actually you can make your friends account your "favorite" and only scroll through the "favorite" section on instagram. you can also click on the "following" section and only scroll through posts of account you follow. besides idk if you were talking about those random recommended posts that show on your front page of accounts you dont follow, but if you were, you can click on the 3 dots and deactivate that feature for a month. hope that helped :)

The problem is a lot of us do our work with phones, and then when we’re done with our work on our phones, we rely on it for socialization to keep in touch with friends and family. I think just by trying to leave it in the other room rather than in your pocket when you’re not in work or social mode at least will cut your phone time down enough to where you won’t be so addicted to be mindlessly checking it 24/7.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 4 and I agree when I got my iPad when I was younger it made it so much worse. It’s all about being over stimulated and all the bright colours on the screen gave me serotonin so when it got taken away I would freakkkkk out because all my “happiness” was gone.

You are so awesome and you have helped me out so much. Loved this video. I would love to see you with a special person in your life. Hard to believe you are single!!
I faced my phone addiction head-on without planning to. About a month ago, my phone broke, and then I shelled out my entire paycheck for a new iPhone 12, only for it to be stolen. At first, I was furious and felt like I could not get anything done without it. I eventually got my old phone to work again, but this time, I decided to see what would happen if I decided not to re-download my social media apps. It's only been about a week, but I have already felt a massive difference in my productivity, social life, and mental health. I am honestly so grateful that I had all of those issues with my phone. It took not having any phone at all to realize that I can survive and thrive without constantly checking my phone all day. And on top of that, I also realized that I was never happier with the newest phone, it was pretty and shiny, but it is just a phone.
Not gonna lie, when i broke my watch half a year ago, i wasn’t wearing a watch for a couple months. I constantly found myself picking up my phone to check the time and ending up in an app or doing something on it. You seriously should get a watch if you want to limit your screen time.
Same, I got an Active Watch & it's helped me feel like I don't need to be looking at my phone and still let's me reply to people if need be while at the same time i never get sucksd into messing with any harmful apps (like social media) & instead using the apps on the watch which all push me to be more active or drink water and such
@@ieisha1976 Why not just get a plain watch that doesn't have all those fancy icons, a watch you can't get online with? That's the whole point of getting a plain watch. Just a watch that tells you the TIME. And NOTHING else. Geez.

One thing I've found to be really helpful is treating my phone somewhat like a landline. When I work from home, I keep my phone essentially docked in one location. I find that the physical space between my phone and myself creates mental space for resisting the knee jerk habit of always checking the phone. Initially, this was pretty hard to do but I created a few automations on Apple Shortcuts that would detect when I had moved my phone and give me a subtle nudge to place it back. I've found that overall I just feel more peaceful with the physical distance.
i have somewhat of a similar thing where i keep my phone in my cupboard and close the cupboard so my laziness can be used as an advantage... if i NEED to use my device i will get up and stand near the cupboard while using it so i don't get distracted and easily spend too much time on the phone... it's actually pretty good lol only issue is to convince myself not to take the phone back to my work desk 😭
@@aster7482 Land lines work great, especially corded ones. You can't walk around with them, can't text on them and can't scroll on them like you would your cell phone. They're great.
Then you're extremely addicted and probably very unhealthy, Namae, sorry to say. After all, if they cell phone tower went down and you couldn't use your phone, what would you do? Would you have an anxiety attack?

The best advice I could give, is always be busy. You can only be addicted to your smartphone if you have the time to use it. Some people are always on their phones and don’t prioritize the things they should. If you have work, do work, not use your phone. Remain objective.
I understand what you mean. Unfortunately many people use their Smartphones to do work on. I would do whatever I could to NOT use my phone to do work on, so I won't be as likely to get addicted.
Based on my experience : 1). Being an introvert, I always hated to talk with someone in any social media platform so it gave me less interest to use social media apps ( facebook, instagram, etc.) and after some months I deleted those apps. 2). I always kept my phone's battery less than 30% after I figured out its addiction is hazardous to my lifestyle and later, I daily felt less motivated to use phone because of my phone's battery. And that's how I have cured my phone addiction. One thing I want to add is I still use youtube for learning and knowledge purpose but it doesn't affect anything bad to my daily routine.

I totally agree. We can't completely stay away from our phones, but we can definitely learn to control our urge to not use them when it's not necessary. Turning off the notification might not sound very important, but it does help a lot in reducing the usage.

@@stefan9870 hi. I know it wasn't my comment but what really helped me was setting time limits on apps like instagram or tiktok where I spent most time. From time to time I also make myself a day without the phone- I just turn it off and leave it somewhere and I just see how I function without it-and what was a surprise to me is that I function much better without having my phone with me all the time and it motivates me even more to reduce my screentime and I know that many people need their phones for work etc but I really recommend trying it out during weekend.
just spend a week without a phone, refreshingly amazing but I did miss 95% of information I needed to do my stuff so finding the right balance is important
I literally broke my phone last week and it's getting fixed right now, so I don't have a phone for a couple of weeks. Most parts of it are literally just really relaxing me atm. Some stuff is definitely annoying, but good thing is, most things I can do on my laptop and that I certainly don't use nearly as much.
You're so right about "needing it while it's blocked". I used to use productivity apps like Forest, that would block my phone for a few hours while I studied, and while it was great at first, I quickly realized that it had one big flaw: I couldn't use my calculator or refer to a calendar. Or sometimes, I was in the library and needed to Google something, but I couldn't. So instead, I learned to willingly limit my usage. I don't use grayscale or limit what's on my phone too much, but over time, I managed to reduce my usage from 6-7H per day, to an average of 2. Now some days do go up, but that's mostly because I do use my phone as my camera to film my UA-cam videos, but other than that, I can't recall the last time I spent all day scrolling through Instagram!
We waste so much time unknowingly with this habit. For me at least, It's almost as if my mind is on autopilot when I scroll through my phone. Good insight Nate
Good job dude, It’s getting crazy with the younger generations, but all generations as well. Ever go out to dinner and see a couple both on their cellphones, crazy. Thanks for the video.
My biggest problem is keeping my phone w me by saying "I need to study from it" or "I need to listen to study music" when all I use it for is instagram, UA-cam and other social media.. :/
I love the idea of making Instagram more like a newspaper rather than being super duper enticing by putting your phone into gray scale. I think it helps you see that the true color of the world is outside, that's where life is happening and most opportunities lie. I just put my phone into gray scale. Excited to give this a try. :)
Turning off notifications and "Batching" your cell phone time is HUGE, great call! I like what you said about turning off notifications, letting yourself check your phone/your texts maybe once every couple of hours, and absolutely batching together replying to texts and DMs. These days all of us creators/influencers/entrepreneurs have SO many interactions with our clients, collaborators, friends, etc. that you really need to control your inter-personal communication and leave plenty of "solo time" where you can ACTUALLY Get. Shit. Done! Hence why batching is so effective. You rock dude, love all of your content -- keep it coming! And the tips have always been super helpful to all of us :)
Great tips! I've found that taking a book to public places (buses, waiting rooms, etc.) is another great way to cut back on phone addiction. Not only are you not on your phone, but you also automatically look like the most educated person in the room (because everyone else is on *their* phones). Sometimes, you'll even get into a great conversation with someone who's read the same book or is interested in what you're reading.
@@appleblossom777 the benefits of not having to look at a screen and risk distraction from phone usage makes using a physical book better-- unless you are physically incapable of carrying the book
I just installed a grayscale extension on my browser and holy crap it makes a lot of a difference. This is making me realize how dumb my brain is made to be, it has adapted to getting distracted by random colors.
Thanks for sharing, Nate! Understandably, we are all connected in a digital world, and that has so many pros as well as cons. This shouldn't hinder us, instead it should help improve ourselves!

This is so important. Being switched on via your phone all the time can have a negative impact on your mental health. Great video to raise awareness of it :)
Yo Nate! Been subbed for a while, and am honestly just in love with your content and character. I myself started a UA-cam channel about a month ago and was wondering if you could give any advice on how to grow properly?
Love this! I got rid of social media recently and it has drastically changed my mood and helped my depression. The idea of making the screen gray is genius.
I'm older. And it's really odd to walk around outside and everyone is in this matrix-like bubble. It's almost as if I was this Neo person and I'm free from all of that.
I'm in the process of completely rebuilding my life - mainly within finances/career but also the little day to day habits to make sure my mental health is always looked after, and I have to say Nate you and your videos are helping me on that journey so much so thank you! All the best for everyone in 2020!
I use a lot of the tips he has given. The grey scale is new for me. Might try this one out. Another thing that has helped me a lot too is removing social media apps that I still use off the phone background. So every time I want to use it I have to search for it. Another tip for Apple users is setting time limitations on apps - it makes you much more aware how quickly time adds up throughout the day:)
Love how he was talking about all the distraction you could get, such as people snapchatting you and stuff... I'm just sat here like I check my phone every 2 mins knowing that no one has even bothered to message me. I'm just wishing that they did. I'm just that addicted.
Great comments Nate - some of my personal tips that I had found out as well apart from setting your phone to become minimalist is definitely to create a healthy environment where you do not need to look at your phone screen constantly or be surrounded by technologies. Some idea's: 1) Invest in a wireless phone charger stand, set your phone away from a visible reach and answer the important calls or messages that come through. Although people rely on phone's at work, setting it aside from your working space and create the environment can be tremendous help. 2) Make sure at your home that you set your environments appropriately, meaning that don't have technology in the same room as you sleep. Invest in screen less technologies (i.e. Google Nest) so when you sleep at night, you literally have an AI speaker to wake you up and are not tempted to answer calls during the night. Once I converted my mind-set that my phone is a communication device, and to use it to purely to call or communicate with other people during working hours it helps out so much to detach yourself from the technology and use it for it's original intent rather than forming another addiction that is only bound to set back your goals in life.
Nate Regina Hutchinson here in Texas. I am learning from you channel. I am following you on all platforms. Thank you. Please keep it coming. You are so amazing.
hahaha its really clever making your phone grey! Perhaps there is a correlation between vibrant colors and photoreceptors activity. I think setting a do not disturb schedule really helped me. Also just finally deciding on one social media platform to use and in 2020 I implemented a "unplug day" where I don't use my phone for a whole day and I decided on Sundays. I realized not using your phone was hard but the reward was pretty amazing, I did not experience any decision fatigue and was able to read and get stuff done without interruptions and save soooo much time!
I worked on my phone addiction a lot but I just could not get rid of UA-cam! But now, the color filter tip will definitely fix it. I will finally achieve my goal of using my phone only as a productive tool. Much thanks.
Tip! You can set the colour greyscale by triple clicking the lock button (when enabled through accessibility) then you can turn it off easily if you wanna watch UA-cam etc
I like the grayscale mode option. Im going to implement in for about a week or so and see if I like it. Ive gotten down to three hours of phone usage over the past few months but mostly, I think that's due to not having my phone while I work and deleting instagram from my phone every couple of months.
One thing I've done is choosing one day out of the week to just have no phone. The following days I feel overwhelmed by my phone and I don't really want to be on it
I love this idea, I strongly agree with the logic behind this video. I try to keep my phone usage down as much as possible, I'm not into social media and what not so that helps. but I hadn't even thought of some of these ideas, and I plan to try them out. wish more people would attempt something like this.

It would be so helpful if Instagram would make the "recommended for you page" an optional feature. Because I love the idea of following my friends and seeing what they're up to. But I don't want to look at random content, I just end up scrolling endlessly watching medium entertaining things.
actually you can make your friends account your "favorite" and only scroll through the "favorite" section on instagram. you can also click on the "following" section and only scroll through posts of account you follow. besides idk if you were talking about those random recommended posts that show on your front page of accounts you dont follow, but if you were, you can click on the 3 dots and deactivate that feature for a month. hope that helped :)

You can use it as a tool, that's fine. But scrolling social media is the waste of time.

@@despina2898 Phone increase has absolutely caused major attention deficit disorder to people these days there are studies about it, it's not a debate. No one mentioned ADHD specifically, but in my case I originally had ADHD and it went from something mildly inconvenient to literally destroying my life. Phone addiction does shorten attention span :(
I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 4 and I agree when I got my iPad when I was younger it made it so much worse. It’s all about being over stimulated and all the bright colours on the screen gave me serotonin so when it got taken away I would freakkkkk out because all my “happiness” was gone.

God bless you
That’s a blessing bro.
Not gonna lie, when i broke my watch half a year ago, i wasn’t wearing a watch for a couple months. I constantly found myself picking up my phone to check the time and ending up in an app or doing something on it. You seriously should get a watch if you want to limit your screen time.

The best advice I could give, is always be busy. You can only be addicted to your smartphone if you have the time to use it. Some people are always on their phones and don’t prioritize the things they should. If you have work, do work, not use your phone. Remain objective.
I don't think that's how addiction work... Even I started working, I will eventually come to conclusion to wse mobile. It's really cringe but serious.
TRUE
Then your just a workaholic
I understand what you mean. Unfortunately many people use their Smartphones to do work on. I would do whatever I could to NOT use my phone to do work on, so I won't be as likely to get addicted.
Based on my experience :
One thing I want to add is I still use youtube for learning and knowledge purpose but it doesn't affect anything bad to my daily routine.

just spend a week without a phone, refreshingly amazing but I did miss 95% of information I needed to do my stuff so finding the right balance is important

Great comments Nate - some of my personal tips that I had found out as well apart from setting your phone to become minimalist is definitely to create a healthy environment where you do not need to look at your phone screen constantly or be surrounded by technologies. Some idea's:
1) Invest in a wireless phone charger stand, set your phone away from a visible reach and answer the important calls or messages that come through.
My screen time averages 2.5 hours every day and even that feels like way too much
