      Thank you so much for your sweet note, Bre!🥰 That’s a wonderful background and I’m certain that your background in anthro + medical research will bring extremely powerful skillsets as a UX Researcher. Getting my foot into the UXR door wasn’t the easiest, but at the end of the day, it’s all sooooo worth the journey. Thank you for this sneak peak into the UX rseracher daily life! I've recently discovered this field and now I'm trying to consider the possibility of the transition from the academic research on disability rights and academic writing coaching. I'm interested in accessibility, diversity and inclusion in the UX. The thing is that I'm interested in reseach specifically, whereas the design part doesn't seem interesting for me and I'm ablsolutely horrible at anything that requires a sense of eastetic. Hence, I'm confused whether I have any perspectives in the UX with my background. Thanks again for your wonderful content!

      You don't need to have a design background to be a UX researcher, actually, you will be working mainly with people and documenting your findings in a lot of Google Sheets/Excel files, word documents, .ppts, even doing literary research on academic articles, etc. A lot of youturbers mix UI (User Interface) with UX so don't get discouraged, anyone can be a UXer, no matter their background. For accesibility standards you might already know this, but a great place to start is searching for WCAG22 (Web Content Accesibility Guidelines 2.2). Best wishes on your UX path!

    • @shalomshal2366

      Hiya I've seen us research in the gov space you'd be suited for that accessibility and inclusion is key there and a lot of jobs are in that space. You need to work with designers and not be aesthetic but having clean basic design principles and skills to create good slides and reference design components is useful.

      Hi Paris! Thanks for watching and great question. I personally started my career pivot with the General Assembly course (I have a video specifically on this in my channel) but I recommend starting by looking into free courses online without committing too much $$$ into bootcamp courses. If you want formal education, a master’s program will be helpful. However, if you’re willing to start somewhere humble and learn on the job, one way is to start in a Research Operations role and getting exposure while networking with internal UXR team and getting more resources. A lot of the times, large companies have their own UXR handbook, templates, and resources, which I found super helpful myself!

    Hey there, I currently work in customer insight but love the idea of being a UX Researcher. I was considering doing a course on Career foundry because they offer a job guarantee but I am not so much interested in UX design ie doing wireframes etc but I am very interested in doing user research.. do you have any recommendations on where is the best place to study UX research and do you think its best for a UX researcher to know the entire UX design process or does it not really matter ? Thanks in advance.

    • @Tifffster
      @Tifffster  2 роки тому +7

      Hi there!👋😀 Welcome to my channel and great questions!
      It’s super important to *understand* the entire UX design process, but you’re not expected to actually design as a UX researcher. Before you commit to a specific route (or even committing to expensive courses), I highly recommend that you start somewhere really small to try to determine if this is the right route for you - day in the life vids on UA-cam are great (and you’re doing this already!), there’s also free videos on UA-cam on the overall process of UX and where UX Researcher comes into play.
      Start learning super fundamental/widely-used research methods such as interviews, contextual inquiry, survey, etc. by simply searching on Google and reading thru real world UX examples of each. And learn how the overall research process, challenges, and real world application work. The important part is to learn how to ask the right questions to users. With each method you’ve learned, try to practice it out with fake projects.
      Also, highly recommend looking up “UX Researcher” on LinkedIn and see if you have any 1st or 2nd connections, and reach out to see if they’d be willing to share about their experience! With my YT channel, I’m trying to help share my experience with broader audience, but if you know of some personal connections, you might be able to get some personal tips & tricks too :)
      I want to provide more helpful resources for those who have interest in pivoting into UXR, so stay tuned on my channel! Let me know if you have other questions. Best of luck! 🍀

      @@Tifffster Thanks so much for the reply. There is quite a lot I do in customer Insight that overlaps with UX research for instance I routinely do quant and qual surveys, empathy mapping, A/B testing , route cause analysis , persona building and customer journey mapping. Do you think these skills would enable me to apply for UX roles once I understand the process as you've explained to research above ?. Again many thanks for your help it is much appreciated.

    • @Tifffster
      @Tifffster  2 роки тому

      @lol - Ahhhh that's awesome! I come from a similar background being in marketing analytics, and let me tell you - those are extremely powerful and highly sought after skillsets in getting into UXR.
      A couple of things you can do right off the bat - 1) like I mentioned in my previous comment, learn the UX process on your own via online resources, 2) you'll most likely need to put together a couple of case studies to demonstrate your research process, thought process, understanding of methods, etc. as it is asked by most employers. You can even use your past + current experience to demonstrate the research process, thought process, and end results of your past customer insight research.
      Hope that helps! I'm also going to put together a video on how to create a case study together. Stay tuned! 😊

    Hi! Thanks for this video, it was very informative. I have a question: do you or other researchers have to recruit their own participants for the study / interview? How does that process go? If it’s too much to answer in the contents, I can DM you thanks!

    • @Tifffster
      @Tifffster  3 місяці тому

      Hi! You're so welcome. If you're asking about the actual task of recruiting, YES! If you're in a small company, you have the responsibility of doing research operations too. So you do everything from sending out recruitment reachouts, screening them, managing participants, scheduling them, etc. Now, if you work in larger companies like Google, they'll likely have someone doing research operations specifically. In that case, you tell the operations team who you're hoping to recruit and the criteria, and they'll take care of screening/scheduling/etc.
      If asking about the act of recruiting - you're working in a company, they'll hopefully have a system in place where you use a recruiting panel website/agency to recruit participants. So you may use those external recruiting websites to recruit. OR you can also have your own research panel. You may also just recruit from your users.
      Does this help?

Love your content and enjoyed understanding your everyday life as a UX Researcher! 🤩🤩 I am myself in this field too and been looking to see what you could recommend in terms of the laptop. As a UX Researcher I wonder if you would recommend to have a 14inch or 16inch laptop to work on when doing a daily tasks, such as conducting or analysing the research? 🌻

      @Tifffster  Рік тому +2

      Hi Indre! Nice meeting you and thanks for your kind words! Love hearing that you enjoyed the video🥰 I’ve used both 14in + 16in but oh gosh 16in makes SUCH a difference! Currently on a Macbook Pro 16inch, and while it’s extremely heavy, the monitor makes multi-screen work that we always have so much easier! BTW I also have a second monitor - which, honestly the bigger the better!😆

      @@Tifffster Thanks a lot for the info and your quick response! Much appreciated and it is super helpful!! Yeah, I see that the 16 inch would be so much more comfortable in terms of the screen size, however I also see that the current Macbook Pro 16inch 2023 are sooo heavy. I wonder, does it not put you off to carry around a 16inch one? and in terms of the typing experience, since we type a lot as a ux researchers: is 14 inch or 16 inch more comfortable to type? 🌻🌻

      Hello!👋☺️That’s awesome! If you completed your masters degree in Sociology and have a pretty good knowledge of research methods, you should only need to learn some basic understanding of UX process and where UXR takes into place before you can jump in. Otherwise, you’d need to put together a portfolio with case study/real world project presenting your research process + thought process. I’m working to put together resources to self learn basics of that. Stay tuned!🤗☺️
