Same here. You summed up it perfectly as a description of him at this time. I hope he is somehow, some way, watching all of us appreciate his & his band mates' work while he's smiling and being happy & at ease.
just to bad that he is full on Speedball even there..and just sings about this hate love hate love to it. This deep passion makes him that good..but still its sad
Layne was one of those performers that didnt have to "put on an act" for his audience. He was original and true to himself. He put himself out there in the purest form. You gotta love him for it.
I was very fortunate to see Alice in Chains on Oct 17, 1991 at the Capitol Center in Landover Maryland as they opened for Van Halen on the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tour. At the time, the only song they had in the mainstream was Man in the Box. The entire arena was empty as people were buying beers and merch during their 45 min set and luckily I stayed in my seat to listen to them. Everyone of those people didn't realize the future legends they were missing. The band blew me away and Layne was absolutely incredible live. A night I will never forget for as long as I live.
I seen Alice n Chain around this time in Denver. When i saw them, Layne had a cast on his leg and they had a couch on stage for him to sit on although he never used it..
Metal McFly always stay for the opening bands. I've seen so many openers that blew the headliners out of the water it's ridiculous. Alice in chains, guns n roses, and suicidal tendencies to name a few, and I'm not THAT old, I just got started REALLY early thanks to my sister (who IS that old😁).
Layne was an addict for a long time, he was heavy and authentic. He felt that shit and he could make you feel it. Jerry was always the brains that kept it all together.
ktf... all songs about pain... thats correct... but isnt it by far more sad, that so much people feel that pain too and can understand word for word what he was feeling... thats the sad fact...
6:56 "HOLD ON, BRUH! HOLD ON, HOLY SHIT!!" Yeaaaah!! Great reaction, as always you really add new appreciation to material that was already epic and a favorite of mine. Great job, Preston!!
It warms my heart to hear you speak genuinely about Layne. He definitely was a voice of raw, pure emotions. Wish I was old enough to see them back in the 90's.
Man, I’m SOOOOO thankful you are truly feeling AIC. You’re absolutely right. Layne’s power came from all his pain. He was truly a tortured soul. The worst part, for the band, as far as I’m concerned, is that they got very little recognition during the first part of their career. They came from Seattle. The big grunge scene. But they didn’t fit the mold. They don’t fit ANY MOLD. Sound Garden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam. All of them got the recognition. Where as AIC was either to heavy, or just didn’t fit in. Either way, they didn’t really catch on until later. As you can see, Layne put 100% into all his work. It was just to much for him to carry. RIP Layne.
They were just as popular as every grunge band during the 90s. The difference was that Layne made it nearly impossible to tour after the one for Dirt. So that buzz from the live shows wasn't there. I was very happy when they decided to reinvent the band after Layne died. They got to make up for lost time.
To me they were the most popular especially being 13 & hearing Facelift for the 1st time..his voice was mesmerising to me the lyrics.. the sound..so original..so real & timeless 💞
Not sure what you mean about gaining popularity late. They had a huge following from the start. Everybody I knew was a fan of AIC. Dirt reached #6 on the Billboard charts. There have just been way more people born since then to also gain an appreciation for them.
Sadly Mark Lanegan is on that list now. Legendary vocalist and songwriter. Layne and Kurt were both close friends with him. RIP to all these amazing artists and everyone else from that era who is no longer with us.
I don’t know why, but I’ve spent my afternoon watching people react to AIC and in particular, Layne’s legacy. I’ve wiped tears from my eyes today. It warms my heart to see people experience what I feel when I hear their music. And please don’t take this the wrong way, but I especially enjoy seeing black people react to it. Layne and AIC broke through barriers. And hearing him today is hard. We lost a legend and I’m sad we won’t get to hear him any more, yet I feel the pain he felt being alive. It makes me wonder if he had never touched drugs, if he would have been as good as he was. So should I be happy that he chose to? I don’t know. So much emotion. I loved your video and reaction. Thanks!
That was his cross to bare and having carried that cross myself it's a place I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy but great pain inspires the greatest art because it is the one thing we all feel and it touches that part of you that is primal
I thinks it is fair to say that he would never had wrote these great lyrics if he hadn't touched heroin. Became an addict and experienced all the suffering and the pain that comes with it. Despite most people he was at least able to express those feelings in his passion for music. Thanks for that Layne!
I'm really glad the respect shown to this great artist... dude, you reacted way more sincere and respectful than anyone doing alike work on you tube... you gained two thumbs up... you rock man, thank
yeah! she's really good and there is no way to deny how hard she might workout everyday to improve herself, besides that when you watch all the shuffle dancers videos she is way better that those... she moves and swing like no one can do, very athletic and fast, she really got controls of what her body does... mesmerizing!
The look on your face as you were listening was priceless. You can see the emotion and can tell you're really "feeling this shit" - as you say. Love it. 🤘🏼
Best reaction channel on youtube hands down. You have a genuine passion for music that brings a smile to my face. Its so much fun watching you discover music you enjoy, or moves you in some way.
Depends what you like. Chris Cornell has a wider range, but singers like Layne Staley and Maynard Keenan have a more consistent voice when they perform live. I prefer Layne over everyone else from the 90s. I like how his high notes aren’t a falsetto....the top of his range is just as powerful as the bottom. No fluctuation, where as Cornell is sometimes shaky up high. Maynard’s vocal style is a lot like Staley’s in that he doesn’t use falsetto to hit the top of his range; and his range is consistently strong.
@@freeman7079 That is very true. Everyone knows Cornell had a higher range, but Live, is where it's at. And Layne delivered flawlessly everytime. His voice was also alot more powerful, Yes Cornell had a powerful voice too, but high notes tend to sound louder...but if you just listen and compare, very few singers can come close to Layne's vocal power live.
“All his songs are about pain” Yes, and when you take into consideration his heroin addiction and how he died and wasn’t found for days and days as his body decomposed...his lyrics become extremely spooky. They almost feel like a harbinger in retrospect.
its fucking sad. i read somewhere he wasnt found for 2 weeks. 2 WEEKS. he was already decomposing, his mum came to his house and had seen him like that... fucking depressing. R.I.P Layne, you're still missed all these years later.
Ah, this song still gives me chills. So sad I never got to see them live back in the day. Hard for me to listen to these songs these days because it puts you in a different state of mind.
So glad you finally listened to it. It is one of his best performances ever in my opinion!!! His voice holds so much hurt and pain that it makes me sad!! My favorite ever...❤️
Yeah every time I watch it I wish I could've just gave him a hug and thanked him for having the courage to not only go to that place but to bare his soul the way he did had to be emotionally exhausting.
Your reaction to this song is how I feel every time I watch this moment. I enjoyed sharing it with you. You earned my sub, bro. I love Layne, too. And always will.
Hey man. Thanks for this. It really means something for those of us who grew up with this to see someone react to it for the first time with fresh eyes. Thanks for the real feelings and the honesty. It's refreshing.
Yasss best reaction I’ve seen yet on Alice In Chains. This is personally my favorite live performances from when they were at the Moore theater. Have fun at the concert though man🤘🏾 R.i.p Layne Stayley and Mike Starr
This was my favorite live performance, even over the MVP unplugged performances. His voice was sick, his mouth was wide and his EYES WERE OPEN! RIP, Layne. What a tremendous loss.
This is one of the best examples of a singer making everyone one feel what the song means to him and letting them interpret the song for themselves at the same time.
"A true master at his craft" So true and well said. He was one of the best and yet underrated his entire career. He was so good it did him in. He was able to reflect on all the darkness to sing music that perhaps has no emotional rival save a few other big named bands. Thank you.
I was just about to suggest Mad Season and obviously someone always beats me to it lol I will just concur the sentiment....and go further to suggest "Wake Up" off of that Mad Season album. Almost like Layne's cry for help...makes my eyes tear up everytime I hear it.
This brought tears to my eyes. AIC is one of my all time favorites! Thank you for reacting to this song and video! Keep up the good work! You rock! Peace to you! ✌🏻
WOW no quality drop from the studio version, and with this song too? WOw........ Alot of people consider Chris Cornell the gold standard with voice when it comes to "grunge" and Im a fan no doubt, but Layne got him beat IMO.
@@nickjohnson5202 I hear you but I think Layne did overall better songs. My first ever rock cassette I ever bought was Soundgarden's supernatural so Im a fan, but I think overall songs Layne and AIC beats Soundgarden and Audioslave.
This was in my recommendations and it was Alice in Chains so I simply clicked. Glad you truly understand and acknowledge how powerful of a singer Layne was and still is. You have a new sub sir. I've seen many other comments and I have to agree. Please listen or watch Mad Season especially live. During Mad Season you can tell Layne is ina deeper darker place than he was here. Truly a tortured soul that is missed to this day. It always saddened me ever since I saw an interview with Layne's mom where she said that he had all the money in the world to help himself but he always felt he was never worth saving cause he was so deep into all the drugs. Still hurts to here how she held his hand when the PD asked her to come identify the body. We lost Kurt Cobain the same exact day as Layne. Two Legends who still live on and continue to inspire.
You’re a good man King KTF and you have a great ear for music. Happy I stumbled across your channel. You’re also bringing me back to songs I loved in my teens. Keep making videos.
Subscribed purely because of your reaction to this. So many people do these reaction videos but you can tell they are rehearsed, I felt you feeling this! And yes, the live version seeps into your body through your heart. He cant be replaced. Another drug casualty.
Thanks a ton for checking out and bringing light to an absolute legend. A fun fact for you, Layne's mother described his voice as "razor blades wrapped in velvet," and I dont think that could be anymore prevalent than in this performance. Nice work man!
Hey man! I’ve seen many reactions to this performance and you got it right. You are clearly a fan of the band, you use good sound quality in your video, and the energy in your reactions reminds me of how I felt when I first heard it. Thank you!
“it’s just a shame ...” yeah man, i say the same thing every time i watch layne live. a tragedy this man isn’t around burning our faces off with that voice.
You should also check out their live version at the Moore: Alice In Chains - Bleed The Freak Live 1990 in Seattle Alice In Chains - Sea Of Sorrow (Live In Seattle '90) Alice In Chains - Man In The Box (Live at Moore Theatre) (1990)
This live version in particular is THE way to experience this song. You did more than right. This is easily in in my top 3 best live performances of all time.
Watching you react too AIC is like watching a child on Christmas morning opening presents and finally opening the one thing they had wanted more than anything ever. Thank you. God bless you and yours.
Rock pretty much died at the end of the 90s. There has not been anything original or significant since . The Seattle grunge explosion was the last creative burst for rock.We have suffered computerized bubblegum pop music with auto tune , lip syncing and lyrics that sound like they were written by a third grader for the past 20 years. No soul, no groove,no musical skill, no heavy stage presence, no prolific song writers. Its pathetic. Joe Bonamassa and Chris Stapleton are about the only real music out there today.
Thanks for posting one of the most genuine and intelligently filmed reaction videos ever posted. Your reaction is 110% real and anyone seeing it can tell the respect and affection you have for Layne. You truly are a fan of the band and I cannot wait to see your reaction to more Alice in Chains videos. You should truly react to Shame in You. Its very powerful, dark and gives a rarely seen insight to Layne's last days.
Preston, since u love Layne so much plz chk out Mad Season (Laynes other band he fronted). River of Deceit, Wake Up, Long Gone Day are all phenomenal songs!!!!!!!!!!!!
King... You just seriously warmed my heart with your reaction. It's evident in your face; you feel every little bit of it. I'm glad you make these videos. This is my favorite song, and the way you reacted is exactly how I feel. Props for being a true music lover... You feel that. Rock on, man. ❤️
I’ve been watching a lot of these reaction videos lately, and I have to say that yours is the best. You don’t over do it and you keep it real. When you can check out “Bleed the Freak” , it’s from the same concert.
Best vocalist of the 90's. Nobody else is even close
Possibly Cornell, right behind him.
Its layne and cornell...both they're were the best....and after yu have cobain vedder..and wood ..scott weiland...and others....layne was other level with cornell.....r.i.p all of them..
Eddie Vedder?
Most definitely agree. Layne will be my fav of ALL time.
My opinion it goes like so
Layne
Cornell
Vedder
Cobain
In terms of vocal capabilities
This is how I like to remember him. Looking young and healthy and sounding phenomenal
He always sounded phenomenal, but in his later life, he was less phenomenal.
SpikE Spiegel Yeah I’m sure you were fuckin backstage with him before the show.. You don’t know shit so please stfu dude.
James Houghtaling tell that fucking idiot again
Layne Staley deserved the same amount of attention as Kurt Cobain.
Edit: thanx guy I didn’t think I’d get this many likes.
Dennis Allen Even more..
Amen
He didn't want attention, he wanted more and more heroin.
Kurt was junk. Just a passing trend that was over exploited to the masses.
Way way more.
“I wish I could see him live”.

Enrique Salazar y th gy.
Saw them in 92 opening for Van Halen in the Tacoma Dome. They were better than Van Halen.

You're gonna love the concert. You won't even hear Duvall sing the crowd will sing Layne's parts. It's magical.

Purist form. Loaded on alcohol cocaine and heroin?
Very pure?
I get chills when I hear this live version. Rest in peace Layne.

Absolutely amazing, and emotional version of this song. Layne is incredible in it.

Layne in his prime. Unbeatable. AIC, my favorite band of the ‘90s. The best of the Seattle movement and that says a lot.

Agreed, this version is better than the studio. I think almost all the songs at this concert are way better than the album version.
Undertow - Pain Of Salvation ;)

hearing how you talk about layne makes me tear up. knowing i’ll never be able to see him perform live, hurts so much
The most real, like totally genuine music reaction on the net, not just youtube.
I come back to this reaction every year. So real and pure genuine
So very happy you reacted to this! I requested this live version so many times! I knew you'd appreciate it bruh! SO AWESOME!!!🤘🏻🎶 RIP LAYNE.⚘
"A true master at his craft"
So true and well said.
He was one of the best and yet underrated his entire career.
He was so good it did him in.
He was able to reflect on all the darkness to sing music that perhaps has no emotional rival save a few other big named bands.
Thank you.
You might like Pantera (Cemetery Gates), and Jinjer (Pisces), if you don't already.
Man did I get a kick out of this reaction!!! "Hold on, HOLY SHIT" !!! You know bro, he meant it, so did you ! Love it!
Love Jerry's performance as much as Layne's. Dude plays his heart out.
Mad season live at the moore man. More layne at his best
unfortunately the videos not on youtube anymore
I was just about to suggest Mad Season and obviously someone always beats me to it lol I will just concur the sentiment....and go further to suggest "Wake Up" off of that Mad Season album. Almost like Layne's cry for help...makes my eyes tear up everytime I hear it.
thank you for doing this reaction. you can really feel layne's emotion through his powerful vocal performance. love the video bro
Also Congrats on 200k Subs, you earned it!
This brought tears to my eyes. AIC is one of my all time favorites! Thank you for reacting to this song and video! Keep up the good work! You rock! Peace to you! ✌🏻
WOW no quality drop from the studio version, and with this song too? WOw........
Alot of people consider Chris Cornell the gold standard with voice when it comes to "grunge" and Im a fan no doubt, but Layne got him beat IMO.
soakedbearrd chris was good on cd. But not live. Layne can do both and is out of this world great. No comparing those two. Layne for the win.
Only reason I put Chris above Layne is because of the vast amount of incredible songs he did. Otherwise, they're even on emotional power delivery
@@nickjohnson5202 I hear you but I think Layne did overall better songs. My first ever rock cassette I ever bought was Soundgarden's supernatural so Im a fan, but I think overall songs Layne and AIC beats Soundgarden and Audioslave.
@@soakedbearrd ...I like AIC more than Soundgarden, but after Dirt, Layne's addiction took control. He was never the same. Both are severely missed
soakedbearrd It’s superunknown so obviously you weren’t
I just appreciate your passion for music so very much Preston!❤️
Thanks a ton for checking out and bringing light to an absolute legend. A fun fact for you, Layne's mother described his voice as "razor blades wrapped in velvet," and I dont think that could be anymore prevalent than in this performance. Nice work man!
Man in the Box. AIC
I was LITERALLY ABOUT TO TYPE THIS
yes the live one ABC IN CONCERT 91 is one of there best live performances.
@@soulsinkpen3964 You should. The more comments, the more likely he is to see it
Jey-ey-esus Chriiiist, that'd be nice!
C'mon guys, we're well past that. The best AIC songs are usually not on the radio
Hey man! I’ve seen many reactions to this performance and you got it right. You are clearly a fan of the band, you use good sound quality in your video, and the energy in your reactions reminds me of how I felt when I first heard it. Thank you!
Alice in Chains sea of sorrow. It's from the same concert that you just watched.
“it’s just a shame ...” yeah man, i say the same thing every time i watch layne live. a tragedy this man isn’t around burning our faces off with that voice.
You should also check out their live version at the Moore:
Alice In Chains - Bleed The Freak Live 1990 in Seattle
Alice In Chains - Sea Of Sorrow (Live In Seattle '90)
Alice In Chains - Man In The Box (Live at Moore Theatre) (1990)
Tobias I second all of these
I third all of these
asia27 fuck yea love that song
This live version in particular is THE way to experience this song. You did more than right. This is easily in in my top 3 best live performances of all time.
rain when i die
Watching you react too AIC is like watching a child on Christmas morning opening presents and finally opening the one thing they had wanted more than anything ever. Thank you. God bless you and yours.
Can anyone remember how great the 90s actually were?!! I miss it so bad! Turning 41 this year and God I feel so old!
That right there folks is why Layne is one of the best singers of all time..
AIC- Rain When I Die and Check My Brain
Metallica- Fight Fire With Fire, Creeping Death, Hit The Lights
Thing that should not be
Travis Biles YES
Disposable Heroes
Thanks for posting one of the most genuine and intelligently filmed reaction videos ever posted. Your reaction is 110% real and anyone seeing it can tell the respect and affection you have for Layne. You truly are a fan of the band and I cannot wait to see your reaction to more Alice in Chains videos. You should truly react to Shame in You. Its very powerful, dark and gives a rarely seen insight to Layne's last days.
Preston you are becoming the Layne of reaction channels. Keep it up brother.
I love your reaction! Thanks for not interrupting too many times during the song. It is such a loss, I never saw him live, and so wish I'd had.
Hell Yes!! Preston, thank you for this reaction! It was about time. And anything Alice in Chains live is good, one of the only exceptions
I dig the live versions of songs. That's how you can truly gauge the talent of an artist.
Preston, since u love Layne so much plz chk out Mad Season (Laynes other band he fronted). River of Deceit, Wake Up, Long Gone Day are all phenomenal songs!!!!!!!!!!!!
Long gone day is magic
Trinity Willow good call. Mad Season is amazing and for some reason go relatively unnoticed .
20 + years and wake up still gives me chicken skin
King... You just seriously warmed my heart with your reaction. It's evident in your face; you feel every little bit of it. I'm glad you make these videos. This is my favorite song, and the way you reacted is exactly how I feel. Props for being a true music lover... You feel that. Rock on, man. ❤️
ANGRY CHAIR.
I’ve been watching a lot of these reaction videos lately, and I have to say that yours is the best. You don’t over do it and you keep it real. When you can check out “Bleed the Freak” , it’s from the same concert.
Great reaction man..you gotta check out “Wake up” by mad season..Layne Staley as the lead singer..Amazing song
Yesssss!!! I just commented the same...evokes so much emotion everytime I hear it
I swear i just keep coming back to this lol. The appreciation you have for this AMAZING man is the best!
