- Thin You Carrot Rows For Maximum Yield! Carrots are one of the best root crops to grow in the backyard. They are easy to grow, easy to harvest, and fun to eat! Kids love 'em, especially first-time veggie eaters!
But Carrots need to be thinned to within no closer than 1 inch from each other to achieve maximum production. Thinning usually starts when the plants reach about 3-4 inches in height. Thinning is easy, you just pull out the plants you want to discard....but in this video, we look at three different strategies for thinning, each with their own benefits!

This is the first year I’ve had a garden that actually took! I didn’t thin my carrots, but I see by your third method that now is the perfect time. So far I just pull one out to take a look, wipe the dirt off my bite-size carrot and then pop it in my mouth.
I tried the last method and it worked great! I have an early harvest of carrots and they are delicious.

I've never planted carrots before and the tops have grown like CRAAAAAZY! When you pulled the first baby carrot I said outloud "OMG IT'S SO CUTE" and got a little choked up, not gonna lie haha

Yep couldn’t agree more! Pulling the larger baby carrots is the way to go! My daughter (5) does it for me for free because she loves to eat baby carrots and dirt.🤣😂 but really, who doesn’t love those smaller carrots ?!. Usually as the row gets more thinned out we leave some carrots to fully develop and that’s equally Christmas like.
Ha a ha! Soooooo much dirt eaten as a kid because of carrots! Its because they taste like candy! That's so awesome Derek, how long have you had a row go for? My spring ones go for about 6-7 weeks....but the fall ones...as everything slows down, with this method can go nearly 3 months until its all harvested! Cool stuff!
The Ripe Tomato Farms I wish I had that kind of growing season! We are in southern Alberta,my spring sown crop of carrots lasts around 6 weeks,or so before they’re gone. but I also plant some to overlap which can get us into September. I suppose I should start recording when I plant and how long my harvests go on for,but that seems like work. Lol People have said I have the attention span of a goldfish at times so maybe I’m just a work in progress 🤔. I’ve had mixed results with the second crops I plant for the late summer/fall but I always give it a go because sometimes it works out great and Sometimes the heat is just too much.🤷🏻♂️. It’s a challenging area to grow a garden because it can get so very hot and then it’s winter. 😂
@@derekcox6531 Yeah man, such a small window to make things happen...I hear ya. You want to get those 2nd crops...but the summer is so damn hot for germination and once fall comes...forgetaboutit! LOL. I feel ya man, different ball game out in the prairies for sure.

Right Starla? Its pretty cool....mostly because of no waste, and also because for one sowing, you get a continuous harvest for over a month instead of a million carrots all at once!
Love your video. When you thin out the carrots can you replant those somewhere else instead of throwing them away?
Hey Nam, I tried at least 4 different times..and they just never took. I will try ONCE more and then write it off as a firm no...LOL!
I've been successful at doing it. You need to keep them watered really good until they catch. Not all will survive but a good bit will. The younger you catch the shoots the higher the success rate. As well you should replant them the same day you thin them. Good luck !
I definitely like the 3rd method..lol. Can the same be said about onions as well? Thin what you need and eventually it will give the other plants room to grow larger?
So you thro the ones you pulled you throw away, can I not put them in again in spacious ground

It's pretty slick Dave. No wastage and instead of a thousand Carrots at once, you get fresh Carrots over the course of 6-10 weeks! Amazing. Turns them into almost ever-bearing, ha ha!

Curious. Have you sown carrots in pots with other plants. Maybe tomatoes ?
What do you do with all the carrots you took out ? Could you replant them ?
I think it is better to mix with sand before you saw, so that you don't waste seeds.

I tried to grow carrots and radishes last Fall. However, the seedlings did not survive the first frost that happened at the end of September. Everything I have read about planting carrots and radishes tells me that they are cool weather vegetables and would do better in the Spring and in the Fall. I started my containers the first week of June; so, I was too late for Spring, last year. It stayed too hot all the way through to about mid-September. Do you know of any varieties that are heat tolerant?
Hey Donna, there are DEFINITELY more heat tolerant varieties.... The key though with carrots is that you want that taproot to mature in cool weather (so all the sugars get sent to it), but that's doesn't mean it gets planted in cool weather or can't be grown in the summer. For the fall pickings, I would plant in August....This means I usually have two carrot plantings a year.....March and August....with no Harvesting in July, August, or September. That way I avoid the hot months and bitter carrots! Cheers Donna!
Method #4) Using scissors, snip the green tops off the runts. Method #5) Remove some carrot seedlings and replant elsewhere.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thanks for writing. I recently watched a credible video of a gardener who transplants young carrot seedlings. I tried that approach last week and I'll let you know if I have success. I removed each baby carefully and took great care to create a deep, thin hole for each long, skinny carrot transplant, filling it with good-quality, crumbly soil then watering it gently (and appreciating Mother Natures rains). Of course, I've got to keep all of these young carrots moist in the coming month. It's an experiment.
I had planted only a few little finger carrots and the carrots are able to harvest now.
1) What will happen if I don't want to harvest it?Will it continue growing until produce seed then die?
2)when the carrot is ready to harvest, is it possible to replant it somewhere else instead of eating it? (just curious...
Yes, carrots can be left and will eventually flower and go to seed the next season. Once you dig it up, it's nearly impossible to get it growing again elsewhere

Raw, whole....or whole, quick fried in stir fry. The tops can be used to bulk up pesto sauces as well!

One distraction, though: The constant "upswing" of your tone of voice at the end of so many sentences (a common mistake made by many today) is hard to listen to for very long. It's like hearing you ask a question in almost every sentence. Please forgive any affront. None is intended. The rest of it was worth sticking it out.
