The casting and machining of that thing is very impressive.

The sound of a Merlin always brings a smile to my face. Just beautiful. Thanks!

Especially a flat chat run a couple of hundred feet above an airfield.

Peter I think it grossly unfair that after all the static runs you have done downwind of the prop you still have more hair than me.....

@@piersdowell832 It’s called prop wash, but in fact it contains quite a bit of used engine oil, which makes my hair grow😉

@@FlightEngineering1 i've discovered this remedy far too late.

Also inside the supercharger and on the elbow in various places are caps with 4 small holes… are these just threaded bungs plugging oil drillings?

I think. Threaded bungs for the breather tubes ? . The holes are for loosening and tightening.

Great sound. A few questions. How much fuel did that little run cost you? (us gallons) Second, why did u have the prop feathered? What valve were u messing with down by the frame? Last one, what is better. A supercharged engine a turbo charged engine?

I realise being fitted toan aircraft they would not want the compressor housing to leak but I wonder if it would not have been lighter and just as secure to have made the housing flanges thicker, rather than use so many nuts and bolts.

You didn’t just test run it out the front of the garage 😂

That’s a huge amount of bolts and nuts .. imagine when they didn’t have cordless drills in the 1940s

The last time I saw so many nuts and bolts in such a small area was when my neighbour bought his Mrs a top of the range chastity belt... I could never understand why he bothered.

That localized wear area on the shaft nut could be because the pressure distribution varies around the volute. As the volute cross section area increases, the air velocity decreases and the pressure increases. This puts a constant radial side load on the impeller.

Interesting to see the prop feathering during the test run
