  • This mixer is finally ready to go home! The restoration went well, but ordering parts seemed to be a hassle, back orders and long delivery times really held it up. You can see in the video it was started in the old shop, and finished in the new one. The feet were the final parts to come in. This machine was powder coated in a color called "R Green" to match avocado green appliances. I think it will be a good match.

    Wow! Beautiful work on that mixer...I'm so impressed! These Hobart Kitchenaid mixers are so worth the effort to restore...they're priceless to bakers...they don't make them like the Hobart's any more. I have the same mixer and I will never get rid of it. Thanks for the vid...great work!

      What about the new ones is worse specifically? I've read that the new ones aren't as good, but what did they change? I thought maybe the plastic gear but this one clearly has a plastic gear too.

    We have a K5SS that we bought new many years ago. It still works flawlessly. I plan on making Stöllen bread at Christmas and had considered buying a beefier mixer like the Bosch 800 watt or the Kitchenaid 6500. However, I think I will stick with our tried and true K5. Good video BTW. Many thanks.

    Vintage Mixers & More:
    Thanks for posting this video just in time.
    I recently acquired a Hobart K5SS built between '76 & '86. According to the previous owner, it wasn't used much and was in storage for 20 years. I ran it up and got a strong smell. I'm figuring this smell was from a long dormant motor and maybe funky grease. After it ran for a while the smell pretty much went away and the case didn't warm up like when I first ran it. Works well through all of the speeds now, after the grease got mixed and warmed up. I ran a watt meter check and power levels increased evenly and peaked at 91 Watts without load on speed #10. Service manual says it should register up to 135 watts, so all seems well. I tried stalling the mixer on the Stir speed, and it did not slip and power readings went up and down the way they're supposed to under load changes.
    What I now want to do is change out the grease and lube it up, but minimize the amount of disassembly, since I'm a newbie on working on this machine. The paint is in really nice original condition, so I don't need to paint it. What would you recommend on re-greasing and lubrication to minimize disassembly, since it seems to be running so well now and had so little use in the past?

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому +3

      I think you figured it out, it didn't like sitting that long! :)
      to change the grease you do need to do a little bit of disassembly. Remove the back cap, the band, the drip ring and planetary, then the 4 screws that hold it to the stand (if it is a lift arm model), remove the screws around the planetary, and 4 screws holding upper and lower halves together. Separate the 2 halves, clean out as much grease as you can, and regrease with your preferred grease! Reasembly is reverse, put the 2 halves together, install the 4 screws, and the 5 planetary screws, attach to base with those 4 screws, reinstall the planetary with some grease, and the drip ring, then the band and the rear cap. I definitely advise ordering a new gasket.
      Despite not being used much, time still has its effect on the grease. Wear may be an issue, but more so is the extra drag it can put on the motor, which you don't want when the motor is under load. If it seems fine, then you may be fine, but an ounce of prevention as they say lol

    • @audiophileman7047
      @audiophileman7047 6 років тому +2

      Vintage Mixers and More: We're exactly on the same page! :-) My wife thought it would be fine just the way it is, but the gear box grease is over 30 years old. Time and settling (chemical separation and breakdown) can take a toll on grease, and these gears really carry the load. As you said, we don't need premature wear, especially since they don't make them this well anymore. Hadn't thought about replacing the gasket, so thanks for the tip; I'll have to order one of those ASAP. It took me a very long time to find this K5SS mixer in this nice, not much used condition and at a reasonable price. I very much appreciate your advice and thanks again!

    • @audiophileman7047
      @audiophileman7047 4 роки тому +1

      @@vintagemixersandmore1666 I know it's been a while, but I'm back to ask another question. I replaced my grease and gasket about a year ago, and it's now leaking a little. It was a bear getting it back together. The two halves wouldn't go back together without some jimmying of the shaft. I really wonder if I really got it back together right. Is it normal for some grease to leak? Should I install a new gasket? Is there a better gasket available? Do you recommend using a gasket sealer in addition to the gasket? We use the mixer for regularly mixing of heavy bread and pizza dough, so it may heat up a bit. Not sure if this gasket is good enough for heavy use. Would appreciate any advice you and anyone out there has to give. Thanks!

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому +1

      @@audiophileman7047 It is possible the gasket didnt seat correctly, or something similiar happened when reassembling. Sometimes you do have to rotate the shaft a little bit to get the gears to mesh when reassembling the 2 halves, and the gasket should be fine without gasket sealant as long as the mating surfaces didnt have any gouges. If you used the kitchenaid grease, and got the machine warm mixing dough, there is a chance it could have gotten runny enough to leak through the gasket, it is mineral oil based and the gasket doesnt really keep it in too well once it gets liquidy. Check the gasket first, and make sure it is intact, if not then order a new one from partselect. Let me know what you find!

    • @audiophileman7047
      @audiophileman7047 4 роки тому +1

      @@vintagemixersandmore1666 Thanks for the advice! You are always very helpful. I've seen videos where people are able to get the halves to go together pretty easily. In my case it was a bear. Had to wiggle the shaft back and forth and it went down slow, but it looked okay and the gears were engaged. It was okay for about a year, no leaks. Now it's leaking. I may just opt for new gasket. Some things have come up, so I may not get to it for a while, but I will let you know what I found when I get to it. Thanks again!

Absolutely stunning the finished product is just like he said it looks brand spanking new and I love the color it’s beautiful. I just purchased mine because I’ve heard that they’re the holy Grail of Kitchen aid mixers. I’m waiting for it to come and hoping I don’t have any issues with it. The person I bought it from did say that they took it apart cleaned it and got a new gasket and re-greased it so fingers crossed! So that’s kind of why I’m asking if you still do this for a living. Just AMAZING WORK!

      @vintagemixersandmore1666  5 років тому +3

      Yea, I dont use it because it will drip into the bowl eventually. A grease that wont break down or seperate as easily as the KA grease will stay in the machine and not escape through the gasket and make a mess of everything. I only use the KA food safe grease if it is specified by the owner.

    Hi Rick, Very nice video and a great color I have seen this model mixer in a color almost identical to the one she chose as the original color so it looks like a Hobart kitchenAid factory color.
    I thought there would be gear wear from the sounds when you first turned it on, but the gears from this vintage are still so well made; not like the new ones in my opinion.
    Best to you Rick, Brett

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому

      Hey Brett, thanks!! I hope she is happy with the color when she receives it :)
      Honestly I expected it too, to have gears worn, but was surprised I didn't find any. You can see at one point after it is reassembled, I am trying to hold the planetary and put a bit of load on it while turning to check for any sounds or grinding, and there was none. I am thinking just bad grease was the cause of the noise, and may have failed a gear if ran like that for a long time, but your right, they seem awfully durable!

    • @johnnyjimj
      @johnnyjimj 6 років тому +1

      Bad grease is terrible, it can even act as serious impediment, I can vouch for that! My own K5SS sounded pretty bad when I first got it and after I cleaned it and regreased with some Red-n-Tacky like Rick uses, it ran remarkably smooth under load with 1150 grams of dough yesterday, as a matter of fact I could not distinguish any difference in gear sounds whether empty or under load! Of course the K5SS is louder than the 6000 HD, but it breezed through the dough juts as well as the 6000 HD does. As a matter of fact I'm getting ready to make a 3 loaf dough load with it now (1700g) to see if it makes any difference.

    • @johnnyjimj
      @johnnyjimj 6 років тому +1

      So I just mixed a batch of whole rye 2/3 and whole wheat 1/3 with 60% hydration (about 1700g) at speed 2 for 15 minutes and although at it ran just fine, no noises, but the motor casing got warm (gear case stayed cool) so I presume the Re-n-Tacky did its job to perfection. Considering it's much easier to work with white flour than whole grain, I have no 'dough' the K5SS properly maintained can handle 3 500g loaves of bread at a time in stride :-)

    My K5SS was built in 1980. As I've worked on it, I sure have noticed that the old parts were much, much better quality. It pains me to change the old parts out of my mixer. Whirlpool (owns Kitchenaid) is really trying to make every last penny and seem so profit driven that quality really doesn't matter to them anymore. I once owned five major Whirlpool appliances at one time and had problems with four out of five of them; there will be no more Whirlpool for me. Too bad, they used to be one of the very best appliance makers.

      Its the way everything has gone sadly, so many buy outs and mergers over the years, Im not sure there are too many separate manufacturers left.
      Want to see something interesting, check this out. Also note that AEG is the manufacturer of Ridgid tools www.ttigroup.com/en/our_brands/

    • @audiophileman7047
      @audiophileman7047 6 років тому +1

      Yes, that is the sad trend. Decreasing competition means decreasing quality and higher prices. The problem comes when they cheapen products down so much for profit that the consumer ends up with junk. The reason why I bought my K5SS vintage mixer was because I didn't want to buy a new one. Take a look at the reviews for these "new" Kitchenaid mixers. There are problems early on and even people who don't have problems say that they don't expect them to last very long or they can't handle heavy bread dough. My wife is a master baker who makes homemade bread all the time, and she makes other things like pizza dough, cookies, etc. We need something that's going to hold up well for regular use. These old machines are legendary, as you know. So here I am, trying to get one in great working shape. It's the old time quality that went out the window when some corporate executives decided that their bonuses needed to be bigger. Can't say I blame them too much, since we all want to make money, but when it leads to poor quality, we all lose money.

    It's a plain 10-24 machine nut.
    It fell off one of the stator hold down studs.
    I noticed the nuts on your mixer are the aircraft locking type (with the nylon ring)?
    Fix.com wants $23.88 for one lock nut?
    Are these available at the local hardware store?
    Are there enough threads to engage the nylon locking ring?
    Or just put the plain nut back on with some red bearing grade Loctite?

The coating on the beater keeps wearing off due to rubbing the bowl. I know that some of the Kitchenaid's have a screw to adjust height, but mine does not. Is there any way to adjust it so the beater does not hit the bowl?

      Hi Lois, thanks! The only way I have found to adjust the height of the lift arm with no adjustment is to loosen up the nut on the very bottom of the lift arm assembly, you can see it from the hole in the bottom of the base. Unfortunately there is usually a castle nut there with a cotter pin making it difficult to get to without actually removing the base. Also, take a peek under the motor housing where the lift arm makes contact when fully raised, there may be a small screw there you can screw out. If not, then another thought would be to stick a piece of adhesive backed foam (small strip) where the lift arm contacts when fully raised to stop it a little sooner. Hope this helps!

    I'm about to get myself a K5SS but not a "Hobart's" any idea when this was made; Is this worth it ? I'm wondering if the height of the bowl can be changed like the new ones where a screw in the head mechanism can lower it so it's closer to the bowl and you get a better whisk for small amount of eggs for instance

      I believe they started manufacturing the SS model in the early 80's. The solid state models are actually quite nice, they also run cooler than the non SS models, since those have a large resistor that gets quite hot on lower speeds. As far as the lift arm adjustment, I know some did not have an adjustment screw, but some adjustment could be made from the nut underneath that you can see in the lift arm assembly, you can add or remove a little tension on the spring by adjusting that nut.

    Thought of another question for you, Vintage Mixers and More. I cleaned off the rubber feet on the mixer, but was thinking of putting new ones on. When I researched the feet, I could only find the ones that push in and are not held by screws. Would you please tell me where you found the rubber mixer feet that are held on by screws or are they not made any more? Not sure if the new feet just push into the screw holes and the screws are no longer needed.

    I have two K5SS mixers. One is a Hobart era the other is not . The one marked as a Hobart seems much stronger, as it doesn't bog down when mixing dough or using the grinding attachment.On the one that is just marked K5SS which we bought new in the 80's, I replaced grease with Red and Tacky and worm gear which is a grey color and appears to be metal and not plastic looks perfect, as are the brushes.Could my motor be weak and need replacing?

      Hi John! I would really doubt the motor needs replacing. I think the solid state machines do seem to lag a bit, but the tradeoff is the solid state components wear longer and dont generate nearly as much heat. Interesting that you would have a metal worm gear!

    Nice restoration, extremely useful channel, I have learned a lot from your videos. Please, I have been really puzzled by a problem in my mixer and have not found any good reference to the same problem online. It is a K533DWH bowl lift. The whole planetary wobbles up and down while mixing dough, the movement is visible and it makes a clanking sound, the whole main shaft on which the planetary is attached moves up and down. Another strange thing is that the beater clearance to the bowl is OK but the adjustment is stretched to it’s maximum, meaning that I have no more room to lift the bowl. Any tips on what might be wrong? I would send you the mixer for a revision, but I live in Brazil. Another strange thing that I noticed is that my planetary is different from the one in the video on the inside, yours has a big protrusion in the casting on the opposite side to the beater shaft which is not present in mine. I am desperate for some advice.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому

      Thanks! I see how that can be puzzling! I would check the gear on the main shaft the planetary attaches to, it is held in place on the shaft with a pin that may have come out, I dont know its hard to say. Sounds like you need to open the gearbox and do some investigating for sure. As far as the lift arm, you can get a little adjustment out of it by adjusting the tension on the lift arm assembly, if you look under the machine into the lift arm column, you will see a nut with a spring behind it, you can try to tighten the nut a little more, putting more tension on the spring and see if that helps.

      @@vintagemixersandmore1666 Thanks for the reply, having the time to operate a business and also help random people on UA-cam is commendable. I have already opened the gearbox and the pin is in place, the only strange thing that I can see is that I’m missing one of the washers in the planetary side (one of those two washers that are in the main shaft) but It’s thickness is considerably less than the movement of the planetary, in any case I’ll try to buy a new set but It will take some time since the replacement parts are unavailable in my country due to the COVID-19 crisis. Thanks for the bowl lift tip, the tension on my lift arm seams lighter than what I see in your videos, I’ll tighten it a bit and see what effect it has.

      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому

      @@MrEvitaerc You bet! If the pin is intact it may take a little more investigation to find the issue. Usually there is up and down play but once the planetary is installed it limits it to next to none, but if you have noise with the planetary installed, there is obviously still an issue. Good luck with it!

      Hey Alex! The 2 screws with the springs behind them are used to set your lowest speed, the single screw sets the range for the higher speed, and can affect speed 2 , as well as the difference between the 2 highest speeds. May have to set the stir speed first, then make adjustments to the other screw to get speed 2 and high speed set. Okay, I received the replacement speed control plate and installed it. Tried to test it on the stir speed and it wouldn't come on! I shouldn't be surprised! It worked on all the other speeds. Turned out that the metal strip wasn't closing to turn the mixer on. I bent it a little bit and it worked. I had to fix a brand new speed plate! Well, it was easier than sending it back for yet another one. Everything seemed to be working well at first (normal sounds) and after repeated testing its now making a kind of low level "uuuuuuum" sound on low speeds in the gear box. Doesn't make the sound on high speeds; it sounds great. I checked power consumption and it's using a little more power since the regreasing (around a 100 watts at speed 10, but still within spec's at 135 Watts max.). Not sure what the noise is, but it is working fine, just some noise. Any thoughts? I also checked the bowl height and that was okay. It passed the dime test. I am getting a very, very slight bumping to the side when the mixer is on higher speeds. Don't think it would hit if something was being mixed in it. It is perfectly quiet on the stir speed. Is that normal or should it be perfectly quiet when nothing is in the bowl on high speeds? Anyway, never thought I'd spend this much time on this.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому +1

      Wow that machine has really given you a workout! The switches on the new plates do seem a bit chinsy, wouldn't surprise me if it got bent a bit on the assembly line or when packing it up. The noise I don't know, but its possible there is a little flex on high speed from the centrifugal force causing the bump? I don't usually have the bowl with the machines, but haven't heard one bumping the side of bowl myself, others have mentioned it though . Someone had said they loosened and retightened the screws holding the motor to the base and it stopped. Must be a really tight clearance between bowl and beater.
      Nice job!!! :D

    • @audiophileman7047
      @audiophileman7047 6 років тому +1

      I've been out of the loop for a while; I was really busy earlier this week. Yes, it's been a "work out"! When I was hammering the pin out of the lift arm, I noticed that the spring that holds the bowl in came loose. I had to re-tighten it. Kitchenaid said that bumping on the sides is caused by a bowl not properly snapped in. The service manual said that if the guides that hold the bowl are worn then it can cause bumping on the side. I'll have to check those things in time. My wife is using the dough hook and it has plenty of clearance from the bowl's sides. Yesterday she made her first loaf of bread with the mixer. It came out really good. The texture is nice and the interior of the bread has a nice density. It's one of the best loaves of bread she has ever made. Everything mixed so much better than her bread machine. Tomorrow she will make pizza dough. I will watch the process, because she said that she heard noise in the gear box. Her bread is made with her own half whole grain flour blend, and bread dough is a heavier task for the mixer. I heard that on heavier loads it's not unusual for the mixer to make a clicking noise. I'll see how it is with the pizza dough. The other running noise the machine is making is normal. Kitchenaid says that machines of the same model can sound different. It probably also sounds different because the grease is new (thinner than the 38 year old thickened, partially solidified grease), and I've changed some parts. According to Kitchenaid, as long as there isn't any screeching, squeling, grinding, or knocking, then everything should be fine. She said that the case heated up a bit after she ran the bread dough for about 15 or 20 minutes. That should be normal too. Thanks for your kind comment about how it turned out. I'll do some more checking and report back when I get a chance. Thanks again for all your advice and encouragement, Rick! Now it's time to enjoy the fruits of my labor and sink my teeth into some great pizza. Can't wait to see how pizza dough comes out in the mixer. By the way, my wife said that she uses spelt flour in her dough. She showed me a container of it; she likes to buy Bob's Red Mill spelt flour. I didn't realize it, because it isn't the only ingredient and not the main one. It's a part of her whole grain blend that makes her bread so delicious. I really look forward to some more great baked goods. Christmas cookies should be even better this year! Cheers, man!!

      Thats awesome man, and Im glad you found out some info that makes you feel better about the machine. If you think about it, anything with moving parts and gears is bound to make noises.
      For Spelt flour Bobs Red Mill is the kind we buy, since our local grocery store stocks it. I think adding it in to a blend is perfect, since it also has its own flavor and will add to the flavor of the end product.

    Hey you're working on "my" machine ;-) I see you aren't a KA user the way you took the bowl off, hahaha...
    Surprising to see how many of these plastic lift arm levers break... Definitely should have been made of metal...
    One thing I really like about this generation of KAs is the robustness of the base and pedestal - my 6000 HD has a much thinner and weaker support system, which I reinforced tapping into the casing to extend the thread by 50% to resist this model's much higher torque, after learning of heads coming loose...
    My K5SS also has stains underneath on the finish like this one has - Any ideas how I could get them clean besides stripping and powder coating? I tried using a buffing wheel with polishing compound but got nowhere...
    I like the planetary counterweight on these old machines - the 6000 HD doesn't have it even thogh it has a socket for it - you'd imagine getting the machine to run smoother would be better... Or is that an EPA thing because of the toxicity of lead?
    It's hard to understand why people don't replace grease when they service these things. They change oil in the car engines, why would they think that grease doesn't need replacement over time? Perhaps the service person didn't have food grade and was afraid to use standard grease?
    It never ceases to amaze me how nice you make these machines turn out... It's definitely your special talent, I can fix things, but cost effectively? Not! You made it look so good I've decided I'd take the old girl out today and make a batch of dough instead of with the 6000 HD :-)

      How do you take the bowl off, I was sure I was doing it wrong, I cant imagine it being as difficult as that! Help me out here for the next one :)
      As far as the counterweights, I am not sure why they no longer use them, the could use any number of materials to counterbalance the planetary other than lead, but seem to just skip that step all together now.

      Hi Rick, I will answer this, according to KitchenAid Instructions you lift the front of the bowl up and off the bowl studs first to release it and then pull it out; it seems kind of brutal to do this and I have to kind of force myself to do this on a vintage machine; having a Pro 600 I bought new has helped me to do this as I do not feel at all guilty about really using that machine. A funny thin is I use a metal KitchenAid meat grinder a lot and all my vintage K.A. mixers will power it with power to spare, even the K.A. 3b, The pro 600 not so much.
      Have a great day Rick, Brett

      Brett Schieve I feel sorry about your 600... It's probably the worst model they ever made, with its loud motor, plastic transmission housing prone to cracking and its 'metal' worm gear that wears out faster than any nylon gear on older models... If you never took a look at the transmission housing, do yourself a favor and take a look and replace it if it's plastic, the aftermarket housings are metal and don't suffer from this problem.

      @brettster3331 6 років тому +1

      Hi JohnnyJim J,
      I do have the metal transmission housing and I do agree this is not a good model mixer, I only paid $ 209.00 for it a few years ago as I wanted to try a new bowl lift machine and I knew then to check the transmission cover. I hate the noise it makes and I can tell the steel or iron the gears are made from are not up to the old standards of tempering and quality. If it was my only mixer I would find something else, but I have about twenty to choose from, most vintage, lots of different makes. Brett

    Finally got a chance to work on my K5SS today. I had exactly the same problem with the speed control plate. I decided to replace the governor and the speed control plate. I got everything on, but 3/8" inch was too close to make it stir, so I had to move the low speed adjusting screws out to 9/16" (little over a half inch, so about another 1/8" more than the factory setting). At first I thought the governor wasn't all the way on, but I made sure it was in and felt the small pin click in. Is that much increase in adjustment common? I think the new governor sticks out a little further than the old one. Got everything adjusted and then when I went to attach the red wire with the white stripe, I saw the plate move, like the rivet holding it was gone. What the hell?!. I took the whole thing off and found the plastic housing piece was cracked all the way through! There's nothing I did to cause that. It was defective. Just shipped it back and ordered a replacement. Working on this mixer has been a wild ride for sure!

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому +1

      Wow, it does sound like it has been a problem child for sure! I think the 3/8 measurement is a starting point, that you can adjust the speed from there in or out. That sucks about the plate being cracked, I guess quality control is not where it should be if they let parts like that out. If your worried about the distance and the governor doesn't lok quite right, pop it off and on again to make sure it is seated. I think they are all the same and should sit on the shaft the same. Sounds like you are almost done with it though!!

    • @audiophileman7047
      @audiophileman7047 6 років тому +1

      Yes, I'm just about there. The crack in the new speed control plate was like a hairline, so I could see how it might slip through. If you pushed on it like when inserting a wire lead, you could then see it move. I had to move it when I had it off to find the crack. The old one has more copper in the plate and heavier plastic; I wish I could rehab that one, because it looks good. Like yours, it didn't hold the contacts at lower speeds. I wonder if I could bend it back. Probably not worth the time and trouble, but I may try it some day. I'm sure the governor is on. Per the service manual, I even tapped on it gently with a mallet and 3/8" nut driver. Also felt the click. Pulled on it, and it doesn't come off. It's on. Part spec change to save money may have resulted in this extra distance. Anyway, I hope to have it done next weekend.

I have tried to bend an older plate back to work properly but could never get it to work right, and I did notice you can feel a difference in the older vs newer when you hold them too.. I guess on the bright side, the parts are dirt cheap now, but doesn't make up for the frustration of having to order another and wait for it to be delivered.

      Though it's frustrating, there is a bright spot to all of this. I'm learning a lot about working on the K5SS. If I have problems with other parts, I'll know how to remove these parts to get to others and take the case off. I'll tell you that getting the gear case back on after the greasing wasn't that easy. I didn't expect it to be that difficult, but now I know how to do it and what to expect. Even with the cracked speed control plate, I had it running as well as the one you restored in this video. Once I get the new, sound speed plate installed, everything should be just fine. Once I get it done, maybe I'll ask my wife to mix up some pizza dough and make one of her fabulous homemade pizzas. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. :-)

      You will also be able to take apart any other KA as well! The gear case will either fight you or pop right together. If it starts to fight, I always back off a bit, and try again. One part slightly out of alignment will make it a chore sometimes. You will notice on some I use a screwdriver to turn the main shaft to help things line up too. I found my first KA pretty intimidating believe it or not, but after the 2nd or 3rd, they are actually far easier than many of the other models, as far as assembly. Always despise having to degrease them though lol. That pizza sounds awesome, Enjoy!!!

    I was watching this video to get a better idea on how to install the governor assembly. It looks like you're able to remove it and install it with your hand. Another video I saw has the guy removing the it with a pair of needle nose pliers, and he installs it by using a nut driver to tap it in with a hammer. Getting it off probably won't be too hard; it looks like wiggle and pull. When installing a new one, how do you know it's in place properly? Does it snap in? Would appreciate your advice one more.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666

      Most times I can pull them off by hand, occasionally you will need 2 scewdrivers to pry evenly on both sides to pop it off. Should pull straight off. When you put it back on, it will slip on , then with some pressure it will pop on and you will feel it engage. When you take it off, look inside, you will see the slot that engages the pin on the shaft. You need to be sure it is fully seated, but I would never suggest beating it on, it should just push on with hand pressure.

      Thanks for the further info, Rick. Was just thinkin' that it would be cool if you made a second part to this K5SS restoration for the re-installation of everything rather than running it at high speed for the re-installation here. Don't know if you have time to do that or if you care to do that, but it would be nice.

      I try to keep the videos as short as I can, they are pretty long sometimes and the longer the video the more time I spend editing, and waiting for it to process, than longer to upload. Right now a 30 minute video takes all day just to upload so I try to save time when I can. I will see what I can do on the next Kitchenaid though. Sometimes there is as much time into the video as there is in some of the machines lol

      All right, Rick, I understand. Lots to do and never enough time; we all seem to have that problem. If you decide to do the rebuild part on another KA machine, then I hope you do it on a K5SS.

      I believe they began production of the SS models in the early 80's. Unfortunately they cant be dated by serial number. There are some websites I have come across devoted to kitchenaids, maybe they have some more info on dating a SS machine.

    Bummer, I worked on my K5SS today. Everything was going well on a re-grease job. Then I decided to wax the arm that lifts the bowl. When driving out the pin to release it, the arm lift part broke. It was made of metal, not the typical plastic. I would have liked to have kept that part metal. Can't find any metal ones. Bought a plastic one, since that seems to be the quickest fix. Didn't think I'd have a problem; it must have been my lucky day. Maybe I should have just sprayed some lube on there.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому +1

      Oh nooo that is a bummer... its a K5SS with a metal lever on the lift arm? Its possible it was really brittle, maybe plastic is underrated, I don't know. Sorry to hear that :( Tomorrow is Friday, maybe you will have a better day

    • @audiophileman7047

      It's okay, Rick. The new part is on the way. The old part was metal, but it looked like pot metal, nothing really great. I'll get it done next week after the part arrives. Sure was a job getting all that grease out, but it seems to run smoother. The old grease was starting to get thick and in some spots it had dried out or solidified. It was time to change it. I'm getting bit of noise in the motor on the stir and 2 speeds. It didn't really do that until I tapped the drip ring in place. Hope I didn't shake something up.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому +1

      oh ok, was probably not even as durable as the plastic then. As far as the noise, can you tell where it is coming from? Usually there is not much to move around once together.
      Yea the grease in them is a chore to clean out, and doesn't really respond to typical degreasers.

    • @audiophileman7047
      @audiophileman7047 6 років тому +1

      It sounds like the noise is coming from the area where the motor is or the back of the mixer. The gear box is pretty quiet; I have to put my ear on the mixer to hear anything there. I checked the service manual troubleshooting section, and it says something about connections being loose on the control unit when the mixer is noisy at low speeds. I wonder if my tapping on the drip ring caused something to come loose. I was also running the mixer in a hot garage. It seemed like everything was warming up on the motor end, but it didn't get hot. The mixer sounds okay on speeds from 4 on up to 10, what you would expect. Stir sounds okay when first turned on and it gets louder on 2. I'm not the original owner of this machine. I can't say that I know what it sounds like when it was new. I'll listen to your video again when you ran yours up.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому +1

      I wonder if it is the flyweight assembly, I noticed that sometimes you can hear them, especially at lower speeds, makes a weird noise, like its loose or something. If I pop it off and push it back on it usually quiets it. Could be something to check.

    I thought I found someone that knows what he's doing to restore my girl I call Ole Granny. I bought her new just after my first son was born. One owner mixer. You quit restoring them. :( I bought her sometime after my first son was born in 1982 and sometime before my second son in 1986.. She turns on and runs (no noise) but I won't anymore and haven't for a while because she is doing the same as this one. No, she has never been serviced. The grease needs redone, cleaned etc. My band that says Hobart is fading and a few spots missing. Is there any way to get a replacement band or a better one with her Hobart etc on it or repainted? I don't want the white mixer repainted. I put every scratch etc on her and every one is a memory. :) Besides my son says no. lol

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666

      Yea that's tricky, I make sure I have something light behind it so I can see through the hole, then pop the lever in and move it until the holes all line up then push the pin in to get it started.

      Several tabs open got me confused lol. Sorry about that! I assume your referring to the lift arm? You have to work it a bit, but not too bad to line up. You need to get a couple fingers on the lever assembly to hold it towards the front so the screws will reach, and slide the bowl holder assembly up and down until you see the screw holes in the lever assembly. I am terrible at explaining things, I hope this makes sense :)

    On my K5SS there's no adjusting screw to adjust the bowl height to 1/16" above the bowl when the beater is installed. If you need to adjust the bowl height, the service manual says to tap on the "yoke arm" with a mallet. Would someone please tell me if the yoke arm is the piece where the bowl sits? Thanks!

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому +1

      I saw that, I assumed it was that piece, but I couldn't figure out how that would make an adjustment unless you tap it hard enough to bend the tab it attaches to on the lifting assembly slightly. Hopefully someone will explain it , I have never done it.

    • @audiophileman7047
      @audiophileman7047 6 років тому +1

      Rick: Yeah, I'm little reluctant to try it. As I've found out, It seems like "tapping" on these mixers can cause other problems. I'm thinking the same thing. It must bend the tab a little. Doesn't need to go up or down much, so it'll probably work. Maybe it would just be better to push on it with both hands rather than hitting on it with a mallet. If anyone can explain it, I'd appreciate it and thanks for your thoughts.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому

      Brute force does seem a bit extreme lol, maybe as you said some hand pressure. I did have to adjust one by turning the nut below the spring on the bottom of the lift arm assembly, but it is a pain to get to, and it is a castellated nut with a cotter pin. Look forward to what someone else will explain also!
