  • Whilst his physical form slumbers within stasis, the spirit of the Fell-Handed does not rest, but instead wages an eternal war against the daemonic legions of the Chaos Gods. But just how did Bjorn manage to become the spiritual defender of Fenris?

    Seeing as all the primarchs were psykers to varying degrees, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to think that Leman Russ had instilled Bjorn with a little bit of his psychic power in order to lead and protect Vlka Fenryka.

      also makes you think maybe thats why he left Bjorn behind in the first place, that he recognised the latent abilities of Bjorn and boosted them with a little of his own power before setting off in his hunt into the warp?

    • @mobbofmobs8937
      @mobbofmobs8937 3 роки тому +6

      I know that it's not canon but I think that the primarchs were originally mean to mimic the winds of magic from fantasy. That would most likely make Leman the primarch of the winds of the beast. This is because of the mentality of each type of magic seeing each takes completely different personalities. Seeing as though the wind of the beast is mostly buffing magic maybe in the current cannon he still has some connection? Also seeing as someone will mention the twins ( triplets) they are probably meant to be more of a dark magic inspired.

    I love the fact Bjorn has wolf pelts on his dreadnaught - this means every century or so a Space Wolf has to wander off into the Fenris wilds to bag a wolf to replace the pelt that's starting to disintergrate due to age. Bonus points if you can find a similar wolf and replace it before Bjorn wakes up so he never notices.
    If course, Bjorn notices, but he knows his fellow Space Wolves mean well trying to respect his achievements and doesn't mention it.

    • @shrubby-ov4yw
      @shrubby-ov4yw 3 роки тому +31

      Actually the pelts are doused and dried in a promethium-ichor bath similar to what they seal the barrels of mjoud with. It permanently seals the wolf pelts against rotting. They can still be damaged though. Its actually mentioned in the ragnar blackmane books.

      The best interpretation of the wolves I've ever heard was by a World Eaters Dreadnought describing Russ in Betrayer, by ADB:
      “Russ bled authority without effort, and without the need for posture or pretence. In all ways, he should have been a barbarian - from the ragged blond hair to the frost-weathered skin that aged him far past his years. And yet, he inspired no mockery. He made barbarism a controlled trait, something noble to be understood and mastered, not a state of primitive regression. Leman Russ was the dynamism of a life free from civilisation’s shackles. He was strength and purpose and heart, where all else was grey with the promise of inevitable stagnancy.
      He wasn’t a wolf because of how he fought and howled and bunched his men into packs. He was a wolf because of how he lived, forever echoing the vitality and honesty of the wildness at the heart of all life. It was said in smiling whispers that VI Legion genetic coding was tainted by canine blood. Lhorke believed it. Seeing Leman Russ made him yearn to breathe again, and feel anything beyond the cramped, cold-milk discomfort of his amniotic womb-tomb. Never had he felt more dead - not before, and not since.”

    The fact that he was singled out by Russ says volumes. He knew of Bjorn’s connection to Fenris, he knew no other would be able to defend it as well as any other in his Wolf Guard. But the way he did it was so stark and sudden that it too Bjorn aback and had the feelings of doubt and failure thrust upon him. In the Parting of Ways Bjorn remembered how it happened, “He said he always felt a strange fate for me, the end of which he could not see so he kept me close as if he might be able to understand it.” But when Russ left he turned to Bjorn and simply said “Not you!” And the just left.

      40K Theories it's funny that you mention fenrisians fear psykers because the space wolves do have them, I have read stories of wolf priests who use their psychic powers to inscribe weapons and armor with fenrysian runes in order to boost their stats.
      On a more important note After following your twitter posts for the last few weeks I think you should take a vacation for a while and get plenty of rest, even inquisitors and techpriests need rest, and think of it as giving the machine spirit in your computer time to rest

    • @40KTheories
      @40KTheories  3 роки тому +10

      Technically I said they view Psykers with contempt, rather than fearing them :P
      And yes, Rune Priests are Psykers, but they claim they draw their powers from the "mystic power of Fenris" as opposed to the warp (even though they do indeed draw upon the warp in some way, since if I recall correctly, the novel Wolfsbane pretty much outright confirmed the spirits of Fenris are themselves warp entities.)
      And honestly, I'd love a vacation if I could afford to take the time off lol.

    Bjorn is a true son of Fenris. Earned his name after losing his arm and having lost his battle-brothers but wore the title of Fell-Handed proudly, served the Wolf King by his side up until the end of the Horus Hersey, became the first Great Wolf of the Space Wolves when Leman left with his wolf guard, brokered a peace negotiation with the Inquisition who were close to besieging Fenris in the Months of Shame, following the First War of Armageddon, the sterilization and internment into work camps until death of Armageddons' populace, even managing to win the respect of the Inquisition and the Grey Knights who feel compelled to kneel before him just for having walked alongside the Emperor of Mankind himself. The only reason he ever preferred to be a lone warrior was he had a strong bond with his brothers who died while he was the sole survivor. While he may have preferred to be a loner, he still served and fought along side his gene-father. But to go so deep into why he's in an eternal sleep, saying that Bjorn has psychic potential and his spirit battle daemons in the warp justifies that Bjorn is one of if not arguably the greatest space marine in the Imperium.

    Throne of Terra Philosoraptor, if we examine the Books Blood of Asaheim and Stormcaller we have a potential explanation of what Bjorn actually was. While it is true that the Rune Priests are able to detect Malificarum quite effectively, as well as those who can harness the elements, there are cases where the warriors that go through the trials are actually latent psykers or simply posses abilities that the Rout could not effectively recognize.
    In the case of Bjorn and what we saw in Wolfsbane along with the Siege of Fenris, it is likely that he was a latent psyker, ten thousand years of victory upon victory have likely continued to grant the Fell-Handed a continued growth in terms of his might, effectively creating him into a living totem for the Vlka Fenryka, a Bear that dreamed it was a man and a man that dreamed it was a wolf.

    "You... you walked in the age of the emperor?"
    Bjorne made the gear-grinding chuckle again.
    "Walked, ran, pissed and killed. I did it all. I met the allfather, you know. Fought at his side more than once. I do believe he liked me."
    Kysnaros slowly, slowly went to his knees.
    "Oh, for... not you as well."
    If the space wolves weren't so opposed to outsiders the fang would very likely become another site for pilgrims wishing to meet the man who has stood in the presence of the emperor himself.
    Surprisingly the wolves do have psykers but not in the same way as other chapters (I assume) the wolf priests from what I have read use their psychic powers to inscribe fenrisian runes onto weapons and armor, basically boosting its stats

    It might be for it being so ancient that when it isn't running he really is on the line of death and life, and this is his soul basically passing on. When he is up it jolts him to life again. Most likely over time he gained more power from the others believing in him.

  • @Irregular42

    I always interpreted this sort of thing as a natural extension of how psykers and souls work. Since every being with a soul is some level of psyker (though most are *incredibly* weak), everyone has a little bit of power that can be cultivated, and psykers get stronger over time. Given Bjorn's sheer age and experience, plus the serious level of psychic phenomenon inherent to Fenris, him developing psychic abilities is nearly inevitable.

    My theory? Much like the emperor, he's been essentially worshipped for ten thousand years I'll be at on a smaller scale. I think he's not entirely mortal anymore.
    The Space Wolves tend to be the most spiritual of all the Loyalists Marines. They idolized and Revere him even in the books you mentioned which I happen to have. He's able to do things in a Dreadnought that other people can't pull off. This makes me think that the Dreadnought and him have merged and due to the focus of all of Fenris and the Space Wolves idolizing him, he has become a sort of low-key godling

  • @hinty6424
    @hinty6424 3 роки тому +3

    Given the whole "Dreadnoughts suppress psychic powers" thing, and there being no evidence the Space Wolves are exceptions I'd disagree with the hidden psyker theory.
    Instead I think the answer is in the way the warp responds to belief. The people of Fenris are deeply spiritual, with strong beliefs related to spirits, and a great deal of reverence for their ancestors. Given this, and the fact that Bjorn is seen as the ultimate representation of the defenders of Fenris, the undefeatable last line that will awaken to stop any threat no matter what, I would suggest that what has happened is that this belief has caused that part of his soul which is connected to the warp to echo this, and become the last line of defence against threats on the other side of the veil.

    Something that isn't really noted upon in the video but that seems EXTREMELY important: If Bjorn truly is "fighting" the Chaos gods themselves, this would imply (if he is indeed a psyker) that he possesses a level of power rivalling a Primarch or even the Emperor himself as fighting the actual Chaos gods (if this is indeed what is happening) then the fact he does not lose outright implies massive power.
    It seems strange a random Space Wolf, even an incredibly old one, could just be "lucky" enough to possess this much power so what could this mean? Is it possible that Russ' spirit is within him, increasing his power (and possibly even being the catalyst for his powers in general?) Or, what if he was an actual genetic son of Russ himself? Seems very fitting with the Space Wolf lore to have some illegitimate kids running around, and could also explain his high degree of skill in combat and tactical acumen.

    Bjorn certainly sounds pretty unique. The only other group that would use dreadnoughts in a commanding role are the Grey Knights. And typically it’s their Grandmasters that have been put into those suits. As for his psychic abilities, I think it’s because he’s in a dreadnought that helped him unlock those. With his mind free of stimulus like a sensory deprivation chamber, he could really let him mind wander and use all human’s latent psychic ability to peer into the warp. He is aware, has the mental strength to resist demons, and is at least somewhat psychic, as all humans are.

  • @ryanlanca9927

    The latent psychic ability theory seems the most plausible to me. It's been shown repeatedly that strong-willed individuals can combat psychic powers without being psychic themselves. For instance the Exorcists chapter, through will alone, purges demons from their own body as part of their initiation. Bjorn had one of the strongest wills when he was still just a Space Marine. In Prospero Burns, he's able to combat the main daemon. If at that time he had a latent psychic power, coupled with his strong will this would be a good explanation for why he could fight it where others failed (also the daemon didn't know his true name, I know, but go with me here). It's pretty plausible that after 10,000 years he's either consciously or subconsciously been able to grow this latent power into what he's able to do to defend Fenris. Perhaps even with the secret help of rune priests?

    I read through the comments a bit, and a few ideas I saw kinda make sense. One idea I saw was that perhaps Russ gave him a bit of psychic potential when he left him, which could very well be possible and I wouldn't doubt. But the main one that I had been considering as well is the idea that Bjorn is a bit of a diet on Fenris. It's a wierd topic but according to multiple sources being the battles of the fang new and old, Fenris itself has a spirit as a planet, which is also apparently a source of psychic power to the rune priests. It could potentially be the planet itself giving him the power. This, and then add in the fact that since his internment, there is not a single soul on Fenris that does not know the legend of the Fell-Handed. Just as the orks believe Gork and Mork into existence, just as the eldar do, perhaps it is the Bjorn has been worshipped for so long in the sense of people telling his tale and giving reverence, every single space wolf, every single Fenrisian, and nearly every single space marine in the entirety of the adeptus astartes, he could have a power granted to him by this, making him a pseudo god, not enough to really become anything more than a decently powerful projection, but just enough to grant him the ability to walk the plains of the warp and fight. Maybe it is a mix of all of the above, a small sliver of power granted to him by his father combined with the constant story telling and saga making of Bjorn, and maybe a bit of Fenrisian planet bits thrown in, leads him to his current point, as you said, as the Spiritual Guardian Of Fenris.
