Chris Cornell and Layne Staley. The two best voices of that era and also the two saddest stories. They did a song together called "right turn" definitely worth checking out hearing them sing together two powerhouses

It is so interesting to me that some of the best performers are so tormented Layne, Jerry and even Thom Yorke is pretty intense I finally came to the conclusion that my favorite two bands from that era are Alice and Chains and Radiohead even though they sound nothing alike.

one in a billion voice. There's been no one like him from a vocal perspective. Unbelievable talent. The vocal coaches reaction channels are simply beside themselves when they hear this saying he was simply able to do things the human voice is not normally able to do.
Such a sad tragic story. I remember when their first album came out and Man in the Box was popular, I was floored immediately. My girlfriend at the time fell in love with his voice and we listened to them every time we were hanging out together.

The man was known to go from a low registered voice to high pitched in less than a second with out any effort. Its almost like He was bored when he sang live. Thats just how good he was, not much effort needed for him to sing. A natural talent gone to soon.

I adore Laynes voice. I snuck out of my house my husband thought I'd went to work at the hospital. I had to see AIC in person. They saved me. He saved me. I only wanted to die. Couldn't stand this place. They came at a time when the states ppl were so lost and damaged. Nobody could help. Then Korn AIC couple others followed them into whatever they call this genre. It's was ok to be u. Also ok to keep waking up. We lost some on the way but even as Layne struggled with his demons he still told us not to follow. If you simply can't live another moment, please do 1 thing first. Sleep one more time. Don't hurt yourself go to sleep. Let's see what happens. Be brave call anyone. I promise it will be ok. Don't react while you are that upset. Don't make permanent decisions based on temporary feelings. Love u 💓
Thank u guys for the amazing reaction. I miss Layne always will. It's not even my choice of music I like indigenous rap but I use all genre like medicine. Snotty nose rez kids have oh so many amazing songs out right now. If ur lucky enough to catch a show in the next month or so u won't regret that. They're blowing the roof off the place*

I saw AIC in Oct. 91' open for Van Halen on their For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tour at the Capitol Center , Largo MD. They played a 45 min set and there was literally no one in the seats due to buying beers and merch except the first 3 rows of Seattle supporters who followed them from city to city. I was 16 yrs old and it was my first concert. No one knew who these guys were except for the Man in the Box video floating around Mtv at the time. I made my dad sit down to watch them and let me tell you .. Layne Staley absolutely blew me away. The raw power of his voice and the haunting chilling guitar work of Cantrell still resonates in my mind 30 yrs later. Became an instant fan that night and was crushed to hear of his untimely death a decade later. A true loss to the rock and roll community.
I hope things are better with you and I wish you well.

I am so glad that you guys did this one. Shows a Layne at his best before his addiction became out of control. To look at him and to see a more healthy Layne is wonderful. And to see Mike Starr playing bass is amazing. The two of them on stage together was so great, but to know their tragic end is heartbreaking. Mike was the last person known to be with Layne and had stated that Layne needed help, but he made Mike promise not to call 911 and Layne was found dead almost 2 weeks later. He was estimated weight was in the 80"s. Such a sad loss. Mike eventually lost his life as well to addiction. On the MTV Unplugged, Layne was so thin, with those dark circles under his eyes, with that flat affect and almost no teeth. This man was so talented and was such a sad loss to all of us. Please keep going down the Alice in Chains rabbit whole. Rain when I Die is a good one. Thanks for this guys.

He was loved by many and many tried desperately to help him but you can not help someone who does not want help and IMO the demise of his relationship with Demri and here death made him completely let go and he was barely holding on before that

Layne Staley's best friend, Mark Lanegan, is a singer from the Seattle area that is very underrated even though his biggest fans include the likes of Kurt Cobain, members of Soundgarden, Anthony Bourdain etc. His first band, Screaming Trees was a pioneer in the Grunge Era. He also sang on one Queens Of The Stone Age albums. My favorite song of his is "100 Days", but that might not be a good first time hearing song. Maybe check out Night Flight to Kabul or Harborview Hospital. He also has an amazing book of memoirs called, "Sing Backwards and Weep." Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley make many appearances in that book, as they are 2 of his closest friends. Oh! The song "Revival" that he sings with Soulsavers, is pretty bad ass too. He's my top pick to listen to when painting and drawing. -- Also, he did more drugs than Layne & Kurt and ultimately was saved by Courtney Love, after Kurt's death. She got him in a rehab and paid for it.

Back then thaw bands would mingle around with the crowd a little and I only spent a minute around him, but he was genuine and sweet. It’s bittersweet he was so awesome as an artist, but also a kind human that loved deep. He wanted to be a rockstar as an 8 yr old because his father never came home and he thought if he sees me maybe he’ll reconnect. Unfortunately he did and his father was also an addict so then they pretty much used together because Lane had the money. One of the saddest stories in rock ‘n’ roll history ❤❤❤Rip beautiful soul

Which is a pretty huge thing to say, knowing how he sounds on their albums. I had the chance to see AIC live once. They were one of the bands who were opening up for Metallica, this was back in the early 90s....they pulled out. Word was Layne had to check in the rehab that week! They were the only band in the line up besides Metallica that I was really excited about! You can only imagine how disappointed I was. Never got the chance to see them and you can't even imagine how I felt when I found out he passed away.... RIP Layne.

*I feel ya both...going through those years while their records were coming out was incredible. I had all of their albums/CDs, and love each song on them all. I had just turned 28 yrs when their first one came out...and still listen to them nearing 60 yrs now. Hard to believe it is nearing twenty years since Layne's passing...APR 5 2002.*

Alice in Chains has helped me through multiple depressions. Sometimes you have to go through the deepest of pain before you can heal. And I'm so used to suppressing my feelings that I need music like this to get to my deepest feelings.

I luv this so much. It's so dark and moody. And I love seeing Jerry in silhouette next to him, especially towards the end. So haunting!

Have you done Jerry's goodbye to Layne? Black Gives Way To Blue, it's absolutely deep felt from Jerry and it shows. It was a way of saying goodbye so the band could move on. ✌❤

Of course, he could do on stage what he could do in the studio...there was no 'if you can't do it, don't even worry about it, we'll autotune and pull out all of these computer tricks to make it appear that you can do things you can't do'

This makes me cry a little. Having been a fan when Layne was still alive, as you say, watching him dissolve before your eyes in the moment was heart wrenching. We all knew. HE knew. All the reaction channels' first impression of Layne and Alice In Chains seems to be MTV Unplugged "Nutshell", and that just hurts because that's not the Layne I would want to introduce new listeners to. Not that he couldn't sing on that show, but to watch a man close to death and listless...he wasn't always like that. This video here is probably my favorite performance of his. That's how I remember Layne. His voice was so sweet and wicked at the same time. And still unmatched, although lord knows other singers have tried. I feel like he could convince you that he was feeling any lyric under the sun, but he only ever gave his truth, his heart and his soul. Miss him. Thank you for this.
