I heard this story a few years back. Luther Vandross did his best to put this event in his life behind him. Stories about this accident are still sketchy to this day. May the involved parties be at peace.
And there is a reason why it is sketchy as it always is with these entertainers in the industry who have sold their souls for fame and fortune. Those same ones who the industry view to be worth more dead than alive. #MichaelJackson among many others🤷🏿♀️

By this late in the game (since 2020) most people are aware of how that music industry works & that it DEMANDS bid sacrifices..."blood in AND out". Luther was not just altruistic & helping Jimmie get a record deal for nothing. Bringing new talent is is how HOLLYWEIRD runs as they constantly need new influx into the game. Luther was leveraging himself & bringing in talent that he was developing & that helped to get him higher up in the industry. That made him more powerful but comes with a price. Jimmie's brother Larry was the one who ultimately paid the debt to settle the account.That is a damned slap in the face & an oops up side to head that ALL Luther got was a GROSSLY RDEUCED charge of misdemeanor & a freaking $2000 fine...like WTF? I have heard how Luther has made his sacrifices over his career, but that stroke was the beginning of the end for him. Once these stars are not as profitable as they on her were them the industry drops them. Luci is gonna get his too.

I used to watch "STAR SEARCH" with my grandmother back in the '80s. From Tracey Ross to Bobbi Brown, I clearly remember Luther Vandross and so did my mother. She was a major fan of his. I had missed this scandal. Next to this one, Vince Neil from Motley Crue was behind the wheel drunk and his best friend, Razzle from the glam metal band, HANOI ROCKS was killed. Vince was charged with manslaughter but didn't do any time just community service.
Ti, you did an awesome job as usual covering this "horrific," car accident that involved entertainer, Luther Vandross. I remember when this happened, it was very shocking and all over the news, television, radio, newspapers and magazines, too. Also, I remember hearing if Luther was to be interviewed you couldn't ask him about the car accident in which one of his passengers was killed, period! I remember when all of this happened and the stories that swirled around about Luther’s infatuation with Larry and Jimmy as well, even though he was a teen. However, he did get off pretty good because it was manslaughter. Even though Jimmy has grown to be an exceptional singer, but while he was competing on star search, his singing wasn’t as good as Luther was trying to say it was. I remember watching him, but kept thinking he is not as good as the other competitors. This is when I started wondering if Luther liked him for other reasons, but after finding out that his brother was his manager and close to Luther, I kind of suspected something was up. So sorry he lost his life because of reckless driving.
My sentiment exactly, Jimmy's voice was extremely underdeveloped at that time and he was certainly the weakest link on the show. His voice has profoundly progressed over the years. Luther just did his significant other Larry a favor by getting his brother signed, he knew that his voice was not of the greatest quality.
Everyone always speculated about Luther Vandross sexuality, but pretty much, everyone kind of knew he was gay. I'll never forget the private interview that Oprah Winfrey had done with Luther Vandross, he was in a wheelchair, and died a short time after that. Patti LaBelle and Luther were best friends, so as a surprise, Oprah called Ms. LaBelle on to the set to surprise him, Ms.Patti looked at him and said: LOOK AT YOU... LOOKING LIKE A DIVA 😳 They tried to play it off but it was too late. I don't know if you can still pull it up or not, but I was watching, and I'll never forget it.
One of Luther's background singers and solo artist...Lisa Fischer said .. Luther was such a perfectionist and loved REAL SINGERS... what was talented about this young man😳😳⁉️

This happened to a friend of mine, where he was in an accident due to construction on the road and his best friend died. The family didn't want to press charges but, the state did and he served a year in minimal security prison In SC.
How sad. my cousin was cheating on his wife. He picked up his side chick on his work break. he got into a car accident and killed her, he did 8years in jail. So tragic.

He was driving 20 miles over the speed limit and crossed the center divide into oncoming traffic.....how can he be found not at fault for the accident and the death of passenger? I love Luther to death but was justice really served here?

The story received attention at first but soon faded. I don't know what was worked out, but Venus didn't do any time in jail or prison.

What I’m saying is that I hear of these kinds of “accidents or deaths” all the time in almost everyone’s career. The details just seem really sketchy.

Luther had way more exceptional talent as his back up singers to be interested in anything Jimmy had to offer. Maybe the connection came from Luther knowing Larry before knowing Jimmy and then agreeing to produce an album as a favor for Larry who was also Jimmy's manager.

It would be amazing. Netflix should do it. And show all of his struggles with the industry, sexual orientation (back then being gay had to be kept secret ala George Michael) and his diabetes/weight problem(s).
It won't be truthful and give us what we really want. A Luther biopic will be sugarcoated and watered-down just like Respect with Jennifer Hudson. If we want the real story, someone who isn't family or had any connection to Luther would have to get behind it.

Lawrence (Larry) was more than just Jimmy's manager; allegedly, a producer friend of mine told me that Larry and Luther were dating at the time.
That was my thought when I heard the family didn't sue or blame him: he likely lost his partner in this, too.
