    Check out our FREE Money Saving Garden Guide: gardenerthumb.com/free-garden...
    Thinning carrots is the process of removing some of your carrots plants out. The carrots may be crowded as it is common with them because the seeds are really tiny and sometimes get broadcast too much together.. Learning how to thin carrots will ensure that your carrots can grow to full maturity.
    Here are the 2 methods of thinning carrots:
    1. You can use scissors to snip the carrots stalks at the base. Just be careful not to cut too many carrot plants.
    2. You can also transplant your carrot plant. This helps you move them around to fill out spaces in your container, pot or garden. This is especially helpful if you want to move some carrots plants to another container or spot in your garden.
    We also go over some other general tips in the video that will help to prepare you to thin carrots.

    I planted carrot seeds too close together in Michigan last fall, they started to come up then winter came. They started growing this spring but are very very close together. It is now April 21 and after seeing your video I’m going to thin and replant them as shown in your video, the plants are more mature than the ones in your video. I’ll see if they survive the transplant.

    • @GreenThumbGardener
      @GreenThumbGardener  4 роки тому

      Yeah they should work if they re slightly bigger than the ones in the video. I never tried with really larger plants, but you could try on a few. Sometimes the green plant may droop, but should recover

    If you were transplanting from containers to garden would you just do same as second method? thanks for the paintbrush tip. Also been told not to use basi watering can after planting seeds out as can move them around under the soil as seeds are small and light.

  • @you1jay

    I used to follow this method for years and I hated it. I had seen videos of people making seed tape using toilet tissue roll, I always thought that is more work. I finally tried that method this year, I could not believe how less effort and clean job that is. Never going back to the old method of thinning again. Not to mention it takes much less seeds and there is no waste or killing of seedlings! The carrots came out beautifully, all evenly spaced. You may want to try that next time, it is very simple. There are many videos on UA-cam on how to make seed tape using toilet rolls. Check those out.

      I started that a few years ago and so glad I did. I got a 4 roll of cheap toilet paper and use it for any small seed like carrots that are hard to space. I rolled the tape I made up and clipped off what I needed for my grow bags and some 5 gal containers. It's a life changer.

    • @GreenThumbGardener
      @GreenThumbGardener  9 місяців тому

      👋 Hi Laraine! Thanks for watching our videos. To answer your question, it really depends on the type of vegetable you are growing and its growth habit. Some plants grow better if they are spaced out while others can grow in a cluster. For example, lettuce can be grown in a cluster and harvested individually. However, plants like tomatoes need space to grow and should be spaced out. 💚🌱 Hope this helps!

    Thanks for making this video. I planted a load of carrot in 2 big pots and a lot more came up than I thought. I was about to thin them and just throw them out as I always heard it was impossible to move carrots. Im going to give moving them a go as there is some space to try that. Why is it so often you hear people say you cant move them, but then you make it seem easy? Is it certain types?

    • @GreenThumbGardener
      @GreenThumbGardener  4 роки тому +1

      Some plants don't do well with transplanting..fortunately, carrots have a small window where they seem ok..Any other plants you have doing well now?

    • @Ironbuket
      @Ironbuket 4 роки тому +2

      @@GreenThumbGardener Just FYI, I had mixed results with this. Probably about 30% of the ones I tried to move had the root break off when I tried to get them out. Some had really deep extremely thin and fragile roots which I had to really dig down to release them so they didnt break. Although overall I would say it worked OK, I dont really think it is worth it as working on my pot which was probably about double the size of the one in this video it took me nearly an hour. It is very difficult work, both getting the root out intact and also trying to get a root 2-3 inches long down a tiny hole and keeping that straight. Perhaps mine are too old and I should have done it earlier. I think in the future I will go with advice Ive seen in a few other videos which is a much better use of your time: Plant the seeds individually at the start rather than waste hours messing around with thinning after. Combining that with pregermination of the seeds in water and you dont have to touch them at all until harvest.

      👋 Hi Laraine, it happens to the best of us! When planting tiny seeds, it's important to remember that less is often more. Next time, try gently spreading them out or mixing them with a little bit of sand or soil to help with even distribution. 🌱🌿 Happy gardening!
