- Hello friends! In this video I'm showing you a realistic day in the life as a UX/UI designer. I walk you through what it's actually like to be a UX designer at small-medium sized company. I'm showing the meetings I'm in with product managers and developers, the tools like Figma & FigJam that I use to create workflows in order to complete my UX design tasks.

This might be the most helpful video I've ever seen for someone looking to become a UX designer
Yes!!! So happy to see a black woman UX designer! I'm about to graduate from general assembly from my 6 month UX course and I'm excited! You have a new subscriber, I'm loving to see another black woman in the field.
Thank you! Yes, we have to stick together. Congrats on almost completing your course 🎉
Mee too like I was looking for a video of a black person in the UX design field
Sis! How do you feel about your program? Is/Was it good? Did you graduate yet?
Do you feel it was worth it? I need the details lol - I’m highly considering that program for UX Design.
@@MPllll. Hey girl! I really enjoyed my program! I graduated last December and I highly recommend it. I feel that it prepared me well for the industry and I felt confident in the skills I gained.
@ALEX LEE there's always somebody....what" what?? Damn! 🙄
I've been doing Front-End development for the past six years, and in many roles, there was an attempt to incorporate UX design into developers' responsibilities. However, it always felt rushed until they hired a dedicated UX Designer, who brought a much deeper sense of user interface and experience design and conventions.
That's a really good video. Maybe you can turn this into a series, by for example showing different types of typical UX tasks, like fixing issues together with devs or doing user research / testing or how you map out new features. I'm sure that many people who don't work UX but are interested in it might find this helpful, since a lot of material related to the topic is rather static. You on the other hand want to emphasise everyday workflows.
Thank you for watching and that is a great idea!
this one
Talk about divine timing. Thank you for sharing this! I’m 3 months into a UX design certification program and I’m excited to get into the field.
Have you finished your certificate? Was it through coursera? Have you found a job you like? Would love to know!
Update!? Please! Would love to know too
Did you finish the course and did you get a job?
Did you end up getting a job in the field? Would love to know.
The answer is no
Glad I found you!! I use to search soo hard for black UX Designers before I got into the field!! Our day seems to be the same lol
Thank you girl!
Hey Steph, new subbie. I really love how you actually explain some of what your tasks are as an ux designer and don't just gloss over it like other UA-cam. Also, your videos are so concise and informative!
Ah thank you so much! You are too kind, thank you for watching ☺️❤️
Yes I concur 👍 love the details and explanations.
This! Seriously, great video for getting a better sense of the type of work flow and expectations. I am transitioning from a job where I get paid very little for doing so much / also do not have a degree. The anxiety I have had to perform in this potential new role is through the roof! This helped a lot! Thank you for taking the time to create/share this Stephanie! :)
I’m taking a certification course in this and this video is so helpful and inspiring for me right now 🥰✨
This was extremely helpful to watch! I'm currently career changing and found out about UX/UI design and careers and finding someone who does "day in the life" work, where they show actual work being done is so difficult. This made me more excited to be doing the work to get there. Thank you so much!
im in uni studying to be a ux designer and i really wanted to see how my future faily life would be, so this vid is very heppful, esp as a fellow black girl!! thank youuuuu 🩷🫶🏾
Love this! So realistic
Also I appreciate the way you break down each tasks into bits
Thank you Feeza! ❤️
Hi Steph! Been following you from day 1, loved your videos! I'm also studying UX Design (on top of my full time job in HR - trying to switch career) 😍
Hey Noams! That is awesome; I know hard it is to work & study but so worth it in the end!
Where are you studying please
We are in the same boat. I currently work as a Sr. HR Rep, and am looking to break into UX UI Design and change career paths completely. I just started my google course.
I so appreciate you showing an actual day in the life that is useful for us😘. So many of these videos are just the person in meetings and snacking. Which is fine if that is what’s happening in the day of recording but edit and show a day when you are doing some design too with the design tool you’re using.
Aw thank you! 😊I try to show at least one design related task that I do.
I loved this! You actually showed what you were doing. It's hard to find that on youtube where people SHOW what they're doing (I understand because of privacy) but this was so refreshing to watch. Also, I love your dog. The cutest thing! Subscribed :)
Thank you so much, you are too kind ☺️
Great to watch this. I just had my first UX designer role and I felt lost, but this actually gives me a better idea of what one works on on a more concrete, granular level. And classic dog shenanigan at the end, lol.
I am so happy to see a black woman working as a UX Designer. ❤️
Loved this from beginning to end, this is EXACTLY what i needed to see what I'd potentially be getting into when i get ready to start my UX courses, thanks.
Thank you! That is a wonderful compliment, I'm glad this helped!
Off-topic but what foundation are you wearing? Flawless skin!
Thank you! It's Clinique Even Better Foundation
Sub 438, Like 223! I'm learning UX and appreciate you and folks like yourself giving perspective on this new world, keep up the great work!
Thank you!!
Thank you for this video! I am considering getting this certificate. Do you know if UX has part time remote jobs? Or is mostly full time positions?
There are jobs most full time, part time and contract!
Hello! I’m currently in school for UX/UI and I’m so excited to see this video and how you explain what you’re doing and why. New subscriber!
I’m trying to transition into Ux design. I’m working as a medical records specialist and it isn’t for me. Im glad to see more black women in tech and Ux design. You definitely have a new follower. 😊
Thank you! So happy to have you 💕
Hi Steph! loved your video and ofc the lovely puppie, my heart just melted. This week I'm beginning with my UX/UI (yet to define) journey, so If u can send any advice to beginners it would mean a lot! Greetings from Chile.
Hi Pau 💕 Good luck on your journey. My advice is to take notes and take it slow. There’s a lot to learn so pace yourself!
This was really helpful! I love your journey mapping concept, is there a template you could share for that?. Im currently in an UX/UI Bootcamp and I love it! I hope you keep creating content!
Aw thank you ☺️ that is so kind. Let me see if I can get a template together.
@@hellostephaniem Thank you!
You're really pretty
Hello! Is Google certificate ok?
Yes! A coworker of mine went through Google’s course and enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing this! I’m in the process of deciding which lane i want to jump into with UX design. You make it look worth the jump! Definitely subscribing
Aw thank you for the sub! I'm glad this was helpful
Hey, this is great to see. I'm graduating with my Interaction Design Degree from KSU on May 10th 2023 and it's always good to see what our job truly consist of considering most ppl still don't know what it is that we do.
Just starting my certificate and im SO glad a woman of color popped up in my search! New subbie
Thanks for subbing!
Where did you learn and do you feel fulfilled in your job? I need a new career change but also a remote job for my family.
So cool!!
Hey! I know that all companies are different, but for each task do you feel like your company gives you enough time to complete everything? Like for the journey mapping exercise, how long would you say you worked on that?
Hey Steph, hope you're doing well? I'm thinking about a career change and to pursue the UX design. What are your thoughts about it ?
So glad to see representation in this field! New sub here! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the sub!
Thank you so much for creating this. I have thinking about going into the UX Design field and it is great to see a black woman in it like myself, so that way it gives me better insight in choosing this path possibly for myself.
I thought about getting into this field but when I go on indeed and look for Jobs near me there are no jobs available.I'd have to go downtown. I know I shouldn't make excuses and let that hold me back But I always find a reason to not further my education 😢
Great video! I loved seeing the tasks as well. I am so nervous to take that leap and leave my stable (but draining and consuming) job. This helped give me more clarity! I also love that you can be home all day with your pup. ❤💐
i'm on break at my job right now, and i want to say this is quite interesting, never knew this is how a UX designer lives until now
edit: i subscribed ^^
thank you so much for actually showing some of your UX process, it great for some of us that are learning
I’m considering studying this next year 😅
I'm starting classes for my Comp Sci degree and UX Designer is one career I'm looking into. Thanks for the video lots of useful info. Would you say it was difficult finding a job in this field tho?
It took me a while, but everyone's timing is different so be prepared!
Thank you for this video! I’m transitioning into tech and have been more so interested in UX so this helped a lot! Thank you!
Of course! I’m glad it helped 😊❤️
Thank you so much for this video. I'm looking into becoming UX/UI designer. New sub! 🙌🏾
You are a fantastic presenter! Very interesting video, thank you! Your dog is adorable too haha
Thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing. It only seemed like a couple of hours work. How many hours do you work each day? Do you have to constantly have meetings and do presentations or do you get a good amount of time to work quietly without input from others?
I would say half of my day is full of meetings and the over half is actually executing the work. So it’s a good balance of meeting & presentations vs focus design time.
Hi!! Thanks a lot for sharing this. Ive been contemplating a qualification in this field. Can you recommend a good program to take please?
Yes, definitely! I recommend Springboard, the link is in the description of the video to get some money off. Good luck!
do you enjoy your job? is it Stressful?
I love it! But it is stressful to always put out good work. It takes time, but it's worth it, if you love the work you do.
what software is the one you are using here? Thanks!!
Hi 👋🏽 Its FigJam!
Can you put me through a step by step method of learning ui/ux design
i really want to do this and learn it im in school right now for computer science
Do you feel like going to coding boot camp or using Google certification would be good for me just starting out? Also glad to see a beautiful black lady in Tech!!
Yes, bootcamps all the way!
Thanks for sharing Steph. Hello Pope!
Hi Steph. You've got a new subscriber.
Please can one possibly just be a UX designer without being a UI designer?
Hey Janet! Yes you can be just a UX designer. You would focus more on process, design flows, understanding user behavior etc.
Where do you live in ? USA?
Hi Stephanie I’m starting my bootcamp next month my job has an opening but program for ux/ui designers with entry level experience I’m hoping to secure the entry into the job/program before I finish bootcamp the recruiter said as long as I finish before program starts 🎉 so hopefully I get in soon I work for the company already any advice for if I apply without a portfolio I don’t think I’ll have enough work before application deadline which is January
Hi! I think if you had even one project to show, that would go a long way. We as designers are visual people. So even if it’s something small like, redesigning an app you love, that will help convey your design process. You’ve got this though! Good luck 🍀🎉
I loved this video! :)
So inspiring and informative
as a newbie in design with no work experience, please where can I learn to design experience maps or is it something I can learn only from getting a job?
most of the practical information I’ve come across on the internet pertain to visual and interaction design.
Just answered in my latest video!
thanks a lot. I'll check it out@@hellostephaniem
Thank you for the wonderful video! Are you worried about AI replacing UX Design?
What is your income?
are you a Jr or Senior UX?
Hi Steph! New subscriber here. What are your thoughts on going from requirements management/human factors to UX/UI? I’ve been doing both for about 2 years and it’s not really what I want to build a career on. I’m considering UX/UI
I don't know much about that career but it sounds like you have a good understanding of people/empathy; both are essential skills for a designer. Good luck!
Beyond Expectations, Look for UX UI Pros, They Revolutionized My Approach to User Testing and Design Decision Confidence
Love to see it. In school now and looking forward to getting into the field. Thank you for sharing.
Best of luck!
Watching this is giving me such motivation I went from me. Interior decorater to now finishing up my google UX course love to see another black women in the field!!
I really liked how you focused on tasks, insights, pain points and evidence. Especially the pain points seem really important, especially considering they are 'human pain points', and I personally experience as a developer that it's easy to rush over this and just think in terms of functionality.
Thanks I'm looking to move on an UX design is calling me more than business/data analyst roles, I'm dsylexic so report writing scares me.
Hi, How would you define a problem statement when a company says, they just want a redesign to freshen things up. They don’t know if there is a problem or not but that’s the brief.
I would ask a few more questions to find the root of the redesign. Is it hard to navigate? Is the UI not conveying trust to the customer? Are there accessibility issues? Is the website holding us back against our competitors? Even if they want a fresh look, there is a reason behind it. Hope this helps!
@@hellostephaniem thank you. I am writing my first case study. Also have you ever come across a site where there were more problems you found that the client had no idea about and midway through the project had to solve other problems and creating a whole new problem statement.
i'm a ux designer " a new ux designer " it's been 4-5 months im not getting the job. Also My resume is also getting rejected , please I need a internship in 2023 at least.
Hello! It's so competitive out there right now. I would look at freelance or contract jobs as well, even graphic design, you want to be open to anything.
@@hellostephaniem i can do graphic designs but i use scratch (coding site), turbowarp (scratch but better) or whatever i can use to make vector art
BLACK QUEENNNNN
Love this! I’ve just been accepted into a cohort for ux/ui so excited!!
Yay! Good luck, you got this!
just a question, can I become a U/X designer with a digital marketing degree?
Super informative! Subbed.
Thanks for the sub!
Thank you so much for the small insight on what it's like UI/UX design. i'm going back to school to become one and your videos are helping a lot. i look forward to the journey.
Also please pet your dog for me.
Hi! Do you have any suggestions for people going into UX? Like any advice?
Hey girlie! I have been researching about UX/UI programs. Do you have some insights on affordability of springboard? Is there a specific financial plan that worked best for you?
Hey girl! It has gotten more expense but they do have 4 different ways to pay for it. You can pay upfront, month to month, deferred tuition or a loan. I went with the deferred tuition plan; it’s definitely a expense but think of it as an investment into yourself and career ❤️
@@hellostephaniem thank you so much. I had a call with them the other day and I was thinking of going through with the deferred method too.
@@bri7193 Definitely, it was just the most cost effective for me!
Hi this is really great. Where did you get this template for the journey map?
Excellent video! Really gave me insight & even tips for my new ui/ux career. Thank you!
So informative thanks 😊
What template on Figma do you use to get your affinity layout like that?
I made my own!
Okay, thank you
What's the name of the tool for the journey map please?
FigJam!
@@hellostephaniem Thank you!
Hi! I'm wanting to take the Google cert for ux design! I was just wondering your journey into ux and steps you took to get your job? Most job postings I see want years of experience
Hi! After completing my bootcamp I applied to tons of jobs. If it was 3yrs of experience or less I was applying for it. Companies that are flexible on the experience will want to meet you depending on your skills and quality for portfolio. There is a video on my channel that goes into how I became a designer! Good luck ❤️
@@hellostephaniem Your videos have been inspiring. I want to do a career change but I am unsure of which program/boot camp to take in order to become a UX designer. Would you be able to provide some guidance or suggestions. Thanks so much!
@@DrP913 I did Springboard for my bootcamp, there is more info in the description box. I hope it helps you!
Hi thank you really interesting to watch and a great idea of what UX Designers do. I really wanna get started and this is what I needed. Aside, I love the decor of you place and cute dog.
hello! how did you get started in UX design?
I went through a bootcamp!
@@hellostephaniem You have a new sub! Which boot camp did you attend?
Hi! I’m planning on majoring in Information Systems with interface design track. I’m really interested in UX design! Do you think this major will set me up for a career in UX?
Absolutely! That skill set will set you apart from other entry level designers
You got montey shopping at Whole Foods 🎉❤😮💨 love this video so insightful I’m thinking about going on a ux design journey
New sub ❤
Im a new subscriber. ❤ im a little intimidated with the sketching aspect of this job. Do you have tips on how to navigate with no Arts background?
Just posted a video answering this!
I loved this video. Trying to figure out my next move and thought I had ruled UX Design out but this video is making me want to give it a second thought because the interest has always been there for the last 4-5 years.
Working as a UX designer, do you have to look at screen for 8 hours a day? I want to protect my eyesight and I don't think this work complements my lifestyle
Hey! I make sure to take breaks and I wear blue light glasses, but it is a lot of screen time
Hey, you are so beautiful ❤😍
太棒了,学习了
In trying to be a ux designer also but getting my graphic design certificate and certificate for UX design from google. Is ur position hourly? You did say its a small company. So you would do alot or a decent amount of leg work daily.
Hey! I am salaried and our UX team is small but the company is mid-size.
Just starting college and aiming for this type of career, new subbie here! You're gonna be my fave to watch about UX design.
Welcome aboard!
Thanks for sharing it. I would love to see more!🤩
love this! thank you so much for sharing your day with us
hello 👋
Hello!
Am glad I found your channel. Can you please tell me where you got that coffee table @1:51
Thank you! And it’s from Wayfair ✨
@@hellostephaniem can you post the product description?
How about we applaud her for being a hard worker and being able to get into a great career at a young age, instead of praising her for being black and being in tech. Are y’all implying black people are stupid and usually can’t get tech jobs? I’ve been in tech for 15 years a and can guarantee you I’ve never met a single racist hiring manager, just a lack of black applicants since #1 they are a minority and #2 many affluent blacks tend to go into finance, law, and med fields based on what I’ve seen in my own social circle.
How about both
Where did you learn to become a ux designer
Hi Kay! Springboard was the bootcamp I went through. There is a link the description 😊
Great Video
