If your gonna listen to nutshell you gotta listen the album version from jar of flies. Layne did alot better performances than mtv unplugged. Its just romanticised cause he was quite clearly dying. Without context it's not a sterling performance. But as fans we know he was one the greatest of all time, but his addiction wore him out and its shows in unplugged. Saying that I Do LOVE the mtv album, and 'Frogs' captures the whole feel of the album alot better than nutshell. Jar of flies: Nutshell is just perfect.

A little info on fry vocals, since y'all seem to be interested and like them: Fry vocals won't damage your voice if you do them right. It's when you force air through that you end up injuring your vocal chords. It took a lot of regular vocal training for me to unlock my fry, but when it came, it came out of the blue. I didn't even really focus on it in particular. Just started singing songs with the fry in them, and found I could sing/scream along without any strain. There are a lot of vocalists who unlock their fry this way, without specific training (like Tatiana from Jinjer). They just perform enough that it comes in. Main rule of thumb is that it involves no strain or pain. If you feel any at all, stop. There are instructors who teach fry vocals as well. Melissa Cross is a really popular YT vocal coach who is known for this. If you're straining doing screams, it's not the proper method and ya gotta watch out. Corey Taylor from Slipknot uses an improper method of screams (basically just full on yelling) and he's had to tone it down to save his voice. Beastly, but dangerous. It's just one of those techniques that clicks after a while. You can learn it along with regular vocal training, but it's best to get the basics of voice and breath control down first.

This song is just about some girl he dated briefly, it's _not_ about Demri. If I remember correctly, he met Demri around '89 but didn't really start getting close to her until right around the time this was filmed actually. This would be right around the time he first tried dope, though I believe it's before that. But I don't think this song is about _serious_ heartbreak as much as it's just Layne venting lyrically through the eyes of a fictitious stalker/killer. Definitely *NOT* typical Alice In Chains subject matter.

Crazy how guys from that era like Layne Staley (Alice in Chains), Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden and Audioslave) and Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver) all suffered tragic deaths!!! Suicide or overdosed. And there were others from that era as well. Some called it The Grunge Curse.

This is your best reaction to a song yet! I am so enthralled by your reaction and comments. This is one of THE greatest live performances by any band ever. Layne's voice was one in a billion. Most vocal coach reaction channels are floored by this performance - say he does things vocally that defy biological science - stuff that cannot be taught, just pure grit and soulful talent.
Lex picked up on the "blues" vibe. She is SO brilliant in her music ear and analysis. She mentioned Sabbath and made a comparison - that was spot on!!! Chains was heavily inspired by Black Sabbath which in turn had a lot of Blues influences in their melody and bass riffs. Then add the passion and soul tearing emotion from Layne's vocal talent and you can definitely get a blues undertone. Like Brad said, you can feel the pain in his voice. And like Lex said - when that sounds and feels genuine, it makes for the best music.
Alice In Chains is one of my all time fav bands and certainly my fav of the "grunge" bands. They had so many great songs and legendary performances.

Thank you for this! Alice in Chains was one of the most unappreciated bands of the 'grunge' period but (in my opinion) one of the best. Lane spoke from his soul about his life and sadly many parts of his life were dark and sad. He was such a passionate and incredible singer/performer. Even at his worst he would blow you away. Then there's Jerry who is... basically... a guitar God. Please do more.

I agree with Lex the website Genius saying it’s from the perspective of a sociopath is wrong. The band never called themselves sociopaths, the writers at genius did.
It is about an unhealthy relationship. No one should make anyone person there world, but when you’re in love especially in the beginning you feel everything so much.
I was glad genius interpreted the line about peeling her face that way, I knew it wasn’t literal but didn’t understand it, but I like the explanation they came up with. The only time I ever heard of violence from Layne was when he punched a fan who kept punching the other audience members and giving the Nazi salute. You’ve got to love Layne for punching a violent Nazi.

AIC were never 'grunge', something that never really existed anyway, it was just a marketing label. However' AIC were most definitely in the metal camp before the so called grunge term ever surfaced, later they mellowed a bit, more in the hard rock genre. At first every band from Seattle was labled as grunge, hell they even tried to do it to the Melvins, and later just about any guitar/bass/drum rock band got labelled as such.

Never really thought about it before but what Brad was saying about how Layne was treating his mic like his lover reminds me a bit of Jim Morrison too. But yeah the richness of Layne's voice from deep to fry is so damn good. Def recommend checking out more of their stuff for sure! Brad would really like their MTV unplugged set 😉
