolution and only use a fire stone to evolve them after they've learned all the level up moves they can learn as pre-evolutions. That said, Vulpix may have an advantage for a bit as you can evolve it once it's level 37, whereas, with Growlithe, you have to wait until level 50. If you don't do this, especially with Growlithe (but also Vulpix), you'll miss out on them learning some important moves. In the case of Vulpix, Fire Spin isn't that important, especially in Gen II, but we'll keep the rule the same so it doesn't get an almost 20 level evolution advantage over Growlithe. What's more, you have to acquire the fire stone via legitimate means, so you can't hack a fire stone in as a held item. Also, you can't use the move tutor in Goldenrod (Crystal version, on Wednesdays and Saturdays) to teach them Flamethrower as they learn that move naturally. I think Growlithe/Arcanine will win the race, but it will likely be closer than any other race you've done so far.
This would actually be a fantastic idea for a challenge! To be fair even a simple Ninetales vs Arcanine challenge would be great to watch, but yours adds all kinds of depth
Posting this before the premiere, so I'm not sure how it'll age, but here's my predictions: I can see Scizor being the victor, since it has 45 more base attack and 35 more speed, with the best defensive typing in the game, tied with Forretress and Quagsire on having only one weakness. I also see it struggling pretty hard against steel and ghost types, and coverage might matter more than just stats/typing, especially since they're only relevant in in-game playthroughs to a degree, so Steelix might have that edge. Scizor might be able to just muscle past any type disadvantages, though, especially with fury cutter, so I'm still leaning heavily towards Scizor. Not sure what their gen 2 learn sets are for moves, so it'll be interesting to see here. It really depends what ends up walling them or wasting time. I feel like Red's Blastoise might be pretty tricky for Steelix if it can't one-shot with something like earthquake, but stat experience throughout the run might beef Steelix up enough to either tank Blastoise or shred it. I'm gonna assume both starters will fight Meganium, so I don't see the rival giving much, if any trouble in this run.
Kingdra actually has really good typing too. Water/ground competes with it for amazing offensive potential but Water/Dragon has only a 2x weakness which it can also hit back for 2x damage.
You know what I like about your runs? You make inadvertent mistakes and show us them (i.e. wrong move selection, changing movesets, etc.). It really gives the feel of a "regular person" playing the game. And if we wanted to play at home, we can realistically compare times. Great video per usual!
Glad you're enjoying the videos! I think seeing the mistakes is so important. It makes the journey feel more real. After all, I'm not really here to scientifically prove which Pokemon is better.
It'd be interesting to see who'd have a better time in HG/SS: Heracross or Scizor as they both got major buffs since Gen 2 and were the best bugs of Gen 2
I think Scizor would win hands down. With Swords Dance and Technician-boosted Bullet Punch, Bug Bite, Metal Claw, Aerial Ace, etc, it would just mow stuff down left and right.
Correction, it only learns Bug Bite via the Battle Frontier move tutor, so that's not really an option, but X-Scissor will do. Its Pursuit is also boosted by Technician, so there's that.
@@paulnewton2284 I too think Scizor will win. Swords Dance and Bullet Punch alone should carry it far. But I wouldnt really go with X-Scissor or any Bug moves, as Bug isint a super useful type. So I'd go with Pursuit and then a 4th coverage move to handle Fire types, since Fire resists Steel and Scizor is 4x weak to fire so setting up with Swords Dance isint an option
So something interesting about scyther and scizor, they have the same base stat total. Scyther has higher speed while scizor has higher defenses and attack. Kleavor is like this too.
WOW!!! This guy is great at the game. He really has a good thought process around the game and he puts together really intelligently done videos. The data and the methodology and stuff is rigorous and we trust his results.
Of course scizor no doubt. There's no powerful fire type mon until the elite 4 and, depending on hidden power, scizor can have some great coverage and set up potential. Steelix's best set up option is rest talk curse iron tail honestly since roar is useless without set up. The two mon with some of the most lack luster movesets for their stats lol
Silver/Gold is to this day my favourite gen in pokemon. It was such a big upgrade from red/blue in every way and in my opinion no other gen achieved this much compared to its predecessor. The wierd thing is, although i started playing again in the 5 th gen and played every new game to this day, the pokemon from the 2nd gen still feel new and out of the ordinary to me.
When I was a kid I would always wait until after the 4th gym when I could go to Mahogany town and get the TM for thief, then battle magnemites until you get the metal coat. Takes a lot less time since you don't have to catch them.

Wings may fool you (beedrill and volbeat/illumise have wings but they are not flying I think) but, Gym leaders are experts in what they do. I mean, Sabrina it's the strongest one. Thanks for the kind words! I do really love these games and I'm incredibly grateful to have a small platform to share that with others now. I'll keep creating and keep learning!
Steelix was the biggest hype ever as a kid when gold & silver was released. the Gameboy advanced was so awesome to play the games on because of the built in lights to the screen unlike the prior Gameboy that were so hard to see the screen unless you were underneath a lamb or had the little attachment light for the Gameboy, good times growing up surprisingly at my grandparents as well I love you're stories they remind me a lot of my own childhood. keep the work up bud.
When I first saw Scizor I was amazed, it was so cool but, I never EVER, well once, evolved Scyther into Scizor though. 1) Metal Coat was obtained too late and never traded with myself because I would get Metal Coat at the S.S Aqua. Looking up now I see that you can obtain a metal coat from a wild Magnemite at massive 2% chance. So the first time I would ever get it is at the S.S Aqua. So by that time the game is basically over for me, my team was trained and I was heading for all 8 gyms with the team I had been working with since I beat the Elite 4. Steelix and Scizor being trade evolution was a huge let down as I never liked them in the first gen too.
In Germany we had our own version of 'Rattatatta'. The German name for Ratatta is 'Rattfratz' which often got mangled to 'Ratzfratz' because it would merge with the term 'ratzfatz' which is a colloquialism meaning 'really fast'. Also, rewatching bug love c:
Saludos amigo!, Wow you added the time next to the pokemon sprite in the tier list. it's just me or the backsprite of stealix looks like it have an "evil moustache". btw That "so close" on steelix speed it made my day :) pd,Thanks Denis.
23:45 you were struggling with the magnemite paralysis. Were you banning held items? Because a Paralysis cure berry to set up swords dance would have done the job for you I think.
Holy crap, this strategy with Steelix to defeat Red is pure madness XD And to think I was able able to defeat Red in Crystal with level 79-80 Feraligatr with only medium difficulty. It seems some Pokemon really struggle with having to carry an entire run depending on how many weaknesses they have, and I think most importantly, if their move pools allow them to set up to sweep and deal good damage against a wide variety of enemy types. And Steelix in Gen 2 is lacking in all three regards. I imagine this would have been much harder if not impossible if Red had a Lapras here instead of Espeon lol.
I'm pretty sure that pokehex can be used to manually change save file so instead of reseting until you get 'decent' pokemon you can just directly add a pokemon to your team and set its IV whatever you want
Share a hydration moment with our bro Denis. (I hope these comments are not annoying for you Scott, I just want to help boost your chances at pleasing the youtube gods by leaving comments and being slightly wholesome and memey.) Also, you're one of the few UA-camrs that I've rang that bell for.
oooh when you do decide to start doing gen 3 videos I would LOVE to see runs with breloom, torkoal, and spinda (not necessarily against each other lol they don’t have much in common - they’re just some of my favorites)
I wonder if it would’ve been faster to replace bind with mudslap instead of screech, then setup screeches on Miltank instead of chipping it down. Good race, glad I was able to catch this (bit late!!)
I remember the very first time I had a Scizor as a kid (which was an accomplishment since saving up for a link cable took a while) my Scyther was so high-level that I just never got a Steel type move. That was kinda funny even as a kid, but man, I was happy to have one. Steelix, I never had. Also, glad to see the Fury Cutter Miltank cheese. I figured that one out all on my own and was so proud when I did. And it feels so good everytime. My first time, I did with Beedrill, but it works so well regardless of the user.
Ofc you can't find bellsprouts in Bellsprout Tower... it's a tower... not a garden, nor a patch of grass... it's called like that cause it swings like one... and it's near to the place where you can find them... pretty straightforward imo...
That would be pretty awesome! Or Scizor getting Hidden Power bug! It's type is determined with DVs in this generation though, so it might actually be possible to narrow the odds by reseting at the start.
"Ring the Chimeco". Now that's a catchphrase! I really like your Vs videos. Have you ever thought about making a Pinsir vs Heracross in GSC? Originally, I believe Heracross was planned to be an evolution of Pinsir (see the beta designs for Gen II). And they are kind of counterparts: Bugs that use fighting moves...
The fury cutter, 2x swords dance, and then return looked like you were trying to stall out the sun to me (and if it wasn't, you should just say it was - the world needs never know)
Scott you should do an updated version of this video since you've learned alot since this video and would probably be able to get a much better time for both 😊
Regarding the gen3 races I have an interesting idea Sharpedo vs Camerupt! Trench and Caldera are really cool theme names that have the same amount of characters for the text frames. Also: *”Fossil Fight 2: Cradily vs Armaldo”*
As a Bug Trainer with a Scizor and Volcarona as the core of my pokemon team, I am very happy to see that even back in Gen 2, Scizor is able to put this slow steel snake thing into the dirt where it belongs. Scizor is one of the all time great pokemon. It's had a competitive career and been on world championship teams. It was almost unfair to even think Steelix could compete.
15:40 actually, Metal Claw would have been a worse choice, as both steel and electric resist steel, so even if you got the attack buff, it would have dealt less damage.
Cow are you supposed to cheese milktank without the right moooves? I always liked the idea of both of these, but had no way to trade, so young me didn't get to use them.
Gen 1 critical hit rate isn't a bug, *it's a feature.* Now yeah, Focus Energy and Dire Hit are bugged, but faster pokemon are _supposed_ to crit more often in gen 1 lol. Honestly it's a change I really dislike about Gen 2. Splitting Special was good, giving more threats to psychic was good, but nerfing speed was so sad
Cool that you spent days looking for a metal coat, that's some dedication... But, like, thief my guy. It's your best friend in this case and how I got my Scizor before chuck.
in the gen 2 games everyone complains how low level the rocket plotline is and how easy it is, but you can initiate it as soon as you beat whitney and enter the middle game. Everyone just beats morty chuck and jasmine before they go toward price, but its kinda lame to do it that way. Price gives you the sp at boost and im always using special attackers so i prioritze him over the other 3 gyms, plus i always have fire and electric types making him easy. Team rocket is a nice training coming with lv 15 to 20 mons barely surviving wild encounters to the red gyrados. This way is more fun for me,

15:40 metal claw is x1/4 resisted by magnemite and not only 95% accurate so I think headbutt, with the 30% flinch, was better.
Saludos amigo!, Wow you added the time next to the pokemon sprite in the tier list.
it's just me or the backsprite of stealix looks like it have an "evil moustache".
btw That "so close" on steelix speed it made my day :)
pd,Thanks Denis.
Glad the so close made your day :)
Would love to see a repeat of this battle in Gen IV after the physical-special split with the methodology of your newer videos.
Love these race playthroughs
I loved in the Blue fight when you said Arcanine outspeeds because of course it does 😂
I love your challenge videos so much Scott!!! thanks for all your hard work all the time!!!!!
You're welcome
in the anime later generations they say slowpoke tails fall off and grow back. so teriyaki might be good
Is the tail still edible if it just falls off?
I'd love to see a race between the gen 2 eeveelutions (Espeon and Umbreon)
Denis is the true MVP
Also, first video of yours I've seen. Great content you got here. Gonna binge all of them now.
Be prepared for the older stuff! I've learned a lot since then haha
Fantastic idea for a run all eveelutions from gen 1 and 2
Denis
How did i not find this channel before. Amazing idea to do versus runs like this with similar pokemon.
At least you're here now :)
23:45 you were struggling with the magnemite paralysis. Were you banning held items? Because a Paralysis cure berry to set up swords dance would have done the job for you I think.
Dude I loved your miltank puns lmao
Holy crap, this strategy with Steelix to defeat Red is pure madness XD
And to think I was able able to defeat Red in Crystal with level 79-80 Feraligatr with only medium difficulty.
Yeah, there are lots of other ways too!
I know these vs videos take forever to make, but for gen 2. Royal Rumble would be a great idea, Kingdra vs Slowking
Whichever patron took bellsprout and has the name "Nice ;)", you are my hero.
Man that end with steelix vs snorlax was intense!!
“Bovine Brawl” lol I’ve been wanting to see a vs of miltank and tauros, can’t wait
Denis
Great video! If you're on a Gen 2 kick, Espeon vs. Umbreon would be nice to see.
Also, Denis.
Yeah, I intend to do that one. Back to Kanto in the next video though. Variety!
oooh when you do decide to start doing gen 3 videos I would LOVE to see runs with breloom, torkoal, and spinda (not necessarily against each other lol they don’t have much in common - they’re just some of my favorites)
What about Skarmory? How would the Blade-Winged Bird stack up against Scizor and Steelix's performances?
I wonder if it would’ve been faster to replace bind with mudslap instead of screech, then setup screeches on Miltank instead of chipping it down.
Good race, glad I was able to catch this (bit late!!)
Yeah, that's a good idea. I just didn't realy think either of those moves was important. I'll keep this sort of thing in mind for the future!
Love these Versus vids!
Another coming next weekend ;)
It also makes things fair if you do that fight since you can't skip it in Pokemon Crystal if I remember correctly.
19:27 Steelix's other STAB steel move is Hidden Power Steel, but it's a luck based crapshoot whether or not you get it....
That would be pretty awesome! Or Scizor getting Hidden Power bug! It's type is determined with DVs in this generation though, so it might actually be possible to narrow the odds by reseting at the start.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon True, but it'll still take a lot of time to get the proper hidden power type and getting it at 50 or more power.
Cool idea. I do want to do Heracross again.
Woo hoo i love listening to these while at work
The fury cutter, 2x swords dance, and then return looked like you were trying to stall out the sun to me (and if it wasn't, you should just say it was - the world needs never know)
Totally what I was trying to do! Couldn’t figure it out in post haha
Scott you should do an updated version of this video since you've learned alot since this video and would probably be able to get a much better time for both 😊
I’m going to pair both of them with other Pokémon this time around. Scizor soon.
Any chance to know when the miltank vs tauros is coming out?
What’s your ideal Butterfree? Also what moves would you give it? My best butterfree has aerial ace, psychic, giga drain and silver wind
Denis's tears can cure cancer, but Denis is too much of a man to ever cry.
Regarding the gen3 races I have an interesting idea
Sharpedo vs Camerupt!
Denis
15:40 actually, Metal Claw would have been a worse choice, as both steel and electric resist steel, so even if you got the attack buff, it would have dealt less damage.
Cow are you supposed to cheese milktank without the right moooves?
I always liked the idea of both of these, but had no way to trade, so young me didn't get to use them.
Dude I would love to see this comparison with scizor and scyther
When you were milking those cow puns I thought "That wasn't very mature 🤔 How dairy!"
Did you test scizor’s hidden power? Could have helped against jasmine.
Gen 1 critical hit rate isn't a bug, *it's a feature.*
Now yeah, Focus Energy and Dire Hit are bugged, but faster pokemon are _supposed_ to crit more often in gen 1 lol.
Seeing steelix I remember my torkoal with quick claw , which messed up my friends baton pass strat
I'm VERY glad I'm not the only one who pronounced Rattata as "Rat-a-tat-a" as a kid-- XD
in the gen 2 games everyone complains how low level the rocket plotline is and how easy it is, but you can initiate it as soon as you beat whitney and enter the middle game.
