  • I apologize in advance for the quality of this video!
    This Kitchenaid mixer ran great, it was sent in for maintenance, which is necessary to keep them running well for years to come. We replaced the grease and gasket, checked the brushes and bearing, lubricated the rear bushing, lubricated the lift arm, and checked the cord.

    4 years later and you saved me! My stupid lever wouldn’t turn off. Then I played with it and got it stuck in the off position. Now I see the 4 screws that I missed. Definitely going to get the red grease. Thanks Broski! Didn’t feel like kicking out $400+

    Got a never washed, poorly-maintained KSM5 from a relative who decided it was leaking too much nasty oil into their food to use anymore. I was able to disassemble, detail, degrease, grease, replace the worm gear, install a new gasket, and adjust the speed controls. All thanks to this video. It looks and works like new. Thanks so much for posting this. When I pulled the metal ring off it was completely full of oil from the old grease.

    Thank you for this - bought a very similar 4.5-qt bowl-lift off Craigslist for $50, and while it worked well, it was direly in need of new grease - as evidenced by the oil stain it left on my floor mat on the ride home. Going through and de-greasing and re-greasing now, thanks to your video.

    I think I would proactively replace the front bearing on every teardown relube, if it's a cheap part. I would have put a little wrap of good quality tape on that small cut on the ground wire's plastic to save the cord, but that's just me. Nice video, good narration, thanks!

    I just bought a K5-A today for 50 bucks. It has a small amount of oil where things attach. And the screw cap holding the brushes was lost somehow when she brought it to me. I am interested and cleaning and making this machine work like a charm. I did notice some blackening to the brushes when I looked at them but they are the right length I believe. Just sooted it seems. But with its age that might be expected. I know nothing of mixers I just bake. Would be interested in chatting with you sometime. Very detailed videos... Good job! Subscribing.

    Good video, although you should always use food-grade grease, not automotive/industrial grade. There's a high likelihood it will leak at some point, and could well contaminate food. You can buy the right stuff on Amazon.

      @@vintagemixersandmore1666 I can appreciate that, but years as a health inspector kick in...when they leak, and they do, it's not cool to have that in your cake batter when the beauty ring overflows. At any rate, it's still a good video. Thanks.

      @@AnnainOK1hanks. This has been debated over and over, everyone has their preference. This is my position.. The kitchenaid grease tends to liquify at a much lower temperature, and breaks down much quicker, essentially guaranteeing it will leak, you can see this on most kitchenaids after a few years they are leaking not only into the trim ring, but also through the gasket, under the band, and into the rest of the housing. Using a far more stable grease, designed to keep its consistency over a long period of time, and in a wide range of temperatures, will keep it in the gearbox where it belongs.

      If it starts to drop into the food I would throw the mix out either way. Who wants to eat gear grease even if it's food safe (probably containing metal dust)?!

      Check the brushes, if you removed them it is possible one of them is not seating correctly and not making contact with the armature. If it isnt that, it is most likely something else simple! Good job by the way, once you find the issue Im sure it will serve you a very long time!

    Great video! I have a problem with the arms of mine. They are too lose when I lift it up and they shake a little when I use my mixer. I couldn’t see in your video if there is a screw we have to tighten inside the base, or anything I can do so that they don’t move as much. The lever seems to be working fine. Not sure if there are pieces inside that broke. I didn’t open mine yet, I’m just testing the water 😅

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому +1

      Hi laura! If the arm assembly is loose, it could be in need of an adjustment on the spring tension, you should see the nut and spring looking into the arm from under the mixer. It could also be something broken in the lift arm lever assembly, but really hard to say. When in the raised position, the spring keeps the tension on the arm, if it is loose, or something else inside is loose, it may not have enough tension.

      It sounds like the speed control switch lever may not be making contact with the speed control plate? Check to make sure that it contacts the speed control plate and pushes it out as you move the lever. Other than that, I can only think of either the rear bearing plate nuts have really come loose, or the governor has come loose.

    Thank you so much for the in depth video. Yesterday as I was making bread in my mixer I turned my back to dig through my freezer. Mixer is on the under cabinet lift system and doesn't have any side rail...but it's getting two before it goes back into service. It crashed onto the floor pulling the power cord out of the housing. Ripped the ground wire right out of the terminal end but the black and white female connectors remained attached to the wires. I was so worried about the necessary disassembly to repair it and you have eased my mind. I'd like your advice as to if I should go ahead and replace the grease while I'm working on it. The machine is nearly 30 years old. Hasn't had a ton of hard use like kneading bread but with the age of the grease I'm in the mind to change it to the Lucas red grease. I change tractor and truck engine oils by time not computer recommendation and after seeing that dried out solidified grease in the machine you did made me realize how negligent I've been. Thanks again for the video.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666

      I wouldn't know for sure without looking at it, but the first thing I would check is to be sure all your pins are in place, the pin that holds the worm gear drive to the shaft, and the pin that locates the big metal gear to the shaft that goes to the planetary. When you have the mixer apart, check that everything rotates as it should, when you have the large gear and shaft along with the worm drive assembly on the bottom half of the motor, put a small screwdriver into the big shaft where the pin that holds the planetary to it goes, and rotate that and see if everything is turning ok.

      It is hard to say, double check all your connections, and make sure the on/off switch is engaging correctly. Other than that, the only thing else I can think of is one of the brushes is not seated all the way. If they are angled on one edge, they will only fit one way, or else they will not touch the armature, and you will have no power. Remove them and double check that the angled edge is lined up with the corner of the brush holder that has the protruding angle, you should see it if you look in the brush holder with a flashlight.

At that point I would say the machine may need an adjustment or 2 but really no major maintenance for quite a while.

      Usually just dish soap or simple green to clean it as best as I can when the original finish is staying. The grease is difficult to remove, but persistence will help, may have to wash it a few times. When they are getting refinished I can clean them with TSP and hot water.

    I have my husband’s grandmother’s Hobart K5-A Mixer (purchased in the ‘50s) which still works but is leaking oil. It has the original bowl and original paddle but no whisk or dough hook. It’s too big for my countertop and too heavy for me to lift so I’ve decided to sell. Any thoughts on how to do this and how much to charge?

      I am not sure what to suggest for price, but to sell without having to ship, your best options will be facebook marketplace or craigslist. If you dont mind shipping, then ebay would be your best bet. Im not really sure what they are currently selling for, but if you check on ebay under "sold" listings, you can get an idea of what others have paid for the same model. www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=kitchenaid+k5-a&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1

    Hello Rick! Nice to see you work on another KitchenAid! Very Inspiring!
    How do you reoil the planetary oilite bushings? I was thinking of heating them with a hot air gun so that the hot bushing would soak the new oil in... Apparently SAE 30 or SAE 40 is what you're supposed to use for recharging these bushings...
    Great planetary pin installation technique :-)
    Nice wax job on the handle, but you forgot the bowl yoke slide ;-)
    I reoiled the back motor bushing on my K5SS and in the removal process damaged the governor just so that it started to clatter a bit in stir... :-( I'm amazed you're able to remove them with your bare hands... I'll definitely NOT follow the manual for this anymore, it calls for using two screwdrivers :-(
    Did you repack the front motor ball bearing? Or is it sealed?
    About the brush caps... The brass insert tends to fly off if you're not careful removing them, ask me how I know ;-)
    FYI The book says high speed adjusted at speed 6 and it's 180 RPM... And yes that thing does sound MUCH better now than when you first got it :-)

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому

      Thanks Johnny, good morning!!
      I put a little grease on the shaft before sliding it in the bushing, and I make sure there is grease under the washer and under the gear. Heating it might actually work, it could pull oil into it as it cools! I had given some thought to doing the slide, but it fits so loose I wasn't sure it would have mattered. The governor seems to pop off pretty easily with a sharp pull, but I see how they can get damaged easily. The front bearing on this unit is sealed, I was actually trying to show that in the video when the camera cut out from the card being full. LOL if the brush cap spring flies off for me I will have to add sound effects for sure! :)
      Thanks for the adjustment speed, I couldn't recall what it was, so I just set it to what sounded correct.
      I tried to get a really good video for this one, and I failed pretty bad, I was out of frame for some, it was blurry for some, I just don't have the camera skills to pull it off, but I hope the owner will still enjoy it, and that it will still be a help to others. Looking on youtube afterwards, I see there are a ton of videos for kitchenaids, so I guess it isn't very critical in the end, still I was disappointed.

    • @johnnyjimj
      @johnnyjimj 6 років тому +2

      Actually your videos are by far the most informative, because we can actually follow what you're doing. That and your calm voice and It's like being in Tech Class, always a great pleasure for me to watch :-D
      The Speed Control Plate should be screwed in evenly - if not you may get 'stuttering' at some speeds. If you need to screw it in unevenly to avoid stuttering speeds it's a sign of wear on the contacts. These contacts are just tips, there are no 'buttons' on them, because they carry very little current as a signal into the phase board TRIAC which does the power handling.
      Oh and BTW I broke down today as I wanted to get some SuperLube, as I couldn't find any at Canadian Tire I saw they had some Red n' Tacky and i grabbed a tube ;-) With the Lucas X-Tra I should be OK although I don't think there is a lubricant that can do it all: for every type of gear, size and speed there is an ideal lubricant so I'm still studying all that, greases, oils, thickeners, viscosity, extreme pressure, damping... Maybe I'll end up mixing my own in my Sunbeam Mixmaster like one would make a cream topping for a dessert, hahaha

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому +1

      Thanks buddy, I appreciate that! Thanks also for confirming the even adjusting of the plate, I know the service manual call for even spacing, but I have seen some sites say angle it to get it to sound the best :O
      It goes against every shred of common sense I have lol. I will continue to space them evenly.
      I am converting a k45 to solid state, found out it is far more involved than I had anticipated, but am ordering another speed plate since the one I have is bent, like someone tried to make an adjustment to it, and it runs like crap.
      I don't think there can ever be a lubricant that does it all, so I look for one that seems good for what I use it for, even if designed for something else. I did use the mobil 1 synthetic grease for a bit, but it was too pricey. The lucas oil seems perfect consistency, really sticks to the teeth of the gear well, and doesn't liquify nearly as fast as some others. I may do a test one day with the lucas oil against the kitchenaid grease, mainly because I am curious since I see kitchenaids leak like mad.
      Kitchenaid grease is mineral oil with up to 1% crystalline silica.
      Lucas oil is lithium based with ZDDP up to 5%. I have no idea if ZDDP has any relevance to the slow moving gears in a mixer however :)
      You will have to give me your honest opinion of the red and tacky! Good or bad!

    • @johnnyjimj
      @johnnyjimj 6 років тому

      Red 'n Tacky has ZDDP? WOW! I wasn't aware of that... That's interesting! The original KitchenAid grease, according to my old manual, is Benalene 930-2 which is in fact, Shell Darina R2, a clay based grease, which has been superseded by Shell Gadus U460L 2 (base oil has a viscosity of 460 cSt at 40°C, 35cSt at 100°C).
      To confuse matters even more, I read an article by Nye lubricants which says (showing a KitchenAid but without mentioning the name) that it has started using its damping grease, a very high viscosity grease with very low stiffness (thick oil, fluid thickener) to make its gearboxes quieter ;-) Of course no way for us civilians to get our hands on that grease and with the plethora of fake Timken/Falex wear tests out there there is no way for someone to truly know greases work, how and why >:-(
      I have work this weekend but hopefully will be able to take the K5SS completely apart this time, hopefully correct the governor clatter at low speed and replace the moly grease I just used with the Red 'n Tacky to see if it makes a difference.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому +1

      That's interesting, and confusing for sure! ! I looked up the SDS for the benalene 930-2 and that is where I saw the mineral oil as the main ingredient (confidential CAS #) , I wonder is it a newer formula? sds.chemtel.net/docs/Fuchs%20Lubricants%20Co-0002505/Fuchs%20Lubricants%20Company_RENOLIT%20BENALENE%20930-2_Unknown_11-21-2016_English.pdf
      The SDS for the red and tacky doesn't say what it is (mixture) except for the ZDDP. lucasoil.com/pdf/SDS_Red-Tacky-10005.pdf
      You will have to let me know your opinion if you swap the grease. I have always thought moly grease was the top tier. If I can ever find time, I would love to set up some kind of wear test that includes the KA grease, along with cold and hot tests. It would not be scientific by any means, but I think it would be very interesting.
