That whole show was incredible especially, “Bleed the Freak” from the same show… it was so insane they even made the live version audio the official Video
I found a quote from Layne about the song: "That was a song about myself and my girlfriend and I wrote it during a time when I was treating her really badly and didn’t know how to break the pattern. It was kind of therapeutic, you know? When you really don’t know how to break a sick pattern, then you write it down and sing it and it kind of breaks the pattern.” - from an interview with Ian McFarlane, 1991"
It's absolutely not about Heroin, it's about Demri a woman so beautiful and sweet she made angels want to hang themselves. Layne had never even tried it at this point.
I remember 1st hearing AIC way back in the day. It was a demo tape that had Man in The Box on it. As soon as I heard it they had me Hooked. Layne Staley is one of the GOATS... From then on Alice jumped to one of my Fave bands of All Tiime!
Hi Nikki, hadn’t heard AIC for ages, this reminds me of how good they used to be! The lyrics of this song tell the story of a man struggling internally with his feelings towards a woman. More specifically it is an open love letter to Demri, expanding on his frustrations with their relationship. It starts out with Layne expressing that from the first day he fell in love with her he tried his best to be exclusive with her but they both seem to struggle with loyalty. The end of this relationship was tragic, Demri died after an overdose of drugs and Layne never got over it and took to drugs which eventually ended his life too. It’s a great song that’s very dark and the music/lyrics are a masterpiece! I really enjoyed your reaction, maybe we can see more of AIC?
To me, this is probably one of the BEST vocal performances by any "ARTIST/ BAND" IF you ever get a chance to listen to the studio recording on FACELIFT, they are nearly identical, but I think this is better than the album
One of the most powerful voices and bands ever!!! Nobody does it better than Layne and AIC but the young female band Plush (who toured with AIC last year) does an incredible cover of Down in a Hole on SiriusXM. Check it out!🤘
@@roockerr89 I've been thinking of checking out of Nirvana lately.. I've heard some of the bigger ones but watching the videos or performances would be new to me.. and also learning more about the lyrics. Kurt seemed like a cool guy.
I'd love to be able to sing like Layne, what a powerhouse..I believe you reviewed the unplugged version of Would Nikki, personally I prefer the original version and official video..Pearl Jam Black is another you need to check out
Great song 🎵 by AIC as usual. Layne wrote this song about his very difficult relationship with Demri. They loved each other but kept on cheating on each other. In the end she died from complications from using heroin. After she died he never got over it. Soon after he spent 6 years in a apartment shooting heroin and coke until it killed him. He made a comment the day before he died that he saw Demri, that she had come to him. Such a sad love story 💔
The guitar player was Jerry Cantrell. The song “rooster“ was written about his father Jerry Cantrell Senior. His nickname was rooster and he served in Vietnam.
The "I want to peel the skin from your face..." lyric means "I want to remember you the way you are now before the relationship with me ruins the person you are now.
Nobody makes music like this these days, That is all Layne, and Jerry Cantrell is the back up vocals and guitar 🎸 player. No "AUTO TUNE," no synthesizers in the vocals.
I’d love to see you react to the band Tool song The Pot. Tool is known for having longer songs with odd time signatures and a huge fan base known as the Tool Army. If you react to Tool I really think you’ll love the music and give your channel a lot of exposure.
Romeo and Juliet is one of the saddest love stories you will read. You've seen a lot of movies/read a lot of books....think of the saddest love story you know. It probably isnt as sad as the story of Layne Staley and Demri Parrott. I dont know if Layne ever actually dated again after Demri died..and he didnt live very long/well after she died.
Great review Nikki. If you like would best than i Would also recommend the song Junkhead that song is also very powerful song he wrote about his addiction. Sure you will like that song too if you like Would.
Peel the skin from you face means see the real person. I’m not sure why nobody gets it. They think it means literally peeling someone’s skin off their face. It’s such a shame.
The song is about a psychopath and his obsession with his girlfriend…sweet little Angel, you should have run…lying, crying, dying to leave…he’s abducted her and won’t let her go….
It’s not about heroin, Skippy, for f*ck sakes. Do your research before you start spouting off stupid shit. Yes the Dirt album delves into that but this is about Demri. “Peel the skin from your face” is not literal - it’s a metaphor for wanting to continue to see her as the beautiful & innocent person she portrayed herself to be. When, in the reality, the ‘real her’ was far from innocent & was not devoted exclusively to him, like she said she was. “I cheated myself, still, you know more”…….he admits he wasn’t faithful (life on the road &/or of a budding rock star) but, he knows she has had many affairs as well. She was the one person that the power to make or break him ……all of us but Skippy, apparently, knows she chose the latter. If she was just a ‘whore’, it wouldn’t hurt so bad…..he could’ve just walked away, but he loved her, deeply. All of that being said - that rocky relationship was the fuel for one of the most perfect & powerful performances from Layne (he has many, but this one is arguably the best). The entire set is an iconic performance from the band which is amazing in itself since they were still so young.
Alice In Chains is the best, the guitarist is Jerry Cantrell the primary songwriter for the band, he’s the GOAT songwriter in my book and Layne one of the best vocalists ever, a truly special duo. All AIC rules, RIP Layne. Definitely check out more AIC, like some unplugged stuff so you get to hear Layne and Jerry sing together which kinda made their signature sound, just don’t do nutshell because that’s really just Layne. Down in a hole or got me wrong or over now are good ones.
That whole show was incredible especially, “Bleed the Freak” from the same show… it was so insane they even made the live version audio the official Video
I always say the same thing, no one reacts to Bleed The Freak from that show and it’s so on point and perfectly done.
My favorite singer of all time literally
Guitar player is Jerry Cantrell. The unsung genius that he is
Absolutely. Layne was the voice but Jerry was the engine behind AIC and a legend in both song writing, guitar and not bad at vocals as well
Jerry the python Cantrell.
You need only look to find the truth
Bahahahhahaha 😂@@alexeilindes7507

So good.
Alice in Chains, live at the Moore Theater performance was/is incredible! All of the songs!
I'll have to check more out soon. His voice just blows me away. 🤩
I love seeing Layne in his prime 🤘
Fkn right. Guy was an absolute force in his prime❤

There was speculation that he administered the heroin with the needle.

Those epic flips don't come free.
This song and the whole album Face-lift put grunge music in the main stream long before pearl jam or nirvana. Rip Staley and Starr
I love this song, but my favorites from the Layne era would be Rooster and Rain When I Die, and from the post-Layne era would be Last of My Kind.
Love this group, but that "I thought I courrrrd" drives me insane. Artistic expression I guess. Still one of my favorites.
GOAT🖤

The best ever!!
Next AIC song to check out is Nutshell. Probably the Unplugged version but the studio is also great. Probably 1 of if not the saddest AIC song.
Don't Follow is the saddest in my opinion but Nutshell is a masterpiece that will still be relevant 1000 years from now.

She was a heroin addict I read and not a good influence..sounds like they had a very toxic relationship
