There was no other contemporary artist like Luther Van Dross. His vocals the music and song lyrics combined in a way no one could touch. And on top of it all, he presented as a gentleman. His sexual identity didn't matter. He sang about the human experience. I was so saddened by his passing. Rest in peace sir.
You're right. His sexual identity was only an issue with his marketing team or his mom (per the Patti Labelle interview). The problem with the documentary was that there were very few issues that we did not already know and that we could not easily ascertain from UA-cam videos or other social media. You did a great job as usual with you review!!! #loveandblessings
I'm glad they respected Luther Vandross and his legacy. I feel like in the past few years, so many people have been talking his sexuallity instead of his music.
Isn’t it a disservice to not talk about WHY he couldn’t freely be himself? That his career would have been over b/c of homophobia, especially in the Black community.
I'm sad that Luther Vandross suffered so much from people talking about his weight and his sexuality. TRUE FANS DIDN'T CARE ABOUT THAT; WE JUST LOVED LUTHER!!! PERIOD!!!
It was an AWESOME documentary about LUTHER VANDROSS!!! I miss him so but he left us a large catalog of songs that still get airplay and streams today. ❤
Hi Calvin! His sexual identity was only an issue with his marketing team or his mom (per the Patti Labelle interview). I am from London. I saw Luther at Wembley Arena in 1987, One of the best concerts I’ve seen, absolutely sensational. Thank you for your lively review 🫶🏾
I thought it was a great time. We are currently inundated with so much information unrelated to the talent of our favorite artists that the talent sometimes gets lost. So, it was really great to focus on his artistry and hearing him talk about it. The friends that shared about him seemed really protective of him and his legacy. They clearly were his trusted inner circle. I like that they discussed his sexuality, mostly in the context of how he managed the discussion of it. And even though he is dead and many/most believe that he was gay, I love that his friends still guarded his privacy. And the filmmakers handled it very sensitively and discreetly like he did. Can’t wait to see it again!
For me, as someone who has been a Luther Vandross fan since the early 1980s and saw him in concert in Los Angeles in July 1986, he was IMHO the last great Male R&B singer.
Good lookin out Calvin! Until your review, I didn’t even know about the Luther documentary. Had to travel an hour out of town to see it, but it was sooo worth it! It really did feel like the cookout, all of these strangers connecting, singing, laughing and yes, crying together, wow! So amazing!
Calvin, your review popping up got me to look up showtimes and to the theater ( I didn't know it was going to be released in theater). It felt good to hear the backstory to some of these songs and the experiences people had with him. My hubby Luther ❤
I still miss Luther. Can't wait to see the documentary! Agree with you re the TV show themes. Loved the theme from Family Ties. "What would we do baby without us? Sha na na na". 😁
I only saw Luther once. 🙁 Saw him at the Cap Center in 1988 and had GREAT seats! I could have touched Luther I was so close. I LOVE and miss Luther ❤️. RIP
Thanks for sharing, I have not seen the documentary, in fact, I was not aware that it had been produced and available for viewing. I have a friend who is from Brooklyn and he was the one who introduced me to Luther's very first album he and his wife actually were in a group with Luther that would perform at the Appollo Theatre they would be the opening act a lot of the time, he would often share with me how they hung out with Jimmie Walker and Bette Milder as they were all performers back then at the Appollo Theatre again thanks for sharing and I do hope I get the chance to see the documentary!
I saw the documentary in the theatre today (limited release). It was great, I loved the music and hearing Nate, Marcus and his background singers speak about him. I knew his story but enjoyed hearing the details about his early career. Didn't know about the all the Grammy nominations before he won. I was fortunate to have seen him live many many times. I even have that Wimberley concert on DVD somewhere. I walked out crying because he wanted to be loved but said he never experienced being in love...that broke me...everybody falling in love to your music but you😢
i remember there was a prayer vigil for him. My pastor was asked to be a part of it. it was held in nyc. i believed he is buied in George Washington Cemetery in Paramus NJ.
Thank you for sharing ! so looking forward to seeing this ...he ofc was the soundtrack of my life ....and every wedding I attended ..my mentors were friends with big and knew the truth of his sexuality..when he was in a relationship, reflected in his weight...I don't think wih his ambitions, being black and queer , during the height of the AIDS crisis, would've allowed him to share his gift ..sad and heartbreaking...
I remember reading Craig Seymour's bio of him asking Luther about his sexuality, and Luther likening a nosy reporter to plane trying to land, and never landing, Lol
I was at that performance the children had a great time and were happy to learn about the artist as well. Let’s groove tonight was another performance as well. The children are learning at the same time.
I just saw the Luther documentary today. I really enjoyed it. My only critique is, I didn’t like the exclusion of Patti Labelle in the documentary. Luther started her fan club. She was a big part of his life. It seems like the people closest to him were upset by her comments on WWHL. I don’t think she said anything wrong. I would have rather seen her instead of Jamie Foxx who didn’t know him personally. Just my opinion.
@@jayman3915 yea I think in recent times she may have landed a certification with the help of streaming. I was shocked when I heard an old interview of hers and she talked about never having a gold album.
Luther came to VA.beach VA.sept.2000 at va.ampither at the time called . Then before that in 1993 he came to Hampton coliseum with envoue I didn't go to that one .

People can be curious about any aspect of somebody's life, nobody should police that, if people want to know, they want to know.
Right and diminishing his talent. I absolutely love his voice.
Isn’t it a disservice to not talk about WHY he couldn’t freely be himself? That his career would have been over b/c of homophobia, especially in the Black community.
@denew9 Folks don't understand, it was definitely a stigma at that time.
I'm so excited to see this documentary and I'm so thankful that Luther got his due on this project.
His albums stay in my rotation.
I'm sad that Luther Vandross suffered so much from people talking about his weight and his sexuality. TRUE FANS DIDN'T CARE ABOUT THAT; WE JUST LOVED LUTHER!!! PERIOD!!!
Right I never cared who he was singing about or what he looked like singing. He was truly amazing
Awesome talent.
I can't wait to see this. Luther's music deserves to be explored. I love that the younger generation is blowing up some of his songs on social media.
Luther also sang background on "Fame" by Irene Cara. He was the one who suggested the "remember, remember, remember" refrain.
My favorite song of his is "Don't you know that.
I LOVE your music related videos, I hope we get a Quincy Jones video on his passing/legacy/impact. 🙏🏾❤️
Dance With My Father still tears me up! Can't listen to it at times. Gotta be in the right spirit.
ABSOLUTELY! My daddy has been gone from me 20 years now. He passed 10/21/2004. I played "the song" last week.😢
It was an AWESOME documentary about LUTHER VANDROSS!!! I miss him so but he left us a large catalog of songs that still get airplay and streams today. ❤
Luther might technically be my favorite artist. Give Me The Reason, Power of Love, Never Too Much and For You To Love are my favs
Yes! Luther, one of the ultimate lyricist.
Luther had so many great songs. "Wait for Love" is one of my favourite Luther Vandross songs. Rest well in Heaven Luther.
🥰🙏🏾🥰✝️
If I'm crying listening to your review, I'm going to be a mess watching the actual documentary.
I can't wait to see the Luther Vandross documentary. Luther Vandross is truly missed.🥰🙏🏾✝️🎶🎤🥰

To me they could have not shown that Patti clip. They were taking a shot at her. They were pissed at her for saying something everyone knew already.
Yes! The bridge in "Here And Now" is TOTALLY POWERFUL.💯💯💯
I cannot WAIT to see THIS!!!!!!!!!
I play his music on my school bus! 😇😉
Hey, my handsome. Thank you for the wonderful review on Luther. He deserves his flowers.
I really look forward to seeing this. Good review❤

I was at that concert too, I went to the Hammersmith apollo concert he did prior and knew i had to see him again

Never too much, never too much 🎶 🎵........whenever I hear that, I think of being a very little girl, playing outside.
Everyone stayed until the very end and walked out of that theater with tears in their eyes.

My one regret in life-never seeing Luther in concert.
Was very excited to see this! Glad they did justice to his legacy
I tweeted Luther was my favorite male vocalist of all time years ago. You should seen the way the "they not like us" crowd reacted 🤣🤣🤣💜
Calvin, your review popping up got me to look up showtimes and to the theater ( I didn't know it was going to be released in theater).

I can't wait to see the documentary based on your review. Excellent.

I’m gonna save this, because I was supposed to see the movie tonight but couldn’t make it. Damn I’m tempted. 😂

I see OWN in the credits. I guess portions of interviews w/Oprah maybe included in the movie.
I can’t wait to see this one. It sounds great. I wish it were available on streaming during Thanksgiving. My family would love to watch it together
Hi hubby Calvin ❤
Can’t wait for this to hit uk 🇬🇧 Thanks for the review ❤
He’s my all time fav and sad I don’t see the documentary coming to Houston. Been stalking the website ☹️
I'm glad you found this documentary an entertaining, informative and authentically true period piece. I'm excited too!!

Great review💙 Where can I watch this doc Calvin?
I remember reading Craig Seymour's bio of him asking Luther about his sexuality, and Luther likening a nosy reporter to plane trying to land, and never landing, Lol
So basically get your popcorn, drink, redvines and have a box of tissue b/c you will be on an emotional rollercoaster. Got it! 😢
That was Baldwin Hills Elementary School students rendition of Everybody’s Dancing.
I think the choreography is by Malinda Jackson.
Yes. 🙌
Baldwin Hills Elementary has other fabulous performances. Check out Remember the Time by Michael Jackson
I was at that performance the children had a great time and were happy to learn about the artist as well. Let’s groove tonight was another performance as well. The children are learning at the same time.
